Powell praises Obama's victory

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 5, 2008 10:33 AM

Colin Powell, the retired general and former secretary of state whose high-profile endorsement of Barack Obama helped ease voter worries about the Democrat's foreign policy credentials, teared up when talking about Obama's "historic" election.

"President-elect Obama is going to be a president for all of America," Powell said today during a visit in Hong Kong, the Associated Press reported. "He also happens to be black, which makes it a very, very historic occasion."

"The American people are responding with great emotion and with great pride in our system that we have seen this latest step in reconciliation with respect to our race relations," he told reporters. "We have not completely reconciled within my society, with my country. But what Mr. Obama represents is the best of America."

The AP said Powell's eyes moistened as he added, "He has run a campaign that is inclusive ... The fact that he is also black just has turned American on. It's very emotional."

Powell said he believes Obama will work, "perhaps more broadly than the past administration ... with allies, to listening to allies, to hearing what they have to say, and taking their interests into account."

Let's hope Powell agrees to a post in the new administration.

Tiger? Shut up and pack and feel free to move to Alaska. It's all about economy, not hunting moose, ok? Don't be a hater, face it, and please call PRESIDENT OBAMA... like it or not? Who cares how you feel loser.

I'm a righty and I agree with JoshyR, I would be very happy if Powell is made Secretary of State or Defense. A much better pick than Kerry.

As a 'Québécois' and a Canadian fighting for 'Human Rights', I am quite proud to have for Neighbour a Nation that has finally open its doors to more compassion in choosing for its President Barack Hussein Obama, and finally as quoted by the french newspaper 'Le Canard.enchaîné' of this morning : 'America is no more afraid of darkness.' Bravo ! Pierre Gauvin-Évrard

woke up this morning to a brave, new world. Not surprising, the sun rose again today and I’m still breathing. This is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it. History was made last night and no matter where you sit on the political spectrum, you have to recognize it.

But if you think my support of the President-elect means that I won’t oppose him politically, philosophically and ideologically, you don’t know me very well. Remember, as we’ve been hearing for eight years now, dissent is the highest form of patriotism… though I wonder if the Left will continue to hold that line now. There is still so much we don’t know about Barack Obama. We, as a country, have cast our bet on the table… now we must figure out how to play the cards we’ve been dealt. It may not be easy… but then again, things worth fighting for rarely are.

I refuse to be like my liberal counterparts who, for the past two Presidential elections, sunk into a deep depression at the thought of an electoral loss. I am proud to be an American, where we can enjoy the peaceful transfer of power… even to those with whom we disagree so passionately. It’s what makes America the greatest country on earth.

And today, like every day, I am proud to be an American.

Now this country is one. It has to act as one and move forward out of these economic problems and Iraq. We also have to be realistic. Everything promised will not be delivered. How Obama prioritizes his administartion is what is most important at this time.

THW - Let's just be clear. Now that a Democrat will be in the White House, it's all about "working together" and no more "us versus them". McCain is Mr. Work Across Party lines. Had he won would you be talking about "working together" or would you be calling the election a fraud and demonizing him. Even Bush tried to do the "working together" thing in regard to issues like Medicare drug benefits and Social Security reform. The Democrats in Congress have hardly been about "working together". But, now, the Republicans are expected to work together with Obama to get his agenda done? Mind you, I just want a government that works well and in which I can be proud. I hope Obama is a great president - for the good of our country. But, next time a Republican gets in, I hope you will remember the "working together" idea.

It is a historical and proud moment for all Americans. While our president elect represents equal opportunity for all... we still have our own rights and responsibilities to protect. One man, one government -alone cannot solve the countries' problems. Stand up and be responsible, self reliant and teach our children the same.

Tiger, your ignorance no longer has a voice. It is time to grow up as a country and forget repression of the things you fear.

YOUR president of fear is leaving a lot to repair, Obama seems like the rebirth for this country and just may pull it off. We are all citizens of the world, not conquerors, it is time we had a leader who understood that.

Its the blind leading the blind in this country. People did not care about any of the negative aspects of Mr. Obama. Larry Ayers, Citizenship issues, Jeremiah Wright, Tony Resko, his ULTRA liberal abortion stand, and a plethora of other issues that Mr. Obama stands for. Why do people truely not care about his affiliations? Do we really know what he stands for??? We will shortly.

I am all for the United States of America, and as an Independant voter, I am not fettered by partisan politics. To me, Mr. Obama never answered the bell. He outright refused to provide any information in regards to his citizenship (besides releasing a counterfeit copy of a “Live Birth” certificate from Hawaii). Isn’t it interesting that in order to attend school in Indonesia at the time (they were at war) you HAD to be a citizen. The only way Mr. Obama would have been able to attend that school is if he renounced his US Citizenship (which he did, and further proved it when he traveled to the Middle East on an Indonesian passport in the mid 90’s). This is an open issue. This is why I could not, with full confidence vote for Mr. Obama. When other candidates were open and honest about their backgrounds, while Mr. Obama was hiding his.
Nonetheless, I stand today behind Mr. Obama. He is MY President. He is our leader for the next 4 years and I wish him no ill will. I wish him the best, and my thoughts and prayers are with him and his administration.
Sidebar:
To the Black community in specific but to minorities in general: Today is a day to celebrate the accomplishments of the last 40 years. It is with great pride that I stand here as an American today knowing that a man of color will be our President. Am I completely sold on his qualifications or background? No, but I salute and cheer the great progress and strides we have made in this country. We should not be consumed with our petty differences, today is a day that we need to stand united behind President Obama and pray for his success. God knows our country needs it right now.

JP Gal - Colin Powell for the Supreme Court?...what a foolish statement. He is a General, not a justice. It would have better if you said Colin Powell for President two years ago (but his wife won't let him run anyway, that was why he did not run previously).

i voted and support obama 100% but the fact that 97% of african americans voted for obama is a tad bit scary...did they vote for the best candidate or just the black candidate, if mccain were black and obama were white would they have voted for mccain? and if the country were only 12% white would we ever have a white president? i voted for obama because for the first time since i can remember i am inspired by a politician...im optimistic about the future of our country. im sure i will be bashed for these thoughts but something to think about...

Obama is 50% Caucasian, that from his mother. What those who want Mr. Obama to write history by becoming "America's first African-American president" ignore is that his father was ethnically Arabic, with only 1 relative ethnically African Negro - a maternal great-grandparent (Sen. Obama's great-great grandparent, thus the 6.25% ethnic contribution to the senator's ethnic composition.).

That means that Mr. Obama is 50% Caucasian from his mother's side. He is 43.75% Arabic, and 6.25% African Negro from his father's side. Obama's roots not only do not point to him being African American, but that he is a descendant of Arab slave traders. Researching his roots reveal that on his father's side, he is descended from Arab slave traders. They operated under an extended grant from Queen Victoria, who gave them the right to continue the slave trade in exchange for helping the British defeat the Madhi Army in southern Sudan and the Upper Nile region. Funny how circular is history; now the British again face the Madhi Army, albeit this time Shiite, not Sunni, as in nineteenth century Sudan.
But telling America's black community that while their ancestors were breaking the shackles of slavery, Mr. Obama's ancestors were placing those shackles upon their wrists would hardly play as an Oprah Winfrey best-seller.

To Tiger:
The Bush Administration threw Powell under the bus!! Don't you remember? Why would he reward the party that has shown him so little regard, using him as a symbol and then trying to ruin his career? Get real, seriously. McCain should be respected, but let's not start slinging undeserved epithets.

Now we can almost surely expect:
– Swift amnesty for 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens and a drive to make them citizens and register them, as in the Bill Clinton years. This will mean that Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona will soon move out of reach for GOP presidential candidates, as has California.
– Border security will go on the backburner, and America will have a virtual open border with a Mexico of 110 million.
– Taxes will be raised on the top 5 percent of wage-earners, who now carry 60 percent of the U.S. income tax burden, and tens of millions of checks will be sent out to the 40 percent of wage-earners who pay no federal income tax. Like the man said, redistribute the wealth, spread it around.
– Social Security taxes will be raised on the most successful among us, and capital gains taxes will be raised from 15 percent to 20 percent. The Bush tax cuts will be repealed, and death taxes reimposed.
– Two or three more liberal activists of the Ruth Bader Ginsberg-John Paul Stevens stripe will be named to the Supreme Court. U.S. district and appellate courts will be stacked with “progressives.”
– Special protections for homosexuals will be written into all civil rights laws, and gays and lesbians in the military will be invited to come out of the closet. “Don’t ask, don’t tell” will be dead.
– The homosexual marriages that state judges have forced California, Massachusetts and Connecticut to recognize, an Obama Congress or Obama court will require all 50 states to recognize.
– A “Freedom of Choice Act” nullifying all state restrictions on abortions will be enacted. America will become the most pro-abortion nation on earth.
– Affirmative action — hiring and promotions based on race, sex and sexual orientation until specified quotas are reached — will be rigorously enforced throughout the U.S. government and private sector.
– Universal health insurance will be enacted, covering legal and illegal immigrants, providing another powerful magnet for the world to come to America, if necessary by breaching her borders.
– A federal bailout of states and municipalities to keep state and local governments spending up could come in December or early next year.
– The first trillion-dollar deficit will be run in the first year of an Obama presidency. It will be the first of many.
Welcome to Obamaland!

I honestly don't care whether Obama is black or white. I voted for the more competent manager and rational decision maker. Sure, I think Obama loves his country; John McCain loves his country and so does W -- so do I, but love of country is not the deciding factor. We need competence in the White House.

I hope that we can move from a polarized country to one where we actually stop and listen to one another's view points be it left or right and do what is best for our country and play our part as a world leader, not a world dictatorship. The days of strong arming countries and refusing to sit down and have a conversation hopefully are now behind us.

I couldn't be more proud and hopeful to be an American than I am today.

Powell was careful to say that Obama just so happens to be black. But who are we kidding. It's obvious from all the news coverage, and the way the Obama campaign was run, that it has always been about race. From the primaries, the news media had been talking about the 'historic significance' of his candidacy. They have been calling for history to be made. Why is this history? Because Obama is BLACK!!!!!! Hello, wide-eyed liars! He is Black, that's why he is elected. Now if Powell ran, we might talk a lot more about his accomplishments, experience, etc. and then may be every now and then remark that he is black, and then he would brush it off as insignificant. But for Obama, all he's got is his race. He has no accomplishments and experience (practically in anything at all). That's why his candidacy is all about race. And the media spends 90% of the time interviewing black folks to talk about Obama's greatness as a black person..... It's all about being black. I bet the color for the next season would be black. LOL.

Our new President, Senator Obama indeed has accomplished a great victory for all people of color; however it's important to realize how he developed the mindset for becoming a person of such influence. Facts: His sorry, weak father left his son "Obama" and his mother high and dry. Obamas "white mom" raised him along with the help of her "white parents" teaching him how to succeed and win in America. So in your studies of "how" he became the man he did, please do not exclude or forget the fact that he was raised in a white home. Don't get angry, get the facts.
