How McCain can pull it off

Posted by James F. Smith, National Political Editor November 3, 2008 06:58 PM

By Susan Milligan, Globe staff

WASHINGTON -- President John McCain: it could happen.

True, the math looks pretty daunting for the Arizona senator as voters head to the polls tomorrow. On paper, it seems improbable, with Democrat Barack Obama leading in every major national poll, as well as in numerous battleground states expected to determine the winner.

But impossible? There have been greater comebacks. The Red Sox recovered from a three-game deficit in 2004 to win four games straight against the Yankees, as Sox star pitcher Curt Schilling, a McCain supporter, noted in Peterborough, New Hampshire, on Sunday as he stumped with the GOP nominee.

And while Obama has run a relatively error-free campaign, political experts notes, "almost perfect" doesn't guarantee the big prize.

``The Patriots lost the Super Bowl,'' noted Frank Donatelli, deputy director of the Republican National Committee, referring to the Pats' loss in the Super Bowl last season after an otherwise perfect season. As for the polls, alternately revered and dreaded by the campaigns, Donatelli is skeptical.

``Everywhere I've gone, there is just tremendous enthusiasm'' for McCain, Donatelli said today in between visits to Virginia, Pennsylvania, Missouri and Ohio. ``These polls that show a huge disparity between Republican and Democratic [turnout] are just not going to pan out,'' he said.

Political analysts have handicapped the race for Obama, predicting he will win all of the states Democrat John Kerry took in 2004, plus a combination of victories in Iowa, New Mexico, Colorado -- and possibly Virginia and Nevada -- that would put Obama over the 270 electoral majority mark. Obama is also competitive in in Florida, North Carolina and Ohio, and even once reliably-GOP states like Montana and Georgia are in play. The battle for Missouri is a dead heat.

Still, the races in the battleground states are still quite close, with Obama's numerical edge well within the margin of error. Further, McCain has edged up in a couple of polls in North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania, giving Republicans hope for a major upset.

``Nothing's over until it's over. While polls in a lot of these key swing states show Obama with slim to modest leads, there is always the possibility of late movement in public opinion,'' said Michael Dimmock, associate director of the Pew Research Center.

McCain would almost certainly have to win Pennsylvania and its 21 electoral votes to beat Obama, they said. ``There's a mathematical way to do it, but it's an inside straight at best,'' Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, said in assessing McCain's challenge.

It's possible to come up with arithmetic that would leave the electoral college vote tied at 269-269. In that case, the decision would go to Congress, with the House choosing the president (each state's delegation would get one vote) and the Senate choosing the vice president.

The votes would be taken in the next Congress, and since Democrats are expected to expand their majorities in both chambers, Obama and Senator Joe Biden would likely be sent to the White House, said Judith Best, a political science professor at the State University of New York College at Cortland. But the likelihood of that happening is extremely small, she said.

Of course, the Buffalo Bills were losing by 32 points into the third quarter against the Houston Oilers in the 1993 AFC Wild Card playoff game, only to come back and beat the Oilers 41-38, eventually advancing to the Super Bowl.

Are all those sports comeback scenarios warming the hopes of McCain supporters? ``We remember those games because quite likely, it will never happen again,'' said Andrew Smith, director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center.

Kind of a silly "analysis," isn't it? Comparing a candidate far behind in the polls to a sports team behind in a game or a series? A team can always win if it has the skill, even if the score suggests for the moment its opponent has more skill. It's a tightly controlled situation involving a few people in a stadium. And a few lucky breaks can make a big difference in one game. What does any of that have to do with a presidential race? McCain can win--if the polls are grossly inaccurate. Otherwise, all the skill in the world won't cause millions of people to vote one way when the day before they were inclined to vote a different way.

This has to be the softest "journalism" I've read in weeks. Why don't you just save us all the thirty seconds it took to read your fluff piece and redirect directly to Pollster, 538 or RCP instead (where we'll actually get an answer to the question you pose at the beginning of your stupid article.)

How McCain can pull it off: transform into a sports franchise and win despite overwhelming odds. Honestly it's not even worth refuting. You're a terrible writer.

THE SUCCESS OF THE RED SOX WAS A RESULT OF THEIR GAME PLAY AND NOT A SUDDEN CHANGE OF HEART BY THE AUDIENCE. THE OUTCOME OF THE GAME WAS IN THE HANDS OF THE RED SOX, THE OUTCOME OF THE ELECTION IS ENTIRELY IN THE HANDS OF PUBLIC AMERICA. NOT THE SAME THING!!

how can you compare sports stats and political poll stats? it doesn't even make sense. sports stats are based on actual player and team physical performance. whereas polls are other people's opinion and their likelyhood to vote of them. if sports teams' wins/losses were based on how we vote for them then that would be a fair comparison. what a waste of time.

Seriously, why do you political commentators always INSIST on making sports analogies? This isn't a race to grab a meaningless collection of wins for a trophy. Unlike baseball, the "winner" doesn't just get a famous tally, but an absurd mess of problems to deal with and a world of issues to face. Unlike baseball, candidates ("teams") have extremely different ideas and philosophies and very different goals.

The American idea of this election being a game is disgusting. That we compare an educated vote to a "point" due to some cunning sports play really undermines the whole idea of an election, as well as voter intelligence. It doesn't help that we as a people have become so pliable and, frankly, ignorant enough to be swayed by advertising and mass media and red herrings. (Yes, I say that as an Obama supporter.)

Stop trying to distill one of the most important elections in our history to a petty sports game. McCain will lose because the American people are sick of modern GOP policies, insulted by his embarrassing choice of VP, and saddened by his sellout out to the most vulgar of the Republican base -- not because he made any "errors" during his campaign.

Bad anology and logic. If the Red Sox's win were determined by the pollsters they would have lost. The battle is being determined by the folks who are being polled, hence Red Sox \( Read McCain) would lose.

She tosses out a pair of sports analogies to prove her point that McCain still has a chance in a political election. I'm not sure if this is a categorical error or just plain dumb - either way it's hogwash. How about, McCain's down by twenty-something, his old knee injury's acting up and time just expired? If you're going for sports, honey, that would probably be closer to the mark!

It would be incredible despite being outspent 2 to 1 and having the Media act in the most revoltingly biased manner ever.

The Globe is putting years of journalistic integrity on the line for a man who has been tied up in the rackets in Chicago. You can not defend Obama's house purchase with Rezko, any involvement is abominable. He plugged Bill Ayers book. He almost broke a record voting "Present", he voted 97% down party lines, he took more from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac than everyone but Chris Dodd, has less experience than anyone running for President in the past 50 years, etc. etc. etc. Beyond that, he wants to spread the wealth, is poisoned with vanity, is critical of the Founding Fathers and wants Supreme Court Justices to be pawns in his social engineering. Add to that a congress dominated by the furthest left wingers in decades, I appeal to the better senses of the Globe and its readers to heed the word of Arnold Schwartzeneger and not change this nation to that of a weak second tier european nation. People want to come to the United States to get opportunity. We don't want lazy losers who are looking for a hand out.
Further, the bottom 50 percent of earners only pay 3% of the cost of government. the top 25% pay 86% of the freight, do you think they get 86% of the benefits? In other nations the wealthy don't give nearly as much. Here, the wealthy pay and give opportunity to those that pay nothing. The wealthy pay the overwhelming amount of the freight for our police, firefighters, teachers, military etc. If people aren't paying for these services they at least ought to be thankful.
Obama wants to give welfare checks to people that don't pay taxes. How on earth does the Boston Globe believe that he is the right choice?
To the academic socialists, you make significantly higher profits than the oil companies and have gouged us more than them in the past fifteen years. You want socialism because when the market bears at affordabity limits, if education is subsidized you know you can charge more, and you do. You want governenment subsidies so you can get more than you deserve. Every social engineering policy tried has failed miserably and has hurt the people it was meant to help i.e. how affordability was made worse for housing due to socialistic policies like the Community Reinvestment Act.
Our elderly have paid into social programs and Obama will bankrupt and swamp these resources with deadbeats that ought to be out working and earning. Younger workers need to be sled dogs to help pull the weight of an aging population, we don't need lazy losers who feel "entitled" or Obama's base.
You don't build a middle class by letting the government control the resources of our Nation. Think about how resources will be doled out if Obama, Pelosi, Reed, Frank, etc. gets your money, they will give to groups like ACORN. Don't believe me, 20% of the Bailout money was headed to ACORN in the first draft of the bailout. At least private companies have profit and loss responsibilities and have to compete. Governments don't so if we let Obama control our wealth and resources we'll let government control them. Do you think government ever does anything correctly? Government screws up everything so the last thing we need right now is to let them tie up our wealth, which is one of our resources. Second tiered socialistic nations control their nation's wealth and that is why they aren't competitive and why their best and brightest come to the United States.

The simply truth is that there are more Democrats than there are Republicans in this country. In historical terms, this election will serve as the pivot point for Democratic Party dominance from this point on...until, their policies swing too far left for even the most hard-left-leaning Democrats and Socialists. Then the Libertarian Party will emerge as the most likely opposing political party. This is the end of the Republican Party, as we know it. It will dissapear, or move/transform into the Libertarian Party...you heard it here first!

What exactly is the point of this puff piece? To support the truism that anything is possible? To keep McCain supporters in the game for another day? It's not hard to get a quantitative estimate of where things now stand: of 14 independent polls published today, only one has Obama at under 50% of the popular vote; averages for all these polls gives Obama 51% to McCain's 44%, with very small deviation from the mean. Two reliable (and different) statistical meta-analyses comprising all these data project Obama will win 344 and 357 electoral votes, respectively, and McCain's chances of winning the electoral vote tally as 1.9% and 1.3%. Pollster.com conservatively projects Obama will win 311 E.V. At this hour, the people with money down on the outcome (Intrade) make it 364 E.V. for Obama and 174 E.V. for McCain. As an Obama supporter, I know I am going to sleep very well tonight.

There is only one reason I would be happy if Obama wins...so that I can say "I told you so" to everyone I know who voted for him as he fails miserably and repeatedly. Obama was in the senate for 143 days..how is that experience????? He has surrounded himself with people of questionable character during his formative years and atttended a so called church where he and his children were subjected to the rantings of an angry lunatic. It's as if Americans heard the word change and stopped asking questions - the premise of change has stupified this country into an Obamified trance.

And Hades could frreeze over, too.

The difference between McCain and Obama is so striking. McCain needs to retire and Obama is the future. McCain has no new ideas, no concept of what it is like to be an average American, and has no clue as to what America needs.

Obama, on the other hand, is thoughtful and intelligent, uses reason, is forward looking and has the ideas to make America a better country and move into the future.

As we sit here on the Eve of the election, I wanted to send a message out to people who will vote for John McCain because of character. You should know this. While McCain spend five years in a POW camp, his wife a former model, waited for him patiently. Unfortunately, before he came back, she was in a car accident, after which she was never physically the same. Shortly after McCain returned from his 5 years at the Hanoi Hilton, he ended up divorcing his wife. Later, he admitted that he did this out of his own selfishness. Read: His model wife wasn't the same attractive woman he had left behind. From there, he moved onto the likes of Cindy.

The worst indictment about the author of this article is that she came up with a big headline to draw readers but end with sport analogy which has very little to do with the political reality. I am politically independent and really would like to know how McCain can pull it off with a electoral game plan. What are the"must win" states? What states McCain can afford to lose? Yet all the author offer are some recent experiences with Red Sox and some comments from Republican operatives. What do you expect RNC people to say other than something to rally the troops? If the writer thinks the poll is not telling the whole truth, she needs to explain why she thinks so. In stead all we get are sports analogies.

Overall,That is journalism at its worst: sensational title with no substances. The author is advised to take a break or get back to a respected school of journalism to get a better education.

The Wright Ad seems to have an effect on some people. Specially in PA, VA and OH. It may similarly effect the 'Toss-up' states.

Using the RealClearPolitics 'Create your own map', change all toss-up states to Red & you get: O-278, M:260, T:0. Add PA: O-257, M:281, T:0.

M wins with 11 to spare! That is McCain strategy. 'Last 2 days Wright Ad' effect on toss-up states + PA.

Just remember, because of the great method the founders chose to design for the election of a President, the number of votes matters little. You only have to win each state by one vote to win its electoral votes.

It doesn't matter if Barry Obama wins New York by a million votes. He gets nothing extra. Turning out the vote for Obama in NY and California is an exercise in futility.

How can you compare politics and sports??? In sports, if you practice constantly and try very hard (and squire good players) you will probably win. In politics, a yankee player can fight as hard as he wants, play his heart out, but that doesn't mean a red sox fan will support him. In sports, the "candidates" decide who wins by who plays better. In politics, the people decide. The fans don't pick the winner of a sports game!!! Sheesh, how idiotic can you be? PLEASE TAKE THIS DOWN.

Sweet, he could win...or we could have the other socialist.

Really with these people? Someone read Atlas Shrugged for god's sake. These people are ALL SOCIALISTS.

They are parasites, surviving off our labor.

Am I the only one in this liberally-blinded state who sees through the Obama mask? The media has fooled you all. This man is not a god, not even close. He speaks of change, but I am not convinced. Just wait until he turns America into his socialist nation and we are all just puppets, stuck in his racist agenda. McCain may not be perfect, but at least he is honest.
It makes me sick to my stomach knowing that my beloved America will be led by this man.

Wow. Combing through the comments here is like shifting through well-used kitty litter. Sure, there's lots in there, but most of it's crap. It's fascinating, and more than a little troubling, how easy it has been for Sen. Obama to fool you marks.

John P.

You're obviously well knowledged in the campaign, but like the canidates, you say a lot with very few points. The majority is suffering in this country, plain and simple, And if that means we need to let a couple freeloaders slip through the cracks to save the many who will barely be able to afford heating and food, then so be it.

I wonder if either canidate has the vision for eight yrs. I feel that they both are measuring the drapes as will anyone who runs for any office..Will they be ready with their knowledge from being in war..Yes McCain is healthy yes Obama is young to young possibly connected & possibly enlightened by some strange
range fellows. Also McCain rich as **ll sure is that his fault that we save less than 5% of our income. Also in the last 7 yrs we have 4 fold with credit cards?? yeah its sad we're giving up and want free everthing but don't want to pay for ie medical

Obama bought all of the media outlets. He bought all of his votes. And he still might lose! I love it. If he does lose, I look forward to all of the media of all of you people on this posting to CRY, CRY all the way HOME!!

Getting nervous? Huh? Oh, I see McCain is now projected to win 268 electoral votes! OH NO! YOUR MAN IS GOING TO LOSE! OH NO! OH NO!

IF the Acorn/Obama cabal doesn't succeed in diluting too many legal votes, McCain/Palin may pull it off. If not, then the democrats, with house, senate, and white house will be able to run wild, and trip the current recession into a full blown depression with increased taxes and protectionist tarriffs.

Obama was ahead in the Gallup poll 41-28 right before the NH primary. Hillary ended up winning by 3 pts. Matter of fact, the polls in the Democratic primaries overstated Obama's strength by an average of 7 pts. With the Bradley effect and the general underestimation of Republican candidates, McCain can still pull an EC victory.

For those who are complaining about Palin's experience, look at your top ticket. OBAMA HAS ZERO EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE.

Barack will win and all you Barack liberla supporters will be happy and in 4 years you will all be begging to "Just Change" again to a new candidate because of the ideas Barack implements.
He stands for socialism people, do you not understand that. Ask Canada how a socialist health care program is working and you will beg for private healthcare. Ask European counutries about being taxed more now than before, you'll be amazed at how much of a "discount" our taxes are as compared to European countries. And these things are all things that Barack wants to do. Oh, by the way, under the Barack Tax Policy, he says he will tax individuals and business over $250k, which his VP Biden has now claimed is really $150k per household, trust me that number will go down to about $60k per household by the time it is implemented. And for all of you that think he is going to cut your taxes if you make say less than $60k per household, he's not going to cut it, he's just not going to raise your taxes. Listen to his plan or read about it in the USA Today. So "Buyer Beware", your buying it, please don't be one of these people that say "I told you so."

The press is so far in the tank for NoBama that it will be enjoyable to see how their "main man" gets portrayed when he loses. For sure, there will be howls of "Republican cheating" when he comes up short. And then of course, there will be the "R" word thrown about.

YOU GUYS ARE ALL MISSING THE POINT. THERE IS AN ANALOGY: its the ODDS!!! Probability is the unifying theme, it's not a complex analogy, it just is one, he's saying it is not over yet....... and McCain is gonna come back , watch.

For once, I wish all the liberals who keep threatening to give up their citizenship and move would just do it. Republicans don't whine and complain. We deal with it and act like grown-ups. I'm feeling pretty optimistic. Not for MA; McCain is unlikely to win here, but I think people will stand at the voting booths and decide the empty suit is too great a risk and a grown-up is needed to run the country.

Well,
This has been a jaded campaign for Obama. He is a person that has terroist ties regardless of his denial and the U.S. citizens of this country wanting to believe otherwise. He has no politcal expierience but being a community organizer "WOW". Never really had a political office. This man claims to have been one of the ones to vote agaist the war a farse he walked into senate a year later. He voted to take away the middle class earnings to bail out wall street and the S&L's. I am a registered Democrat voting for the Republican Party. The better republican was taken out of the race due to a Kennedy that now regrets what he did.

Can we please leave Buckner out of this? I'm stressed out enough as it is.
The only reasonable sports comparison is the following: In game 5 of this year's ALCS, many fans left the stadium early thinking that the game was over. It was not, and although their departure had no effect on the game, they sure missed a heck of a comeback. Similarly, if a lot of Democrats think that Obama has everything sewn up, they might be foolish enough to stay home and not vote. Nothing should be taken for granted.

You can not compare sports to politics, however if you do Obama's victory will be similar to the October 7, 1916 victory by Georgia Tech over the Cumberland Bulldogs 222-0.

Change is coming.

Considering how much voter suppression is always being perpetrated by the Republicans on the American voting public it will take a landslide in favor of Obama to eek out a narrow Democratic victory. So get out and vote!

McCain can't steal elections like Bush did cause he's to mavericky. Not enough Republican criminals friends on his side, though he has plenty, he's burned to many bridges over 27 years covering his own ass while throwing others under the bus.

You want a sports analogy, if McCain wins it would be like the old grey mare catching Secretariat at the wire.

Posted by Frank November 4, 08 01:33 AM

"If McCain even comes close to Obama, it's election fraud all over again."

See, that's the problem with Democrats. They're not just right, they're sooooo right that anyone who disagrees with them isn't just wrong, they're evil. And of course everyone knows that in a contest against evil there are no holds barred; anything goes, and is completely morally justifiable.

Well I have some news for you Democrats: Your treatment of Sarah Palin was HATEFUL and DISGUSTING. Your treatment of an innocent plumber from Ohio was HATEFUL and DISGUSTING. Your treatment of George W. Bush has been BEYOND HATEFUL and DISGUSTING. You've eaten too much of your own dogfood and have become the very thing you claim to loathe.

Congratulations. You must be so proud.

Hello Americans !

In 4 years, you will be very disappointed by electing Obama. He won't do anything for the country! He is a lawyer and he knows how to convince you that he is the best choice. But in reality, he will seat on his chair and will wait for the second term.
