Americans OK with one-party rule

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 11, 2008 04:12 PM

While half of Americans disapprove of how Democratic leaders in Congress are doing their job, a majority believes that one-party control of Capitol Hill and the White House will be good for the country, according to a new survey.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released this afternoon found that 47 percent approve of the job Democratic congressional leaders are doing and 50 percent disapprove.

But 59 percent say that Democratic control of the House, Senate, and presidency will be good for the country, while only 38 percent say it will be bad for the nation.

That may be because Republicans are decidedly less popular -- only 24 percent approve of how GOP leaders in Congress are doing their job, while 73 percent disapprove.

Still, 86 percent said they wanted to see Republican policies included in any legislation that is passed. And when asked whether they would trust President-elect Barack Obama or Democratic leaders in Congress more if they disagree, 59 percent said Obama.

The poll was conducted Nov. 6-9 and has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

With all of the problems facing our great Nation it is easy to see why one party rule would help to get actions to repair our Nation. There will not be fighting between 2 parties to set the course to be followed. We need a fast response to the economy already stalled by the 2 party system we have in place. Ask any unemployed worker who's benefits are running out how they feel about the current stall by the administration on any stimulus, which would extend benefits. I hope that this administration puts politics aside and helps start the repair that should start now instead of making Americans wait until January 20th.

DAVEFROMGA pretty much illustrates why the GOP got creamed this election. His post is an example of they think is intelligent policy debate.

Dave, if you think Russians are Communists I've got a bridge and $150K worth of women's clothing to sell you.

By the way, your ignorance is showing.

There are times in our history when one-party rule is beneficial and other times when it's better to have a split Congress to keep things from getting out of hand. With the problems this country is facing today, this is undoubtedly one of the former. It's going to take at least 2-4 years of Democratic control to undo the damage caused by 12 years of Republican control in Congress (6 of those with a Republican president as well).

After that, well, if history teaches us anything, it's that the Democrats (if they remain in control for a long time) will eventually become the party of corruption and over-reaching (as the Republicans did), and then things will start to swing back the other way.

I'm an American and I'm not OK with it. A one party rule means nothing but a dictatorship, the same as when the Republicans had it. And why wasn't this stupid headline up when the Republicans had a one party rule? We are facing socialism in this country and everyone is too busy masturbating over the fact we have a black president in a few months.

The most contradictory poll I have ever read.

Holy cow, did they put crack in the water this year?

It would be nice if the idiotic pundits would finally end the oft-repeated nonsense that "voters like divided government" -- you listening, Cokie "Mindless Blather" Roberts?" -- because, as this poll shows, it's just not true. Few if anyone goes into a voting booth and specifically splits their vote to bring about so-called divided government. It's pure fiction. Total nonsense.

Communism doesn't work for Russia. It doesn't work anywhere. Good thing Democrats aren't communists, and one-party control of the government doesn't equal communism.

Communism is an economic philosophy which contrasts with philosophy, and it was only villified in the Western world because of the Cold War. It's a great theory - but people are too corrupt to handle it. The definition of communism is "a theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state."

So until Congress starts taking away your property and claiming it for the State, shut up. Stop using excessive exclamation points, and go back to school so you can learn about real political philosophy, as opposed to what you're fed by the media.

One party rule?
There was a great line from Star Wars III where Amidala is in the Senate and says, "So this is how liberty dies... with thunderous applause." Hope this isn't prophetic.......

You have got to be kidding. One party rule is exactly why we broke off from Britain and why this is too much power to put into the hands of any one person or party. Sure, you're going to get alot done, but you're not going to like the result. Just ask anyone who has been able to get out of Venezuela or Cuba.

I can't believe there are voters who are this naive.

1 party states have never succeeded over the long haul. Others have set up 1 party states, that those ultimately failed in major disasters. We should always be wary of having 1 group of like minded people lead. A little while ago, we had Republicans in control of both, not many seem to thrilled with their job. Our answer? Do the same thing with the other party. P.S. I wish I knew how the questions were framed in these polls/surveys...I answer one way and the surveyor places the answer in a category I don't necessariy agree with.

Well, they didn't poll me. I hate having one party, especially the the Communist party...oops, I mean the Democratic party... ruining the country and stealing our freedoms. Hey everyone! Newsflash! Get ready for the Communist regime to take over. Say good-bye to your freedom of speech, your freedom to support and defend the Constitution, your right to keep and bear arms and say hello to some sort of "civilian security force", aka Gestapo, wealth re-distribution (the government stealing from those who worked for their money). Maybe it's time for another Tea Party.

For the last 20 years, I have looked at John McCain as the type of fresh idealism needed at the national level, admired the way he worked with leaders of a different nature such as Joe Lieberman and his unselfish commitment to national interest. This began long before I ever heard of Barack Obama. I wish that Obama could take the unlikely step of overcoming past inhibitions to include McCain in his cabinet, all party selfishness and the campaign aside. Then I truly could feel that this is a government that will work. Obama is not the usual Democrat and McCain is not the usual Republican. Both men defy traditions in the better sense.

WOW...............I love how people throw out COMMUNISM and SOCIALISM like they know what they are talking about. Read a book people having one party in control of the three branches of our government is a far cry from Communism. Man republicans loose control of the Executive branch of government and its like the sky is falling. I bet if the republicans were in this situation Dave from Georgia would not be so heavy on his punctuation and would figure out that his caps lock is on. Get a life, its not like this happened over night, we have been leaning towards this for the last 4 years. I am not saying it is the best thing but its here and there is nothing we can do about it other than what happened last week.

I used to think I was kind of Democrat. Since this election, I know I am decidedly not Democrat. I wish we could organize a 3rd party. Time to innovate!!!!

Yes-you stupid republicans!!! You know our secret plan but it's too late for you!! We're going to force everyone to become homosexual and make you choose between having you or a terrorist kill your families! HAHAHAHAHAHA! Yes, we know you all yearn for the days when the government spied on you (in the name of freedom!) and locked people up indefinitely without charge because they were baaaaad and you are so gooooood. But we hate your freedom! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
So, tell me-to become a republican you must pass "I'm a certified retard" test, right?

There's nothing inherently commmunist about one party rule. Idaho has had one party rule for the last two decades, and it's not such a bad place to live, and certainly not communist by any stretch of the imagination. I think some ignoramuses have just got their knickers in a wad about WHICH party is in charge. I've lived in several states where one party (either Dem or Rep) runs things, and it's not the end of the world. In fact, for state or county government, it makes things more efficient. But yes, at the federal level sometimes a little gridlock to gum up the works can keep one party (either one) from running amok. If you believe that EITHER of these two parties has all the right answers, then you are brainwashed. Neither party is all that great, and in this country we have the ILLUSION of democracy, but both parties are essentially puppet regimes, and it really doesn't mattter which party APPEARS to be in charge, "these" oligarchs or "those" oligarchs.

Emily and Jared from Dallas.... You do have a valid point. The United States is not a communist nation. The checks and balances created by the Judicial, Executive, and Legislative branches do not exist in a communist society.
What people are pointing out is that Obama has some very socialistic ideals. Socialism is the slow road to communism. The ultimate goal of both is that everything is distributed for the common good and individuals have no responsibility to provide for themselves; the community provides for all members. It's a beautiful idea, but it only works when everyone works just as hard as he is able.
Both the Pilgrims and Jamestown found that communal living didn't work. The loafers sought to live off the industrious fellows, creating an unnecessary burden. John Smith finally decreed that he who did no work did not eat. Once everyone was left to provide for himself, everyone had a reason to work hard.
I would even go so far to say that yes, Emily, the government is taking away our property. Every society must pay taxes to run the government and support the military, but when a government start taking money from your paycheck to pay for the medical bills, retirement, and education expenses of perfect strangers, the government begins to encroach upon personal property.
Our government was created to protect our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Founding Fathers never intended that the government would ensure everyone would keep up with the Jonses. They just wanted to provide each man equal opportunity to keep up with them through hard work and determination.

2000 till 2006 we had one party rule by the republcans and look where that got us. Maybe the Dems will do better, but if not we vote them out.
By the way for the uneducated people the economic collapse started 3 years ago at in the middle of 2005, that is why the Dems took control in 2006 and we had nothing but stalemate since.
