Obama first president-elect atop most admired list since 1952
A survey released the day after Christmas shouldn't go unnoticed: Gallup's annual poll of Americans' most admired people put President-elect Barack Obama by far at the top of the list.
With 32 percent, he far outpaced President Bush at 5 percent and Republican presidential candidate John McCain at 3 percent for most admired man. Obama, who also has record-high approval ratings, is the first president-elect to top the list since Dwight Eisenhower in 1952 and his share of the total is close to the 39 percent that Bush received just after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Hillary Clinton, Obama's main rival for the Democratic nomination and soon to be his secretary of state, topped the most admired woman list with 20 percent. Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, perhaps somewhat surprisingly given some of the withering criticism directed her way, finished second at 11 percent, ahead of Oprah Winfrey at 8 percent, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at 7 percent and first lady to be Michelle Obama at 3 percent.

It's amazing to me that Sarah Palin is still newsworthy material.
What a sad comment on our country's mathematical literacy when a reporter for a reputable large-city newspaper thinks that 32% is 'close' to 39%. That is still a 7 percentage point difference which is about 22% or more than 0ne-fifth of 32. Furthermore, the Gallup website states that the margin of error for the survey is 3 percentage points. Worse, the Gallup site itself uses the term 'nearly matching' to describe the gap. An even more appalling error considering the nature of Gallup's business.
I think that there is a great deal of furor about the the word close. If President elect Reagan, Bush Sr, Bush Jr, Clinton, Carter, Nixon, Kennedy were all around 25% or less than 32% would be close. If however one or more of them were above that figure than it would in fact not be close. In any case it would not have to do with the performance of Obam vs Eisenhower as much as Obama vs all the other competitors.
"... and Republican presidential candidate..." what was his name again? ;-)
Admired for what? So far he has conned the american public into voting him into office so he can impose his socialist beliefs on us. His friends include domestic terrorists, hate mongering pastors and empty headed daughters of former presidents who think they deserve to be a senator. Give me a break.
Obama hasn't done anything yet except make campaign promises, we'll see if he actually keeps any of those promises and then see how admirable he really is!
Reflecting on the fact that it was Dubya who polled 39% after 9/11, we might forgive Gallup for the 4% overstatement [39%-32%-margin of error=4%] since those who gave the man 39% had not yet watched in horror as GWB got himself stuck in WMDs in the middle of Iraq - on his way to apprehend bin-Laden in Afghanistan. And, that 4% will become 1% or 0 when corrected for the original margin of error - all of which is an apples and oranges comparison in the first place. Yes, "close" is the correct word.
hysterical...and hysteria. i think i'll wait until Obama actually does something until i decide whether he is worthy of my admiration. that would go for any republican as well.
Obama I'm sure you'll find is Americas only hope. Sarah will be the first woman president. I just wish she were a Democrat. Fresh blood, new ideas is good. Please, we need to turn Washington upside down and no more Republicans in my life time.
Oh please -- just another stupid poll meaning nothing. All people are responding to is only name recognition and biased polling. If the poll questions were asked appropriately, the most admired person might be Dr. Kervorkian.
Harry Potter's latest movie trailer, The Half Blood Prince is practically a prophecy. It speaks of an infatuation spell or such that causes the people to fall in love with someone. Barack Obama read four Harry Potter books (witchcraft and sorcery) to his young daughters. Something to think about. is this a coincidence? The spell gets broken.
He came with the promise of change and there is no change. Our solutions are found in the scriptures and are prophecy written on the United Nations' building:
Isaiah 2:4: "They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks and they shall learn war no more." It is also in Micah 4:3.
If we turned from our employment lifestyle that causes stress, pollution, disease and high health care costs, global warming, wars, energy crisis, food crisis, reoccurring financial crises, crime and social security insufficiencies, we would not need a global warming policy and energy and climate change green jobs and expensive projects to employ the people. We would not need the president-elects other promises of universal health care, social services like welfare and pre-kindergarten child care and social security would not be necessary.
We need an environment that does not break down and need to be repaired with massive amounts of tax money. Barack Obama will not prosper us by borrowing big economic stimulus packages for new forms of energy for climate protection. It would still take polluting energy to create them.
We will still be working away from families, buying insurance for autos, health and homes, buying energy from domestic suppliers, dealing with daily stress of child care, college tuition, sons in military, and conflicts over abortion, marriages, and religion. There is no change in Barack Obama. We need the change we expected, something that would make our lives easier. If he will not give it to us, he will be remembered with disdain.
