Obama addresses global warming summit

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 18, 2008 05:45 PM

Through the magic of video, President-elect Barack Obama will encourage governors and others today to tackle global warming -- an issue he highlighted during the campaign.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of California is hosting a two-day summit, drawing several fellow governors plus more than 600 environmental officials and activists from around the world.

Obama is pledging to make America more energy independent and to also slash carbon emissions by focusing on alternative sources such as wind and solar. He is also vowing to work more cooperatively with other nations on climate change.

"Few challenges facing America -- and the world – are more urgent than combating climate change," he says in the video. "The science is beyond dispute and the facts are clear. Sea levels are rising. Coastlines are shrinking. We’ve seen record drought, spreading famine, and storms that are growing stronger with each passing hurricane season. Climate change and our dependence on foreign oil, if left unaddressed, will continue to weaken our economy and threaten our national security.

Obama continues that "too often, Washington has failed to show the same kind of leadership. That will change when I take office. My presidency will mark a new chapter in America’s leadership on climate change that will strengthen our security and create millions of new jobs in the process.

"That will start with a federal cap and trade system," he says. "We will establish strong annual targets that set us on a course to reduce emissions to their 1990 levels by 2020 and reduce them an additional 80 percent by 2050. Further, we will invest $15 billion each year to catalyze private sector efforts to build a clean energy future. We will invest in solar power, wind power, and next generation biofuels. We will tap nuclear power, while making sure it’s safe. And we will develop clean coal technologies.

"This investment will not only help us reduce our dependence on foreign oil, making the United States more secure. And it will not only help us bring about a clean energy future, saving our planet. It will also help us transform our industries and steer our country out of this economic crisis by generating five million new green jobs that pay well and can’t be outsourced."

UPDATE: Schwarzenegger noted that California has enacted many of the proposals and completed many of the partnerships that Obama is supporting.

“This administration will adopt, as Barack Obama has just said, adopt our regulations and our laws, and this is really fantastic, because we want to lead the way," the governor said at the conference. "And I can promise him, and I want to thank him, first of all, for this great video that he has sent, and also let him know that we in California here are ready to go and do everything that it takes in order to help his administration to follow through with his vision, with his environmental vision.”

The world's environmental ministers plan to meet in Poland in two weeks. "While I won’t be president at the time of your meeting and while the United States has only one president at a time, I’ve asked Members of Congress who are attending the conference as observers to report back to me on what they learn there," Obama says.

The United Nations reported on Monday that carbon emissions from industrialized countries stabilized in 2006 after six years of growth. The report, however, did not cover fast-growing nations, including China and India, that are an increasingly significant source of greenhouse gases.

Nobama always makes it sound so good. Like he's the only one who thinks of these ideas. When I see all these green jobs that pay well, then I'll listen.

Does anyone realize the cost of renewable energy? In some cases, renewable energy makes sense, but in many cases, the costs are much higher. Creating "green" jobs that cost people more money for energy does not necessarily help. The people pushing for this stuff should at least be honest with the public and present the costs of the various forms of renewable energy. These should be the real costs, and not propaganda created to fool people about the true cost. After the costs are presented to the people, let them vote on it. I have a feeling that if the costs were honestly portrayed, people would vote for non-renewable coal, followed by nuclear and possibly wind power.

Let's give credit where's it's due, to President Bush, for being just about the only leader in the western world to do the right thing and stonewall the efforts of the global warming hysterics. If President Bush had given in to the enormous pressure on him to sign the Kyoto Agreement the world would be a much much worse place. Just another reason he will be highly regarded in years to come.

How much greenhouse gas and global warming will be produced by the four million people who travel to the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama, a crowd that would be three or four times larger than previous big events on the Mall. Would not a real leader would ask those millions of people to stay at home for the good of the world?

Good Lord....wind and solar ? The only wind and hot air around is coming from the like of Algore and crowd. Why do you think solar and wind have not gone further....more transmission lines (cost huge amounts of $)and no one wants them in their backyard....solar...needs large amounts of chemicals to work and incredible amounts of water..energy independence ? SHALE oil sounds good (look at Canada) Who the hell can afford to by an electric roller skate that will need servicing ? The corner garage will laugh when they break down.

We have yet to show that we can impact temperatures, let alone climate. We need to protect and care for our environment however several studies show that we are looking at climate cycles, not the impending doom of our planet.

Well, the real question here is, can President - elect Obama, through the magic of video, find a way to explain to us why global warming stopped in 1998? CO2 keeps rising. We're seeing cold records and early snow and ice recrords being being broken on every continent on earth these past few years, and this winter, after a record breaking cold summer in Alaska, is off to an exceptionally early and below average cold start here in the US?
Seems the solar scientists predicted this quite accurately. Is it not becoming obvious that the GW models aren't working as well as scientists are?

Europe has been paying taxes for carbon offsets, yet, the monies collected have not been used to offset the so called global warming. In other words, European businesses hav been lied to and now stinky BO (democrats/progressives/soros/gore) is trying to feed the US the same bull. Of course global warming is President Bush's fault. I will be happy when BO and the democratic party will be responsible enough to stop blaming President Bush for everything.

If this new President signs a "cap and trade" bill he will effectively be stealing money from businesses. The amount of money that get stolen will be above felony levels, let alone misdemeanors.
So if this actually goes through Obama and his minions (which include John McCain) will be committing a high crime which should lead to immediate impeachment hearings.

We have never had an honest discussion of this issue. Anyone who has a counter point of view is quickly silenced or dismissed. Before we change ourselves into a third rate power in the name of Global Warming we need to look at how the rest of the world sees this. A recent survey in England sugest over 60% do not believe G.W. is real. China,India and most of africa and South America don't care and will do whatever they want to.

Great - the lawyer who is a socialist and does not know anything about economics is now a scientist too. He is going to multitask by bankrupting the Government, the electric utilities and the coal industry all at the same time.

There is no such thing a man-made global warming. This is specious science based on assumptions and weather models that cannot get it right for next week much less next decade. Al Gore is a retard and Obama's fumbling here will cause pain an suffering on a massive level for the poor when they cannot afford heat and electricty or to drive anywhere. The biggest question is - is Obama stupid or does he know and not care?

Well, I must be just plain stupid. Silly me, I thought having a financial system not in crisis, a manufacturing base so we aren't reliant on slave labor in hostile countries for all our products and a reliable road infrastructure so we can transport our food and people safely were three bigger issues facing the US than "investing" (taxing the consumers like you and me) for a carbon cap and trade ponzi scheme. Yep, damn stupid I am........

Ummm, specifically WHICH coasts have shrunk? I am unaware of reading a single news article about a single family having to move due to their coastline shrinking due to rising seawater due to global warming. OK, how about showing one family on one coastline that has had to move specifically for that reason. After all, as Obama said, "The science is beyond dispute and the facts are clear. Sea levels are rising. Coastlines are shrinking...." So, how about showing a fact of a family anywhere in the world that had to move due to coastlines SHRINKING, not due to land settling, or waves washing away a piece of shoreline, or some other unrelated event.

The goal is a world of a common society, standards, markets, currencies and borders in a world defined as global commons. Officially starting in Sept . 2000 at the UN Millenium Summit. With world leaders including Bill Clinton signing &calling for UN global jurisdiction over the earth as a "GLOBAL COMMONS" encompassing all of the air, water, land .and airways in order to tax the use of natural resources. The Cap and Trade, anti-capitalism, risky scheme will cost American jobs. Many companies will merely move their operations offshore, to China and India. Those that stay behind will have to lay off workers to support the carbon taxes they will be mandated to pay, which will go back to the government to pay for welfare and unemployment benefits for the same people who had jobs before cap and trade.

American businesses have already, and will continue to reduce their emissions on their own, because it is good business. We don't need more government intervention and additional taxes.

Putting additional burdens on American businesses, while the Chinese and Indians thumb their noses at us makes no sense at all. In fact, it is insane.

"Man-made Global Warming" is a farce, and the new "climate change" label proves it. Temperatures are not warming, but by neutralizing the terminology any and every weather event can be blamed on you and me. Hogwash!

Since hurrican Katrina, the Gore-ites have predicted an increase in number and intensity in regard to hurricane activity. Just the opposite has happened. The Global Ice-caps are fuller, and by all recent measurements, we are in a period of Global Cooling.
Cap and trade is a recipe for economic destruction, and when your power and gas bills triple to combat a fictitious enemy you will have only Obama and the Democrats to blame.

With the so called "global warming" now showing to be a scam we see trends to try to change the name to something else in an effort to prop up the continuance of the scam. Global Warming, Global Climate Change, next will come Global Pollution. In the end though this will be show for the con scam it is. I can only hope that those behind it are publicly tried for for their crimes and imprisoned for the rest of their natural lives. That is of course if this doesn't result in the deaths of innocent victims. Then they should be tried for crimes against humanity and publicly executed.

The one bright spot is that the AGW religion will make this Teflon Marxist a one term president and cost congress control in two years. CO2 is plant food and cooling cycles cost lives, not warming cycles. If we are headed for cooling as the trends suggest then Washington and the gullible press better get off their ass and acknowledge. It is funny how the Scandanavians have decided that no more than 20% of their grid shall be generated by wind. Electricity is not easily stored and for that reason, we have grids that transfer the power to the users who need it at different points in time. If the wind does not blow and the whole grid was generated by the wind, there is would not be enough electricity to power the entire grid. What are the wind guru's suggesting we do? Become a third world country and go without power until the wind blows?

This is funny. Global warming is the "great distraction" for the left to use when they are frozen with inaction on the economy and our debt. Just as politicians on both sides use abortion and gay marriage as great distractions our debt clock ticks every day with americans fixated on these distractions. I can't wait until China, Japan and others call our debt. Wow, I bet abortion, global warming and gay marriage won't be top of mind. Our great politicians now created an environment where we pay $400+ billion per year in INTEREST only. Compare that to Education on a national level of say $40 billion. The next highest outlay next to our interest on our debt is the military at around $400 billion. Imagine the things we can do without having to pay on that debt. Don't forget about State debt, local municipality debt etc. That isn't included. And finally, this isn't a Dem or Rep item THEY ARE ALL GUILTY.

Actually, the warmest year was 1938 according to NOAA. The warmest 10 years have occurred in 5 different decades. When one looks at the people who are climate scientists that deny the IPCC global warming theory, they all state that in their area of expertise, the IPCC has it wrong. They don't comment the other sections outside their specialty that claim global warming, but taken together, they all show that Al Gore and the IPCC are wrong.

Dr. Edward Wegman--former chairman of the Committee on Applied and Theoretical Statistics of the National Academy of Sciences--demolishes the famous "hockey stick" graph that launched the global warming panic.

Dr. David Bromwich--president of the International Commission on Polar Meteorology--says "it's hard to see a global warming signal from the mainland of Antarctica right now."

Prof. Paul Reiter--Chief of Insects and Infectious Diseases at the famed Pasteur Institute--says "no major scientist with any long record in this field" accepts Al Gore's claim that global warming spreads mosquito-borne diseases.

Prof. Hendrik Tennekes--director of research, Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute--states "there exists no sound theoretical framework for climate predictability studies" used for global warming forecasts.

Dr. Christopher Landsea--past chairman of the American Meteorological Society's Committee on Tropical Meteorology and Tropical Cyclones--says "there are no known scientific studies that show a conclusive physical link between global warming and observed hurricane frequency and intensity."

Dr. Antonino Zichichi--one of the world's foremost physicists, former president of the European Physical Society, who discovered nuclear antimatter--calls global warming models "incoherent and invalid."

Dr. Zbigniew Jaworowski--world-renowned expert on the ancient ice cores used in climate research--says the U.N. "based its global-warming hypothesis on arbitrary assumptions and these assumptions, it is now clear, are false."

Prof. Tom V. Segalstad--head of the Geological Museum, University of Oslo--says "most leading geologists" know the U.N.'s views "of Earth processes are implausible."

Dr. Syun-Ichi Akasofu--founding director of the International Arctic Research Center, twice named one of the "1,000 Most Cited Scientists," says much "Arctic warming during the last half of the last century is due to natural change."

Dr. Claude Allegre--member, U.S. National Academy of Sciences and French Academy of Science, he was among the first to sound the alarm on the dangers of global warming. His view now: "The cause of this climate change is unknown."

Dr. Richard Lindzen--Professor of Meteorology at M.I.T., member, the National Research Council Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate, says global warming alarmists "are trumpeting catastrophes that couldn't happen even if the models were right."

Dr. Habibullo Abdussamatov--head of the space research laboratory of the Russian Academy of Science's Pulkovo Observatory and of the International Space Station's Astrometria project says "the common view that man's industrial activity is a deciding factor in global warming has emerged from a misinterpretation of cause and effect relations."

Dr. Richard Tol--Principal researcher at the Institute for Environmental Studies at Vrije Universiteit, and Adjunct Professor at the Center for Integrated Study of the Human Dimensions of Global Change, at Carnegie Mellon University, calls the most influential global warming report of all time "preposterous . . . alarmist and incompetent."

Dr. Sami Solanki--director and scientific member at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Germany, who argues that changes in the Sun's state, not human activity, may be the principal cause of global warming: "The sun has been at its strongest over the past 60 years and may now be affecting global temperatures."

Prof. Freeman Dyson--one of the world's most eminent physicists says the models used to justify global warming alarmism are "full of fudge factors" and "do not begin to describe the real world."

Dr. Eigils Friis-Christensen--director of the Danish National Space Centre, vice-president of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy, who argues that changes in the Sun's behavior could account for most of the warming attributed by the UN to man-made CO2.

And as a scientist, I must also ask: Where are you, oh brethren of climatalogical physics and chemistry? Have you all decided to knuckle under to the New Inquisition? Do any of YOU have any integrity left or are grants all that matter any more? The level of ignorance in this society is astonishing. (A little factoid for the scientifically challenged: Water vapor in the atmosphere has 24,000 times the impact on global warming as does CO2. Ya know, the stuff formed by evaporation due to the energy absorbed from the Sun. That big fusion reactor thingy that warms the planet. Every day. All day.)

At any given time, ozone molecules are constantly formed and destroyed in the stratosphere. The total amount, however, remains relatively stable. The concentration of the ozone layer can be thought of as a stream's depth at a particular location. Although water is constantly flowing in and out, the depth remains constant.
So it sounds like our Government fixed all the Ozone Depletion mumbo jumbo!

So now it's a global warming tactic they are using.

What will be next... The earth is over populated & now we have an over abundance of methane gas production. So our Government is asking us to hold it in!

I agree with many of the posters here that global warming is a hoax. And
the president-elect who says: "The science is beyond dispute"
really frightens me.

Those millions of jobs he is talking about??? Who do you think is going
to pay for them? Certainly not the private sector.

It's clear to me that we have a very liberal, uninformed and socialist president-elect. Suddenly the future is looking pretty dim!

"Few challenges facing America -- and the world – are more urgent than combating climate change," he (Obama) says in the video.
Hey, Obama! Heard this before. Remember when it was a global crisis in 1977 over the coming ice age? Remember when it was a global crisis over planet wide food shortages in the 1970's? Remember when it was a global crisis the oil was going to run out in the 1990's? Remember when it was a global crisis about global warming (aslso) in the 1990's? Remember in 1999 when it was a global crisis when Y2K was a global crisis. Remember when it was a global crisis in 2002 when Iraq was a threat to world peace? Remember when it was a global crisis in 2007 when bird flu was going to kill millions?
Please leave us alone and stop bleating like some chicken little about global crisises. We're getting tired of it.
The planet stopped warming in 1998. It's been getting cooler since then. Sunspot activity is now zero and, as a result, planet temperatures have been dropping and all this NOTHING to do with your ridiculous claims from still yet
"crisis."
It's enough if you people would read the Constitution, get a life ,and off your self important high horses and get down to working on real probems such as:
1) the governemnt is a bloated mass of bureaucracy and politicans which is causing the tax payer too much of his/her hard earned income
2) how to get the bureaucrats out of our every day lives and stop trying to bleed us dry
3) get rid of agencies like the IRS, Federal Resevre system, etc. which have been responsible for our economic problems since 1913.
4) I could go on but what's the point?

minimizback to the Constituion again.

Global warming has been pushed upon the public by media and some publicity starved scientist aided by media darlings. Very little by way of unbiased research and media coverage has been presented to prove or disprove this matter. It wasn't 20 years ago that scientist thought we were entering a slow eveolving ice age. Go figure! People should be very suspecious about anyone in government pushing one theory. Remember...the bailout had to be done within one day. Now what do we have. Politicians!@#$%^

It is sad that so many Americans are uninformed. They have no idea that this has been proven to be a hoax by a majority of scientists. The uninformed are feeling with their hearts and not thinking with their minds. They don't bother to think things through and understand what they are so passionate about. They will have to learn the hard way. Just as it took Americans several hundred years to realize that slavery was wrong, it will also take at least a few decades for them to get over this media made hoax. We will all be dead by then.
I have read all 69 comments made here and only the first one supports what Osama lied about. It appears that his 3 million man e-mail army is already at work. They put out this garbage and have supporters comment on them. Get used to this type of propaganda. Just as the global warming hoax has infiltrated the uninformed public, so will the rest of the liberal lies and hoaxes. Obamunism is in full force. We need to stop it. One way to do this is stay informed. It appears that 68 of you have actually done your research. 1 has not bothered to look at the scientific facts. 1 has decided to agree with the few scientists that are taking government grants to some how prove this hoax to be true. Trust me. I know that this goes on. My very liberal, very good friend is a scientist for the government. He does research on trees and has told me that it is all about the money. He is paid to create facts that are not really factual.

This is just a way for Al Gore and his friends to get their hands in our pockets and take total control of our lives. Goodbye freedom and the pursuit of happinies. This will raise taxes kill jobs and have little or no effect on the climate. We do not control the climate. Hell we cant even control our own kids.( Now that they are brainwashed with liberal ideas at our schools). These people do not create wealth they steal it from others. What about the wild fires and valcanos spewing stuff into the enviorment? Logging would help with the fires but the tree huggers wont let us do that either. I am all for conservation and limiting pollution but lets face it we have billions of people in the world who need to eat, work, and try to pursue happiness.
And you got these aholes flying around the globe in their jets telling us that we need to sacrafice. The last time I looked they all live pretty good and have never had a real job. Junior always has his mouth open yapping but he has absolutely nothing to say. Man-made global warming is a hoax designed to extort yet more money from the American people; Gore has made about 9 million since the inception of this fraud. I care not one whit about MGW however, if one is truly concerned about CO2 emissions, perhaps the global warming crazies, including Gore, Obama, and Schwarzenegger should just shut up and stop breathing. This one simple act would help control the gas and would vastly improve the world.

Global Warming is the TAXATION "goose that laid the golden egg" for governments of developed countries. The uniform and exquisite solution they all love. The perfect guilt tax to be forced on the masses who will be coached and coerced to pay ever increasing taxes out of patriotism and fear of damaging, what... nature? Perfect in the planning because we cannot, for one minute, lay blame at the foot of our endlessly expanding and needy governments and administrations. Somebody said "wake up." This is, finally, is cause for re-reading our constitution and reaffirming our power as a free nation and assuring that we keep it that way. Washington is out of control - this is not about science.

Global Warming is a total myth and our government, instead of focussing on the most urgent issues like the economy, oil indepedence, and national security, are chasing after this rainbow with our tax dollars in tow! The enviro-nazis and the hucksters like Al Gore (only because there is big money to made!) have been harping on this rubbish for years to no avail because people in power previously were too smart to give then any creditability. Stuart, one correction. Global warming is a hypothesis, not a theory. Theories are hypotheses with a large bank of experimental evidence, something global warming does not have. In fact, every experiment designed to test the hypothesis of man-made global warming has come out negative, ie. man-made global warming is not true..

I am getting concerned about the ease at which the lies fly out of Barrys mouth. Not only that, the idea that congress wants to bail out the auto. industry. They want to regulate the kind of cars being made. This all adds up to a "enviro-disaster". They will never learn they can not control the market, the absence of fuel efficient cars is not Detroit's problem. The problem is labor costs. It's that simple. Now back to Global warming. It is a scam, plain and simple. A new way to tax. The country will be destroyed if it falls for this rubbish!

"The science is beyond dispute and the facts are clear" quote is one that is repeated over and over again by politicians and others who have an agenda. Control and dependency is the agenda. I have not heard or read one reputable scientist repeat those words. There is only silence or refutation.

The climate is always changing either heating up or cooling, depending on factors that are so much greater than whatever effect humans as have been pointed out in the comments above. There have been tremendous climatic changes over the past billion or so years, the various Ice Ages, the tropical warmth experienced during the Jurassic era. All of these without the influence of human civilization.

The planet will exist beyond the life span of the humans species, it is life as we know it that is what the concern is. To say that we control the climate without regard to sunspots, volcanic activity, the modulation of the magnetic fields, is the most arognt statement ever made and setting us up for failure.

Hilarious.

Every single one of Obama's alleged "consequences of Global Warming" is patently and verifiably false. And Schwarzenegger's assurances that California will take action are puzzlingly incorrect. In fact Alternative Energy and Fuel initiatives were SOUNDLY defeated just 15 days ago.

But this is the way of the AGW movement isn't it. Regardless of the facts, you just go on bleating the mantra, and hope all the other sheep start bleating it too.

That said, the mentality of the sheep is making life great for this wolf. Californians, and Americans in general, have shown recently that they are willing to throw their last borrowed dime at the whims of the masses, out of fear of being left out. This wolf didn't mortgage his future on an overpriced house, glossing over the fine print, just to be part of the herd. Nor will this wolf dump his hard earned money into carbon credits and Priuses. Not surprisingly this wolf is living large during the alleged financial collapse, snatching up bargain houses and sports cars, from sheep who don't have another thread of wool to sell.

So hey, if ignoring the truth is the game then so be it. I used to be a total Global Warming denier. I've since decided that I can't afford NOT to support it!!! Especially given all the great things coming my way as a result of others believing it. Suckers!!!

The politicians will destroy the economy with their lust for control. You control CO2 emissions you control everything.
By the way, I wish the people of California would do to Arnold what they did to Gray Davis. That once great and beautiful state is going to Hades in a handbasket as Arnold convenes conferences on a trace gas that is necessary for life.

Last month, I had breakfast with a friend and we were discussing global warming. Here's how it went.

He said that global temperatures are rising. So I asked how he knew that and he replied, “Thousands of scientists say so.” I asked who they were and he said he heard about them on Air America. I then told him about the Chairman of the IPCC, Rajendra Pachauri, and Secretary General of the WMO (World Meterological Organization), Michel Jarraud, both of whom have acknowledged there has been no warming so far this century, possibly since 1995. That did not change his

mind. “Temperatures are rising,” he said. I then pointed out that the four major satellite temperature tracking systems (NASA/GISS, UAH, RSS, HADCRU) recorded that temperatures have actually dropped about a half degree since 2007. Right over his head. “Temperatures are rising and if we don’t cut back on CO2 emissions, it will be disaster.” I then asked him if the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) agreed with Pacharui, Jarraud and the tracking systems, would that change his mind. “No it would not. There’s no point in you trying to change my mind.” Those were his exact words! Finally, I asked him if the scientists he heard about on Air America should contact the IPCC, WMO, NASA and NAS to inform them they are wrong. “Yes, they should.” Again, his exact words. This is classic cognitive dissonance, the willful and complete disregard for truth in light of the most compeling evidence. I suspect Obama would respond no differently.

This global warming hysteria is the new religion. People better wake up and realize what we're dealing with here. Have you talked to a "believer". It's like talking to a wall. Their belief in the doomsday scenario and the great goal in "saving the planet from CO2" is a severe form of brainwashing. CO2 is NOT pollution! Obama must be stopped. Putting thousands and thousands of massive wind turbines across the entire countryside WILL DO NOTHING but make alot of people very rich.

Please give Mr. Obama an introductory course in geology! The face of the planet is shaped by climate change…. Ever heard of an Ice Age? That’s real climate change and it’s happened dozens of times during the history of the earth. Climate change is the only thing constant about the climate. C02 does not drive climate! The amount of money wasted on this scheme is criminal.
