Huckabee defends criticism of Romney

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 19, 2008 05:21 PM

Mike Huckabee, promoting and defending his new book, said today he was only being candid about the Republican presidential race, not trying to bash his rivals including Mitt Romney.

"It's not about Mitt Romney," Huckabee said on CNN. "This book is not about what's wrong about Mitt Romney or anyone else."

In "Do the Right Thing: Inside the Movement That's Bringing Common Sense Back to America," the former Arkansas governor does criticize Romney, who could be a rival again in 2012 for the GOP nomination.

Huckabee says Romney was "anything but conservative until he changed the light bulbs in his chandelier in time to run for president" and mocks Romney for suggesting during one debate that more investment in high-yield stocks could help resolve economic woes: "Let them eat stocks!"

"That's all the buzz I'm getting," Huckabee said. "And the truth is, this book is not about looking back at the campaign. This book focuses on the future of the Republican Party. It's not about Mitt Romney. If anybody reads this because they say, I want to see what he really dishes out on Mitt Romney -- what I try to do is be candid and honest."

But Huckabee insisted he didn't dislike Romney.

"It wasn't a matter of dislike, it was a matter of he was taking positions on issues that he had never taken before. At the same time, he was bashing people like me who had been consistent in our own views and putting out ads on John McCain, on Rudy Giuliani, on me and everybody else saying they're not consistent."

A spokesman for Romney today dismissed Huckabee's comments in the book as "petty stuff."

"We need to focus on moving the party forward with new ideas," Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom told the Associated Press. "Unfortunately, Mike Huckabee seems more interested in settling scores than bringing people together."

How does Huckabee think he is a consistent conservative? His record in Arkansas is conservative? Gov't Scholarships for Illegal Immigrants? Raising Taxes? Increasing Gov't Spending? Getting a State lawyer to defend his son after the son grabbed a shotgun to kill a dog in cold blood? Pardoning or Commuting the sentences for thousands of criminals?

Romney/Jindal 2012

I just received Mike Huckabee's book today and it's great. It is an honest and insightful look at the 2008 campaign with fantastic wisdom on how to move the GOP and country forward.

I just don't understand all the venom towards Mike Huckabee. Why do people give Romney a pass on his despicable behavior during the primaries and call Huckabee the bad guy for telling the truth about what happened?

Huckabee is a fiscal conservative - he cut taxes 94 times and balanced the budget in Arkansas. Romney on the other hand raised taxes in Massachusetts but disguised them as 'fees'.

Massachusetts was a better state with Romney!

Huckabee is embarrassing to the GOP. See post # 1 for all the reasons, not to mention the relentless coloquialisms that disguise his lack of intellect and cabability.
Huckabee doesn't like Romney because he is a Mormon, and for no other reason. Where I come from we call it bigotry.

Comment to MJ Ashley:

What despicable behavior? Romney has always taken the high road. He's never engaged with Huckabee on anything, but simply pointed out his deplorable record as governor.

It's obvious that Huckabee is insanly jealous of Romney, and a bigot. He is an embarrassment to the GOP and a gift that keeps on giving - to the democrats, that is.

Kudos to Romney for his unfailing graciousness under fire. Double shame on Huckabee for his relentless attacks on Romney.

Can we move on now, Mr. Huckabee? You've already done quite enough damage to the Republican Party.

MJ Ashley asks why Romney got a bye and Huckabee gets all the criticism. I'm left wondering if he/she followed the race during the primaries. Huckabee from day one until the pick of Sara Palin--and even still today has been criticizing Romney.

Huckabee is a hypocrite. Huckabee's 529s were behind smears on all the candidates. Huckabee said days before the VP announcement that Romney was not acceptable because of his shift on abortion. Then, he said Tom Ridge and Giuliani, both currently pro choice, were acceptable. The only conclusion one can make from this type of comment is that Huckabee has a hatred for Romney.
Based upon the campaign Huckabee ran, his support base, and his financers, one can only conclude that there is a prejudice towards Romney’s religion.

This type of thinking cost the Republicans and this country the best man for the presidency. I can only hope these people grow up before the next election and Romney decides to run again.

Hey Darrell you almost had me with your post until I read the bottom, Jeb Bush 2012. Are you kidding me? Anyone named Bush should be banned from running for President!!!!

Many find Mike Huckabee to be deceitful. He says one things, but his actions show otherwise.

It is interesting to see Mike Huckabee continuing his attacks on Romney. I don't think that it serves him well.

By the way Romney increased fee's on such services as hooking up a sewer for builders. The fee had remained the same since the 60's or 50's and 50 years later it cost more to perform a service.

Huckabee is the most mean spirited politician I have seen in a long time. I thought preachers were suppose to be loving and kind. I do believe Huckabee is a bigot when it comes to members of the Mormon faith, It is very obvious. How very sad.

Adding fees is not remotely the same as raising taxes, no matter how you slice it. Fees are paid for directly by people who are receiving services rather than taxes which are paid for by everyone regardless of whether they see any benefit from the money they pay. Who should pay for a majority of road upkeep, the family with 3 cars and a boat or the single working man who rides his bike to work every day?

Huckabee needs to get out of the political ring sooner rather than later. He is only holding on to his little niche that managed to splinter the Republican party in the primaries. Nobody else really wants him to run the country (much less in a time when we need strong fiscal leadership!)

Huckabee needs to get over his Romneyenvy, he acts like a democrat in both policy and behavior toward republicans. Interesting how Huckabee's behavior seems so unlike the chrisianity he espouses.

The last memorable thing the Huckster did was make a despicable joke before a white, gun-toting NRA group about Obama fearing assassination. Palin was no where near the disaster in the VP slot on the Republican ticket that Huckabee would have been.

Huckabee cannot unite the party. Like McCain, his petty obsession with Romney's prior successes shows he is a populist, not a free-market capitalist. I was shocked at his immature activities mocking how Romney ate his KFC chicken. Is this how a President of the USA should be comporting himself? His dispicable anti-Mormon bigotry is really disappointing. By the way, after the Mormons did so much to protect marriage and have paid for it with tremendous persecution from the left, I have not heard a word from Huckabee coming to their defense. Rather, he parades as a "Christian" while letting those he persecutes do the heavy lifting. "Do the Right Thing"? He's got to be kidding.

Huckabee is so bigoted, he can't even help himself. His book is so stupid that the few paragraphs that talk about Romney are the only thing that anyone even reads. Huckabee doesn't realize people can see right through him and his jealously of everything Romney has: intelligence, looks, education . . . a family that weighs less than a 747.

There is no statute of limitations on character assassination. Romney made his bed, now he should lay in it. I just couldn't believe Mccain was standing on the same platform with this Brutus, only weeks after the knifing! We know who Mitt really is now. He went negative in the primaries, leaving himself wide open for criticism--then, now, and in 2012. Huck is the only real man in the country who calls a spade a spade.

Huckabee is the biggest hipocryte in politics. I honestly can't understand why anyone, with any once of understanding, would support the guy.

He's a flash in the pan.

What is Mitt's great economic plan now? More high-yield stock? (chuckle, chuckle). Great plan , everyone would be broke with that advise. Huckabee has the Fairtax, you know, the plan Mitt said would raise prices 23%, without conveniently noting all other taxes would cease to exist. Remember, a half-truth is a complete lie! Really? What's Mitt's plan NOW? Huckabee will still have the FairTax in 2012 because it works. Mitt? Who knows...

Mitt Romney seems to be focused on doing what is right for America while Huckabee seems to be focused on saving his image. Actions speak louder than words.

Huckabee is the left's favorite conservative for a reason- they know he is weak sauce. As much as I love Palin, I think the same might be true of her. I love Romney because the left fears him and hates him.

I didn't hear the Romney camp deny what Huckabee wrote in his book. I know it is hard for people to believe there really is an honest and open politician out there but Huckabee is authentic. What you see is what you get, He says in public what he says in private. That's why you won't catch him making a backroom embarrassing comment like the bitter American's clinging to guns and religion from Obama. I heard Arnold Swartzenneger on FOX yesterday and they asked why McCain lost. I guranatee he didn't give them the same answer he gave his wife at home. Huckabee is real....

Hey Kayla...I know! I can't believe my fingers penned it! Jeb strikes me as more similar to Bush 1, and much less similar to Bush 2 (W that is). Bush 1 was an honorable president . And at least Jeb has some intellect and cabability, something Huckabee and Palin severely lack. He would make a good #2, to Romney of course.

Did Eric Fehrnstrom send out an email to his Romney list? There's a lot positive here about a guy who trashed Massachusetts.

Even Republicans were discerning enough to figure out that Mitt Romney will say anything to get elected. Mitt is all about Mitt, nothing else. He probably really is a conservative, but after running as a moderate in Massachusetts and then conveniently steering hard to the right for the Presidential race, who can be sure?

So the Huck-Duck complains still that the media had written him off as a second or third string candidate that was just a preacher, and so the few questions that he did receive, he complains, were the moral/religious ones. This from the man who after Romney and Rudy were asked if they believed the entire Bible was true interrupted and asked if he could help with that question. Huckabee knew that this question was aimed at the Mormon and that if he got a word in he could present himself as the "Christian leader." Ha! At least when Romney was a spiritual leader he didn't get paid for it.

I don't know what to think about Mitt. He did seem a flip-flopper on some political issues, but do remember that Mitt never did condone abortion or same-sex marriage whether or not he supported laws against them. He has always been honest in his dealings both in business and politics.

I do know what to think of Huckabee. He is mean spirited. He puts down those who have been successful in life. Most of all, I am very disturbed by his supporters openly anti-mormon bigotry. No one can deny that he opened that gate and let the prejudice spill out as long as it helped him politically. How could anyone support this man?

p.s. Mark, the phrase calling a "spade a spade" is considered a racial slur to Black America. You may have innocently used the phrase, but to me it confirms the type of people who support Huckabee.

Lovable...Massachusetts is in a constant state of trash, and is therefore not trashable. :) Don't blame Romney for MA's recurring problems. I say blame the liberal legislature if we're going to be partisan about it. The truth is, MA has more than it share of challenges...so many even the anointed Deval can't solve them. The common denominator, of course, is the liberal legislature.

Huckabee would help out America's deficit by releasing all the prisoners. Imagine how much money we would save if we let them all go. We wouldn't need jails, jailors, etc. He was successful in Arkansas of pardoning 1033 prisoners. One went on to kill and others went back to their criminal ways. All the prisoners needed to do was to say they have been saved.

Huckabee is out of line and his true colors are showing. He has bashed and tried to run everyone's name through the mud. Mitt Romney was and still is the best man for the job. He will win in 4 years and we will have a stronger America.

Just look to the qualifications, experience and true character of the man and you must see Mitt Romney as the best choice...his ability to govern with a minority party in Massachusetts speaks volumes...he has the economic background we need right now and will still need in four years!

This is in respnse to Linda--Post # 25 and any other Huck supporters. The problem with saying he is open and honest is this: The Huckster has and does critcize Romney for "going negative" in his ads--that fact is debatable. I would say he just informed people about Huck's record; if that is "negative", that is Huck's problem because it is his record. But now that the primary AND the general elections are over Huck comes out with a book full of negative comments about Romney. And they are stupid, petty negative comments too. They don't have any substance to them. For someone who is supposed to be a "Christian" "pastor" that does not seem very Christlike.
