Florida builder first Obama inaugural winner
The first winner of the quasi-lottery for an all-expenses-paid, all-access ticket to President-elect Barack Obama's inaugural is a single working mother from Florida hit by the recession.
Michelle Obama told supporters this afternoon that Cynthia Russell, a builder from Newberry, Fla., and her guest will attend the welcome ceremony, the swearing-in, the inaugural parade, and the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball.
"I'm a single woman who has been building homes for over 18 years," Russell said in a statement provided by the Obama team. "I've supported myself and have been able to help out my mother from time to time. Now I find myself wondering how much longer I can hold on and be able to pay my bills and keep the doors open for business. Barack gives me hope. Hope that 2009 will truly bring change to Americans who find themselves in this mess with me."
Nine more winners are to be picked. The deadline is midnight Thursday to enter the lottery, by giving at least $5 to Obama's inaugural committee, though it's also possible to enter without giving money.
"Supporters like you made this historic moment possible," Michelle Obama wrote in an email.
"You gave your passion and hard work to this movement, and you brought millions of new people into the political process. Thanks to you, this campaign was open to more people than any in history, and we're counting on you to do the same for the Inauguration. You could be there to celebrate your amazing accomplishments and give a strong start to the change you fought so hard for."

News from the Washington Bureau

Hi Boston, thanks for running the article.....just one correction, I'm don't have children, just one spoiled Shih Tzu! I am thrilled to have been selected. Never in a million years would I expect to be able to be in Washington for this incredible event. It is a great time for me and all Americans.
Hey Boston,
Any idea when the following winners will be announced? I've been praying for 6 months that I could witness this historic occasion. But I don't know if I should buy a bus ticket or not! (it would be my last 20).
Waiting and hoping in NY!
Joe
