Obama urges backers to aid fire victims

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 17, 2008 03:20 PM

Barack Obama is turning his formidable Internet army toward the first major US natural disaster since becoming president-elect, urging his supporters today to help victims of the California wildfires.

On Sunday, Obama called Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Mayor Villaraigosa to express concern and get an update.

Today, his website, playing off his campaign slogan of "Yes We Can," says "Together We Can" about helping the fire victims:

"Over the past few days, wildfires in Southern California have destroyed nearly 900 homes and burned over 37,000 acres of land, forcing many more families to evacuate their communities," the site says. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by the fires. The Red Cross and Salvation Army are coordinating relief for the victims, and volunteers on the ground are being organized to help with long-term recovery efforts in the days and months to come. If you live in or near Southern California you can volunteer now, and no matter where you live you can help by donating to the relief efforts."

Sometimes even bad people do good things.

Obamabots thought they would be receiving the charity, not giving it. Wait until he institutes a draft.

I'm so proud this country elected this man!
I'm going to send some clothes out to Cali....Those people lost everything they owned....I'm sure the insurance companies are really going to pull through for them now considering how badly they have been effected by Credit Default Swaps. Poor insurance companies.

To NoNoNobama......Sorry, but we don't take you seriously. I would really hate to be your neighbor.

The "Media Messiah" doing what he does best: appearing to his followers to be doing something important when he's not actually doing a thing. Although stay tuned, with his Wealth Distribution thing, he might be planning a bailout for the Hollywood millionaires living in this area that supported his campaign.

Bravo Obama!
The people who lost everything in that fire were not only millionaires, there were poor people too.

Bottom line, people's homes burned down. Red homes, blue homes, poor homes, rich homes, mansions, trailers, renters, owners, squatters, and tents. Who cares who asks for help or how one does it. People need to reach out.

it is nice to see a president urging the people to help. That is more than we can say for the president of the last 8 years. On a side note, I just wander are you McCain supporters going to get over your guy losing. You have no one to blame but McCain and Palin for screwing up their campaign.

Funny how the republicans rant and rave about how they lost to Obama in a fair election. Yet when the dems lost and rant and rave about how they lost in a stolen election they are called whiners..... So if a fair election is lost it is ok to whine about it but if an election is stolen by fraud it is not ok..... Gotta love the repub sense of justice.
