Today, they're taking a far different tack.
In the mostly pro-Obama crowds around tonight's debate site at Hofstra University in New York are people dressed up in amusement park-like costumes as cute orange squirrels, holding a cutout of an acorn.
The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, known as ACORN, claims to have registered 1.3 million people, but several states are investigating whether some of those registrations are fraudulent because they list nonexistent or dead people.
