Obama says he doesn't want to be too late to see ailing relative again

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 23, 2008 07:00 AM

After a rally in Indianapolis today, Barack Obama leaves the campaign trail until Saturday to spend time with his ailing grandmother in Hawaii.

Madelyn Payne Dunham, 85, who helped raise Obama while his mother traveled the world, is said to be gravely ill after falling and breaking her hip. Her brother, Charles Payne, told the Associated Press that she was hospitalized briefly, but is back home in her Honolulu apartment, where Obama's sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, cares for her.

In an interview airing this morning on the "Early Show" on CBS, Obama talked about why it's so important to see Dunham, less than two weeks before Election Day.

"My grandmother's the last one left," Obama said, "She has really been the rock of the family, the foundation of the family."

Obama also mentioned that he didn't see his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, just before she died of ovarian cancer at age 53 in 1995.

"Yeah, got there too late," he said. "You know, I mean, it was sort of like this, in the sense that she had a terminal illness. We knew she wasn't doing well, but you know, the diagnosis was such that we thought we had a little more time and we didn't. And so I want to make sure that I don't make the same mistake twice."

What a JOKE!
As terrible as this sounds, it is clearly a campaign stunt!
If she is gravely ill, and you don't want to be late, then he would have packed up on Monday when they announced this and just gone.
Here he waits til Thursday and then has the Audacity to say that he doesn't want to be too late!

Give me a break...how many press conferences will he have in Hawaii?
He will certainly look like an ass if she dies before he gets there!

He's dancing on Ellen while his granny is on her death bed? Why wait so long to visit her? She's been very ill for weeks. Doesn't jive.

Obama should be trying to hold his campaign together
not taking 5 days off? who is this guy anyway. Been
reading all your blogs, bet this does not make it
you only put mccain in an unfavorable light. people
are turning on the news media, because there
is no fair reporting. Hope all the media goes down the
tubes and there is an uprising against you and a new
format of news takes over.

YEah, that's why he has waited 3 days since hearing she was "critically ill" before going to her side. And why isn't Michelle going? Or the grandkids? Something is not right about this. God bless Mrs. Dunham.

Haha, Carol, seriously, "hold his campaign together"? Obama is beating donors away with a stick, he's up by double-digits in some of his battleground states, and he's got prominent and lifelong Republicans joining his camp. At this point he could drink fetal blood out of a chalice in a mosque, and McCain/Palin would still probably blow it.

McCain takes time off from his campaign to try to help fix the economy and that's proof he "can't do 2 things at once". Yet Obama takes time off to visit his Grandmother and is a "hero". PLEASE all you liberals out there make up your mind. (I, myself, respect BOTH men for doing what's right!)

I respect Obama a great deal for showing strong family values by making plans to squeeze in some quality time with his grandmother during this very critical moment of his campaign. It is not advisable to drop everything and just go as someone has suggested. There are so many dependencies and unless it is a true emergency, you cannot just yank yourself out of the campaign even for a day to take care of your personal issues. If Obama did that, we all would criticize him for being irresponsible to his campaign and millions of supporters who are waiting to hear him speak and inspire them to look to the future.

Let's all say a prayer for Obama's grandmother.

There would have been no point of him going to Hawaii on Monday. It makes sense he is taking 2 days and going..he has every right to. You people who think this is a PR stunt are lame. He is running for president of the united states, he cant afford to sit next to his dying grandmother for 5 days..that's usless!!!

I am proud to be voting for Barack Obama.

Sarah Palin is evil .

You people are horrible! He made his plans about 4 or 5 days ago, finding the right time when he could leave; and he kept the committments that he had already made in the interim. I don't see what is wrong with that. I am sure that she is not doing well, but not on her death bed or he would have left sooner. I can' t believe how cynical you all are. If you want to be cynical about something why don't you comment about how a regular (hockey) mom could spend 150k on clothes in one month! 75K on clothes in one trip to one store. I know it was Needless Markup...er, Neiman Marcus...but come on. I won't spend 75k on clothes in my lifetime, let alone one trip to one store.

I think all the negative remarks from readers should reflect on their own life crisis. It doesn't matter whether or not he left last week or today, the point is he's gone to visit with her while he still can. How do any of you know that her request was for him to continue with his campaigning! We've all experienced having a family member ill and saying I'll visit or call tomorrow and found out it was too late. Put the negative politic aside and be human (I pray you're never put in this position).

Posted by JD October 23, 08 11:21 AM

Obama's grandmother is not "critical" but she is very ill. She is at home recouping but everyone knows how potentially life-threatening a broken hip can be to older people. I think Obama wants to spend as much time with her as possible in case she does pass.......anyone close to their grandparent would want to be there with them. BUT...... with that being said, I'm sure his grandmother knows how important it is for him to be on the campaign trail and understands why he can't be there more. She has probably even ENCOURAGED him to continue his campaigning as much as possible.

Some people need to have some sympathy.......geeeeeeeeeeeez!!!!

Edge you are a complete idiot. Have you never had a grandparent or elderly parent. His grandmother broke her hip and is now recovering, but having an elderly person with a broken hip is still life threatening. So he has time to get to her and see her. Make time for her, but does he have to go right away. No, he can wait a few days and then go. This is probably the best time to go over the weekend before the biggest election every. So he can take time now and I am sure his grandmother is telling him not to come because it is that important.
He does not have to drop everything and go, he had time to finish up his committements and then go.

You fools who equaite this with McSame suspending his campain for the economic crisis are just rotten human beings.

The anger and hatred towards Senator Obama is not only appalling, but truly frightening! How can you live with such animosity in your hearts? Please, take one moment to think about what a better world this would be if each of us answered President Lincoln's call just once a day!! We could start a revolution of kindness!!
God Bless Mrs. Dunham--and may she live long enough to see her beloved grandson elected President!

Campaign stunt- plain and simple.
When you hear that a loved one is sick- dying or NOT- you drop everything and GET GONE.
You don't go on Ellen and Harry Smith's Early Show and ANNOUNCE your intentions, and whine about the fact that you were too late to see your Mother before she died.

He is a pathetic fraud.

Posted by Alec October 23, 08 01:27 PM

Of course a dying relative should come first ! However, there is something very fishy here. I've worked in geriatrics for years and while a broken hip can be bad and sometimes start a slow slide to the end, it's not terminal by any means, and certainly not if they've sent her home. His last visit to Hawaii he spent under an hour with his grandmother, the "typical white person". If she is so gravely terminally ill why didn't he just hop on his plane and go to her? If she isn't so gravely terminally ill as to need him there right away why can't he put it off another week until after the election? Something is not right here, something is fishy...It plays as ethier a campaign stunt or something to do with his birth certificate and the law suits swirling around that.l

Do John McCain, Sarah Palin or conservative republicans respect the moral foundations of our country? The U.S. Constitution is abused by conservative republicans at every turn.

U.S. Constitution: Amendment I - Freedom of Religion
Because of conservative republicans, your tax dollars are funding religious groups you may not agree with. To add insult to injury, conservatives appointed judges have ruled that you do not have a right to challenge this expenditure.

Amendment IV - Search and seizure
Under the guise of court action against abortion, Conservative republicans had John Ashcroft subpoena all the medical records of literally thousands of women like you and members of your family. Conservative republicans invade your privacy every day by browsing your email and phone records. Unfortunately for all of us, they don't appear to care about our U.S. constitution, and they certainly don't care about your privacy.

Amendment X - Powers of the States and People
John McCain and conservative republicans have tried consistently to overturn States Laws. They used your hard earned tax dollars to destroy the will of the people of Oregon, and the famous "Death with Dignity" law; they lost, but undoubtedly will try again. Conservative republicans and John McCain do not respect States Rights. If your state votes for something conservatives don't agree with they will use federal powers to overturn it regardless of how you and your fellow voters feel.

Amendment VIII - Cruel and Unusual punishment
Would you rather die, or support a government which supported and sanctioned torture? The founding fathers would rather have died. The founding fathers were proud to fight and die for our government: A government which specifically outlaws cruel and unusual punishment. Conservatives don't agree with this philosophy. Conservatives are at odds with our founding fathers on this score, and too many others to count.

John McCain, Sarah Palin, and the conservative republicans have already gone too far in destroying the moral foundations of our country. I urge you to keep this in mind in the coming election as we rebuild our nation together by voting for Obama, who stated that in his first 100 days he would eliminate all of Bush's unconstitutional signing orders as a start.

I love liberals. The same people who tried to tar and feather Sarah Palin for campaigning for VP instead of being with her pregnant daughter have now turned a blind eye and a deaf ear to the fact that Barack Obama has chosen to do MORE campaigning before seeing his dying grandmother. Not only that, but liberals also fail to mention that Obama has a half-brother who lives in a hut in Kenya on $1 per MONTH. Surely, the second-coming of Jesus Christ could spare $12 per year to double his brother's income, right? The Democratic nominee sure cares about his family...

Posted by Truth Detector October 23, 08 02:44 PM

I love this!! So, if Obama can't juggle two things at once (a personal event and a political campaign) then he's looked at as a hero. What happens if Russia attacks one of their former provinces or Iran launches their already announced attack missles on Israel? Will Obama say, "sorry, I have a PTO meeting to attend for my kids" or "sorry, my grandmother is gravely ill again".???

This is pathetic on top of the LIBS attack on McCain for wanting to focus on the economic crisis in DC instead of making a bunch of stump speeches.

you know the "real" reason he's going to Hawaii? to try to fudge his birth certificate so that it looks like he is a natural-born citizen! and he's not! born in Kenya, mother only age 18...check out the Constitutiojn!!! you'll hear more on this (rush and michael savage at least) but everyone is to afraid of messing things up for the "messiah." he's a criminal, actually. it's illegal to run for president without certain requisites that he does not have, and he will probably try to fudge or lie about his birth certificate! mark my words!

Taylor,

You liberals ought to follow your own advice and be consistent, although I have a sneaking suspicion that this isn't going happen. Basically, if Sarah Palin's pregnant daughter is fair game for you, then don't complain when Obama's half-brother (who lives in a hut on $1 per day) and his grandmother (who is less important to him today than his campaign) are brought up.

If he is so concerned then why isn't he there now!!?? The phoney was in Hawaii in August for vacation and didn't even stop to see her then!! She went from "gravely ill" and he's going there for 5 days to "she is resting comfortable at home" and he'll go for one day (all within a 24 hr period) which is it?? I know what it is, you have to respond to the court order to FINALLY produce your birth certificate to the Hawanian courts. The grandmother story is a cover-up to explain why he'd leave the campaign trail right now........He's a lying phoney, ever single word out of his mouth is a lie!! Keep drinking the Kool aid folks!!

IS Barak going to Hawaii to see his grandmother or to get a better fake birth certificate?
Why wait from Monday to Thursday to see your dying grandmother before she dies? Hello, are we that stupid to believe this big lie?
Is the fake birth certificate circulating on the web without any control numbers filled finally recognized by the general public as a fake? Does he need to pay off someone in Hawaii to produce an official false document?
He should be sent back to Kenya. We don't honor Liars here. Wise up all out there, don't elect a Liar to our highest office!
