Hillary wins the New Year's prize

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor December 30, 2008 10:50 AM

Hillary Clinton finished the runner-up for the Democratic presidential nomination. But she -- along with her husband -- will get the spotlight at the nation's most famous New Year's Eve event.

At 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Hillary and Bill Clinton will push the button that starts the 60-second countdown to lower the giant illuminated ball in New York's Times Square -- and usher in 2009, event organizers announced today.

Reuters reports that the US senator from New York, nominated to be secretary of state by President-elect Barack Obama, and the former president will join New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in this year's festivities.

Isn't the future Senator, Caroline Kennedy qualified to push the button?

There is one second delay in between 2008 and 2009 so they must push the button not at 11.59 but at 12.00

I'm glad Hillary is not the president-elect, but now that Obama has designated her as Secretary of State, we will still see a lot of her and Bill. I guess we have to be greatful we won't have to see them 24/7 which would have been the case if Billary become the 44th president and co-president.

When you're addicted to media attention like the Clintons are, this opportunity cannot be passed by. That "Clinton Economy" aka. "The .Com Boom" had nothing to do with Clinton, he simply took credit for other people's hard work.

Bill Clinton is not the first or possibly not the last president messing around with females other than his wife. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that George Washington may not have been sleeping alone in all of the many places that claim that "George Washington slept here"!
George was certainly an extremely good president and a capable leader and Bill Clinton certainly left the country in better shape than it was when he took office.
Thank goodness we do not know the details of the other 40 or so past presidents.

P.S. I wonder how many of the Clinton bashers have beeen 100% faithful.

Go Hillary - you can PUSH MY BUTTONS ANYTIME!!! You're still THE ONE for Me!!

I'm still an ardent fan of the Clintons. I challenge anybody, or any other politician to be under the same microscope, and let's see how squeaky clean they'd appear. Impeachment you say....what is really ludicrous is to have impeached a President for such a ridiculous set of circumstances, and furthermore, to have spent $60 million of taxpayer money to investigate the Clintons, only to have the final conclusion state: No other President has been investigated so thoroughly with so little wrongdoing found. Bill Clinton was somewhat unfortunate to have such a peaceful prosperous time during his admin....gave the opposition all the time in the world to delve into personal business from decades gone by.

Fred, I have wondered the same thing myself. Those in Glass Houses......
The Clintons are only constantly in the spotlight because the beloved media in this country PUTS THEM THERE! Blame the media if you are all so sick and tired of them. It is only fitting the Hillary be invited to this event. She is leaving her Senate seat in NY to become SoS. She was the first woman to run for POTUS and get as far as she has. WTF is the problem with Bloomberg inviting her and Bill to do this?? Were you all asleep during the 90's?? Our economy was booming, unemployment was almost non existent and there were more jobs available than at any time since the 50's. Get Over It!

I love that two of the most important figures in politics will be the ones dropping the ball! Love the Clintons!!!

Without the Clintons -we would all be bored to tears. Hillary is a brilliant , serious woman with a profound command of policy and deep concern for everyday people. Discrediting and demonizing her and her husband is an obsessive blood sport of the radical right and now the looney left. Facts be damend -
For the those with the good sense to understand greatness without the media dog barking all the time, AS does Obama - they remain critcal to Americas future.

By pushing that button tonight, the Clintons will not only be ringing in a new year but they will also be bidding farewell to a historic political year ---one that cannot adequately be summarized by historians without the mention of Hillary Rodham Clinton.

As Secretary of State, she can travel around the world and draw the mass to her knees. People around the world REALLY love the Clintons. They are like America's royal couple. Hillary is America's new Evita. Just like Eva Peron charmed the world, so will Hillary. Viva ILARIA! Long Live HILLARY! VIVA!

PS. YES! 2012! Let's do it!
