Obama could reverse abortion rule this week

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor January 19, 2009 06:50 PM

CNN is reporting that President-elect Barack Obama could pick the 36th anniversary on Thursday of the Roe v. Wade ruling legalizing abortion to reverse a Bush administration policy that bans the United States from funding international family planning groups that provide information, counseling, or referrals about abortion.

The "Mexico City policy," commonly referred to by critics as "the global gag rule," was devised by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 at a population conference in Mexico City, CNN says.

President Bill Clinton lifted the ban in January 1993 as one of his first acts as president, but President Bush reinstated it in his first executive order on the 28th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

Perhaps this VERY personal issue to a woman has no business in the annals of government? It should not have become an issue for the Supreme Court nor executive orders from any President or in trying to formulate laws in the legislature. Using money as an arm twister is unsavory at best. A very old axiom, you can't legislate morality. One groups ethics and mores can not and should not be forced on others.

Murder is Murder no matter which way you present it.

In four years decisions like this will make George Bush look like a mastermind. Obama the coward, and the old are next, so if you're over 60 watch out, once you're not worth a benefit to someone in power you'll be destroyed too. He may be God to the confused, and shameless, but some day he too will have to give an account to Almighty God!

Murder should not be forced upon the unborn...

You can't legislate morality is true, but that doesn't mean we should allow murder.

amazing how quick a Pro-Obama message gets printed.

Perhaps the order had more to do with protecting humans from the trendy genocide of today. If it is true you cannot legislate morality then what are anti-prostituion laws. 50 million human lives lost in the US without the choice of those who mattered most.

it is very sad that when many historic things are happening in this nation we still choose money and materialistic things over life. If the decision on abortion is changed then the whole point of respecting life has lost and we will need more prayers and blessings from God to overcome our sinful behavior. what is the use in safeguarding the economy when we can't safeguard the life of a human being.

My hard earned money used to murder unborn children throughout the world? How DARE he! If Americans want to support that kind of activity, they can make a charitable contribution to non-government organizations that do that kind of thing. But to force American taxpayers to support that kind of activity? It's an abomination. Or should I say an ObamaNation?

liberals are simply astounding....and hypocrites as proven by XENOPHON and his comments....liberals are fine with imposing their values on others but cry and screech when they perceive it is happening to them....unbelievable....the battle may be lost , but in the end, the truth will win out...science is proving everyday advancing forward , that abortion is the murder of a human being....many more innocents will die under this administration than the last, but ultimately, life will prevail

You're right, it probably has no place in govt, but there it is. And we have a thinking person in office who will reverse this blackmail.

Yes - a personal issue not only to the woman but also to the child she is carrying in her womb. That child is NOT part of the woman - it is a separate human being (possibly a different sex even, with a different DNA code!) that simply grows and develops in the womb - just as children grow and develop after they leave the womb. A newborn baby is as dependent on its mother for protection and nurture as a child in the womb.
How interesting to say you cannot legislate morality. Most legislation does exactly that! Morality is the basis of our legal code and government. Why else is murder punishable by life in prison? Please THINK and USE COMMON SENSE Americans!

LIfe begins at conception. Anything that attempts to deny that is immoral.

Abortion is wrong from the very start. Terminating life because of "inconveniences" is like murdering someone because they're inconvenient to you.

this is not personal issue, this is murder.

You can't legislate morality? Then why do we have laws against prostitution, drugs, and polygamy?

Plus, unlike those issues, abortion involves the destruction of a fetus. It's a little more complicated than you Planned Parenthood types try to scam America into believing.

Oh, and also, please show me how the Constitution protects a woman's right to destroy a fetus. I'd be very interested to see that clause.

Yes, But your and my money shouldn't pay for it. And your right ,the government can't legislate morality but they are determined to legislate immorality. Why would we spend our money to teach others not even americans to end the life of a fetus?
Who died and made us heath secretary of the world.

If you can't legislate morality, why is it a criminal offense to kill someone or steal something? Aren't murder and theft part of a moral code? (sarcasm ahead) I wish the government would stop pushing its ethics and mores on me and let me steal what I want. (end sarcasm)

This VERY personal issue to a woman is also a personal issue to an unborn child.

On the Monday, January 19, 2009, the ABC World News broadcast made a point to remind us that Washington was the site of the slave trade, a poignant reality given the Obama inauguration. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness being the foundational rights on which our country was formed makes the horror of slavery profoundly shameful. Likewise, is President-elect Obama's callous disregard for the right to life of innocent unborn children, as expressed by his voting record, and commitment to remove the few legal protections for the unborn gained since 1973, by signing into law the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) pending before the Democrat Congress. The killing of over 40,000,000 unborn human beings in the last 35 years is the greatest stain on the history of the United States of America, an unconscionable barbarism carried out in the most prosperous nation in the world. And the irony of a half-black, half white president furthering an international genocide that has victimized the black race far more than slavery ever did is ignored, rationalized and facilitated by the bias of the major media and a political party built on a tradition (long abandoned) of defending the defenseless.

"personal issue to a woman"

Because it is NOT a personal issue you genocidal murdering wicked soul. An unborn baby is not a "choice" he/she is a human being like you, just a smaller size. Your sick perverted propaganda will have its end one day, when this the worst genocide in the history of mankind itself is brought to an end.

A just society cannot operate on the principle of individual morality or ethics. Otherwise there would be chaos. Abortion violates the principle that no human being should be empowered with the right to take the life of another human being. It has to do with justice not belief. I can be an atheist and still believe in this principle. Obama's reversal of the ban means that taxpayers dollars including from those who are against the killing of the unborn, will be forcibly used to fund the termination of helpless babies inside the womb.

Nothing good comes from an abortion. No one wants to have one and the scars on the woman who has had one live on throughout their lives, not to mention a life that has been lost. Lets put money towards education and help to keep abortion from having to be an option to begin with, Fewer abortions? Sounds good to everyone!

And you want me to put aside any partisanship and support this president? I completely disagree with his policies against life (as he himself has stated it), but am expected to follow in lock step support? No thanks.

When it comes to Roe vs. Wade, does anyone remember that Roe later admitted that it was wrong? She even protested against abortions!

If abortion is a personal choice, then why should my taypaying dollars pay for your choice. Abortion is not a women's issue but a human issue. Just like slavery is not a black issue but a human issue.
