Palin on SNL: Shooting the moose

Posted by Jason Tuohey October 19, 2008 12:31 PM

By David Beard, Boston.com editor

Sarah Palin made her trip to NBC's Saturday Night Live, and Bullwinkle should have stayed home.

While Palin took a chair on the formerly Tina Fey-occupied Weekend Update, she declined to do the "Sarah Palin Rap,'' a move that prompted Burlington's Amy Poehler to rock the house instead.

Here's the video, in which the Poehler Palin sang "All the mavericks in da house, put your hands up!'' -- and Palin and "Update'' partner Seth Meyers complied, grooving in unison.

Backed by two ''Eskimos'' and a faux First Dude, Pohler/Palin gave the obligatory call-and-response -- "When you say Obama/I say Ayers'' (the real Palin said ''Ayers'' grinningly with the crowd) -- it was time for the moose to appear. Briefly.

Shambling onto the stage, this Bullwinkle lookalike, a representation of Palin's ''support'' for animals, had a moment in the forefront before Pohler thrust her finger in its direction and stage gunshots broke out. The ''moose'' dropped to the ground, and Pohler, moving next to the real Palin, tossed in a few more stage shots for good measure.

"Goodnight,'' Palin added at the end of the sketch, ''and have a pleasant tomorrow.''

Here's the opening Palin/Tina Fey skit as well, not quite as funny:

Readers, did you catch the performance? What did you think? Let us know in our comments section.

She rocked the house! Drill baby drill!

Why are we so lenient to Palin’s efforts? People said that she was ok when she debated Biden, but the truth is that she was horrible. If that performance was done by a man, he would’ve been heavily criticized. The same happen on SNL.
She did not do anything, she just stayed there and kind of danced, and said a few lines. Wow, what an accomplishment.
This is just an example of how desperate are the Republican strategists to get votes.

Before anyone starts complaining about the shooting of the moose in the skit as political we need to look at what SNL could have done to make it political. Shooting a moose is legal in hunting season and is something Palin has done in the past. To use a different animal would have been political- like say a polar bear which Palin has tried to keep off the endangered list. It is funny that most of the hard hitting political questions have come only from the late night comedians. Letterman has been the only one to ask McCain about Liddy in response to Ayers.

I only saw the opening sketch. I'm not a fan of Palin, but I thought she was a good sport. I wonder how she felt about what they did, though. It was not flattering. Hope I can find a copy of the Weekend Update Palin rap on video somewhere.

The opening skit was okay. The later (rapping) skit was hilarious. My husband and I both laughed uproariously. For a first-time SNL guest, I thought Palin did a great job.

She's not prepared to be vice-president of the USA, but she's still a neat person and I admire that she went onto the show.

Palin knew they were going to slam her, she wanted to show us that she is not afraid of them. I appreciate that but I would never have done it. Nor would I have done the interview with Katie 'off the record, just between you and me Mrs Bush' Curic. Palin was trying to say " look the American people have bigger problems than you mocking me in an inane skit'
I really like her. Do I wish McCain chose someone else, perhaps, but, I am pro life so I do have to vote my morals. The media has been deplorable to her and her family. The media has vetted Joe the Plumber more than Obama, which is bs

Took guts for Sarah to face all those Dems in the house! Great lady - I admire her and her family so much. The media has been horrible to her. For the first time in my adult life, I am ashamed of our free press.

Former Republican here, turned Democrat after witnessing the damage that the republicans have made on this great country over the Bush years.

I agree with many of the comments. It was clear that SNL was mocking her on national TV. It was also a another failed desperate publicity stunt by the McCain campaign to get people to like them...McCain's despereate strategy over the next two weeks is 1) Get people to like them by appearing on tv (SNL, Letterman, etc.)and 2) run the most deceptive, negative, and false campaign to scare people from voting for Obama.

I hope the American people are smarter than this, and vote to take our country back in 08...enough is enough.

Now if she could just get over her fear of giving a serious interview.

The Republicans would have us believe that a comedy sketch can replace serious interviews by the media.

I'd rather see her on "Meet the Press" than SNL... but that's just IMHO.

Weak. No real laughs from Palin. Poehler and Fey were hilarious though.

I agree with David--would be great to see Sarah Palin on Meet the Press or my fave, George Stephanoupolis--but then she'd have to really DO something. SNL was the lesser of the evils. Nonetheless, Amy Pohler was Home Run Out of the Park GOLD. When the moose comes out--I still howl.

Will the REAL GOV. Palin please stand up? Give me a break Tina plays Gov. Palin better than the real one!!! I watched this for silly joke purposes only. I can't stand Palin and all she stands for. No one should hear a crowd of people yelling kill him and she don't say anything about it. Campaign or no campaign. SNL got their ratings boosts off this woman.

You would think someone who could be president would have SOME sort of stage presence. She could have been the janitor. McCain or Obama or Biden would have dominated the stage and been the center of attention. How can anyone expect this pathetic excuse for a candidate to stand up and lead us in an emergency?

Americans are looking for some way for Palin to redeem herself, that way we can believe that McCain's choice of a VP was because he cares about the direction of the country rather than he is using her (to manipulate us) to win this election!

Palin was such a great sport. Shes got good dance too! " hold your hands in the air!" LOL But i loved the moose scene! HILARIOUS! Great going Sarah!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE SARAH! ALL of you haters are jealous, don't hate! it was one of the funniest skits of all time, and I don't understand why anyone would think she had planned to do it and then declined - she was campaigning and had no time to practice and it's not her style!!! it was meant to be amy, who is so funny

LOVE YOU SARAH!

Sarah Palin was just a prop on Saturday Night Live. She had about 4 lines total and looked really uncomfortable while on stage.

Tina Fey was funny and cute as Sarah Palin, but Sarah Palin as Sarah Palin was boring.

Luckily, we'll only have 2 more weeks of the real Sarah Palin!!!!

When Bill Clinton averred recently on Larry King that people underestimate Palin, I had to agree. The people who criticize her are so disrespectful and indecent that I shudder to think of the kind of leadership they would support. Palin did a good job during her interview on Charlie Rose, and I think that she's a very smart woman. People just can't get past her good looks!

Posted by franc October 20, 08 02:56 AM

Palin is not a "great lady," nor is she a "good sport." This is nothing more than a calculated, insidious attempt to boost McSame/Palin's poll numbers. Palin will do anything to weasel her way into the White House, along with McSame.
What is admirable about admiring someone who has contempt for the rights of women? What is likeable about someone who doesn't mind hurling racist slurs at her opponent--"palling around with terrorists, etc.?" What is "pro-life" about someone who would coerce women to remain pregnant even if they were the victims of rape or incest? Really hilarious, alright.

She's a natural, and fun to look at.

She believes that dinosaurs roamed the earth six thousand years ago, and she finally got a passport just last year.

Case closed.

Sarah Palin will be in the White House in a few weeks.

That is, back to her igloo in her Frozen North outpost, where she belongs, and from whence she can keep an eye on Putin rearing his head.

Arrogance & willful ignorance (never a good combination) are what we will remember of Caribou Barbie. Buh-bye honey!

It's amazing how we can accept a major VP candidate who if elected could be President NOT appearing before the media except staged friendly interviews with Hannity and Limbaugh. If Democrats did such a thing, Conservatives and Republicans would be screaming Foul.

This is all great discourse. Although I am by no means a supporter of Palin, I'd have to say, she at least gets Kutos for having the guts to face her foes. Unfortunately, as David and others have eluded to its all a ploy........the fake out out move. It was a weak attempt by a slumping party to appeal to our emotions since they've failed at demonstrating her political astuteness.

I'm with Marko. This is just another example of Palin getting ridiculously overblown kudos for basically not barfing on herself on camera. She barely said or did anything, and conspicuously declined to do anything very funny at all, showing that, in fact, se cannot laugh at herself. And yet the pundits are all unanimous that she was "fabulous." It's like they are all consciously humoring her, or more accurately, her supoorters.

Why do people who recognize Sarah Palin's limited appeal to Republican's fears and biases thru shear demagoguery, hold back thru politeness. She goes for the jugular with the Obama campaign, while sucking up to her own.
As for the SNL appearance, I have now seen it three times, and could not understand a single word of Poehler.s rap performance. But no luck finding it here online.. Why not?

Slightly off-topic, but candidate-related...Did anyone happen to catch Family Guy this weekend (yes, I'm ashamed) - notice where the McCain/Palin "plug" (if you can even call it that) was placed? I laughed MAO.

Have you seen any other country's candidates on such shows as SNL or Letterman? Here in America we need to start taking things more serious. I would have liked to see the candidates use the time more effectively and tell me what they are going to do when they get in office, and how they are going to do it. I see where Sen Obama has continuously ran a campaign ad on the cable and satellite channels. The negative campaigning and appearing on TV comedy shows is embarrassing. Lets address the issues.

An SNL appearance is great for a candidate whose image is very intense or serious, showing that they can lighten up. It goes without saying that Palin is not in that category. Everything about her is light. Her appearance just reinforced her vapid image. Another blunder by the McCain. Is the campaign being run by Ron Popiel?

Humility is a great quality in a leader, and it shows great courage for Gov. Palin to be a good sport and appear on SNL. That said, I do think a sitting Vice President would be far too busy to appear on SNL, so I believe this will be Sara's last appearance on the show for the next four years.

If Palin actually did the rap and popped a cap in that moose she woulda got the gangsta vote. Yet another bad repub campaign strategy.

#5 Michael, absolutely, SNL and other popular shows are doing their share to make important issues accessible. Don't forget Ellen Degenerate's asking McCain about her pending (gay) marriage and him not being able to indicate any support but just sit there and look cornered..

I don't find Sarah Palin shooting moose at all entertaining. Killing animals for sport is not funny not because I don't have a sense of humor; I just find hunting for entertainment disgusting. Sarah Palin on her own is funny in a very scary way.

Palin's attempt to "groove" while Amy performed was simply cringe-worthy. It felt like we were all watching our collective mom attempt to look cool as she chaperoned our school dance. So, let's all collectively roll our eyes while sighing "Mom... you're NOT cool!" and make sure we do NOT vote her in as our full-time school monitor in November.
