Union Leader backs McCain

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 15, 2008 10:28 AM

John McCain picked up the endorsement today of the newspaper that helped save his presidential bid in January.

The New Hampshire Union Leader, which ran a series of front-page editorials before the Granite State primary praising McCain and slamming rival Mitt Romney, said that in these uncertain times, "America needs an experienced, decisive leader with clear vision and a steady hand to guide us through. That man is Sen. John McCain."

"The troubles that will face the next President of the United States are numerous and perilous. They will test the character, the resolve and the mettle of the man we choose to deal with them. Of the two men who stand on the precipice of that great office, only John McCain has proved that he has what it takes to make the tough decisions in a time of crisis," the endorsement continued.

"Barack Obama's call for "change" has a certain appeal, to be sure. But this is no time to be rolling the dice on an untested leader whose rhetoric doesn't match his record when it comes to delivering actual change. John McCain has a long history of standing up to Washington's permanent political class, regardless of party, and pushing for institutional reforms to end business as usual. He is the right leader to restore trust in our government, confidence to our markets and prosperity to our country. On Nov. 4, do right by your country and vote for John McCain for President."

McCain won the New Hampshire primary, and is counting on winning the state's four electoral votes on Nov. 4 in what looks like an increasingly narrow path to the White House.

Barack Obama's call for change has failed to explain change from what to what.

Is he changing America's policy towards Israel? (will probably turn away from Israel)

Is he changing your right to free speech? (probably if he signs the Employee Free Choice Act and the legislation to ban conservative radio talk shows)

Is he changing your right to bear arms?

Is he changing our Constitution?

Is he changing your right to choose your vocation or will we all have to work for the government first when we get out of college?

In other shocking news, the sun came up today.

The Union Leader is the Fox News of New Hampshire newspapers. They would have backed the corpse of Hoover if it was propped up as the republican candidate.

Sad to know that New Hampshire cannot move on. The last eight years are way more than enough of the party who cannot lead. Senator McCain showed his lack of judgement with his choice of Governor Palin. Talk about a political move that did put America first! What was he thinking? He claims to put America first. Even conservative writers and leaders have called him on that. He also has been very uneven and erratic in his response to the current economic situation. He can't have good judgement on that. He doesn't understand the economic situation of the country or the people. He is too far removed and too underinformed.
Too bad the Union Leader has shown such a lack of good judgement.

And that will be the last union leader who backs pro-boss anti-worker McCain.

I guess the Union Leader neglected to consider how Palin found a spot on the ticket. Explain that and I'll buy the logic of experience.

I agree with the endorsement. I am voting for John McCain. I was worried about Sarah Palin, but I guess Madonna has a plan for that.

Change the headline - it sounds like a leader of an important union gave support to McCain, instead of a relatively small newspaper - now that would be news.

How many Republicans in a row does that make it for the Union Leader? In fact, has there ever been a Democrat they've endorsed for President?
Didn't think so.

The very fact that John McCain selected Sarah Palin as his running mate shows that he does not have "clear vision".
The Union Leader makes a good point when they talk about an "untested leader" - but I don't mean Barak Obama. I'm referring to Sarah Palin. Considering Senator McCain's age, his health history, which has included: four melanomas, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, there is a good chance that he won't be able to complete his term as president-which means there is a good chance Sarah Palin will become president of the United States.
This is a very scary -but very real possibility!

Everybody knows the Union Leader's endorsement goes to the highest bidder. Since John McCain's campaign has been "zero" on substance, and full of empty rhetoric and one pretty face, there's absolutely nothing shocking about this endorsement. Next thing you know they'll be running a pictorial of Ms. Palin. Is it just me, or has anybody else notice how her clothing seems to be getting a little more revealing with each passing day? I guess it diverts attention away from her less than truthful comments.

Can't wait for the pictorial Union Leader. It'll get your name in the Globe again.

Thanks Union for standing up at this time of crisis. I hope all the media will realized that there are many people who want to see President McCain, a true leader!!!!

My first reaction to the headline was that a union leader had endorsed McCain, surely significant, if not so significant as the endorsement by the New Hampshire Union Leader. Had I not read further - which I only did because it struck me as odd that McCain would have union endorsement - I may very well have been left with that impression. For clarity, I think it would have made more sense to disambiguate the word "union" in the headline. [Had every other significant word in the headline not been capitalized it may not have been an issue.]

Is this really a surprise? The Union Leader is a conservative publication...always has been, always will be. If I recall correctly, it was ranked one of the worst newspapers in America when I was in high school (I grew up in a town bordering Manchester).

McCain is too old to keep a steady temperament, he has shown total erractic behavior with all his changing talking points and most of all his running mate is pathetic ;
we can't take a chance on an uneven tempered old guy to even survive these tough times while jeopardizing America to a loose cannon or wing nut, Sarah Palin. She doesn't even reflect the morals and culture of the predominant US population. Get over it, the times are a changing and the world at large is looking for a dynamic new American leader and agent of change to resolve our multiple crisis such as the economy, our diminished standing in the world, and global warming. Barak can jump start this new vision NOT JOHN MCCAIN!!!!!!

Obama supporters are so blind to the truth. The reason we are in this crisis is because of Democrats blocking the energy policies and banking reform legislation sent to them by Bush and McCain. 15 times since 2001 Bush has said that Fannie and Freddie were problems . The standing president gets the blaim for any crisis. The Democrats tabled good legislation for political gain . Even Bill Clinton places blaim on the Democrats. If Americans really want change they first need to understand who is responsible for the crisis. It is very easy to connect the dots Follow the money and check the votes in senate this tells it all.

Do people really believe Barack Obama will be able to magically overthrow the US government's entire system of checks and balances and somehow impose a secret radical agenda he's got hidden up his sleeve?

Seriously?

Even Bush didn't entirely pull that one off, and he had the entire oil industry behind him.

Palin, thats all I have to say. So if you think your doing your country a service buy electing this ticket you need your head looked at. To endorse them is partisanship at its best because no one, and I mean no one should ever believe Palin is qualified to be in the white house, a heartbeat away from the presidency period.

If McShame had not been born with a silver epaulet in his mouth, he would be lucky to be a used car salesman. The same goes for Bush, except that it was a silver spoon. I would not buy a used political party from either of them.

""America needs an experienced, decisive leader with clear vision and a steady hand to guide us through. That man is Sen. John McCain.""
Seriously? Has this guy been in a hole?

""The troubles that will face the next President of the United States are numerous and perilous. They will test the character, the resolve and the mettle of the man we choose to deal with them. Of the two men who stand on the precipice of that great office, only John McCain has proved that he has what it takes to make the tough decisions in a time of crisis,""
So the fact that they have been the wrong decision, time and time again, doesn't bother him?
The fact is McCain wasn't the better choice when pitted against good ole "W" and he isn't now.

This election will boil down to retaining individual freedom and responsibility in America. Many have been swayed into believing that socialism is the only direction to take because of our current social and economic outlook. We have to take responsibility for our mistakes as a country and not relinquish them to a government. We will lose our freedoms if Obama is elected but we would have a fighting chance with McCain to once again to secure those freedoms.

How many of you critics of New Hampshire's Union leader have actually gone and read up on Obama's record yourselves. How many of you have checked into it in a dependable and reliable no bias sources and not just used the media or left wing wing nuts to do your thinking and research for you???? I have and what I found is down right scary. Before you criticize, do some actual fact digging on your own and use your own brain to figure out the truth. I dare you...

Nixon thought it would be a good idea to trade freely with a Communist country, and thought that illegal wiretapping was ok. Ford thought Poland was a free country. Reagan thought SDI would make us safe. Bush thought that atheists ought not to hold citizenship or have any rights, and thought that Dan Quayle was a smart man. He also thought Pearl Harbor was attacked on September 7th. And "W" was cocaine abusing, alcoholic fraud who hid behind his Vice President from the moment he took office.

But don't worry, McCain is going to be a REAL leader, we PROMISE this time!

Perhaps the newspaper is owned by the National Review, which fired Christopher Buckley for endorsing Obama.

Please name five good things Obama has said about the USA.
Name five good things he has done in the Senate.
Name one of his circle of frinds that does not hate our America.
Name five things he has done on his own.
The only change I see him bringing is his taking from the working and and paying the welfare people off for electing him.
Never was any of his family slaves in america!

Keep government resources from Palin pleas! She does not know how to handle power. If Alaska was a microcosm of America, then we are in big trouble. A leader who does not know the repercussions of unethical actions does not belong in the white house. For those who voted for bush in 2000 and 2004, you are reaping the rewards of your vote for an empty suit. McCain would have been a good candidate if only he did not choose Palin. I questions McCains organization judgment for not vetting Palin thoroughly. What kind of president would he be if were to make rash decisions based on instinct.

If you read all the comments, as I have; you will see a marked difference. The pro McCain Palin comments are primarily based from a factual reference point. The pro Obama comments are primarily emotional responses which are subjective without a need to be factually based, nor referenced. This includes the attacks on the Union Leader newspaper that allows the person to dismiss out of hand any truth the Union Leader may be using, or stating, to support it's position. The problem is the Democrats are empowered by the ignorant. The lies they tell are first heard, accepted, believed and then propagated. The mind is disconnected and you get the comments seen above. A truth: Democrats Destroy Decency.
