Americans' mood darker than eight years ago
As the power in Washington is transferred, a new study shows just how more down in the dumps Americans are -- and the challenge facing the new leadership -- than the last comparable transition eight years ago.
The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press reports that only 13 percent are satisfied with the direction of the country now, down from 55 percent eight years ago. That downturn is mirrored by the 7 percent who say the economy is in good or excellent condition, compared to 46 percent eight years ago.
Only 24 percent approve of President Bush's performance as he exits after eight years in office and only 11 percent believe history will judge him favorably, while 61 percent approved of Bill Clinton as he departed eight years ago and 44 percent believed he would be judged well, despite the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
And only 19 percent think Congress is doing a good job now, compared to 56 percent eight years ago.
