Cindy McCain defends Palin

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 3, 2008 08:43 PM

Cindy McCain, in one of first full-length interviews of the campaign, comes to Sarah Palin's defense tonight.

"She is marvelous and I just have such great respect for her...She has done nothing but help this ticket," McCain, wife of GOP presidential candidate John McCain, says on CNN's "Larry King Live." .

King asks whether Palin has received a "bad rap."

"Oh yes. I mean, she draws enormous crowds," McCain replies, according to excerpts released by CNN. "She's been an inspiration to women all over the world and absolutely I think she was treated very poorly in the press. She is truly a unique and a very gifted woman in all the things she has done and what a great vice president she will make."

Asked about the flap over the $150,000 spent by the Republican National Committee on Palin's wardrobe and care, McCain said, "With all that's going on now with our economy being where it is and with - we're in two wars, with everything else that's going on worldwide I thought it was really a very silly thing to be upset about."

I really hope that we don't see too much of either Cindy McCain or Sarah Palin after tomorrow. $150,000 is a silly thing to be upset about? Hey Cindy, how about raising 3 kids with ONE mortgage, one car and both parents working to make $60,000 --- to us that $150,000 means a lot.

oh, ya?!! "very silly thing to be upset about"!!!! when the economy is in a crisis and there are two wars, a prospective leader should be using her campaign money to buy $150,000 on clothes and make up? if this is not upsetting than what is?

Cindy McCain is a joke, just like Sarah Palin. I'm surprised she can talk -- someone must have pulled the string hanging out her back.

An inspiration to women all over the world?! Please. Sarah Palin cares about one woman only, and that's herself. She's a primadonna who knows absolutely nothing about the struggles of women all over the world. She knows nothing except as it relates to her. What a dunce -- she will never be a force for anything in politics, and she will be properly reviled after Nov. 4. Good riddance!

With people losing their savings & jobs, it does seem more than silly if not immoral for the Republican party to spend so much on clothing. It would have made much more sense to spend funds on educating Palin on the economy and foreign affairs!

Of course concerns about spending tens of thousands of dollars would seem silly to Cindy McCain....she spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on clothes, shoes, personalized bedding, etc. She is a multi millionaire with so many homes her husband has lost track of them. She was a young heiress when she met John, who was old enough to be her Father and married to boot That didn't stop her from sleeping with him. She gets what she wants with her money. People with that much money don't know how the middle class and working poor struggle just to keep food on their tables and out of debt. Cindy has always had enough money to buy whatever she wants...$ 150,000 on clothes is chump change, not even worth mentioning.

wow.. what a stupid woman. "silly thing" is that your husbands running mate spent more than she ever made in any year as mayor, on clothes to make her an 'acceptable candidate".

Cindy McCain thinks $150,000 is a 'silly thing' because she would have spent $350,000!

$150k is silly to Cindy. Waste American's money! Just $100k was enough for Charles Keating to buy Senator McCain.

Cindy, you don’t seem to realize that our next President will not only have to manage the nation but also play a leading role in international affairs. If the inarticulate, provincial George Bush was an embarrassment compared to the likes of Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Angela Merkel, Nicolas Zarkosy, Jan Peter Balkenende and other leaders of the free world, then should McCain die in office and Sarah Palin become President, she would be a total joke.

Palin's experience as PTA president, mayor of a small town, (pop. 5,000), two-year governor of a sparsely populated state (pop. 500,000) doesn’t quite cut it; nor does her hockey mom, beauty queen, academic disadvantaged, religious fundamentalist, folksy, persona do much for her presidential, world-leader image. Then there are the pending concerns that are likely to escalate into media-fodder scandals should she take office—her abuse of power, her pregnant daughter’s shotgun wedding, her involvement with the Alaska Independence Party, her allowing the First-Dude to meddle in government business, and other issues about her personal life and character that would no doubt crop up over time.

Barack Obama, of course, has his share of shortcomings. As a one-term Illinois senator and two-year U.S. senator, his experience is scant, but, at least, by serving in a various Senate committees, he has acquired some inside knowledge on national and international affairs.

John McCain at the outset was the better qualified candidate. Had he picked Joe Lieberman or someone else of equal stature as his running mate, he would now be double digits ahead of Obama in the polls. Sarah Palin did energize the lowest common denominator of the conservative base, but in so doing, she has alienated many undecided voters who would have made the difference on November 4. Joe Lieberman may be short on charisma, but by dint of his knowledge and unblemished record, he would eventually have won over the conservative base and most undecided voters as well.

Also, the fact that McCain allowed his staffers to foist Palin on him sight unseen (clearly, she was not on his short list) betrays a lack of leadership. He might yet win the election, but if he loses, it will be largely because of Sarah Palin.

Cindy McCain said, "With all that's going on now with our economy being where it is and with - we're in two wars, with everything else that's going on worldwide I thought it was really a very silly thing to be upset about."

What a stupid comment. The economy being where it is is the very reason people were upset with Palin's swank wardrobe.

While I have respect for the McCains, the choice of Sarah Palin as VP is insulting to intelligent and accomplished women here in the United States. While I do not doubt her ability to govern a sparsely populated state, it is drastically different than potentially being president. To have never traveled outside of the US to understand people from cultures different than her own, speaks volumes. Most importantly, when she made the decision to seek public office, the fact that she did not choose to expand her horizons and to educate herself shows her lack preparedness and inability to govern at a time when foreign policy is so crucially important to our country's future.

I'm sure Cindy McCain must have been pleased when John picked Sarah Palin to be his running mate. Finally, a woman that would be a bigger drag on the GOP ticket than the potential, first lady, drug addict.

As for the attention given Mrs. Palin's wardrobe: both women should be ashamed at the money they have spent on clothing when the nation is suffering. I think a First Lady should look nice but Cindy McCain's wardrobe budget could but how many insurance policies? Save how many families from foreclosure? Buy how many soldiers body armor?

Ladies, think about your images!

#1, what's wrong with beauty queens? At least they have won something. Obama has won nothing, ever. He's a good for nothing and Michelle Obama was about to dump him until the wicked Pelosi found an opportunity to wield power by putting Obama up as a the first Black president. Obama has no real abilties or knowledge to function as President. He's Pelosi's mouthpiece and puppet.

I know the family Sarah Palin comes from. Her dad was my teacher in Alaska. He is a very honest and caring individual and he raised those kids right. He didnt take any smack from the kids. He was a very fair and upstanding citizen.

Of course she is defending her, Cindy was the one to suggest her as VP pick to her husband. I saw them disclose that information in an interview with Mary Hart with ET. She said she kept mentioning Sarah to her husband, because after meeting Sarah, she was so impressed with her as a mother. For goodness sake, we aren't hiring a daycare provider. We are electing the Vice President to the United States!!!

I can't believe that people are so hard on Palin for her spending habits...uh, has any democrat looked at the spending of Obama? Didn't they hear (or did they just not want to listen) that Obama has outspent McCain 3 to 1? How narrow minded can you be? This is the problem with everyone that is against the Republican ticket. They take what they want to hear and disregard the rest no matter how relevant.

Oh yeah, then let sarah go home and take care of all the needs of her kids including her 17 year old "child having a child'. This is crazy.. Also i was stunned to hear she has "so much respect' for Cheney, what planet does this woman live on, oh yeah Richville.

Something isn't right with cindy, She lookss so strained. i would really like to know why she jhad to numb out so badly on her pain pills she stole. i think she is really lonely in her marriage.

Clothing? This country is so concerned about her wardrobe that it makes me sick. How much do you think Obama spends on his clothing? Do you think Obama spent $250 on his suit? Anyone price a suit lately? I am not talking about the suits from the local strip mall. I am referring to the completely tailor fit suits that politicians wear. And do you think he wears the same suit every day?

As for shoes, do you think he buys a $40 pair from Wal-Mart? Oh, and I am sure he resoles his shoes because that is what a good American does! HAH! With all of the walking that they do, I am sure politicans go through a lot of shoes. And I know this is a reach, but are men or women shoes more expensive?

This is a silly thing to talk about. Honestly. Her wardrobe got more press than the AIG executives who are trying to take billions of dollars from the buyout plan as a bonus. Did anyone on here mention that issue? Nope, let's talk about how we can't afford the same clothes as Sarah Palin. She has fought to keep pork out of bills and away from corporations and have succeeded.

As for the comment about taking care of her kids, How many women are in the workforce today? She is not the only one. I guess every woman who has a job sucks at being a mom. If this is the best arguments that you all can come up with, we are in BIG trouble.

Posted by Disgruntled November 4, 08 07:00 PM

Obama bought his own suits from his capitalist earnings. Therefore they aren't our business. Socialist Palin wants others to buy her clothes despite laws against it and fly her kids around and pay her per diem for staying in her own house.

Palin didn't fight any pork. Alaska is the greatest per capita at getting pork. She originally supported the pork bridge to nowhere. Palin rigged the gas pipeline bid process so her pals could pork it up.

Does every working Mom not teach their daughter to use condoms? If they don't yes they suck at being a Mom especially if they drag that daughter onto TV for political gain.

Actually, Palin would have been excellent as second in command, although she would have needed to become more familiar with a lot of material. She is a bright, gutsty person.

I urge the Clintons to join McCain and Palin now that the damage is done. What could the Clintons have been thinking --putting the entire free world at risk with this dishonest, dangerous demegogue who supports illegal, violent attacks on innocent people in Kenya, who believes in a left of Cuban policy of stealing from the productive to give to those who want to do nothing. Now the U.S. has a leader who encourages terrorists, racists and thugs.

Yes, I too was snowed at first by Obama. But after some time, I realized that he was not what he appeared to be and that the media were hiding his true nature, agenda and contacts.

This is a very dark day for America. But McCain fought the good fight and I respect his decency and heart. I send my deepest thank yous to McCain and Palin for fighting for America. I pray that they will realize that the election of Obama is the greatest crisis that could ever befall this country. I pray that they will keep their contact websites up, keep running those Obama fact ads and reach out to the Clintons and to all good people who care about democracy and freedom.

Sarah Palin's record on her rejection of endangered species act, and environment issues: (offshore drilling is safe? ok, Sarah) is dreadful. She is suing to take Polar bears off of their rightful spot on the endangered list, is an avid hunter, and lifelong member of the NRA.She supports the aerial sharpshooting in AK of wolf packs and their pups who are "in the way" near wildlife PRESERVE! She gives bounty each time a wolf leg is presented. Cindy McCain: "Oh, I thought that was a really silly thing to worry about, with 2 wars and everything... Me: " You supported the war, you idiot!"

She offers hunters a $150 bounty if they present a fresh killed wolf leg! McCain voted for a 3 Million dollar Grizzly bear research project in MT. Cindy McCain's defense of Palin on 11/3/08 was a last ditch attempt at saving McCain's bid for President. However, after McCain's outstanding concessions speech, Cindy's disregard for Palin was so painfully obvious. After McCain spoke, he hugged Sarah Palin and shook Todd's hand. Cindy NEVER acknowledged the Palins presence on stage before, during or after the speech, but walked off the stage with John and THEN only acknowledged and hugged the well-wishers off stage. Regardless of the Palin factor, Sarah, at the request of the McCain campaign, joined his army. She gave up time with her family only to be disregarded by Cindy, an obviously bitter woman. Shame on Cindy. Was she jealous of the attention Palin received by McCain's supporters? Does she blame her for his defeat? Cindy needs to take a good hard look at John's organizers, and then at her petty behavior in front of a world stage. Her true colors were on full display and they were not pretty. Cindy, a first-class first lady? Not even close. First-class arrives at the White House on January 20, 2009.

What most people do not realize as it relates to Cindy Mccain is how much charitable work she does. She has given more to help people than Obama and Biden put together. She has lots of money, but at least she does give back. I can't say that for Obama and Biden who only gave 1 to 3 percent of their income to charity. So you can talk about Cindy Mccain all you want, her works speak for her. Most people just don't know because they judge without knowing the facts. Obama doesn't even help his Aunt in a Boston Housing Project, and people think he is really going to help poor people. PLEASE!!! Don't drink the Obama kool-aid!

A point for all to keep in mind, there WAS no mandate, the "American People" didn't vote for Obama en masse, 3% more voted for Obama, who won 52/46. Had that 3% voted for McCain, he would have won by the same margin. That's 3 people out of a hundred, some of whom were misguided by the demos and their press groupies into believing that everything bad that happened in the last 8 years was the fault of the Republicans. Let's try to keep it in perspective. Possibly 3% will build up an immunity to kool-aid or an aversion to BS, or finally hold the democrats responsible again for what they do and don't do in the next 2-4 years, I'll hope so.

You're all liberal cretons. First off, about the clothes: ask the Obamas how much they have invested in clothes. Ask Hillary Clinton. The GOP paid for the clothes and is sending them back. Also, they bought multiples sizes in the same outfit to assure a fit, so much of that cost wasn't even on outfits she kept. And it doesn't matter- it's all going back anyway or being donated.

It's a shame to see people continue the "hate the rich" sentiment. How many of you have spent any length of time in foreign countries providing surgeries to children with deformities? HOw many children have you helped? Cindy McCain is a passionate and wonderful person. She would make a much better first lady than that white people hater Michelle Obama will. What does she have to offer? What type of philanthropic activies are she invlved in? What are her goals? Can you answer that question?
