Caroline Kennedy throws hat in ring

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor December 15, 2008 02:13 PM

Caroline Kennedy has decided to pursue the US Senate seat from New York being vacated by Hillary Clinton, the New York Times is reporting this afternoon.

If Governor David Paterson picks her, it would be the equivalent of substituting the most famous political dynasty in American history for a more recent version. Kennedy is the daughter of John F. Kennedy, the niece of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, and the object of Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline."

She had taken a lower public profile, but became more prominent this year as she and her uncle endorsed, then campaigned for Barack Obama, who defeated Clinton for the Democratic nomination.

Clinton, the former first lady, is giving up the seat to become secretary of state under Obama.

Are you serious???? Her only claim is that she is an assassinated president's daughter. I cannot believe that there are not dozens of qualified individuals in New York that have paid their dues and deserve genuine consideration for this post. I have great respect for the contributions that the Kennedy clan has made to public service....and know that Massachusetts has benefited in immeasurable ways from Sen Ted being our senator.....but Caroline does not deserve a pass because of who she is. What message does that send to those working in the trenches....- I hope that someone more "credentialed" steps up to the plate. New York deserves proven capability, not celebrity.

Pursue it? It's hers for the asking - and not because she has the experience or qualifications for the job. She does not.

It's hers because this is the price Ted Kennedy extracted from Obama for his endorsement. It's a Chicago-style payoff, pure and simple.

what are her qualofications? none, just part of the LSC - lucky sperm club. what a joke - i hope patterson selects a qualified candidate (republican or democrat) that has held public office and earned the right to serve the people from NY.

This isn't really the "change" that was expected. Replacing spots with relatives is called nepotism, or in this specific case, continuing with the same old guard.

What makes she think she's qualified?
She ever been a govenor of a state ( i.e. Palin )?
Her only political experience is that her father had his head blown off when she was a kid and her uncle is a Senator...that's it...off the radar for anything else.

Find someone who can do the job and not be an Obama stooge.

All we heard about in 2008 was change, change, change. And now we have another unqualified Kennedy given another spot in the US Senate. So much for change. I don't have much faith in the US Senate but can we at least have senators who have had to work for a living at least once in their lives?

Another senator by birthright. Like we need another silver spoon leader in the congress.

That's what New Yorkers need, replace one do nothing US Senator with another. As you may or may not recall, Hillary stated her first act as member of the US Senate was to eliminate the electoral college. Well, last time I checked, we are getting ready to vote for president in the electoral college again. So b based on Hillary's own words, she never accomplished her first congressional act, so she can only be considered a do nothing in the US Senate.

What a joke!!!!....Just another reason the aspect of a Governor picking a replacement Senator is horribly undemocratic and unAmerican.

Sad to see the one Kennedy with an unsullied reputation throw it away. Caroline is entering the nasty nasty world of politics I truly pity her and her family. I guess the payback for early support of Obama is in the offing. I would like to believe she could stay above it but, we all know she cannot. The recent performance of leadership in this country has been bankrupt of morallity and abysmally pathetic.

Great News. Some folks are asking about Caroline qualifications for being a Senator? How about " INTEGRITY" to start with. A lifetime of Public Service along with her family ( Good genes do matter) is not shabby either. Smart, intelligent, and filled with common sense.

For those of you who think Ms. Kennedy Schlossberg isn't qualified, she is an attorney and has had extensive involvement in helping NYC raise money for its struggling school system. She is certainly as qualified or more qualified than mostsenators who are already seated.

Caroline Kennedy is a very intelligent woman, and while she has not done anything to earn her right as a Senator for NY, if she is actually chosen, I'm sure she will do for NY what her uncle has done for MA. Say what you want about the Kennedys, they are a group of people who made their fortune illegally and galavant around this planet as though they own it, but the few who desere what they have, have made a difference. Do I think that Ted should've been thrown in jail years ago for "the incident", yes, but had that happened there would be a lot of people in MA a lot worse off... I say nepotism sucks, but good for Caroline, hopefully she'll use her power for good and not go to the Dark Side...

are you folks insane? Whether she deserves it or not is imaterial. To me it is who can do the best job for the state of NY and if their Gov thinks that because of her name she can bring home more than any other political neophyte then that is what he should do! Is Mario Cuomo's son the AG of the state better qualified because of his name? Who cares.

Ms. Kennedy is at least as qualified for the job as Sen. Clinton was when she ran for the seat. She has served the public publishing legal research on privacy, and raising millions for NY City schools. In addition, she has lived in New York most of her life, and with her high profile would likely be able to direct lots of resources back to her home state...and raise enough $ for the two elections she will have to run.

Lastly, everyone should get their facts straight...her appointment would be solely at the discretion of Gov. Paterson, and has nothing to do with President Elect Obama or her Uncle Ted.

Ms Kennedy: She was born in priviledge but raised through the tragedies of losing her father, uncle, mother and brother, all very public events and she was confident and graceful. She is a lawyer, a capable leader in her many civic pursuits and a great writer. Read her book on the constitution it makes you feel proud to be an American. She has spent most of her life in New York and due to the dynasty connection can pick up the phone and talk to almost any expert with whom she wishes to speak; that alone is a great asset in a leader. I am very happy to see her run.

Caroline Kennedy is qualified for the job by virtue of her education and outstanding public service. She understands the sacrifices and challenges ahead. If she is half as committed and successful as Ted Kennedy has been in the Senate, we are all the better for it. People should explore Kennedy's senate legislations (45 years) and learn to separate the personal stuff from the professional.

Hey, Obama=Corruption and Chris....
If Ted was so eager to see Caroline in a Senate seat, why didn't he back HILLARY, and be sure she'd be gone. What you are saying is, that Ted backed Obama, made him promise to give Hillary a post in his cabinet, took the chance that Hillary wouldn't refuse, and then made Obama promise to make a call to Patterson on Obama's behalf? Give me a break.
Barack Obama was accused during the campaign of not having enough experience to be President and then got elected. I say "Go Caroline!" Bring us change!

The uninformed venom of these attacks on a possible appointment of Caroline Kennedy to fill the Senate seat vacated by Mrs. Clinton is shocking. Both her father and uncle died while in public service. Her other uncle, Ted Kennedy, still serves our country valiantly although terminally ill. She is more than merely well educated, a factor generally disregarded or even vilified in yahoo discourse, but someone who played a significant role in endorsing Barack Obama's candidacy, and thereby raising the level of political discourse above the repugnant slanders ehibited in the above comments.

It disturbs me greatly that, just because another Kennedy says "I want in" that they get in. (I have no doubt that she will be chosen.) Why? Is this the American "peerage?" Nobility? The chosen? I heard a radio wag say that she did publish a book. She did, two, on the Supreme Court and Bill of Rights. (She also published children's books and a recipe book.) The two books were co-written with Ellen Alderman, a law school classmate. Trying to find something about Ellen, I found an old Charlie Rose interview with both of them. Ellen sounded much brighter. So I ask, why not Ellen Alderman? She's got as many credentials to be senator as Caroline. She wrote two books too!

Why is everyone so worried about explicit qualifications? Don't world view, morals, and general virtues count for anything? I think they do; maybe it would be nice to NOT have someone with experience in office. Go Caroline!!

Will be interesting choice, given one ex-Kennedy in-law also eyes the job. By the way, it's Patterson's choice, not Obama's. Making a deal or selling the seat as suggested is illegal. See the soon-to-be-ex-governor of Illinois. And anyway, Obama did not need Teddy to win.

And there's a lot more to Caroline than the song. She's raised millions for NYC public schools, worked for NAACP, written books defending civil liberties, and is one great lady.

To those wondering about her accomplishments -- She went to Harvard (as a legacy recipient of preferential treatment). She keeps a beautiful home (on Martha's Vineyard that she inherited). She lives on Park Avenue (by marrying a millionaire). And for many years now she's been giving away money as a philanthropist (that she never earned). Token Ambassador to England for Grandpa Joe symbolic value? Sure. But this is as good a sign as any that this revolutionary "change" will fade in time for the tried and true entitlement rights of limousine liberals.

Absolutely not!!! There has to be hundreds of more qualified people in the state of New York to fill this vacancy. New York allowed one 'carpetbagger' (HRC) to secure the senate position only on the basis of her husband having been the president.

It the residents of NY allow this to happen then they deserve to wallow in the political and financial chaos that now exists in the state.

Hello Mark,

Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg lives in NY and she has worked. Although she is a lawyer, she does not practice law. She does not have any legislative experience. Her presence in the Senate will be comparable to the situation which finds Obama in the White House. I do not think she is even remotely qualified for the position and that's how I feel about the President-elect. Maybe they'll both prove me wrong. I agree that Uncle Ted is behind this push to appoint Caroline. Will he resign his seat if CKS gets the undeserved appointment? He wants to appoint his own replacement as well. But since MA changed our laws to spite Romney, Ted can annoint but not appoint.

And just what were the qualifications of Hilary Clinton - she never lived in the state of NY until she decided that she would have a better chance running for president from NY than anywhere else. Caroline has lived in NY since she was a young child. She and her husband both are part of life in NY - raised their children etc. She did a tremendous job working with fund raising for the NY public school system. What where Hilary's qualifications other than- being married to a president.

Two thoughts on this. 1) She is not remotely qualified for this position. She has no defined leadership experience at any level of any type of organization. This is not to say that a lack of political experience should disqualify someone, and perhaps some well qualified people in industry (similar to what Bloomberg has done in becoming mayor) would be better for the position. 2) Despite her complete lack of credentials, Kennedy would be brought up to speed and a greater voice for the people of NY earlier because of the tutelage of her uncle. Interesting that nepotism is both the biggest knock and the greatest benefit of naming her.

Caroline Kennedy has been on the world wide political stage for her entire life. I am fairly certain she has gained more political expertise and polish by simple osmosis than the vast majority of people that have actually run for office. If I lived in New York, I am thinking I would much prefer someone with her education, political connections nationally and world wide, life experience, class, upbringing, spotless reputation (despite being a Kennedy and all that the perks that being a Kennedy has typically provided) and previous lack of seeking political office! She is a very intelligent woman who will learn quickly and serve the public. Isn't that the change we were looking for?

For months we have had to be subjected to liberal talking heads bashing of a female politician who has run a business, a city and a state and achieved all this based on not her name, but solely on her own merit, things that feminists used to applaud.

But Sarah Palin had the “audacity” to think outside the perceived female box set-forth by the organization called NOW and for that she was ostracized and ridiculed in spite of her great success while starting from modest means.

Now they can stop that mission and take up a new one, by coming out for Caroline Kennedy who was privileged from birth, has never run anything and has no experience in how a city or a state works, but has written pretty poetry books and attended fundraisers and luncheons.

I always liked Caroline as she never felt it was her birthright to be a politician and she could help in other ways, but with Teddy pulling the strings and misguided columnists touting her unwarranted greatness, she now wants what is deemed rightfully hers.

The more things “change”:…………

Most politicians have no experience the first time they hold office. One usually doesn't go into politics with any job experience - it is more of a desire to help as they see it - their fellow human beings on this planet. Most do not hold political science degrees which one would think might be a prerequisite. The majority have a law degree - and since Caroline has one and has also written 2 books on constitutional law - probably is better qualified then Sarah Palin - since her previous employment was as a sports announcer. One didn't really question Sarah Palin's experience it was definitely - her lack of brain power 8 8just
