Huckabee hits Romney

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 17, 2008 04:00 PM

Mike Huckabee parlayed his surprising run during the Republican presidential primaries into national notoriety, a talk show on Fox News Channel, and a new book that comes out Tuesday.

In the book, Huckabee, who is already being talked about as a possible contender in 2012, he brags about the success of his grassroots campaign -- and also tries to settle some scores.

In "Do the Right Thing: Inside the Movement That's Bringing Common Sense Back to America," The former Arkansas governorhas particular disdain for former rival Mitt Romney, according to an account of the book on Time magazine's website.

And Huckabee seems to relish in contrasting Romney's wealth and upbringing with his own more humble roots.

Huckabee says Romney, another possible 2012 hopeful, was "anything but conservative until he changed the light bulbs in his chandelier in time to run for president" and says it was a "sign of total disrespect" that the former Massachusetts governor did not call to congratulate him for pulling off an upset win in the Iowa caucuses.

Time says that Huckabee also mocks Romney for suggesting during one debate that more investment in high-yield stocks could help resolve economic woes: "Let them eat stocks!"

UPDATE: A spokesman for Romney today dismissed Huckabee's comments in the book as "petty stuff."

"We need to focus on moving the party forward with new ideas," Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom told the Associated Press. "Unfortunately, Mike Huckabee seems more interested in settling scores than bringing people together."

Huckabee said today he was simply writing with the same candor he showed during the campaign.

"There was obvious tension, and again, it wasn't just me, but with other candidates, and so I addressed where that came from," Huckabee told reporters. "One of the things people came to believe that they would get from me was candor."

Huckabee has a way with words - I can't wait to read the book! I pre-ordered it over a month ago and am just waiting for it to be delivered.

I still remember the debate where the rest of the Republicans laughed at Huckabee for saying there was a problem with the economy. Huckabee must have been listening to those average Americans that make up his grassroots movement. Oh yeah, that's right - he quoted many of his supporters on the campaign trail. Guess we're more in touch with the economy than some of the other candidates financial advisers.

Huckabee is a nobody. He's just trying to get what little thunder he can to get some more cashflow. He knows Romney is 2012 and wants his cut.

Huckabee hits Romney, so what else is new?

Father Huck exists just to molest Mitt Romney. If his hatchet-man utility to John McCain in the primary--where Mike stuck around long after he was mathematically eliminated from contention just to dilute Romney--wasn't enough evidence, if that anti-Romney-for-VP group that popped up during McCain's vetting process that just so happened to be entirely comprised of former Huck staffers wasn't enough evidence, maybe this sort of pettiness in print will suffice.

Even though he does his best to crucify Romney far more than the others, at least his incapacity to refrain from saying bad things about everyone else who ran against him or didn't endorse his strictly regionally successful bid for the nomination exposes him as suprasmalltime and ultrapetty. He hasn't got the ability to bury the hatchet, even though he's the only one swinging it! LOL, and this is supposed to be the candidate to best-represent the Christian right?! I've yet to see him behave like a proper christian. But since I was brought up in the episcopal church and in episcopal schools, I'm sure Father Huck would find a way to liken me to an evildoing undeserving christian too.

Anyway, hey if I'm a democrat, I love Mike Huckabee since he'll be a reliably divisive, dilutive figure in 4 years, paving the way for an easy Obama re-election. He's like our very own built-in Ross Perot, only a total idiot.

Huckabee's vendetta is personal and based on religion. He is a former Baptist minister who would rather see the Democrats control the White House forever than have a Mormon win it for his own party. Seldom in politics have we seen such a pointless, ideological obsession about a qualified, intelligent and capable candidate, who never let his religion define his candidacy other than one time when he decided to finally address it after being questioned constantly.

As for the book, I don't think I could stand to read it if it's full of his folksy quips. Through the whole campaign he rarely answered a question, offering instead something like "there's an old saying in the Airforce: when you're getting flak you know you're over the target..." as a substitute for a thoughtful response.

If Obama further messes things up, I won't forget to blame Huckabee and McCain, too, of course. Since Romney was the best candidate, both Huckabee and McCain had it in for Romney.

It was one of the worse mistakes ever by Republicans to not have nominated Romney. He would've been the best candidate against Obama. He would've matched him every way and then some.

Huckabee is a bigot who ran an obnoxious campaign that sought to divide people based on religion. Everyone knows it. His attacks on Romney and other Republicans are consistent with his mean, petty style. Romney is too classy to respond in kind. He's more focused on rebuilding the party and getting people to work together.

If and when the library gets Huckabee's book, I think I will check it out. I like the man, but his brand of conservatism just seems like fluff to me. He had the "Cheers" actor - Kelsey Grammer- on his show this past weekend, as if we should be looking to guys like that for renewed hope for the conservative movement. I prefer a more staunch conservative like Tom Tancredo or Pat Buchannon.

Will Mike Huckabigot ever go away? This guy is a total embarassment to the GOP and Christians throughout the country. Can you imagine how good it would have been to have a knowlegable candidate about our country's economy instead of John McCain? Romney could have beat Obama had it not been for Gov. H messing up the election. Give me a break!

Mike Suckabee is a wanna be. Mitt Romney has something Huckabee will never have, and that's class. Huckabee got his 15 minutes of fame, so he should go back to eating his squirrels. Go Mitt 2012!!

It is sad to see someone as self righteous as Mike Huckabee. He preaches his own religion yet can't seem to live it--very pathetic indeed. He and John McCain tried everyway to take down the best candidate (Mitt Romeny) and found themselves sinking the party. Mitt Romney 2012!

If it weren't for Huckabee, Romney would probably be president-elect right now.

Huckabee is a comedian, he is the faux conservative that he criticizes Romney and Thompson of being. He raised taxes in a red state, gave illegals in-state college tuition, pardoned thousands of criminals and dozens of murderers, his son brutally murdered a dog, he subtly bashed Romney's Mormonism every chance he got. And now in his book he's praising McCain, but dissing on Romney? Romney, a REAL conservative, while he praises McCain (the big RINO fall guy the media selected) and says nothing about Obama? No, Huckabee, shut your mouth, nobody will read your book and your show will be cancelled soon.

Am I the only one who cannot watch Fox News anymore b/c they've given Mike Huckabee a show? It's really stupid. He's leading the way into the abyss for the Republican party, and Fox is amplifying his message. Fools. Pure idiocy. Furthermore, I get kicked out of Sean Hannity's stupid website forum and banned for life for pointing out this Huckabee-led divide between the culturalist and cerebral wings of the party is only going to hinder us again in 2010 and 2012. I guess these two pieces of evidence reveal that Fox News has been reduced to pandering to extreme Christian Right culture warfare households anymore.

Anyway, the point is that Huckabee was only a regionally successful primary candidate and yeah he played the hatchetman (as did Fred Thompson (who stuck around to dilute Romney in Florida), though he did it out of friendship to McCain, whereas Huckabee was very unChristian in doing it out of spite for Mitt Romney the mormon heathen, lol) to syphon awway cultural conservative votes that easily would've broken for Mitt over John if they actual valid candidates were the only ones allowed to still be in the race.

Mike Huckabee is like our own built-in, small, little, petty, angry Ross Perot out there operating a pesonal vendetta based instead on bigotry as well as the sinful version of pride. I can't wait for his book to flop, show to tank, and he's reduced back to combing the pews for cash he can intercept from God, or maybe getting elected to some other office where he can re-register a third time for wedding gifts, and maybe he won't have to pluck his son out of trouble for packing heat and hanging dogs infront of kids on summer camp again either. He's really a disgusting human being, and one that is supposed to be a man of the cloth? No wonder.

I wish they would all step aside and let a true conservative take front and center, that being Alan Keyes. No one wants to debate this guy. He's smarter than all of them put together and never has to "back up" since he speaks the same TRUTH each and every time.

I agree with commenters above that Mike Huckabee represents a toxic Culturalist perversion of the social conservative wing. It's hard not to offend social conervatives or southerners, I suppose, who have a cultural identity with Mike Huckabee, and so maybe their witnessing his total lack of class and his unchristianlike behavior in not doing the right thing every chance he gets to talk about Mitt Romney, who himself hasn't said a bad word about Mike Huckabee since he got out of the race, and never did on any personal level--only record.

LIke, if I'm a space alien who just crash landed on Earth and was stuck here like ALF, and I turn on the TV and I see a Baptist preacher running for President who is using ever opportunity to deridingly thrash another candidate and then I see that other candidate never respond in kind and always take the high road, and show class and dignity iinstead, well, I'm sorry but I'd be more compelled to attend a Mormon church than I would a Baptist if all they can do is hypocritcally wage wars against other people with strong morality.

Yuckabee, the rebublican primary is over, would you please also be over. Romney's class will never be over and will always be over your transparent littleness.

If the Republicans don't put ROMNEY and RIDGE at the top of the ticket in 2012, they will lose again. Period. Forget Huckabee, Gingrich, or the Queen of Alaska.
The GOP needs to reach out to a larger base than just the "deep south". You gotta play offense, not defense. You need blue states in the north-central part of the US. I believe those two gentlemen give you instant cred in that regard.

Huckabee is really a nobody who fooled a few voters. I am a Southern Baptist and feel that Huckabee as a Pastor is akin to the one that Obama had for 20 years. His anger and envy is going to destroy him unless he offers an appology to Romney and seeks forgiveness for his atttitude toward Romney.

This is what Huckabee is spending his time doing after causing the GOP to lose the election? Take a look at what Mitt Romney is doing. He is offering REAL solutions to our economic problems (especially this potentially disastrous auto bailout.) I'm going to have to agree with Darrel (as he previously posted) and insist on ROMNEY/GINGRICH in 2012. These are two men with brains who really want to and can change the way America works for the better.

>>I'm going to have to agree with Darrel (as he previously posted) and insist on ROMNEY/GINGRICH in 2012.

You catch Newt's gay rant? His words:
"Look, I think there is a gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us, is prepared to use violence, to use harassment. I think it is prepared to use the government if it can get control of it. I think that it is a very dangerous threat to anybody who believes in traditional religion. And I think if you believe in historic Christianity, you have to confront the fact. And, frank -- for that matter, if you believe in the historic version of Islam or the historic version of Judaism, you have to confront the reality that these secular extremists are determined to impose on you acceptance of a series of values that are antithetical, they're the opposite, of what you're taught in Sunday school. "

Sheesh. What a homophob. Gay and secular fascism? Good grief.

Romney made his own money. Plus the guy graduated from Harvard with a law degree and a MBA when he was married and had kids near the top of his class. I'm a Southerner but if we nominate Huckabee then Obama will be there for 8 years.
