Still questions for Obama on Senate seat for sale, Republicans say

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor December 15, 2008 02:53 PM

The chief federal prosecutor on the case took pains to say that there's no evidence of any wrongdoing by President-elect Barack Obama in the corruption scandal enveloping Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.

Obama, himself, says categorically that he never talked to Blagojevich over filling the US Senate seat that he vacated and that his staff was not involved in any deal-making with the governor or his staff.

Today, Obama's office said it had completed a review that it says "reaffirmed" that he had no direct contact with Blagojevich or his staff and that Obama's staff did not have any "inappropriate discussions."

But it said it would not release the review's findings until Dec. 22, at the request of the US attorney's office.

Obama spokesman Dan Pfeiffer released a statement:

"At the direction of the President-elect, a review of Transition staff contacts with Governor Blagojevich and his office has been conducted and completed and is ready for release. That review affirmed the public statements of the President-elect that he had no contact with the governor or his staff, and that the President-elect's staff was not involved in inappropriate discussions with the governor or his staff over the selection of his successor as US Senator.

"Also at the President-elect's direction, Gregory Craig, counsel to the Transition, has kept the US Attorney's office informed of this fact-gathering process in order to ensure our full cooperation with the investigation.

"In the course of those discussions, the US Attorney's office requested the public release of the Transition review be deferred until the week of December 22, in order not to impede their investigation of the governor. The Transition has agreed to this revised timetable for release."

But the Republican National Committee has not been close to satisfied, saying that Obama needs to be far more forthcoming.

It's latest attempt to raise doubts is a nearly 3-minute web ad that features footage of Obama voicing support for Blagojevich during his 2002 campaign for governor. Asked whether he was working hard for him, Obama replies, "You betcha."

With the screen framed to look like a dollar bill, the ad also shows Obama's denials of any involvement in the scandal -- but also various commentators saying that he needs to be more transparent.

"Questions remain," it says on screen at the end.

The party's nominee for president, however, distanced himself from the RNC's efforts to tie Obama to the case. "With all due respect to the Republican National Committee, we should try to be working constructively together," John McCain said on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday.

"I have some confidence that all of the information will come out. It always does it seems to me," he added.

A danger sign for Obama: While national polls show that about three in four Americans approve his handling of the transition to power, only 51 percent in an ABC News/Washington Post survey released today say he has done enough to explain any discussions between his people and Blagojevich's.

Another 34 percent say Obama has not done enough, while 14 percent say they are not sure.

As if there were not enough trouble that the republicans have to go looking for it. If this is any indication of the way that the republicans are going to behave during the next congress then i say let's make sure that no republicans are elected in 2010. WE have already seen the union busting approach to dealing out the auto industry Let's hope that there are no republicans who are going to lose their jobs because of this nonsense.
Enough is enough Let;s get to business instead of this mightier than thou , let's find the dirt on Obama that keeps on going. After yesterday's shoe throwing event in Iraq, the re\publicans ought to be dealing with the crap at the White house for the lst 8 years

When are the republicans going to realize their party is all but dead? When the republicans recruited Reagan it was the beginning of the end for the party. We are now seeing exactly what the republicans (including Bill Clinton) have caused.

Message to the Repubicans:

Get to work. Now.

"Rasing Doubts" - is just another way of saying that you think this is more important than getting to work on even one of the top 10 national crisis we as a nation now face. More deflection from our real problems.

The fact that Republicans even had the time to produce another media piece - 3 minutes long as a matter of fact - says that you are spending alot time and cash on more right wing spin. If you have questions, lets hear em , and move on. We are tired of spin, tired of attack, tired of all the old schtick of the last 8 years. Evolve or lose your relevancy. BTW, you are barely clinging to relevancy... is sticking to all this old stuff really wise?

WHEN WILL YOU LEARN THAT WE NEED TO SEE SOME GOVERNMENT RESULTS, NOT ANOTHER MEDIA ATTACK PIECE ! SHEESH! WILL YOU GUYS EVER LEARN????

GET TO WORK !!!!!! NOW!~

The want more "forthcoming" than, "not involved in any deal making with the Governor or anyone on his staff". How exactly does someone become "forthcoming" about something they weren't involved with?

One would think that with the country in 2 wars and on the verge of economic collapse, the Republicans would be more concerned with trying to work with the President-Elect to fix the problems facing the country than trying to smear the president. At what point do Republicans start caring about the country?

Why is the RNC still making web-ads? Isn't the election over. Why does Obama need to answer to the RNC?

The Republicans have much bigger problems they should be dealing with, like how to fix the mess they've made of our country...

It is pathetic that the Republicans "just don't get it", as Obama said in his campaign in response to McCain and Palin's smear campaign. The American public is tired of the old Rove ad hominem (attack the person if you can't attack the issue) type of politics. If they ever want to be a viable party again, they need to stick to the issues and learn to engage in honest debate, rather than character assassination.

Of course there are unanswered "questions" by the RNC, and there will be for as long as a Democrat is in the White House.

The real questions they should be asking are why their party support is in the toilet and why they've gone from controlling the Senate, House, and Presidency to controlling nothing in just two short years.

Perhaps they should look in the mirror while they're asking these questions.

The Republicans don't have sense to comprehend that that type of politics is in the past. can't they take a lesson from Mccain on his appearance on this week with GS?They are going to continue with the same mess looking for sleaze tarher than looking out for the good of the country and heaven help us if we allow them back in the majority we might end up in a deeper cesspit than we are in now because taht is the only place for sleeze and SH- -,. If Duncan is the best they can do for chairman of the party well let them keep on braying.

Republican are so full of it! And the thing that they don't seem to get is that people are tired of this type of politics. We need to be working together not finding every excuse to throw a knife into the back of the President elect. But keep on doing business as usual Republican's. I'm going to be glad to see you go!!

Yeah - I'm from Illinois... I did not vote for BO because I knew that he had to have his hands somewhere in the sticky pot known as Illinois politics. We've had 4 out of our last 6 governors indicted, 3 directly for crimes committed in office. We've had numerous politicians under investigation and so much graft and corruption that there is realistically NO WAY that someone can jump up that quickly without (a) owing some favors and (b) having some unsavory things sitting behind him. But, let's all sit around and sing campfire songs because he is bringing change, right? Riiiiiight...

I think every body has a right to know what kind of man and his staff are going to be running the country. If he is as Klein as he said he is he has nothing to worry about. My own personal opinion (for what it's worth) is you can't walk through a sewer for most of your adult life and come out smelling like a rose. A lot of his closes friends have already fallen. Before you chastise the RNC See what the investigation comes up with.

So now we learn that Obama sent Emmanuel to talk with Blago, after Obama claimed that he had no contact with Blago, and that he " didn't know" what contacts his staff had with Blago. Obama is a liar, and liars usually lie in order to hide something.

I have a question - Why isn' t the media asking these questions?

It's time for a special prosecutor to look into this.

Normal political practice would suggest that Obama or advisors should consult with Blago. They should make their preferences known. They would be expected to have to give something in return. Why did the Obama team fail to respond for quickly? They need to learn to trust that people are not so stupid as to expect politicians not to make deals with each other. I doubt Obama did anything wrong. While what Blago did is not normal politics nothing suggests that Obama was not acting as expected.

I tried to tell people about 0bama's long record of corruption in his short political career, but they had already drunk too much koolaid. As for McCain's reaction, now you know why he lost. He refused to attack 0bama on legitimate areas like 0bama's corrupt record, or his association with racial separtist, anti-American preacher Wright. Oh well.

Corruption is the #1 problem with our government. 0bama is up to his neck in it, and his supporters are willing to look the other way. Depressing.

The Republicans need to accept their losses and move forward. What's an attack ad going to do for them at this stage of the game? Nothing. Move on, find some new leadership, and kindly part ways from the religious crazies. Returning to roots is the only way the Repubs have a shot at winning anything, ever again.

Republicans do not need to worry about "dividing the country". Give it some time and Democrats will do that all on their own. But we are still a free country and with something hitting so close to home have the right to ask what BO new and when he new it and if anyone from his new administration is involved. And if there is nothing - then great, we have a real clean president elect and real clean administration.

Let me get this straight. The Republicans are asking questions. You people get your partisan panties in a bunch over it. For the last eight years all I heard was George W. Bush blamed for everything from an invasion from Latin America to boy bands, yet when someone questions your Chosen One, you can't handle it?

Grow the F up. Nobody accused the Chosen One of anything wrong but its entirely appropriate to ask a LOT of questions when his former Senate seat practically ends up on Ebay.

Posted by Angela B December 15, 08 12:54 PM

I am grown up.

If a federal prosecutor, appointed by a republican, states that at the end of the investigation there is no evidence of someone's involvement in the matter, odds are all the questions have already been asked, and answered.

Fitzgerald has a reputation for being agressive and thorough, if there was anything linking Obama to the sale of the seat it would have come out.

What has come out, straight from Blagojevich's mouth on tape and later transcribed, is that Obama's choices would not play ball.

Maybe if we could read the articles on the topic completely without playing the ideological blame game it might cut back on all the heat without light.

In my opinion, the RNC is hurting itself more than it is helping itself with this latest effort.

As for blaming Bush for the past 8 years, realistically, he just gave the media and the people so many things that were just plain wrong that it was hard not to see all the mistakes, incompetency, and corruption that went on.

Why else do you grant yourself a tentative pardon before leaving office?

Posted by WTJoyce December 15, 08 01:10 PM

And we wonder why we have such corrupt leadership?

It's OK to ask questions if you are willing to at least consider the answers given. This line of questioning is not honest. That is to say, the answers will never be accepted, unless they are what the questioner desires. The same guys making comments here about Obama's long history of corruption were touting his lack of time and experience in politics only a a few months ago. (Can't have if both ways, boys) No, my panties aren't in a knot; but I am willing to listen first and judge after.

The Republicans have nothing left but to spread hate and division like the nazis did in Germany to go from a minority party to "rulers of the western world". The repubs most legitimate thinking now is "how to we get votes from Hispanics?" No suggestion that they might help anyone, like with health care changes or better educational opportunities. Just how to get them to vote for Republicans. Why not just keep treating them as idiots, that's how you get the votes you have now?

WTJoyce, you missed the point. Thanks for playing. What part of nobody accused Obama of anything wrong did you not understand? Apparently Rahm Emmanuel DID have conversations with Gov. Blago and was less than forthcoming when asked by the media about it. By the way, it directly contradicted the official Obama response about the matter. It is neither incriminating nor innapropriate for Emmanuel to speak to Blago but there is a contradiction here that requires explaining.

So before you go ahead and respond to me next time and accuse me of playing the ideological blame game, get a clue. The only person(s) making ideological accusations here were you and the rest of the b.com know nothings.

Keith = A troll by any other name!

Yeah I'll bet you voted for Obama, just like I am a lifelong member of the AIP along with Toddster and Caribou Barbie.

By what twisted logic, does the special prosecutor statng that in no way is Obama involved, or by Balgovich voicing his contempt for Obama and his team, because he "won't give me anything other than appreciation" make Obama corrupt. Maybe if the Republicans were half as good at governing as they are at whine and smear, hey would not be in the pathetic situation they are.

So Tom should the Republicans do what the democrats have done for years promise the latinos and African Americans the world yet only deliver programs like welfare, free this and that which only keeps those folks down but it does guarantee your vote again from that person that is what the republicans need to do. I am not saying Obama did anything wrong here but when you start to look at his friend list it gets dicey and maybe that why he is so great he stays clean even when it seems alot of his friends are not. I hope he does well he promised alot of people alot of things I wish him the best and he has my support the second hetakes office.

We are about 6 weeks from Nov 4th and the Chosen One (as in “We are the ones, we’ve been waiting for~!”) is already mired in scandal. There is no Transparency in this "Administration" and certainly no Accountability. I am relieved thus far however, as I had feared that Farrakahn and Ayers would be named to Cabinet Positions.

This regime is being assembled with the most rehearsed and polished POLITICAL INSIDERS since...well since, the Clinton Admin...We should just call this Clinton III with Rahmy, Axlerood, et al including the Missus herself.

The only change coming in the next 4 years, as we chase the climate change Ghosts, will be the man on the street asking "can you spare some change?"

There is nothing to suggest Obama is in any way entangled with Blagojevich. Fitzgerald will move at his own pace as he did with the White House outing scandal. He is too smart to be involved with a light weight like the governor.

Republicans are making the most they can of this but this is Whitewater and there is no Paula Jones or Monica Lewinsky at the end of the road.

Nobody is looking at Charles Rangel. There is a scandal there though Obama is not entwined. He will go along with the House Ethics Committee and I can hardly see them doing the right thing.
