Obama moving to D.C. this weekend

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor December 31, 2008 10:04 AM

President-elect Barack Obama, who vows to change the ways of Washington, has stayed away from the nation's capital during the transition, building his Cabinet in Chicago and now vacationing in Hawaii.

But he plans to move to Washington this weekend, and hit the ground running with meetings next week on reviving the economy, his aides are now saying. That puts him in the vortex of power as the new Congress convenes on Tuesday.

Another reason for the move is that Obama's daughters, Sasha and Malia, start classes Monday at Sidwell Friends School.

Because the Blair House, the official presidential guest residence, is in use until Jan. 15, the Obamas will reportedly be staying at the historic Hay-Adams hotel, across Lafayette Park from the White House.

He will be sworn in on Jan. 20.

Honestly, who cares who pays for the hotel. He is the next President who wants to get stuff together before the current term ends. Though....he did not have a DC Senate residence? My thought he might be at the St Regis.

The blair house is probably occupied by folks who reserved it before Obama, like people that have business with the current administration.

Lied about being black....marxist? I'm glad no one posts from the fringes of sanity.

The morons of the current administration have no common sense, nor the respect for Tradition of essential cooperation, as simple as the Blair House availability. If they are trying to make a point of some sort, it is only proving them to be stupid and ignorant. President-elect is not insulted here, the American people are being subjected to planned abuses. That is further abuse and insult to all Americans. The idiots in the RNC do not get it either, further ensuring their RIP status.

Wow Deborah Gold - This article is about Obama relocating to Washington D. C. and you had to bring race into it. His mother was caucasion and his father was from Africa. Maybe... you know something about his race that everyone else doesn't? Has anyone ever accused you of not being the race that you say that you are? In the end, does it really matter>

Obama actually only had a very small DC apartment when he was a senator. And so what if the taxpayers have to pay for his hotel for a week. We're the United States of America! We can afford to pay for our leader's hotel room.

Most other presidents have just moved in on inauguration day, so who really thinks he's going to get a lot of work done in the next 2-3 weeks anyway? He wants to arrive early, then that's his problem, and he can pay for the hotel from his $800M in campaign funds raised. And why doesn't he just live whereever he was living as a U.S. Senator? Clearly he had to live someplace when the Senate was in session, and his wife and kids probably visited from time to time.

I wish people would do some research before they make false assumptions. Five days before before Inauguration Day (January 15th) is the traditional date that President elects move into the Blair House. Accordingly, there is nothing suspicious about the Blair House being unavailable until that date. FYI - the story about Blair House not being available to the Obamas until January 15th has been out for over 2 weeks.

Posted by billpearce December 31, 08 12:02 PM

He has to stay in a hotel because the Blair house has historically been the guest residence of the sitting President. If the Bush's have people there it does not matter who they are. Why should Washington bend over even further to accommodate this guy?

Stop whining about "who is in the guest residence". He's not the president, he is the president elect, he can wait just like every other president had to.

what you all fail to realize is the cycle of civilization, you all fail to remember history. a revolution is coming, maybe not in the next 5 years, but soon.

These liberal democrates and "middlist" people who think they can be inbetween left and right are undermining what made this country so great.

We are a Melting Pot. Not a Garden salad. meaning: we as americans should melt together and become one, instead everyone wants their little piece of society apart from everyone else (i.e. Black, White, Latino, etc. etc.)

all of you who don't realize what is happing, are destroying the freedom that made America, America land of the free.

Come on people he can't stay in the whitehouse yet—He'd be privy to all the shenanigans the exiting moron is pulling before vacating. Besides if he wanted to stay in the whitehouse he'd have to be a big contributor to the RNC. As for the Blair house the Bushes and Cheneys have contributors and good old boys to reward.

Apparently Obama's little DC apartment isn't big enough for all the secret service—must suck being president and losing your privacy and your way of life.

Just out of curiosity, wasn't he the candidate that said he was just like the rest of us? That he really understood us because he's been there? How many of you can afford this type of hotel? Let us hope that King Obama as president doesn't vote PRESENT over 200 times as the new Leader of the Free world. People talk about President Bush as a young man getting a DUI in his early 20's, For me I am more worried about Obama snorting COCAINE and doing HARD drugs,,, ADMITITLY in his early 20's but no one seems to want to confront that...???wonder why. President Bush has been a strong leader in that he stood with his convictions, and did what his team felt was best, NOT what his personal ratings fell at. He has strong faith, sticks to it hasn't thrown anyone under the bus, as Obama and Rev. Rice.the hater of white sssspeopl

We shouldn't judge nor question anybody like the Bush administration or the incoming Obamas administration about where they will stay.Look folks President elect Obama understand this issue I'm sure but he ran on change and that include change in our attitudes. He is not going to make a big deal about where he will stay now before he moves into the whitehouse with his family.Obama is suppose to be the one that the poor but not the rich should emulate because that was his language and style of campaigning is for the low and middle income people. So why do some of you folks now wants President elect Obama to live like a rich person while there is also an economic problem facing the nation and the world. Lets stick to the theme of CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN.

It is my prayer that GOD be with you every second, every minute, and hour throughout your reign as President. "Through HIM you can do all things"- "It is my prayer that HE make your enemies your footstool", and as our prayers increase for your success and safety, it is my prayer that your blessings create a blessing of peace, prosperity, and security to this nation and around the world. Dear GOD, we thank you and pray this is a leader who seeks "peace" and not "war" -GOD please prevail through President OBama.

Inside word has it that Obama's actual move into the White House will be further delayed because of Play Dough stains on the desk in the Oval Office and bathtub toys stuck in the presidential suite tub trap. Political hatred is a terrible waste of a human brain. Previous crabby posters above might be better off channeling their energy towards a viable NEOCON candidate for ALL the people of the USA in 2012. Gay bashing, evangelistic appeal, patriotic engrandizment, ammendment rights, and coddling the rich appears to be a dead end and having diminishing returns. Happy New Year

It is shameful of the Bush Administration and even more shameful of the guests who won't move out. The Obamas simply want to come a little early so their kids can start school. Yet again, Foon Rhee doesn't bother to post a detailed posting of mine about the fact that this was reported several weeks ago and that the Obamas are OK with it, despite the fact that there *was* a relevant URL in the comment I left. Perhaps this one will show up only because I called him out on it yet again! (Mr. Rhee, you really need to be less transparent in leaning so far to the left that you deliberately don't put up posts from anyone who slams you or the left-leaning liberal Boston Globe Democrat!)

The standard protocol for moving into Blair House for the President-Elect and his family is January 15th. Has been for YEARS. The article I had linked from MSNBC's John Yang (from Dec. 12th!) stated that the Obamas understood other scheduled events might preclude them from moving in and that they understood. So people, get the FACTS before you spout off.

The Boston Globe is just yet another of the MSM that is making a mountain out of a molehill because Their Chosen One isn't getting what they think he should automatically get. I'd bet that if this was a Republican President-Elect asking, this wouldn't even BE a story.

The Hay Adams costs about $5,000 each night. It is apparently being paid for by private donations------probably the Hollywood elite. How is it legal that Obama takes this money? Moreover, I wonder if his "middle-low" income class supporters recognize him now.......wasting $70,000 on a room for two weeks (14x $5,000) instead of giving it to the poor that got him elected!!

Has anyone who posts here ever heard of tradition not to mention laws.
A President Elect may not stay at Blair House till January 15th even if it was vacent.
A President Elect does not stay at the white house till he has taken office.
Yes, Mr Obama will be our next president and he has been granted permission to use a military jet which is used as back up to Air Force 1 which in itself is unheard of so let it go.
He is not special and rules are rules.
Who the heck else could have been elected with his terrorist and criminal connections?
He has broken enough rules throughout his entire political life.

For once let him abide by a few.
