Palestinian supporters try to give letter to Obama

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor December 29, 2008 06:27 PM

As President-elect Barack Obama went to play golf today with friends while vacationing in Hawaii, a small group tried -- but failed -- to give him a letter supporting the Palestinian cause.

According to the press pool report, a couple from California and a Honolulu man approached the security checkpoint set up by the Secret Service and Honolulu police and asked if they could give a box and letter to Obama, who has carefully said it is up to President Bush to respond to the Israeli assault in Gaza in retaliation for rocket attacks.

Bush has blamed Hamas, which controls Gaza, and during a trip to during the campaign to an Israeli city that is a frequent target, Obama said he sympathized with residents who deal with rocket attacks.

After the Secret Service refused to take the box, Fred Shepherd of Greenbae, Calif., told reporters that it contained informational DVDs about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

“I don’t think he’s taking a vacation, he’s preparing to be the next President,” Robert Steiver, the local man, told reporters. “I’m deathly afraid he’ll continue the failed policies of the Bush administration. I’ve been suffering with the Palestinians for years.”

“This gift of films is offered in hope that you will take the time to view them and that you will gain an insight as to why the Palestinians have been fighting for their land, pride and children for over 100 years. Today, one of Israel’s major newspapers, Ha’aretz, has condemned Israel’s slaughter of Palestinian men, women and children and in no uncertain terms: Israel is and has been committing war crimes. We look forward to your presidency…more than any other in our lifetime. Best wishes to you and your daughters. Thank you. Warm regards,” the letter read, according to the pool report.

Obama should publicly denounce Israel's excessive and immoral attack on the Palestinian people of Gaza. He should speak out against Israel's collective punishment on the Palestinian people and approach the Palestinian-Israeli issue on a even handed manner because otherwise, it would only fuel anti-American sentiment and give extremism a greater voice. Indeed, according to government officials the 9/11 attackers were motivated by the Palestinian issue. Clearly, our next president should support a resolution to the conflict that would take into account the rights of ALL parties involved in this matter - not just Israel's.

I really wish our government would realize that loyal Americans wish our government would stop giving unconditional support to Israel. We do support Israel but not unconditionally. It's time the United States joined the world in sending a message to Israel that this is unacceptable. Nothing is going to change in the Middle East until the United States begins to pressure Israel to change it's tactics. We want peace in Israel and peace in the middle east. Anglo-saxon Americans whose families have been in the United States for many generations feel this way, yet we fear to demonstrate. It's sad that in the United States of American citiizens fear speaking up because we might be accused of being supporters of terrorists when nothing could be further from the truth! I pray Obama understands that the American people are not blindly supporting Israel. We voted him into office because we believed he would view things in the middle east differently. He needs to find a way to bring peace to the middle east while protecting both the jewish and the muslim states.

Yes Mr Obama, we are outraged that you are allowing the Israelis to fight back. We should be allowed to shoot at them but they are not supposed to shoot back at least untill we get our women and children safely to the rocket launching sites.

This will be Obama's biggest foreign policy challenge. If he continues the unqualified support for Israel that defined his predecessors, violence will continue to escalate. Bush mouthed "two state solution" for 8 years but did squat. Hopefully Obama can get it done.

Israel was created out of thin air, which then ethnically cleaned its neighborhoods and homes of Palestinians. Forcing them into refugee camps and treating the entire population as prisoners.

Israel should be humble, understanding and admit publicly that Palestine has a right to exist. Perhaps then, young Palestinians without hope would turn from Hamas.

I hope that Obama will get agreement from the govt of Gaza and from the govt of Israel to scrupulously comply with the Geneva Conventions during their conflict. Hamas is a political organization that controls the Gaza, by election. Even so, we can't suppose that each person in Gaza agrees with Hamas when soldiers loyal to Hamas shoot rockets into Israeli cities. When the govt of Israel attacks the general population of Gaza, in retaliation for an attack by the govt of Gaza, they harm people who didn't harm them, and they don't necessarily achieve their objective of retaliating against the govt of Gaza. Attacking civilians in lieu of attacking govt forces is collective punishment, which the Geneva Conventions forbid.

OBAMA WILL BE TESTED
Biden is correct, some foreign leader is going to try the steel of Obama, but which foreign leader will it be? Will it be Russia, Iran, China, or North Korea? None of the above. It will be Israel. The forces of evil have already raised its ugly head. What Obama wanted to do with world diplomacy, re-establishing the credibility of the US especially in the Muslim world, Israel is making that extremely difficult. President Bush has already blamed the victims (Gaza) and justified the perpetrators (Israel) for the violence in Gaza. That is the same as a woman being brutally rape and the judge arrest the woman and blames her for allowing the rapist to rape her. The people of Gaza are being killed with American made and American donated F-16 fighter jets, GPS-guided GBU-39 smart bombs, and Tanks.

Why is it that every time Israel raid Gaza, Ramallah, Hebron, or Lebanon , the US suffer? It was the unbalance America foreign policy in the Middle East that caused 911 and led the US into the Iraq war. According to Bush advisor Philip Zelikow

“the IRAQ war was launched to protect Israel.” This unbalance policy has also caused the US to lose its credibility and positive standing in the World as well as thousands of lives. Is America going to allow Israeli politicians and American Zionist Lobbyists to continue to put the American people in harms way? Yes, Muslims worldwide will continue to say “no justice no peace” Christians worldwide should also cry out and condemn the actions of Israel. When will the US foreign policy in the Middle East be fair and balance? When are the American politicians going to say enough is enough? Will Obama be fair and balance? Or will Obama be controlled by AIPAC and the Jewish lobby?

Israel is an organize democratic country minding their own everyday. But when all of a sudden rockets are fire into Israel and killing innocent civilians that's what I called picking a fight by Hamas.
