If the ad dollars show where the candidates think the race will be won or lost, then the real battlegrounds next Tuesday are Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Nielsen Media Research reported this afternoon that Barack Obama and John McCain aired about three-fourths of their swing-state spots in those three states, which combined offer 68 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House.

McCain tripled his ad buy in the seven key swing states, which also include Colorado, Georgia, Missouri, and Virginia, from Sunday to Monday to about 1,350 airings. But he still trailed Obama, who aired nearly 2,900.

Nielsen's numbers include national and local ads, as well as syndicated advertising, but not local cable ads.
