Reaction to Obama win

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 5, 2008 01:23 AM

Reaction is pouring into Barack Obama's historic election as president.

From Hillary Clinton, his one-time rival:

"Tonight, we are celebrating an historic victory for the American people. This was a long and hard fought campaign but the result was well worth the wait.

"Together, under the leadership of President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and a Democratic Congress, we will chart a better course to build a new economy and rebuild our leadership in the world. And I look forward to doing all that I can to support President Obama and Vice President Biden in the difficult work that lies ahead.

"For too long, middle class families in this country have felt invisible, struggling alone as wages stagnate, jobs disappear, and the costs of daily life climb upward. In quiet, solitary acts of citizenship, American voters gave voice to their hopes and their values, voted for change, and refused to be invisible any longer.

From AFL-CIO President John Sweeney:

"A sense of history hangs in the air: The political pendulum is swinging back toward sanity, after many months of work by people of all ages, races, stations and faiths hungry for change. Two years ago, voters began voicing real dissatisfaction with the war in Iraq; this year, a financial tsunami stirred record levels of frustration. It took the inspiration of a rare leader to translate these concerns into an election the likes of which have not been seen in a generation. Barack Obama brings new hope to America’s working families, and our increased majority in the Senate means we can translate that hope into reality.

"We salute labor leaders and volunteers all across our country for a record turnout of voters from union households — they made the difference in critical states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio and so many others. We congratulate Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Our prayers and our continuing support are with them as we begin the arduous task of turning our country around.

From Ellen R. Malcolm, president and founder of EMILY’s List:

“What a proud moment in our nation’s history. My most heartfelt congratulations to President-elect Obama and Vice President-elect Biden, their families, campaign staff, volunteers, supporters, voters — everyone who participated in this brilliant campaign for change. It is clear from the results tonight that women voters across the country, worried about the economic fate of their families, turned to Barack Obama as the person they could trust to make a difference for middle class families. The Bush years are finally coming to an end, and we now have a leader we can trust to rebuild our economy, strengthen our families, and protect our most cherished rights. Our nation faces many challenges — but I, for one, look forward to supporting President-elect Obama as he moves us toward a brighter future and restores our standing as a beacon of hope for the world.”

From Al From, founder and CEO of the Democratic Leadership Council:

“Barack Obama’s landmark election, along with sweeping Democratic gains in the Senate, the House, and statehouses around the country, gives Democrats an historic chance to reverse our nation’s course and build a lasting national majority.

“Now our most important challenge has just begun. Democrats must prove we can do what George W. Bush could not: usher in a new era of economic growth, reform, and innovation.

“The hyper-partisanship of the last eight years has failed America – putting the American dream out of reach for too many here at home and undermining our country’s strength abroad.

“The central promise of President-elect Obama’s campaign was to change Washington and forge a post-partisan political era with a real reform agenda that will put our country back on the path of growth and prosperity.

“President-elect Obama’s big promise propelled his campaign, but keeping it in office will be even more crucial to the success of his presidency.”

From Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean:

"This has been a truly historic, transformational election. Tonight, our country chose hope over fear, the future over the past, unity over division. This election also reflects the passing of the torch to a new generation. Barack Obama inspired young voters across this country to answer the call and get involved. They responded to his promise to put partisanship and divisiveness aside and come together as one nation to find solutions. They turned out. They made calls. They knocked on doors. And they helped change our country.

"The American people have given all of us - Democrats, Republicans and Independents - a simple mandate: to work together find big solutions to the big challenges facing our country. We must work together to change the direction of our wonderful country and to restore America. With the help of strong Democratic majorities in Congress, President Barack Obama is going to set this nation on a course to provide the change we need.

"Today I am humbled by what we have accomplished over the last four years. Together, we can build on this moment to bring our nation together and work as one to overcome the challenges we face. It is what we as Americans have always done. Under Barack Obama's leadership, we'll do it again."

From Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America:

“Tonight marks the beginning of a new era for America, with a leader in the White House who respects women’s ability to make personal, private decisions,” Keenan said. “Sen. Obama’s strong support for a woman’s right to choose galvanized voters across the country. The clear contrast between Obama’s pro-choice values and John McCain’s extreme anti-choice record made an enormous difference in this race. Sen. Obama’s visionary pledge to change the tone of the debate over reproductive rights struck a chord with Americans looking for a leader to move the country away from the divisive attacks and rhetoric that have dominated our nation’s political process for the last eight years. As the first major pro-choice organization to endorse Sen. Obama, we are proud of our members who volunteered for his campaign and whose support made it possible for us to persuade key swing voters to support his candidacy in all 50 states. We look forward to working with our new pro-choice president in protecting women’s health and privacy."

To Iowans, a state with less than 3% of Black population, THANK YOU FOR GIVING BARACK OBAMA WINGS WITH WHICH TO FLY ACROSS AMERICA and finally ending the yoke of slavery.
To those color blind white Americans who gave their unconditional support to this young African American including voting for him, THANK YOU!!!

What an exciting election and day this has been! Today, I took my first-born grandson (3 yr old) with me to vote. Both of us have been strong Obama supporters during this long campaign journey. How privileged I felt to lift my grandson up and together, he and I voted for our candidate. I felt so honored to have that experieince - my first garndson, his first vote with me, and together we voted for the first African-American president who represents change to us - as well as unity of ALL people. God Bless Barack Obama and his family...thank you for inspiring America again. I look forward to your leadership of our country.

I am amazed that a Harvard Law graduate would take a job as a 'communuty organizer', never having had a job in retail, distribution, manufacturing, services or anything that looks like a real job and can gain the confidence of so many... simply base his claim to change on a lazy populace that wants as much for free as possible... Freedom has never been free. It was always paid forward. Now is this the point where we look back and see where a population gave it away?

Is Obama just Jesse Jackson without religion? What is it that he actually brings to the table other than a gift for reading off a teleprompter? We will all get to find out... The Democrats have had control of both houses for 2 years... When did the economy go south... right ... in the last 18 months. Now what damage will they do with a leader that is the most Liberal by voting record?

Just how much Liberty and free speech will we have in 2 years? Will we have any border security? How long with the enemies of the US wait to attack now they know we are a country without a spine?

You get what you pay for... We have bought it...

truthspeaker, massachusetts is electing a democratic buffoon. that is your opinion. so what about governor palin, if obama is a buffoon, what is she? the woman thinks that her having russia 10 miles away from her, gives her foreign policy experience.

Listen to the way you talk truthspeaker. We know that both candidates for the white house stretched the truth to carry their message. Indeed McCain floated more than his fair share of outright lies.

Where do you think the US is going down to? Under Republican "stewardship" the U.S. has massively compounded its debt and has chosen to commit massive sums of money to an unecessary war rather than invest it in infrastructure, green jobs and the next generation of students and professionals.

Mr McCain is a great American. But his tax policy would take more money out of the tax base, pushing the U.S. further into deficit than even Obama tax breaks would! Any more deficit spending is tantamount to a hidden tax on the next generation. You folks need to pull up your bootstraps, wean yourself of all that credit, and start working together as if your survival depended on it. If not, China will quietly outmaneuver US geopolitical and economic strength.

to truthspeaker,

The only truth you spread is that of a stymied and narrow point of view.

To Barack Obama.... congratulations! Not because you're the 1st African American to become president, but because for the first time in a long time, someone with intelligence will be in charge, instead of some imbecile who lets others manipulate him to their desire.

Finally, that bastard GW Bush will finally leave and crawl back to whatever hole he, Dick Cheney, and all of those other bastards came from.

"Pro-choice president"
something which americans must be afraid of. How can the right to choose to abort an unborn something to be proud of? How can the right to choose to kill an innocent life inside a woman's womb be something to be jubilant about? These "feminists" and pro-choice women don't get it. Such selfishness can only bring more degradation of the American values, values which their American founders have fought for.

day for America, proof of its power of regeneration. Thanks all for that, thanks especially to the grumpy, hallucinating rightwing bloggers with their cut and paste from the Free Republic and other lying sites. You showed us the dangers of voting GOP again, a party that hopefully will now reject you and your imbecility out of hand, so that you can only associate with the Aryan Brotherhood and the KKK.

Sad day for America?
Absolutely NOT! What we saw last night was nothing short of breath taking. Put aside the historical aspect of an African American becoming President less than 50 years after African Americans were considered 2nd class in this country. Last night the voice of so many individuals of all walks of life who have been silenced for too long became one LOUD roar for change! As a White Man in this country, I have never been more proud to be an American and of OUR place in the world than I was last night! This Great Country has turned a page and is once again on it's way to being the light which guides the world.
A GREAT day for America - God Bless

This is anything but a sad day for America. It's a new day, a new start and it's what America has always stood for. This should give a new sense of hope to the average person living here and also be an inspiration to those who have felt "left behind". Let us bring some respect for each other back into society here, it has been absent for too long.

I agree with "truthspeaker". People are so blinded by what they want to hear that they couldn't see the forest through the trees. This hypocrite played the game right. He told people what they wanted to hear without really saying anything. The day he said that the american people "listened to the wrong radio stations and watched the wrong tv shows" should have opened eyes. I'm going to make a bumper sticker that says "DON'T BLAME ME: I VOTED FOR THE WAR HERO!" The only upside to "junior" becoming president is the possiblity of taking our governor with him. "together we can" meant nothing as sadly this country will see that his "change for america" will mean nothing. To all those who blindly voted for him without really knowing what he stands for...SHAME ON YOU! Wait....you'll see.

Now that the decision has been made, we as a country need to get behind our President and help get this country back on its feet. in reply to truthspeaker....
I suggest you stop the blame game, and using blame as an excuse for apathy. Change has come to this country, in so many ways. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to contribute. One man can not do what needs to be done for this country, alone. Nor has he suggested that he could.
You can sit on your hands and be 'sad', or stand up and be involved.
Your choice.

Regardless of our politcal orientation, we all must agree on the fact that this election was simply historic not only in the election of an African American president, but in the fact that it motivated the masses like never before. If Obama can continue to engage the American public, then perhaps we can all find more bipartisan common ground. We can only hope.

It seems to me "truthspeaker" that America has been going down for some time now. America has spoken in record numbers that they are ready for a different path. Time will only tell how our country will get back on its feet. We must be realistic and see that regardless who had won this election, fixing the problems of this country and the financial concerns of so many will be a daunting and hard battle to fight. Our problems as a nation will not be fixed over night.
Please justifiy your words of "hypocrite and liar" for me so I may understand specifically why you say what you say. I am a firm believer that if people are to make accusations about someone, they need to have the proof. When I am proven wrong I do admit it, but it must be proved to me.

More social programs for those who don't want to work (redistribution of wealth).Oh, and by the way ,while we're at it let's take away everyone's guns so they can't protect themselves from those who do not want to work(H.R.10-22) look it up.WOW,I can't believe America is this hard up for "CHANGE" . There is a reason why truth speaker and Bob Gill are so few in this Blog...they are the MINORITY...last night, Obama didn't win because he is black...he won because the MAJORITY of Americans knew that the country was in ruins...he is not only our beacon of hope...but he is the catalyst that will get everyone to be responsible for the state of their own affairs and the country.

"Pull your pants up"...that's the beginning. I can only imagine what will happen in our future.

Obama said it best when he said that Kennedy aspired to see man on the moon within 10 years...we didn't know how we would do it...but we set a goal...and we met it.

Obama won't be on a ranch riding horses or hunting and shooting at Quail (or friends) he will lead. McCain knew it...the republican party knew it...that's why they tried to defile this man...who is perfect for the America we live in today...united, color-blind, and strong.

Jennifer, I fear you have missed part of the victor's point. "All we can do is wait and see" was your last comment. I stand to correct, as the fervor, the zest, the drive of this campaign was about Unity, Accountability, Responsibility. It was about asking the hard questions -- and an invitation to be more engaged and involved. Obama was the only one of ANY of the candidates to look the American people in the eye and ask us to admit that we too were at fault for the financial crisis this autumn. His point of "Yes we can" is not "Yes Barrack can". We CANNOT sit idly by, not after this brilliant victory and not with these problems to tackle. If we are to stop now and tell our government to "fix it" -- then we are dooming ourselves to failure. Please be vigile. Thank you to all out there who've helped get this country started. The real work starts now. If you truly love this country, then you do not laugh at her when she fails. You get your ass up and do your research. Thanks again, America! I'm sooo stoked!

I don't understand the comments relating to abortion issues. Do you seriously only choose your president based on where they stand on the issue of abortion? Is there not more to politics? Please be consistant. You cannot support war and a child's right to life at the same time.

it is really sad when people say that Obama was not elected because he was black. The percentage of people who voted for Obama just because he is black is ridiculous! i mean it is great that a black person is president, dont get me wrong, but when skin color is the reason that you are voting for the man than there is a problem. "To Iowans, a state with less than 3% of Black population, THANK YOU FOR GIVING BARACK OBAMA WINGS WITH WHICH TO FLY ACROSS AMERICA and finally ending the yoke of slavery.
To those color blind white Americans who gave their unconditional support to this young African American including voting for him, THANK YOU!!!". its comments like this that make me angry. it is typical american ignorance to say something like this, its unfortunate that there are many americans that think this way. this election should have been about who was best suited to run this country, not about ending the "yoke of slavery". and by the way, there should be no "yoke". slavery is over and people need to get over it, just about every other race has had its moments of slavery in history, and africans were sold into slavery by there own people. we can all be angry at eachother for the injustices of the past or we can put it behind us and move on. if you really want a "change", than people need to learn to move on. god bless everyone and equality to all!!!

To Ron,
Your good leadership put this country in the toilet and if that is how capitalism fares over socialism, I would rather have socialism any day. Perhaps, if your good leader idiot Bush had not vetoed everything that Congress presented, progess could have been made,oh it is more convenient to ignore that fact. I mean really what king of good, white Christian ( yeah right) like Bush, denies healthcare to children?D oes that really embodies the country we should all be proud to live in.? If that is how good leaderships is, give me CHANGE any day.

I guess what I am saying is why isn't it not metioned that he is also half white. He is not of one race but two - so would you not call him white-African American? My son's father is black, but I don't call him african american, he is of me and his father - he has both of us in him not just one.
