Palin: Attacks to benefit voters

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 17, 2008 02:52 PM

Sarah Palin put a new spin today on the Republican ticket's daily criticism of Barack Obama:

It's not "meanspirited" or "negative campaigning" to "call someone on their record and associations," it's only being fair to voters.

"We do need to know more clearly about the choice we have on Nov. 4th," Palin told supporters in West Chester, Ohio.

The GOP vice presidential candidate said that the ubiquitous Joe the plumber -- Joe Wurzelbacher of Holland, Ohio -- finally got a "straight answer" from Obama on his tax plans, when the Democrat told him that he wants to "spread the wealth."

Wurzelbacher, she noted, has described that as socialism. "Whatever you call it, I call it bad medicine for an ailing economy," Palin said.

The latest focus of Palin and her running mate John McCain is ACORN, a liberal activist group under investigation in several states and by the FBI for allegedly submitting false voter registration applications. The Republicans have all but suggested that ACORN is trying to steal the election, and have called on Obama to come clean on his ties.

Palin told the Ohio voters that they will not "turn the Buckeye state into the ACORN state."

ACORN is registering voters -- 1.3 million so far -- who are more likely to vote Democratic. And Obama's campaign paid an ACORN affiliate about $800,000 for get-out-the-vote efforts during the Democratic primaries.

But Obama's campaign says there are no ties now.

Responding to Palin, Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor added, "We have not worked with ACORN at all in the general election. Rather than make these false, desperate attacks, the McCain-Palin campaign should release an economic plan that actually helps the middle class instead of giving billions in tax cuts to big corporations."

UPDATE: Robert F. Bauer, the Obama campaign's general counsel, sent a letter today to Attorney General Michael Mukasey, urging him to include in a special prosecutor's investigation of the firing of US attorneys the Republican allegations regarding ACORN.

Bauer said the McCain campaign, the Republican party, and the Bush administration are involved in the "systematic development and dissemination of unsupported, spurious allegations of vote fraud."

Fraud!!! I just can't believe that the globe would even put this in print. Wow. We need clear answers about Ayers, Acorn, and why people who don't pay taxes are going to get tax benefits before we can make a decision on Nov 4. I don't believe Obama on his ties to Ayers.

Palin is the biggest joke for a VP ever.
1. She has ethics violation for abuse of power
2. She consorted with a anti america group and her husband was a member of the group
3. Her religous associations make Rev Write look like a saint
4. Her views on creationism and sex ed teaching are just wrong and dangerous for the country.

The article is full of spin, not what Governor Palin said. The MSM has failed to do their job this election cycle. They are more willing to go after Joe the Plumber than they are to look into confirmed ties to a Radical Unrepentant terrorist, and Michelle's relationship to the Ayer's family. Look them up since I'm sure 90% of the readers here won't believe me. Jeremiah Wright and his "Black Liberation Theology" is next. Look that phrase up and explain how someone could sit in the church for 20+ years and not have heard the much publicized sermons in that church.

"Spreading the wealth" may be akin to socialism, but income tax in the United States has ALWAYS been progressive, meaning the higher income folks pay a higher percentage in tax. There's nothing new here. The whole "raise-your-taxes" bogeyman persona that republicans assign to democratic candidates is a bit of a red herring and mischaracterizes things. (a) The rich have always been taxed more than the poor. (b) We need taxes to pay for many things, including the military, roads and infrastructure, and Medicare. Nobody likes paying taxes, but most people also enjoy the fruits of the taxes to some extent or another. There will always be disagreement about how to best allocate that tax income: how much do we spend on education? how much on the military? how much on social services? But to talk like taxes are some unnecessarily evil is naive and inaccurate. It's stupid politics, and unfortunately, most Americans fall for it. The real discussions should be how to spend the tax revenues and how to cut costs in government.

Maybe someone should ask if Obama is even a citizen. Forget everything else as it is just racist. (Not really). This guy will not release his birth certificate to prove he is even a citizen. How can he be this far along in any campaign, let alone be a senator when he refuses to prove his citizenship. As all of you know, you can't be president if you aren't a citizen. This guy is the Manchurion candidate.

Hey, Dave? Didn't you clean the wax out of your ears before listening to the debate? Obama explained very clearly his "association" with Ayres in answer to Bob Schieffer's question. Remember, Ayres and Obama were on a panel commissioned by Walter Annenberg, a friend of Ronald Reagan and ambassador to Great Britain. And Acorn paid it's people to recruit voters($7.-8.00/hr) and some of their employees did indeed slack off and write names like Mickey Mouse. Now, do you honestly believe that someone is going to show up at some polling place telling them he's Mickey Mouse and he's there to vote?

Palin is beyond stupid if she really believes all she says. The reason they are losing is because McCain ran a poor campaign...in addition to his totally dumb selection of Sweet Sarah!

This woman is a fear-mongerer.

1. ACORN is not a liberal/leftist organization. Ask McCain

2. What do they have to do with the actual VOTE? Nothing. You cannot vote without an ID, PERIOD! This is a clear sign what the GOP intends to do when Obama wins. Country First right?

3. If she says this is for the voters, how would she feel about repeated attacks against her HUSBAND who was a known member of a separatist party IN THIS CENTURY...IN THIS DEACDE! Thats not fair game? Bulls****.

4. What about that ethics report Mrs Palin? Maybe the Dem's should create a flyer about it and mail it out just to make sure all the voters are informed.

They have no policy to run on, so this is all they have. Obama has just as much ammo, yet doesn't use it because he's busy talking policy. You don't have to agree with his ideas or think they're good. But you have to admit that he's the only one with ideas in this race

Though, reading GOP comments on the Globe the past couple of months, I know that will never happen. Mccain supporters have a hatred for Obama...funny considering they don't even know the guy.

If everyone is so concerned about Mr. Ayers, perhaps the University of Illinois at Chicago should explain why he is a professor of Education at their state funded school. It is not a left wing university with ties to terrorists, but an institution of higher learning, whose graduates have had successful careers in many areas. Are Mr. Ayers' students and by association the people that they associate with candidates for scrutiny by the extremists who are yelling about Socialism being part of Senator Obama's plans for the U.S? I'm starting to see KGB all over these "it's only fair to the voters to know" witch hunts.

For the two millionth time - ACORN turned in the majority of the bogus registrations themselves. The registrations are the result of a few paid workers not doing the work to sign up voters, just to get paid. NOBODY expects Mickey Mouse or l;ijfoiyo to actually vote. It is a non-issue. Much more of an issue is voter suppression practiced by the Republicans, and their partnership with Diebold and their "no paper trail", "easy to manipulate" voting machines.

"Spreading the Wealth", Chris, may be the biggest faux pas Obama has made during this campaign. My 13 year old daughter was listening to a debate between me and a friend from the Peoples Republic of Massachussetts and asked me what Socialism meant. I gave the best analogy I've heard. She understood completely, but I'm sure the libby libs won't. She is a straight A student, so I asked her... "Is there someone in your class who goofs off, doesn't do his homework or even put in an effort and gets D's or F's?" "Sure," she said. So I told her if Obama was her teacher he would, all in the name of "fairness", take her A away and give her a C, so he could then give her slacker classmate a C. That way they'd all have the same grade and everyone would be happy. "That's just stupid," she said. "I worked hard for my A, why should he benefit from MY hard work?" I said, "there you go, that's Socialism. That's Obama's plan"

I fully agree with Sarah Palin that revealing a political opponent's affiliations is not "meansprited" or "negative". However, once those associations have been explained to everyone's satisfaction (which has been done), that should be the end of it. Gov. Palin won't let go of a dead issue because she has no connection with reality and this ticket has no other platform that is acceptable to the American people. She is merely soaking up all the attention she can get. The governor seems to enjoy inciting and playing on people's anger. She has been compared to a bulldog but she is more like a dangerous pit bull that needs to be put down.

Posted by RJ October 17, 08 01:14 PM

--Palin's connection to a secessionist group should be questioned, since they asked Iran for sponsorship money.

--McCain was the one held by communists for years in a cell. He's as likely to be a "Manchurian Candidate" as anyone, or did you not actually see the movie?

--Ayers (despite the serious crimes he committed as a much younger man) has devoted his life to improving education.

--ACORN is mostly guilty of hiring scum, not of any conspiracy to "unravel the fabric of democracy"

These GOP-supporters are even more gullible than Obama's fans.
Donkeys, elephants, whatever...supporting a two-party system is the equivalent of idol worship, and we're a nation of idolators. Enjoy.

We NEED Sarah Palin to field questions from real reporters.

We DO NOT need more of this "coverage" of Sarah Palin.

Obama's birth certificate is available - check factcheck.org. Give me a break! Bill Ayers was named Chicago's Citizen of the Year in 1997. He has been a professor at U of I for years and a respected activist in the field of education reform. Maybe his life would have been different if the case against him hadn't been dismissed due to misconduct on the part of the prosecution. Check out Eric Zorn on chicagotribune.com. Zorn has posted a column the late great Mike Royko wrote about Ayers in 1990. Royko thought Ayers was a jerk.

ACORN bundled every voter registration card they believed to be fraudulent and sent those in separately from those that they believed were legitimate. This amounted to thousands across many states. ACORN is required by LAW to submit all registration cards--even obviously fake ones and duplicates. ACORN isn't authorized to throw out a voter card because it says Mickey Mouse. They still have to submit it--by law. It only amounts to fraud if Mickey Mouse shows up with a license and tries to vote. Multiple registrations are spotte in the database. You still can't vote more than once. Do your research before accusing ACORN-and Blacks of trying to win for Obama.

Save me the rationalizations for the cheap shots and negative campaigning. I have George Bush, but at least he has the courage to look someone in the eye and call them names. Palin and McCain want to have their cake and eat it too - they want to act like scoundrels but still pretend they are running an "honorable" campaign. There's nothing honorable about those two half wits.

Fortunately, after 8 years of cynicism, negativity and divisiveness, the American people have had enough. Go back to playing shuffleboard gramps - and Sarah, you're a poor man's (and a dumb man's) Tina Fey. Go back to broadcasting.

Krystyn, didn't you hear? Sarah Palin said she was cleared of ... "any hint of any kind of unethical activity", so in her mind the ethics report is a moot point or perhaps even works to her favor. However, she also believes that New Hampshire is in the "Great North West" and that Afghanistan is our neighbor. I competely agree with the Washington Post's endorcement of Barack Obama which was heavily influenced by the "disappointing campaign" of Republican candidate John McCain and his decision to pick Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate for the November!

Posted by Karen October 17, 08 01:28 PM

After a brief honeymoon with the media and public, Palin has shown time and again that she lacks the knowledge or experience to be the 2nd in command of this nation. When she took a brief hiatus at McCain's ranch in Arizona to "brush up on issues such as foreign policy", that was the first indication that she was not qualified. When you aspire to be 2nd in command of this nation, you MUST be ready. You cannot cram for the position. So all she has left are incindiary remarks and nothing of substance. The Republicans made a huge mistake in her selection.

I was reading in the Anchorage Daily News how Palin is going to have a lot of fence-mending to do once she returns to Alaska. the wealthy want to pay more, paying more and boasting about it. They compete to pay more. Some pay $225,000 for house and "others" pay $22,500,000.00 those paying the latter will most certainly tell all, and want the publicity. New automobiles can cost $15,000.00 but for that 5% it has to be $150,000.00 and buy 2 of them in different colors. Okay wine is $8.00 - $12.00 a bottle and than that 5% wine is $600.00. These people are first class, it is how they fly, go the sports, golf, theatre, opera, vacations and hotels. The solution is to call their share of taxes...those 5%...first class taxes!! Make them exclusive platinum taxpayers,

How many interviews has the queen of g.o.p. rallies done? Why does she continue to avoid questions about the Alaska Independence Party or Pastor Multhee? How long will she ignite crowds into a rage calling Obama an outsider and someone to be feared?

ACORN has messed up but not everyone they signed to work for them used poor registration methods. They have admitted that a couple staffers were clueless and the people they registered have all been flagged. The GOP is attacking in hopes of having everyone of their registrants stricken from voter rolls. Does Florida ring a bell?

Why is the BG presenting partisan talking points without any type of critical analysis? This piece reads like a neocon ad.
Because a politician says something, it does not automatically make it truthful.
I believe journalists have a greater responsibility than just repeating campaign slogans.
How about asking the candidates questions concerning REAL issues affecting us on a daily basis: you know issues such as the economic meltdown, global warming, health care, the price of gas at the pump, etc. An added bonus for the electorate would be to then critically analyze the answers.

John G. I hope your straight A daughter seeks out more valid definitions of "Socialism" than your petty example.

Have you read anyone of authority on the subjects of economics and government? Do you live a bubble? Do you read the comments here? Because it's been said by people over and over again. In fact it was said above. Our country already has a progressive tax system in place. The wealthy do pay more into the system than someone who earns a lower wage. Is it really your belief, based on your example to your daughter, that Sentaor Obama plans to entirely change our tax code so that all our earnings are put into a big government "pot" and "redistributed" (The GOP lobes to beat that phrase home doesn't it?) so that we all get the same? Like Marx?

Do you just listen to what Joe Six Pack says over the water cooler, or Gerry Callahan on WEEI? Or do you just think you're clever?
Socialism:
noun
1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.

Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating social or collective ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and the creation of an egalitarian society.[1][2] Modern socialism originated in the late nineteenth-century working class political movement. Karl Marx posited that socialism would be achieved via class struggle and a proletarian revolution which represents the transitional stage between capitalism and communism.

Our economy has already been a mix of capitalism and socialism since the 20's. Farm subsidies, (or are you anti-farmer?) Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, the FDA, (and any other regulatory body) can be considered a socialist program.

Grow up.

The level of hatred that has been encouraged by Palin, McCain and the narcissistic talk show hosts has become downright dangerous. I was a young voter when JFK, RFK and MLK were assasinated. It isn't that hard to convince a person to kill another person "for the good of the country." I was in the military; we were taught to kill. When I read some of the comments on this blog from people who absolutely hate Obama, believing the garbage spewed by self-serving radio hosts and right-wing bloggers who know better, it worries me. It's even beginning to worry McCain. He wasn't such a bad guy a few years ago. It's a shame what's happened to him.

RE: Acorn - It's a total GOP fraud and distraction. Check out David Iglesias, the US Attorney for New Mexico who was purged by Rove et al, because he refused to pursue these bogus "voter fraud" cases: "I'm astounded that this issue is being trotted out again. Based on what I saw in 2004 and 2006, it's a scare tactic."
Brad Friedman's shorter take on the Acorn issue:
"The only actual crime here is that Acorn managed to register some 1.3m low-income (read: Democratic-leaning) voters over the past two years. The rest is, pretty much, just made up."

People like you who blindly hate, without researching at all, drag down the integrity of the election process. Please have some clue of what you are talking about before you throw around accusations like that---you sound exactly like Palin--and especially before you vote. Merely repeating false accusations will not get you, or our country, anywhere. The Obama spokesman is right. If Palin could do anything besides recite lies and attack Obama, she would be talking about the economy, and only the economy. But he has completely lost my respect. In fact I must have been mistaken all along to think that he had any honor. If he becomes president I will still have no respect for him. But even worse if he becomes president it will show the world that the days of an inspiring America are over. If he becomes president the world will see that America is ruled by hate, fear and bigotry and that every other country had better be afraid because a hate filled, angry old man and his ill-informed religious fundamentalist vp will be in charge and they are erratic and filled with negativity. In fact negativity is their platform.

It is interesting to see how so many people can be influenced by a story that is actually insignificant. People want to be outraged and the press can make mountains out of molehills to stoke that desire for outrage. The real issue here is that 200,000 voters might be disenfranchised because there are a few illegitimate registrations that will not even result in illegitimate votes. So the real outrage is, as in so many elections in the past, the Republicans are preying on the fears and prejudices of the uninformed and trying to take the right to vote away from those who might vote Democratic. That is the travesty. That is what is outrageous.

ok look at the strategy of Obama.....

Obama talks about the Issues in detail
Biden keeps saying "mccain = Bush or 4 more years etc" and promotes obama
Thats the plan

McCain talks a little about the issues but tries to raise doubts about obama
Palin just straight up attacks attacks attacks.......

see the difference???

Oh and about Joe the plumber.....he will only be taxed on pretaxed total income....Remember, when you have a small business you can write off many things like employees pay, healthcare, insurance, vehicles, tools etc.....that will NOT be taxed under Obama.....Obama is taxing over $250,000 NET income after all the perks and writeoffs that small businesses get......do your homework

Obama did not release a birth certifiacte. He released an image of a certificate of live birth-- not the same thing. And even if it was a birth certificate, when is a jpeg image on a website an official document? You need an official copy of your birth certificate even to sign up for little league. There was a lawsuit brought against McCain in Texas to prove his citizenship, and McCain produced the documents to settle the case. There is now a lawsuit in the federal courts to have Obama prove his citizenship with an official birth certificate. Instead of producing the documents, the DNC has filed a motion to dismiss. So those are the facts. He may indeed be a natural born citizen, but it has not been officially proven to the public.

John G. (#19) I've heard that analogy so many times in the last 2 days it's ridiculous. Not your daughter, not your analogy and not an original idea from your pretty little head.

How can Palin, who herself has yet to come clean about anything, or tell enough of her true background, in a way that makes sense, talk about "needing to know more clearly" about the candidates? How can she even claim to be a 'maverick' when she can't say anything outside of what she's been groomed to say? She is no pitbull, she's a parrot. The easiest way to get her to talk is to go up to her and ask, "Palin want a cracker??"

And yes, the article is accurate, CMB. I was sitting in front of the TV while CNN had the rally showing (not by my choice), and it IS exactly what she said. Typical Republican whiner about 'liberal' media coverage.

Americans are sick of hearing the bogus claims the McCain-Palin ticket and the ultra-right Republicans want to repeat ad nauseum. The failure of McCain to win this election partially rests on the ones spewing nonsensical rhetoric-- the ones who repeat the requests for Obama to show his birth certificate, the ones who repeat that he's Muslim, the ones that repeat he's bought off ACORN, the ones who say he is a Socialist, the ones who say he will make study of the Koran mandatory, the ones who claim America is a Christian country, etc. It is a fact that no one wants to hear a nag-- and pure and simple, that's all you folks are doing. You parrot the ignorant statements and repeat ad nauseum. That's the thing that turns people off the most, especially when there is no evidence to support your nagging. Even when facts are presented to counteract your claims, you all just continue to nag. So your party won't win. Big deal. The country will go on, with or without you. Stop nagging.

I think Palin has a perpetual PMS.

We have to tolerate for few more weeks then we can send them packing to the Red neck frontiers.
All these whites are clinging to the old myth of their supremacy
It is time to let a Black man and part Muslim to step in
We had too much of Jewish influence, greed and white fat cat republicans

Sarah is perhaps at her most amusing when she tries to sound like she has a clue. Look, Sarah initially served a purpose, that is, as a fun, offbeat *wink* distraction from the serious business of electing our leaders. Sarah's old lines and oddball humor have become stale, so what's left? Sarah's new job is a variation of her old one...to the best of her ability, Sarah's new job is to distract voters. Who knows how offbeat Sarah's comments will become as she and the campaign fall further and further behind. Sarah...please include more of that thar goofball jargon...thar's still some entertainment value to that. You betch! *wink*

I'm sorry, but there are some readers here who are not getting it. "Share The Wealth" only terrifies the greedy and selfish. I am appalled that there are so many knee-jerk respondants who do not understand in the slightest what Obama is saying. If you knew that one half of the Fortune 500 companies did not pay income taxes last year (so that you have to take up the shortfall in revenues) would not agree with Obama and Biden that they should? The rich have seen their wealth go up 123% over the past decade while we have had a net loss down here. They didn't earn it with hard work. They gamed the system with loopholes. Enough already. Come on.

John G:

Your comment that Obama would give the D student a high grade and take away your daughter's A seems so ironic. You confuse apples and oranges.

Your beloved George Bush was the slacker who goofed off in his class, McCain was at the very bottom of his--both were saved by privilege from big daddy. Palin four schools in five years to get a journalism degree from nowhere.

Obama finished near the top of his class at Chicago University, was the chief editor of the Harvard Law Review, all on his own.

Why are Republicans always crying about someone else coasting and getting something for free, when it's their own heroes who have the privilege to be less than mediocre and get all the goodies.

Can never get enough handouts for the rich and privileged. Never enough corporate welfare or fat contracts for the military complex. God forbid, though, that a kid gets something other than Ronnie Reagan's ketchup for lunch--that would be socialism b'god.

This is simply a fight between two classes of people.
The intelligent and the stupid.
You think McPain wants you to know Obama better.
The truth is McPain knows you better and plays on your every fear and emotion. He know s you too well. Even if you know it , you have already taken your stand and don't want to admit it. It's all a big drama and you are playing a big part in his success of making fools of you.
You are actually being used. Wake up "My Friends"

Palin's credibility is limited to a sliver of American women and men who want to believe her cheery charisma and folksy demeanor. The facts in troopergate, the abuse was unethical, not unlegal and Ms. Righteous denied both, getting a "Pants on Fire" rating on the PolitiFact check. So yes indeed, voters need to know. Those who want to know. For she distorts in ways that are so colossal with so little show of conscience that she discredits herself, not just for now, but probably for her entire career. But since she doesn't care about that, she won't suffer from it. No problem.

#19, John, that is the dumbest analogy I've heard. Does you daughter go to public school? Then, you're welcome, from this taxpayer.

Sarah Palin and John McCain are depending on a voting block of people who are easily misinformed, fearful, impervious to facts, and very angry. YouTube is full of them these days, finally brought to light for who and what they really are. It worked in 2000 and 2004; I dearly hope it will not work again. Go VOTE.

Welcome to the TANK!!!!!!! Liberals, jump in!
Barry Obama can not be president if he was not born in the US. This should be a simple issue to resolve, provide proof, show your birth certificate. Barry has a different strategy, he is suing to stop the requirement of burden of proof. Just trust Barry, he'd beyond reproach.
