The Boss to Obama: Lead us through 'crossroads'

Posted by Scott Helman, Political Reporter November 2, 2008 06:59 PM

CLEVELAND -- No one can quite make the case like Bruce Springsteen, the eloquent lyricist, observer of America, and Jersey-bred ambassador to the working man.

Tonight he shared a stage with Barack Obama in downtown Cleveland, where 80,000 people came to see the double billing. In between stirring acoustic renditions of "This Land Is Your Land" and "The Rising," Springsteen offered a harsh indictment of President Bush's tenure, calling the Republican leadership "thoughtless" and "reckless."

"We at the crossroads," he said. "I spent most of my life as a musician measuring the distance in our music between the American dream and the American reality. And I look around today and many Americans are losing their jobs, or their homes, or seeing their retirement funds disappear, and don't have health care."

He went on, "The distance between that dream and that reality has grown greater and more painful than ever. And I believe that Senator Obama has taken a measure of that distance in his own life and in his own work."

Springsteen said he remained hopeful.

America, he said,"remains a house of dreams. And 1,000 George Bushes and 1,000 Dick Cheneys will never be able to tear that house down."

"Senator Obama, help us rebuild that house," he continued. "I want my country back. I want my dream back. I want my America back."

Gee, our next President has a long standing relationship with a terrorist, a racist pastor, and illegal alien (who can't afford her rent, but can afford to send some of her welfare check to Obummer). He cannot qualify for a Secret Service Position (but he'll be in charge of them), cannot produce a Birth Certificate, and has never served in an Executive capacity. Lest we forget, he's never proposed a piece of legislation. Yea, he's qualified. Wake up America!

Why does anyone care what a guy who sings songs for a living has to say about this? Being a good singer doesn't make you relevant in any other forums - why don't we ask Paris Hilton, or maybe we should check in to see what Mylie Cyrus thinks? This is a perfect example of the dumbing down of America.

Give me a break! I love Bruce but the man is a left winged, left brained liberal who still has scars from the Vietman War ( he lost a buddy in the war or something like that). His opinion is worth no more than mine or yours and I'm voting for McCain. He's a war hero and has YEARS of experience allowing him to run this nation. Obama has nothing but his speeched and his poorly chosen relationships. He will raise eveyones taxes, crush small business, demoralize the military and bring us back to the Jimmy Carter days. I still love Bruce but he's lost touch with the working man decades ago.

To quote the Boss, I did my best to live the right way/get up in the morning and go to work each day. Unfortunate for myself and others in this country like my, you wake to see you piece of the American dream getting marginilized by greed, mostly due to the mess made by the mortgage industry. I never used my home as a piggy bank, I did not buy a home that would put me way over my head. I did not pay off my credit cards by using my home as a piggy bank. My eyes were never to big for my stomach. This year it is not a Republican or Democrat problem, it is an American problem. My home is worth less than I paid for it, my retirement savings (401k) has taken a major hit. It is not about guns owners rights, pro life or pro choice, it is about America and Americans. Please remember this come tuesday.

If you are a white guy - before you go and pull the lever for Obama, remember that the Democratic Party is the party of "affirmative action".

What that means in an employment situation is you're not getting the job. That's their idea of American values.

There are too few really great and eloquent men in our time, and only a handful who stir me.

There are two such men. They are thoughtful and rousing and they appeared together tonight.

Each time I hear - Badlands or Jungle Land or Atlantic City - I am filled with Pride and Hope - just as when Senator Obama speaks.

Bruce Springsteen and Barack Obama - two Great Americans - two winners.

We will have our country back - and God Bless America.

Just got back from there. Are you sure there were only 80,000? There were probably more who couldn't get in. The lines were super long as early as 2 when the gates were supposedly opened. It was amazing! The Boss performed very well. I think all of us there share his sentiments about the current administration. It's not about hating America, but quite the opposite. It's because we care and want to rebuild this country into something we can once again be proud of and be respected on the world stage. Obama will be the catalyst that fosters the change we so badly need for this to happen.

Bruce can make a case for who? Someone who has to pay $100s of dollars to hear him sing a little and talk too much? Typical. The only people he thinks he is speaking for are made up in his mind. I know, those people are everywhere, but there are people everywhere else who are doing just fine. If you just take care of yourself and some of your friends, they will reciprocate when you cannot. Guess what, you will be just fine. But if all you want to do is look for anything wrong just to justify your "Eeyore" attitude, then you elevate Obama to take care of you. Guess what, it is only going to get worse with him. He is only going to take care of his "friends", and you are not one of them.

We must agree that the country belongs to all of us not some of us just because we sound or look different. Even if Obama does not win this election, we can still be proud of our country and thank senator Obama for remaining us that we are one America, muslim America, Jewish American, christian America, Ethiest America. Bruce Springsteen is right on messsage! We ALL want our country back, Bruce.
Of COURSE the entire locus of political discourse in the USA has shifted dramatically to the right ever since Ronald Reagan began his assault on democracy! Of COURSE the Liberals within the Democratic party have been pushed rightward ever since the military-industrial complex and the Pentagon began to command such enormous power over the national economy! Obama CANNOT single-handedly reverse over 60 years of militaristic dominance, but he CAN resist the insidious influence that the JCS exerted upon JFK and LBJ. He CAN understand how historically the Pentagon has done everything in its power to grow and aggrandize its sphere of influence within our nation's economic life. He CAN stimulate a far-reaching public debate on the PROPER role of the military in a truly democratic First World post-industrial society. He CAN assert the right of the government to properly manage the business cycle in order to prevent the types of abuses that led to the Crash of 1929 and the Meltdown of 2008!

Obama CAN explode the myths of "deregulation", "privatization", "compassionate conservatism", "trickle-down economics", "monetarism", "free markets" and a host of other fabrications by means of which corporate tools and apologists like Alan Greenspan have enabled the elite to amass enormous wealth at public expense!

Obama CAN initiate a series of programs that will use public funding to support education, sanitation, medical research, rebuilding of our near-shattered infrastructure, and provide a decent level of affordable healthcare to all citizens. These are NOT ENTITLEMENTS! They are RIGHTS, earned by US, the CITIZENS, with our TAX DOLLARS!!

Obama CAN begin to focus upon this theme. He CAN initiate a massive public debate that educates our citizens about the fallacies of the elite agenda that has been rammed down America's throat over these last 28 years!

Obama CAN begin to expose the cynical ruse of neoconservative terminology! He CAN begin his own "fireside chats" to the American people. In those chats he can address many of the abuses that have been unleashed against our public in the name of "security" and "patriotism". He CAN discuss in detail why the public sector is VITAL in its role as watchdog, to PREVENT massive profit-taking by private companies at PUBLIC EXPENSE!

Obama CAN point out for all our citizens, exactly how and why government in a modern capitalist economy has an obligation to exert its influence in such a way as to guarantee that allocation of human and natural resources benefit society as a WHOLE!

Obama CAN explode the fallacy that "the market" will regulate itself! He can explode the fallacy that "the unfettered market" will properly determine the best way to "spend" our wealth and resources as a nation!
In fact, the LARGER the margin of VICTORY in this crucial election, the GREATER will be the influence our citizenry exert upon the executive branch led by Barack Obama. The President under such circumstances will be JUSTIFIED in claiming a true and real MANDATE for change! There are a multitude of things that Obama CAN accomplish if he receives a HUGE percentage of the popular vote, and if the Democrats gain a HUGE electoral triumph in all races, local, state and Federal. Under THOSE circumstances, Obama will have enough popular and legislative support to drive several programs that put PEOPLE FIRST.

There is no question that the “business community” (read here “wealthy elite”) will be adamantly opposed to many of Obama’s efforts. He will have to craft an approach that is morally and pragmatically unassailable. He has the astuteness to select outstanding personnel to staff his administration. He has the brilliance of mind to formulate policies that will enhance our stature in the world, without alienating us from the international community. He has the perspicacity to consider long-term effects of tactics, policies, procedures and legislation that are implemented in the short term. He has the personal charisma to mobilize, galvanize and revitalize a huge segment of our citizenry for public service. His resume so far offers ample evidence of these and many other valuable qualities that have been woefully absent from our nation’s “leadership team” over the past 8 years!

America desperately NEEDS genuine leadership, statesmanship, diplomacy, and a much more highly-evolved consciousness in positions of authority, more NOW than perhaps ever before in our history. John Kenneth Galbraith would, were he alive today, be QUITE optimistic about an Obama presidency. So too would JFK and RFK were they alive today! So too would Martin Luther King and many of the giants of the Civil Rights Movement who are no longer with us. Barack Obama is squarely within the tradition of the best and brightest political minds that have guided our nation through previous difficult times. FDR and his New Deal Brain Trust come to mind. Barack Obama is a Constitutional Law specialist! He is a community organizer! He is a U.S. Senator! He is a forward-thinking man of the people! He has a calling and he has the makings to fulfill the promise of our citizenry’s desire for meaningful dialogue about important issues! What we desperately need as a nation, as a body politic, as a citizenry can, and by right ought to be provided by an informed candidate with all the leadership qualities of Barack Obama. We will find out a LOT on November 4 regarding the future direction of our nation.

He is inviting us to an old fashioned rising, where all of us working together, led by Barack Obama, can return this country to the greatness of the past, and return our freedoms to us. We are reminded we can beat the enemy outside without destroying the things that make us different and great.

The distance between the dream and reality is growing simply because everyone thinks they're entitled to a free handout. Obama promises that free handout by spreading the wealth. You're Americans god damn it, get off your ass and work, be an entrepreneur. There's a reason people like Bill Gates have billions of dollars, because they came up with a practical innovative idea. You don't have any claim to another mans money, shame the hell out of you. As a lifelong Bruce fan who once credited Bruce with "saving his life", it pained me beyond measure in 04 when Bruce never saw or ignored the insane irony endorsing the very guy who almost single-handedly created the intense anti-Vietnam veteran sentiment he famously wrote and sang about in "Born in the USA" - the song which (unfortunately...) became his anthem and arguably catapulted him into rock & roll superstardom.

It continues to "pain me beyond measure" that Bruce continues to support the very people who are directly responsible for facilitating the moral, social, financial and physical destruction of the country he claims to still love so much.

Sorry, Bruce, "your dream", "your America" wasn't built on the backs of whining, elitist, self-entitled, racist, murdering, terrorist, left-wing radicals who are unabashed about (ironically) hating America. It was built by the people you used to be really good at singing about.

This is probably the most disturbing thing Obama has ever said and the implications should be terrifying to every freedom-loving american.
