Ann Romney says she had lumpectomy

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor December 5, 2008 11:54 AM

Ann Romney announced today that she has had a procedure for a pre-cancerous lump in her breast.

"Last week, following my annual mammogram at Brigham and Women's Hospital, I was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma In Sutu (DCIS)," she said in a statement. "While this is commonly referred to as early stage breast cancer, it is technically not cancer but rather pre-cancer, as it has not become invasive. Today, I have had a lumpectomy. This procedure does not require hospitalization.

"Mitt and I feel fortunate to have caught this so early. And, it reminds us how important it is for women to have regular mammograms. As in all cases of cancer, early detection is critical. Many families are facing medical hardships--our hearts go out to all of you and also our wishes for healing holidays," she continued.

During the former Massachusetts governor's campaign for president, Romney opened up about her battle with multiple sclerosis to try to raise awareness about the disease. After her diagnosis in 1998, she told campaign audiences, she initially wanted to die, but found strength in support from family.

DCIS IS breast cancer. It is called noninvasive breast cancer. In her effort to downplay for the media her cancerous condition, Ann Romney has done a great disservice to women. I suggest Mrs. Romney read the full breadth of medical research on DCIS. Researchers at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Dana Farber & the Mayo Clinic consistently refer to DCIS as an early stage of breast cancer. In addition, I'm sure if she talked to the thousands of women who have undergone mastectomies and double mastectomies and years of reconstructive surgery on account of DCIS, Mrs. Romney would find her "opinion" very much in the minority.

I'm glad Mrs. Romney will be fine; with her MS, she certainly has enough to worry about with her health. However, with her reputation for privacy and shunning the spotlight, why would she choose to publicize this? What's Mitt running for this week?

God Bless you Ann. I hope this is the end of it and you live a long and healthy life.
Your husband SHOULD have been the Republican nominee for President. Mitt could have won. Look who we've got now.

My best to her and the Romney family. I work in the field of extremely early stage breast cancer detection and am very proud that she not only follows the guidelines but is open with the public on her personal situation. She is in good hands at BWH. Again, best wishes for her and the very classy Romney family.

I have recently been diagnosed with MS and I admire both her grace and strength. Ann is a great human and role model for all. Stop thinking about yourself and make the best of what you have.

i think she omitted that a lumpectomy always is followed by 5-6 weeks of radiation treatment . it's an outpatient treatment, thus no hospitalization, but radiation treatment usally going to a clinic 5 days a week for 5 or 6 weeks....

my cancer surgeon at MGH also said there's no such thing as pre-cancer; when i was weighing my course of action, she said DCIS is cancer....the size of a mass determines whether a lumpectomy is an option....

i assume mrs. romney will have radiation but avoid chemotherapy since it's at an early stage (no lymph node involvement).

i certainly wish all the best....

Unfortunately, this is one more example of poor Ann Romney's inability to speak for herself. What a shame that she has had to be scripted, for better or for worse, throughout her entire adult life. Case in point - anyone remember her not knowing the difference between Roxbury and West Roxbury? In any case, I sincerely hope that her naivety does not mask the true seriousness of her treatment. In the big picture she should be thanking her lucky stars that she is wealthy enough to be able to afford the finest in medical care in the world - without evey blinking an eye! Good luck to Ann.

I wish Mrs. Romney all the best. However, I do wish she or her husband's PR folks wouldn't downplay her diagnosis of DCIS. It IS breast cancer. If you look at CNN's coverage of this story, it quotes from the MAYO clinic website. According to the Mayo Clinic, DCIS is “the most common type of NONINVASIVE BREAST CANCER.” This is serious stuff and can result in women receiving radiation treatment and many have to undergo a mastectomy. Such a diagnosis also increases a woman's risk of invasive cancer in the same breast and increases the likely of getting cancer in the healthy breast. Be well!

What a wonderful woman is Ann Romney. She is unstoppable. She will get past this being the careful, elegant equestrian that she is. Ann will only get healthier-using this as an opportunity to become more educated about the healthiest possible eating strategies. She will bless many lives with her example, as she has always done.
Mitt, "we hardly knew ye"...and we are sure paying the price as a nation. Scores of people are wishing they could vote again...and differently.

Not sure, #17, if Ann can get "healthier" suffering from MS plus cancer ?
After 10 years of MS, when diagnosed late in life as Ann's was, MS turns more progressive. Both her parents died of cancer so it's definetely in her genes, and sorry I do not see Ann Romney as "healthy". Her immune system is weakened, and Mitt's year dragging her all over the country most likely did NOT help. Get real.
