Obama's military-like ground operation

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 4, 2008 05:13 PM

By Brian C. Mooney, Globe Staff

CLEVELAND -- If this election day produces fewer of the registration-related voting glitches than those that have plagued past presidential contests, the campaign of Democrat Barack Obama can take some credit.

Obama's prodigious field organization not only pulled tens of millions of voters to the polls, his army of field operatives was part of a highly sophisticated voter education and outreach effort that operated with military precision in equipping voters with information to help them avoid problems at the polls.

In door-to-door contacts all across the country, campaign canvassers left millions of large pieces of literature hanging on doorknobs that contained detailed voter information tailored to that particular state and voters' particular precinct.

Here's how it worked:

At an Obama staging area in a small former office building on Euclid Avenue in East Cleveland, the Obama campaign's canvassers were divided into red, white, and blue teams with assigned geographic areas to cover in one ward of Cleveland and all of the city of East Cleveland, a largely black suburb. Each team had a room with stacks of door-hangers laid out on the floor, each with a street map of the area to be covered and lists of previously identified likely Obama voters by each street.

The back of each 18-inch-long piece of literature, included the following information in large type: the name and number of the precinct for the area, the address and name of the polling station, the hours the polls would be open, and vital information concerning Ohio voting laws -- a detailed list of what would be considered valid identification that would be required of all voters, a notation that if a voter is in line at the time polls close the voter had the right to vote, and a toll-free telephone number to call for any questions.

The East Cleveland staging area also had a busy phone bank room and a room set aside to nourish the 100 or so volunteers who moved in and out throughout the day. We're not talking cold pizza, either. Besides drinks and snacks, there was an abundant supply of fried chicken, chili, and sandwiches.

Like the Obama operation everywhere, the team was multiracial, mostly young, and included volunteers from far away, in this case, Canada, the United Kingdom, California, New York, and historically black Morehouse and Spelman colleges in Atlanta.

Of course there was great food....that was Cleveland. Totally flabbergasted me when I moved there. The attitude there is " we feel like cooking..book the music...what are we celebrating?"

Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld gang has severely reduced the prestige, power and standing of America in the world using dictatorial behavior, isolation theory and above all inhumane and war mongering conduct. At the end of 8 years rule this goons have lost their own image, bankrupted not only America but their associates around the Globe and their own majority of Republicans, who have supported them.
On the other hand, Obama has raised his image as the Messiah to save this Nation from further debacle. Martin Luther King was the real civil liberty hero but he still was not Obama. He had many trust worthy friends and followers around him still he was lacking political genius like Obama. Obama has played his race, played his youth, played his wisdom and above all played the TIME to suit his goal. Year ago, it was looking impossible to millions but he achieved his goals beyond his limits. He has converted America in to a peace loving, gentle, compassionate and humane society. At this time, he has broken all the boundaries of red America and blue America and time will tell whether he will be able to change the world making rich and poor Nations as each other's saviors spreading his message of brotherhood and humanity.
Let hope that Obama live longer and Americans and the world listen him like a Messiah to fulfill his God given task.

I think Dr. Donna's comment epitomizes everything that is wrong with this country and with the Republican party in particular. Democrats do a good job getting out the vote and educating voters, and employ effective strategies, and this is 'New World Order Obama Style.' What a reactive, simplistic and frankly stupid way to respond to the reality that more voters will exercise their greatest right as Americans today. Enjoy the new world, Donna. Hope your archaic mind can adjust.

Now that the Dems are organized and effective, suddenly these posters are saying that Obama and the Dems are fascists or communists? What's wrong with this picture?

Obama is a true leader in every way. He rallies people, gives them something to hope for and to work for, organizes them, and helps them to be maximally effective. Isn't that the American way?

Obama is doing more for Democracy and Voting than McCain/Palin and their supporters.
How many people is voting for the first time in their lives? We have people on both sides and all sides voting. They say at least 150 million people going to vote, that is 1/2 the population of the United States. If you eliminate people 18+ and under, illegal immigrants and non-citizens. That is an impressive number in a Democracy. Obama and Biden with some help from McCain and even Palin has show the world Democracy works. Get ready for RIPPLE EFFECT showing Democracy works. To call this Liberal Fascism is ridiculous. What is outrageous about this is not that the Obama campaign organized this voter education program, but rather that this "example" of democracy required that its citizens be taught how to vote because of how complicated it has become. Our voting system doesn't even adhere to international standards. Lets do away with it, and standardize the voter system nation wide so there are less hiccups and confusion, and we can get back to the democracy we're supposed to have.

We let you no-brain pecker-woods run things for 8 years now, and I think we can see that our democracy needs people who actually read, think and act intelligently. So, the party is over for at least another 8 years when our pendulum process might let the little kids back into the playhouse to see how messed up they can make it again.

If bad things should happen in an Obama administration, the bad things will be MORE likely to be reported than the bad things that have happened in the last 8 yrs of Republican rule. In the last 8 yrs, there is no limit to the shady, underhanded steps the administration has gone to in order to try to cover up their malicious activity. Every campaign tries to get out their vote; some simply do it better than others. Those who see something sinister in this are totally off-base. Obama's campaign effort is better because it is more localized (thereby giving more precise information), more intensive (due to its incredible number of volunteers), and more technologically savvy (probably due to the age and skills of his paid and volunteer staffs). It is all very impressive and speaks well of Obama's skills as an executive.

"Fascism" is the opposite of Communism. In Communism, everything is owned by "the people". In Fascism, everything is privately owned (which is why it is also known in places outside the USA as "Corporatism").

"Liberal" means forgiving; generous; and inclusive.

The racist politicians of the 50s and 60s convinced people that "Liberalism" and "Conservatism" were opposites. They aren't.

Liberalism is the opposite of Totalitarianism. In a Totalitarian Regime the government decides what "social issues" are approved or banned (think: reproduction rights, gay rights, minority rights, teaching evolution, and "officially approved: religion). In a Liberal Society, accurate information is made freely available buy the final decisions are left to the individual.

Conservatism is the opposite of Progressivism. Conservatives believe in tradition and maintaining "the good things". Progressivism is about change - hopefully for the better. Two different approaches to the same goals.

Unfortunately, the Republican Party hijacked the word "Conservative", and warped it's REAL meaning.

For those people, who are using Marx name here. Try to find out that his theory explained the sources of the crisis like a current one more than 150 years ago. Some Marxism knowledge as a foundation of capitalism economics would help a lot to the government of our country. The only reason why it is not studied in school as well as dialectics is that ideology of Cold War is still around. I do not like both candidates, however, live Marx alone. I traveled from Utah to Colorado and canvased 250 doors for Obama. The campaigns organization and process of contacting voters face to face is amazing. I spoke with people that had been talked to by Obama volunteers 4 or 5 times face to face and had only got annoying Robo calls from the McCain campaign. Face to face contact is a huge plus for Obamas campaign. In one weekend I changed 8 votes from McCain to Obama. If you multiply that by the number of volunteers in each battle ground state the numbers look nice.

Post #59 was from Sandy. Purely to make a point, I have pasted her message below, but I have substituted certain words to show similar ideas from the opposite political party. Plese read post 59, then read my post below, which is the same logic, but different party preference...

""McCain/Palin are radical idiots. Look who he served with on a committee, Mr Byrd, who used to be in the KKK and is a racist and hater. He also got in trouble for using his political power to get the gvt to go easy on his friend, felon Keating who caused Americans to lose millions of their retirement. Palin long supported Sen Stevens, who was just looked at by the IRS and is convicted of felonies for it. Then you have the gangster and terrorist friends he has, like G Gordon Liddy, who gave people advice on how to shoot federal officers in the head. Oh don’t forget Palin's crazy pastor, who doea laying on of hands and speaking in tongues. Yea really smart guy McCain. On top of all that McCain is a cheater who cheated on his disfigured and crippled wife for 5 yrs before he divorced her and married hot younger wealthy Cindy. How can you be Christian and believe in electing someone like McCain. How about them millions of innocent Americans and Iraqis that died due to the war that McCain voted for and Palin supports. McCain will select conservatives for the courts. Oh yea taxes, spread the wealth he says, so take the middle class workers that are working so hard and tax them more, the money they plan on spending and investing is gone, so guess what they will be forced to live off of unemplyment and social security now, or worse social security disappears because McCain wants people to put social security money in the stock market and it will disappear. Oh yea he is going to tax you more as well….Palin is bad for America, she supports the AIP, which was founded on hate of this country and activism to separate Alaska from the USA, which they hate!""

I found the answer to my question re #29 from Wiki, McCain graduated from US Naval Academy in 1958 near the bottom of his class, 894/899.
No wonder he is similar to George W, third generation of a prominent family (senators for the Bush and admirals for the McCain).

I don't think there is a big difference between Obama and McCain. If the US goes socialism, then I would like the desecrates to bring it.

Is there a reason that every article slightly related to politics must have a long and bitter comments thread composed mostly of anger and ad hominem attacks? If you must say something, say it without anger. Feel free to state your opinion, but do so in a positive manner. If you have to denounce somebody else's, use facts and reasoning. And perhaps most important on this particular comment thread, don't start attacking somebody who makes an uninformed or fallacious comment. Sure, you can correct them. Twice. More that, and your appearance leans toward that of a fanatic. Be gentle and kind.

I didn't vote for the guy but, just maybe, He can get the Legislators to do something useful rather than assigning blame to the other party, and that in itself would be Historic !

Wow, Mohandas!

I really mean it. Thanks for bringing us to reasoning. We must admit that we, including me!, respond to impulsive anger and we loose our reasoning.

Thanks for bringing this point to light and may the Mohama of all Mohamas (Mohandas Gandhi) message continue to enlighten our thinking.

No, I am not from India but I very much believe in Hindu Philosophy.

I think the rings of Facism around Obama come from some similarities-- pride in inviting and orchestrating huge crowds for soaring speeches without any details, required education programs for youth that might be construed as government indoctrination, one sided press coverage, playing the good cop/ bad cop with his racist subordinates, blurring divide between business and government using prefabricated crises, demonizing any opponents for their clothes, gender, age, etc.
It is unfair to call Obama Hitler because Obama is so well cemented to the US Jewish community. Try Stalin, Putin, the South African ANC Party, or Bush.
