World Series game could be delayed for Obama pitch

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 15, 2008 07:55 PM

For those who believe there's nothing more American than baseball and inclined to be suspicious of Barack Obama, this might be more grist for the he-isn't-patriotic-enough mill.

Several media outlets are reporting tonight that Fox and Major League Baseball have agreed to delay the start of Game 6 of the World Series so that Fox can join CBS and NBC in airing an unusual half-hour ad for Obama on Oct. 29, six days before the election.

Republicans immediately tried to put that spin on it. "It's unfortunate that the World Series' first pitch is being delayed for Obama's political pitch. Not only is Obama putting politics before principle, he's putting it before our national pastime," Republican National Committee spokesman Alex Conant said in a statement.

The start time of the game will be pushed back from 8:20 p.m to 8:38 p.m. -- eight minutes after Obama's commercial. Of course, one team might have won the Fall Classic in four or five games, making the sixth game -- and the issue -- moot.

Good lord -- now you can't even watch baseball without this man in your face! Pah-lease! Let's hope he gets the shaft and it never reaches 6 games.

Obama will be the next president of the United States. I am just so happy to have that thought in my head. Nice to see the most republican-biased news agency (Fox) do something intelligent for once. Let the people meet the visionary who will return the USA to a glorious country.

Lol..why am I not surprised that the RNC would put a spin on it. I'm sure if the McCaine campaign had come up with this idea we'd be hearing a whole different spin. Its not like the game is going anywhere. The last time I checked, FOOTBALL and not Baseball was America's favorite pastime. Infact baseball comes a distant 3rd after basketball. Check your facts!

What, whats that I smell.........Oh, its jealousy.......

Obama will be involved in basketball and be able to throw pitches at a baseball game, meanwhile McCain will be the number caller at a BINGO hall......

The future of our country is more important than our "national pastime." Alex Conant is spinning harder than a curve ball. I'm a registered independent and I am not offended by this. I thought it was members of the Democratic Party that were supposed to be the whiners? I'm getting pretty fed up. Barack Obama paid for the air time and it was agreed upon by Fox and MLB. This is capitalism, love it or not.

Baseball is the national past time officially and the president always throws out the first pitch of the year for the Orioles and, now that D.C. has them, the Nationals. We get not only the national anthem to start the game but "God Bless America" during the 7th inning stretch. As much as I a for Obama, I think this could backfire considering the two likely world series teams will come from swing states of Florida and Pennsylvania (two east coast teams that may not want to stay up the extra twenty minutes. It's a fair and logical criticism from the McCain campaign.

The decision to move the time of the game back is on the FOX network alone. They made the choice to change the start time in order to facilitate advertising revenue garnered by higher Nielson ratings. To blame this on anyone else is silly at best and paranoid at worst.

McSlain and the RNC would do and say anything to try to spin this in their favor. Barack Obama will be our next president and he will return the U.S. to the respected nation it once was and God willing, Cheney's heart murmur turns into a massive heart attack... SOON!

You know, I just don't care. Eight minutes is nothing.

Considering that I have not had TV (and not watched baseball) for over 30 years.

That eight minutes, along with every other eight minute piece of the last 30 years without baseball/tv will be spent with my hobbies of sewing, welding, and making lighted clear plastic raincoats!

Its a tactic that is in poor taste. I don't care which of them would do it, its wrong. I want to watch the WS not Obama.
Obama shouldn't have asked for that time slot plain and simple. He thinks its all about him. Did you hear his promise tonight -- to work 24/7 for the American people. Hmmm really, can't wait for that first vacation he takes.
Leave baseball alone - he's just trying to show his love for America -- trying to undo his wife's open mouth insert foot.
Let's hope Philly or TB/Sox sweep the series so its a big waste of his time :)

GO SOX!!!

Its bad enough that all these playoff games have had very late starts on schoolnights (and worknights). We're having a damn recession and we'll be needing baseball. I say take the playoffs away from Fox! They do a terrible job.

What's with 9/11 crying? When we were bombed at Pearl Harbor we didn't burn the constitution and start torturing people. The republicans forgot 9/11 when they let Bin Laden walk to Pakistan with his camel. We then invaded Iraq for it's oil. Good new yesterday though 4 of the big oil companies got 30 year contracts to control Iraq oil fields. It’s official "Mission Accomplished"

This country used to be about creating jobs now it's about creating profits.

Here's the question you have to ask yourself: if it was McCain, would they delay the game? Look at the media coverage and answer honestly...no, they wouldn't. Why can't Barry just buy an earlier time slot that night?

I just can't say anything else; if this doesn't make you sick; well, you love Obama, and not our country. His one statement in the last debate"Most of you here remember 9-11"; turned me off completely. I saw those men and women jumping to their deaths. I heard the screams of pain as they were burning to death, and I saw the collapse of the towers. I'm a proud independent, with both Democratic and Repubican votes to my record It's the man(or woman), not a party. But 9-11 changed me. The sights, and smells, and death that lay all around, will never go away. This mans' attitude, I and my Democratic friends, and famlies, will change our votes and vote for McCain. Remeber 9-11. Never Forget.

Barack "ACORN" Obama is anathema to everything that my Christian faith; and, my National pride stands for.
In spite of the determined attempts of the Obama handlers to obfuscate the details concerning Obama's subversive background, more and more Americans are seeing thru the Obama charade; and, are making an objective appraisal based on their own intelligence of the historical facts which are irrefutable. Contrary to his politically expedient commentary, Obama, who in an unguarded moment on ABC referenced "My Muslim Faith", is NOT a Christian in any recognizable sense. Unless he has had one of his very frequent epiphanies in the last week or two, he is a disciple and practitioner of Black Liberation Theology whose tenants have been amply articulated by Jeremiah Wright and James Cone. For 20yrs. Obama, under the tutorial of the fanatical Reverend Wright, immersed himself and his family in Black Liberation Theology, a Marxist derivative which rejects Christianity; and, which professes that the White race is equivalent to the Devil. It's amazing that anyone would be shocked at Obama's perverted view of the Bible, concerning which Obama recently publicly mocked Jesus Christ's "Sermon On The Mount". Rev. Wright's mentor, Black Liberation theologian, James Cone, in his book "For My People" states: "The Christian faith does not possess in its nature the means for analyzing the structure of capitalism. Marxism, as a tool of social analysis, can disclose the gap between appearance and reality, and thereby help Christians to see how things really are." It is this logic, reinforced by his parents who were avowed Marxists, which has schooled Obama to seek economic parity in America thru income redistribution; i.e. Marxist Socialism; and, IS AN OVERRIDING THEME OF HIS CAMPAIGN. Obama's repeated references to "economic parity" and "social justice" are simply Marxist jargon for "Taking more from you and giving it to others for the common good". Further, noone should be surprised at Obama's proclamation that American is NOT a Christian Nation. This from a man who is a fanatical advocate of the abhorrent procedure of partial-birth-abortions; and, the infanticide of babies who survive a blotched abortion, referring to them as "Medical waste." Although the Obama campaign has painstakingly attempted to lay a smokescreen to confuse the past religious associations of their candidate, hopefully a Christian America will send Obama an unmistakable message in November. A man who labored feverishly in his attempt to engineer an American defeat in Iraq. It's what you get with an un-vetted candidate whose only skill is reciting a text from a teleprompter while even Jesse Jackson admits Obama arrogantly looks down his nose and "talks down to the audience." A characteristic which was front and center in Obama's comments about bitter folks in Small Town America who "Cling to their religion." Greg Neubeck

To comment #11 ("fair and balanced...way to go FOX"), the "FOX" network in this case might be part of the same corporation, but -this- FOX is NOT the FOX News Channel, but FOX broadcast...whose lineup is about as liberal-leaning as it gets (aside from "24" and -maybe- the sports and some of its game shows).

Secondly, people should write CBS, NBC, FOX and tell tem they will not BUY any products advertised along with the obama bs program.

Apparently the only thing the major media and cooperate america understands is M O N E Y....so come on RED STATE Americans, let show them there really is a silent majority!

We've had 8 years of a dumb, boneheaded, president. I'll be nice to have a intellegent person, who earned his degree, running this country. Republicans are hypocrites, who are too selfish to put this country before their wallets or guns. Bush has socialized the banks to help the rich and at the expense of all Americans.

this is really sad, the country would like to take a break from politics for just an evening to enjoytheir favorite sport........
And now Obama has to intrude on that too....
can we get a break from this guy????

the best way around this is not to turn the TV on till his little commercial is over with....
I had to do this for 8 years with Clinton in office, change the station, turn the sound down etc...I could not stand to hear Clinton's voice, I already feel this way about Obama
even after Clinton left office, he could not handle not being in the limelight

ALL I CAN SAY IS BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR,
people do not understand where this country is headed if he becomes President

This HAS happened before - in 1986 and 1988 MLB delayed the start of World Series game 5 so NBC could air The Cosby Show from 8:00 - 8:30pm; in 1987 ALCS game 2 and in 1989 NLCS game 2 both started at 8:37pm so NBC could air The Cosby Show from 8:00 - 8:30pm. The whole thing is like Jerry Maguire - SHOW ME THE MONEY!

I am aware by your stupid comments that many of you haven't a clue what Socialism is, nor why it started to take hold in European countries where they were ruled by a Noble class & Aristocracy, who came to power by birthright alone . We never had that here. (remember all those immigrants that came here & are still coming?). Redistribution of wealth, taking from one class to give to another (doesn't work), control of the press (in our time, the media), promises that appeal to ignorant masses (no excuse now, we have internet), change the old system & a better one in its place (Hitler, was a genius at this). Be careful what you wish for. Oh, & another adage: "Show me your friends, & I'll tell you who YOU are." Yes, there will be change for sure.

careful what you wish for.

Smart people don't put a baseball game above the man who is going to run our country for the next four years or more. Neither baseball players nor their fans will affect my life! They will not make any difference at all. The fact that so many are whining about an opportunity to watch a candidate on TV correct the lies McCain is spreading, and get his points across to those who couldn't come out and see him in person, shows the ignorant state of America. After all, if Americans weren't so ignorant, they wouldn't keep voting in oil men who dont' gve a chit about them!!!!!!

There was no need for Obama to take over the TV stations at the inconvenience of the World Series. He has eaten up more than his share of TV air time. I'm glad that Fox has delayed the start of the game tonight.
For more than a year I have debated over whom to vote for, McCain or Obama. Congratulations, Senator McCain. You have my vote.
