Obama tells Florida voters to beware of last-minute attacks
Returning to the state that has been the scene of Democratic heartbreak, Barack Obama warned Florida voters today to not get too complacent about the election.
"I am hopeful about the outcome," he told supporters in Tampa. "We were thrilled yesterday when a great American statesman, General Colin Powell, joined our cause. But we cannot let up. And we won't.
"Because one thing we know is that change never comes without a fight. In the final days of campaigns, the say-anything, do-anything politics too often takes over. We’ve seen it before. And we’re seeing it again today. The ugly phone calls. The misleading mail and TV ads. The careless, outrageous comments. All aimed at keeping us from working together, all aimed at stopping change," said Obama, who plans to campaign in Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday as well.
"It’s getting so bad that even Senator McCain’s running mate denounced his tactics last night," he said, noting that Sarah Palin told reporters that negative automated phone calls turn off voters. "You know, you really have to work hard to violate Governor Palin’s standards on negative campaigning. You really have to work hard."
"But we’re not going to be distracted. We’re not going to be diverted. Not this time. Not this year. Our challenges are just too great for a politics that’s so small," Obama plans to say, before embarking on his new stock stump speech on the economic crisis and his tax cut and housing proposals.
Tucker Bounds, a McCain spokesman, responded: "With days to go, it’s clear that Barack Obama will ‘say and do anything’ to get elected, including intentionally misleading the American people about the type of campaign he’s running. It’s classic Barack Obama: he completely mischaracterized Governor Palin’s statements about her desire to go beyond all the ads and robocalls from both sides of the aisle when it was, in fact, his own running mate who fiercely condemned the tone of the ads in this race -- calling his own campaign's ads 'terrible.' Barack Obama seems to have 150 million different reasons why he’s unwilling to be honest with voters, but in this country candidates have to win the presidency -- they can't buy it.”

I'M SO EXCITED!!! GO OBAMA!!!
I'm early voting and volunteering today, watching "W" with friends tonight, and attending the rally in Miami tomorrow.
The GOP and John McCain are running the dirtiest campaign in history, but with $150 million, Obama will be able to fight the smears and take Florida! This is a great American success story! A US President funded by real Americans - no crooked PACS/lobbyists - FINALLY!!!
President Obama is funded by and will answer to people like me... millions of voters sending small amounts of cash ($100 or less) each month and volunteering to help bring change... This is REAL public financing!
BUT WE NEED EVERY VOTE WE CAN GET!!! VOTE TODAY!!! VOLUNTEER!!! CANVASS!!! MAKE CALLS!!! DRIVE YOUR FRIENDS TO THE POLLS!!! WE WILL ONLY WIN IF WE SHOW UP AND VOTE!!!
OBAMA/BIDEN '08
Stay focused, stay strong, stay honest, and be on a look out for right wing extremists, and go after them!
As an outsider across the border, I'm well taken by the campainging of Senator Obama. Let's hope that the trend of "due for drastic changes " in the U.S.A.,will permeate the rebellious mind of the new generation, which of whom have waited impatiently for U.S. reforms. On the other hand, once the young generation have satisfied their hunger and thirst for truth and fair justice, the whole world will experience stabilization on all fronts.
Obama is the right candidate for this year precisely for the reason Colin Powell chose to support him. The Republicans have not presented an acceptable candidate because John McCain has chosen the politics of personal distruction over the politics of issues and solving peoples problems. Sarah Palin is simply unacceptable. For those of us who recognize the importance of fiscal responsibility we can not chose a candidate who wishes to promote the same economic policy that placed us in the hole we are in.
There have been so many themes to the McCain campaign from experience to Ayers to maverick and socialism what we surely know is McCain is not the right person. Whether Obama is is a question that each must decide for himself. If you use the McCain argument of judge the man by the company he keeps then Powell and Volcker, Kmeic and Buffett is a pretty good crew from my standpoint. Like Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama surrounds himself with a diversity of opinion. Each man will attest that they have been fairly heard by him. So the only thing that will be an unknown is judgement. It has been good in this financial crisis and on Iraq, better than John McCain's but how will it be when he is in office and what I can say for sure it will be better than his opponent or the current office holder. How good it will be we won't know but we never have known before. The talent is there and hopefully the ability to produce will too.

yes, i was only able to send $5 and once $30....I am a retired teacher, white, age 65, who taught the Apaches in Arizona, Mccain's state. he sat on the Indian Affairs Board and let Apche land be taken away t be developed by a copper mining company. he spends big bucks at the casinos...I taught Chitmacha indians in Louisiana, and they get a typical $6,000 a year each from their casinos, but in AZ, fat cats get the money....Mccain gets stacks of free chips at Hondah casino and ignored the Apaches. He wasn;t always that way, but canged. His wife doesn't live in AZ, she has her separate house in California.
After teaching the ignored and desperate Apaches in Arizona, I see them lining up to vote for Obama. please, people, read the plea, below, by the Apaches, before you vote for Sen. Mccain. In contrast, Obama has helped us teachers a long time.
To: President Bush and U.S. Congress
Whereas, the Tribal Coalition of six Arizona tribes has stated that the proposed mining operation of Resolution Copper is within the ancestral lands of the sovereign native nations of the Apache, Yavapai, Hopi, and O’Odham Indian Communities.
Whereas, Apache Leap area has been and continues to be of great cultural, subsistence and spiritual significance to numerous federally recognized native American Tribes throughout the region.
Whereas, the proposed site is on United States and Arizona State Public Lands, including Oak Flat, Apache Leap and Devils Canyon, and should be preserved for tribal ceremony and culture, recreation, habitat and watershed.
Whereas, the proposed land exchange will be turning public land into private domain, which will avoid the environmental impact evaluations and oversight regulations required on public lands.
Whereas, there must be a hydrological study that would assure that the public water supply of Superior, Arizona, the waters of Queen Creek, and the waters of National Forest will not be depleted or polluted by the mining operations.
Whereas, the mining waste is calculated to be equivalent to a 20-story building spread over 2,389 acres of land, which will despoil the scenic landscape.
Whereas, we are in agreement with the following Tribal Coalition letter.
NOW, THEREFORE, we, the undersigned, do hereby
1) Request the President to comply with all requests made in the Tribal Coalition letter of June 20, 2007.
2) Request the President to continue the protection provided to Oak Flat by President Eisenhower in 1955 as an important recreational resource.
3) Request the President to protect Oak Flat, Apache Leap and Devils Canyon from any and all destruction by mining, industry, housing development or any other endeavor that would destroy this region, its beauty, its recreational value, and its traditional Native American heritage.

We don't need Obama to tell us what we've witnessed over the past 8 years. Obama and he DEM congress, a scary prospect. Bad morgtage loans and Fuel price increases are directly responsible for the economic sorrows and loss of jobs. The fault lies with the DEM Congress pushing $140 plus a barrel. And they will still be in office when and if Obama hits the White House. The future is clear to me. US money will flow into oversees accounts like a flood. More jobs will be outsourced to India, etc. And when my husband and I start laying people off from our 2 businesses, we will start with the Obama supporters first. Most business owners I know feel the same and with passion. Reap what you sow.
....WILL ANSWER TO PEOPLE LIKE ME ... whats the matter with you Mla don't you read, or maybe you don't work. Free money, free health care, lets see what else is he giving away...I cant keep up with it he has changed his mind so many time, he will truely change america, betcha you won't like it when he does. He will not answer to anyone but himself.
TO KOCH: I guess you can move to Iraq right? McCain's supporter? Perfect, didn't us taxpayer just spend all our money to support unneccesary WAR? If that's what you want, go ahead, and have fun! Oh by the way, I think cops are on their way, coming to get you. U laid OBAMA supporter's off? Jail time for you! BS bias!
"And when my husband and I start laying people off from our 2 businesses, we will start with the Obama supporters first."
Glad to see that you would base your decisions on political party affiliations and not on employee performance! If that's how you normally make your decisions, it wouldn't surprise me if your business goes under.
#10 "And when my husband and I start laying people off from our 2 businesses, we will start with the Obama supporters first."
Spoken like a bitter old Republican who has sudden anmesia.
Some of the posted comments indicate a choice for a Todd Palin White House, which will be ruled by thuggish secessionists who are coded neo-nazis. This is the future we are facing, and even the intelligent conservatives like Buckley, Wills, and Brooks are finally running scared for our republic. Once we let our demons take over Washington, once the Palin nightmare takes over our country, Bush's 8 years will seem like a Constitutional dream.
#8 : By the way, if McCain got elected, it was all the votes from PEOPLE like you anyway, Obama supporters are well educated, straight to the point, fair, cool... everything, so I guess majority of citizens in United States are that way, just left you and minority of BS people you better start packing your stuff you have 2 choices, you can either move to Alaska and shoot moose or Iraq to get bomb, but you are running out of time you better go before the police come and get ya! Oh and I bet you are another 'Joe the Plumber' that owed taxes without a business, haha loser!
For the sake of America, Mr. McCain should turn to support Mr. Obama right now.
That way enables people to relieve their pains and sufferings of the past eight years.
To be practical and realistic: party policies will be changed for the whole nation under the new leadership of the new team Obama-Biden; everyday life will get better thanks to new medical care and tax relief for every one.
Let's make a change
May God bless Mr. Obama and Mr. Biden and America.
