Obama named Time's 'Person of the Year'

Posted by Jason Tuohey December 17, 2008 09:56 AM

It may come as no shock that Time magazine named Barack Obama its "Person of the Year," but the magazine's online package does offer one surprise -- previously unseen photos of the president-elect from his formative years at Occidental College.

Time's managing editor Richard Stengel said the magazine picked Obama for his constant presence in news coverage throughout the year, and for being elected president at a "periolous" and "critical" time in American history.

Obama "energized Americans in a way that we haven't seen in a long time," Stengel said on CNN today.

Time's online package provides previously unpublished photos of Obama at Occidental College, which he attended from 1979 to 1981. The black-and-white photos were taken in 1980 by Lisa Jack, an aspiring photographer at the time, and show Obama wearing a hat and striking a variety of poses. Take a look at the photos.

Obama's time at Occidental College is a largely overlooked period of his biography, but one where he began to lay the seeds for his future in public service and politics.

The Globe's Scott Helman chronicled Obama's maturation this August in an article and video on the president-elect's years at Occidental. Here's a taste:

"Much has been made in this presidential campaign, both good and bad, of Obama's Ivy League pedigree - his bachelor's degree from Columbia University, and his law degree from Harvard, where he led the prestigious Law Review. But it is during the two years Obama spent at Occidental, a small liberal arts school in Los Angeles, that he started on the path that has led to the Democratic presidential nomination."

I know its only 2008, but Time Magazine should already declare Obama "Person of the Century". There is no way that anyone in the next 92 years will come close to the change and hope that Obama has given us in his campaign speeches.

I work at a liberal arts college on the west coast and this is exactly what I hope for when I work with and mentor students. Although I attended UMass-Lowell and studied engineering, I've come to see the value of a liberal arts education that broadens and deepens the minds of not only young people but administrators like myself. Occidental and other liberal arts colleges should be proud of the good work they are doing.

Well deserved. I mean, anyone who can fool millions of Americans in thinking that he will make a difference should win! I look forward to the day that he can get through an entire sentence without saying "Ummmmm". Lots to look forward to!

I can't believe all of the right wing anti-American sentiments you people are regurgitating about our AMERICAN person of the year. You people ought to be ashamed of yourselves for the way you are bashing America and especially Obama. He is person of the year. He is going to be your president wether you like it or not. You must stand behind him 100% to show you love America. If not, then you hate America and you all should move to Iraq since you love being there so much.

HOW CAN YOU SAY HE HAS NOT ACCOMPLISHED ANYTHING?? BARACK OBAMA IS THE 44th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IF THAT'S NOT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT THEN WHAT IS???

Are you kidding me? Not accompliced anything? Not only is he well educated he is a great husband and father. This itself is an accomplishment. He has managed to lead this nation on the road of hope. He has gotten our young people excited about this country. Something that died in the last 8 years. He has gotten all of us; wheather you voted for him or not; to take notice and to have a voice. Not only that !he is our president. Agree or not he desirves everybodies respect. Oh, did I mention he is the first african american president!! That is BIG!!! He has already changed this world for the better. I look forward to the next four years.

In response to their celebratory "Person of the Year", I canceled my Time Magazine Subscription. He's captured the cover of the weekly news magazine plenty already; he has been predominately featured on the cover of Time all year. I don't need another Obama cover. If Time wanted to make him "Person of the Year" in the coming years after he's been in office and demonstrated he can effectively and capably lead this country, I would be fine with their decision then. Presidents are often chosen to be "Person of the Year", while serving in the demanding position. But, he's not even officially in office, yet. So, as they devote yet another magazine tribute to Obama, canceling my subscription was a no-brainer.
It's about Time!

I really enjoy the ignorance of people who cite 'zero accomplishments'. I am not really that interested in American Politics as I am a Canadian (in a country with a good economy, good education system, etc), but even I know that Obama was a very active individual in the Illinois Senate, that he was a lecturer at Harvard and president of Harvard Law Review, that he ran for president and won and did so in a way that puts every campaign up to present to shame. So, I wonder how 'Joe Sixpack' sitting on his black leather sofa can suggest that Obama has achieved nothing? But, then I remember, the USA is a country with a third world education system (and a lot of fat people) and I realized that those of us in the developed world should take pity on people like him.

Well deserved! He has fought a good fight. Obama is a real blessing not only to USA but to the rest of the world, just like his name Barak ,means, Blessings.

In Old Testament times, the People of Israel would not speak the name of Yahweh (God) because of its sacredness to them. Given Time Magazine's "nameless" 2008 Person of The Year cover, it would seem that they accord Mr. Obama's name such similar sanctity, This, to me, just feeds the whole notion that the so-called mainstream media views Mr. Obama as some sort of "messianic figure."
