Obama gets to work; order on Gitmo ready

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor January 21, 2009 01:25 PM

President Obama is wasting no time making clear there's a new administration in charge.

The Associated Press is reporting that there is a draft executive order to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center, which Obama has vowed to do, within a year.

Closing the facility in Cuba "would further the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States and the interests of justice," read the draft prepared for the new president's signature, according to AP.

While some of the detainees currently held at Guantanamo would be released, others would be transferred elsewhere and later put on trial under terms to be determined. It was not known when Obama intended to issue the order, which was obtained by the AP.

Americans, however, are divided about the future of Guantanamo. In a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey conducted last week, 51 percent said the detention center should be shuttered, but 47 percent said it should continue to operate.

In his first full day in office, he is huddling later today with his economic team and separately with his war council as he breaks with the Bush administration on both domestic and foreign policy.

According to the White House press office, Obama set foot in the Oval Office for the first time as president at 8:35 a.m. and spent 10 minutes alone. He read the note left by former President Bush that was in an envelope addressed, “To: #44, From: #43."

This morning, Obama also called key leaders in the Middle East, where the Gaza crisis is front and center on his agenda.

"This morning, the President placed phone calls to four Middle Eastern leaders: President Mubarak of Egypt, Prime Minister Olmert of Israel, King Abdullah of Jordan, and President Abbas of the Palestinian Authority," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said in a statement.

"He used this opportunity on his first day in office to communicate his commitment to active engagement in pursuit of Arab-Israeli peace from the beginning of his term, and to express his hope for their continued cooperation and leadership. In the aftermath of the Gaza conflict, he emphasized his determination to work to help consolidate the ceasefire by establishing an effective anti-smuggling regime to prevent Hamas from rearming, and facilitating in partnership with the Palestinian Authority a major reconstruction effort for Palestinians in Gaza. He pledged that the United States would do its part to make these efforts successful, working closely with the international community and these partners as they fulfill their responsibilities as well. The President appreciated the spirit of partnership and warm nature of these calls."

Attending the swearing in of new White House staffers, Obama this afternoon announced a symbolic share-the-sacrifice move, freezing the pay of about 100 senior staffers making more than $100,000 a year.

In the economic crisis, "families are tightening their belts and so should Washington," he said.

He also announced he will sign an executive order on ethics to stop the revolving door between lobbyists and government, banning prior lobbyists from working in agencies they courted and barring administration officials from lobbying for 2 years after leaving. The order also prohibits gifts from lobbyists.

Obama told the staffers that they are now public servants, entrusted by the American people with reinvigorating democracy and remaking the country.

"We need to make the White House the people's house," he said.

Obama also declared that his administration will be more open and accountable, in part by living up not only to the letter but the spirit of the Freedom of Information Act.

Even when an official has the legal right to withhold a document does not mean he or she should do so, he said.

Later this afternoon, the president will be briefed on the economy by National Economic Director Lawrence Summers, budget Director Peter Orszag, White House Policy Council Director Melody Barnes, and White House coordinator of energy and climate policy Carol Browner.

The gathering on Iraq -- from which he has vowed to withdraw most US combat troops within 16 months -- will be after that, with Vice President Biden, a representative from the State Department, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, National Security Advisor General James Jones, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen, General David Petraeus, US ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker, and General Ray Odierno, the top commander in Iraq who will join via video conference.

He told ABC News Tuesday night that today he plans "a series of announcements both on domestic and on foreign policy that I think will be critical for us to act swiftly on.

"We’re not going to be able to delay -- there have been a lot of things that have been pressing. Fortunately, we’ve seen Congress immediately start working on the economic recovery package -- getting that passed and putting people back to work, that’s going to be the thing that we’re most focused on," he added.

Within hours of Obama's swearing-in Tuesday, his chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, ordered all federal agencies to stand down on any last-minute regulations sought by the Bush administration.

And Tuesday night, Obama's administration instructed federal prosecutors to seek a 120-day delay in legal proceedings against detainees at Guantanamo Bay. This morning, after defense lawyers did not oppose the move, a judge stopped the proceedings against Canadian Omar Khadr, who was captured at age 15 and is accused of murdering a US soldier with a grenade in Afghanistan.

First, before all the work, however, Obama attended the National Prayer Service this morning, a tradition for new presidents.

Rev. Sharon Watkins, the first woman to deliver the sermon at the prayer service, urged Obama to hold true to his principles and the nation's values. President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), she is also the first woman to lead a mainline Protestant denomination.

Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, Biden, and his wife Jill Biden shared a front pew with former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, who is expected to be confirmed today as Obama's secretary of state.

One day one it's already started. Time to start making the terrorists that are detained feel all warm and cozy. Let's turn Gitmo into Club Med for terrorists.

I'm thinking of starting a new business before Oblahma tears down the free market and goes all socialist on us. I would like to be able to have people by teddy bears for the poor terrorist that have been captured. I'd like to call it "Teddies for Terrorists". What do you all think ?

It won't matter that the interrogation of these terrorists might very well prevent another 9/11. The only thing that matters is that they are treated like the wonderful human beings they are and that the "messiah" is President.

9/11 - How soon we forget.

glad to see the President hitting the ground running. There's a lot to do, a huge mess left by the worst president ever. Godspeed President Obama.

The National Prayer Service is one tradition that must be abandoned. And it's ironic that the Episcopal Church, normally so committed to "diversity" and reluctant to encourage cultural consensus, seems to assert its presumed primacy with enthusiasm during the big moments. Perhaps one day we'll have a president who will politely pass on this exercise in hypocrisy.

There certainly should be tension. I had no opinion of Jill Biden before the "slip" but am now trying to decide if she's hateful or just an idiot. Yesterday's short skirt and go-go boots are making me lean towards "idiot." Either way, she needs to be muzzled. I was getting such nice warm fuzzy feelings about the Obama administration until this. As for the Clintons, I like them both a lot and think they're just plain too good for this country. I'll bet there are plenty of struggling countries that would love to have people as smart as them at the controls.

President Obama, is an eloquently tailored empty suit. No resume, no accomplishments, no experience, no original ideas, no understanding of how the economy works, no understanding of how the
world works, nothing but abstract empty rhetoric devoid of real substance.

He has no real identity. He is half-white, which he rejects. The rest of him is mostly Islam-Arabic, which he hides but is disclosed by his non-African Arabic surname and his Islamic first and middle names as a way to triply proclaim his Arabic parentage to people in Kenya. Only a small part of him is African Black from his Luo grandmother, which he
pretends he is exclusively.

What he isn't, not a genetic drop of, is 'African-American,' the descendant of enslaved Africans brought to America chained in slave ships. He hasn't a single ancestor who was a slave. Instead, his Arab ancestors were slave owners. Slave-trading was the main Arab business in East Africa for centuries until the British ended it.

Let that sink in: Obama is not the descendant of slaves, he is the descendant of slave owners. Thus he makes the perfect Liberal Messiah.

Roll up your sleeves, America, let's pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off and show the world how to lead and build, rather than oppress and destroy.

Remember 9/11 by punishing those who have harmed (or intend to harm) innocent people - but do so in a justified way, not behind closed doors, using torture as a tool of forced absolution.

Posted by Frank Patterson January 21, 09 01:02 PM

It has been documented by Amnesty International that a number of the detainees were never terrorists, but were people with minor visa violations--certainly not a torturable offense. That is, if we were a nation who tortured .. .

These people were "disappeared" without any contact for six weeks, a fact also documented. These are the tactics of a dictator like Pinochet, not a democracy which fancies itself the arbiter of fairness and human rights.

Others detained were children who have spent their teen years in a prison camp.

There is much information available on the unreliability of information obtained through torture. Unfortunately, hard information is not sought by all, but I'd certainly recommend a little reading before writing.

The only thing that's "started" is the ignorant ranting of right wing war mongers like yourself. "Let's turn Gitmo into Club Med for terrorists." The new president has vowed to close this debacle, not turn it into something else. Thinking of starting your own business before “Obama tears down the free market”? Hello, have you been paying attention to what the previous administration did to the "fee market". There's no need to tear it down, Bush policy has already crippled it. I'm not sure what your whole "Teddies for Terrorists" rant is about, but the word is "buy" not "by". How would the interrogation of the terrorist at Gitmo prevent another 9/11? 90% of those terrorist have been imprisoned since 2002. How much intelligence could they possibly provide about current plots in progress? Get it together man, you’re not coming across well.

No one has forgotten anything, "Unbelievable." But what good does it do when the trials are nothing but a farce? FIVE, count 'em, FIVE Military leaders involved in the prosecution of these (alleged) terrorists have resigned their positions because of the lack of fact and truth in these interrogations...

It may be easy for you to invoke 9/11 to support your partisanship but I don't use it so lightly. Fair trials are needed - or our moral lapse makes us no better than the rest of the "wonderful human beings" you mentioned.

Get a grip on reality - don't simply fall back on the tragedy of the 9/11 attacks to boast your partisanship. That's the true disgrace...

Unbelievable:
No-bid contracts to favorite companies, corruption and subsidies from the state to big businesses - both as bailout money for survival and as a matter of policy - does not a free-market make. You're confusing and conflating pro-big-business with pro-market.

Hey "WJD" - what did you do, Cut and Past that "empty suit" rant from all the other message boards... Give it a rest. Here's an idea - why not think for yourself instead of parroting back what the O'Reillys and Limbaughs spout incessantly?

And what difference does it make if his ancestry is African or not? I'm not sure I follow that point. Oh, wait! You're playing on the notion that Any Arab is a Threatening Arab... Well done. You've just proven to everyone that you're a clueless bigot.

You have no point whatsoever...

WJD, your comment is extremely ignorant. You're trying to tell Obama what his identity is. Thanks for insinuating that he's a slave driver because he (might) be the descendant of slave drivers. That's like saying all Germans are Nazis or all white people in America are slave drivers. It appears to me that you've got some serious resentment and anger that you're looking at a President who's a person of color. You're pathetic.

How is he hiding his surname? He has more black in him then the past 43 presidents that's what counts, ALL minorities are rejoicing. Now you want to nitpick when identity of other presidents was never a negative. How many of the past presidents were or had parents who were slave owners? Stop with the double standard. Why don't you stop hating and enjoy this historic event, you'll be the same one who will speak proudly to your grand kids that you were here to witness this. To Unbelievable...most experts have already concluded that most of the "residents" of Gitmo could never be prosecuted. The cases have been so badly screwed up by us torturing and other methods. We aren't changing anything on the ground, just acknowledging the fact. Guess it was easier to stick your head in the sand the last 7 years and now point a finger at the new guy? It was the old guy that screwed up the prosecution of terrorists. I hope we can still prosecute some, but I think history will show that most of the "residents" where just people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time, picked up by the Northern Alliance for us and we paid the Northern Alliance $...you think they really gave us terrorists...or just warm bodies for the cash?

Wow, has anyone noticed that our country is still intact, and functioning and that Bush left office quietly and peacefully.

Well, that really shows how ignorant those Demi-Dems are. They said he was a tyrant, and was not going to yield power. In other words he & Cheney were going to pull off a coup, and remain in power for ever (typical liberal emotionalistic melo-drama).

When the real-world evidence finally hits them they just blabber at the mouth, make excuses and continue on with their lies, and associated politics………………

Also, the mouthy black guy who said when “Whites do what is right” must have forgot his dementia medicine….. White just substantially helped to elect an ‘Un-Qualified’ black president. Was that not politically correct enough for him??

I'm hopeful for the 1st time in a while. By no means am I political but for once I have confidence in the administration. To the people ranting about 9/11 I say this...move on. You don't need to forget to move on but seriously not every single negative event is a result of 9/11 nor is everyone of Arabic decent a conspirator. People forget when their own cause destruction but when it comes from an outside party everyone begins to scream "To War!!" and then soldiers die because of that cry to go to war. Obama is beginning a new age, to me it's an age of hope, to others it is something else but it's something new. You can choose to think of it in a negative way because he is not a old white man then that is your choice but remember this...he is an American just like everyone else here, it's 1 of the requirements of the presidency. So you're not thinking negatively of a foreigner but of a American born man who right now has given many people in this nation something to grasp onto and believe in.

Yesterday the President took an oath to faithfully uphold the Constitution. Today he took his first step. Just because Bush used the Constitution for toilet paper doesn't mean it's the only way to govern. We don't need to abandon the ideals of our forefathers in order to prosecute terrorists. Why are you opposed to following the Geneva Convention for dealing with accused terrorists? Are you afraid it will show that Bush really had no idea how to make the nation safe, so he panicked and imprisoned anyone he thought might be dangerous?

Oh, and "Unbelieveable", no one is forgetting 9/11. We just don't understand why ignorant cynics like yourself have elevated it to the new national holiday. Maybe it's time to remember July 4.

So in the first day of office, Barack finds the most important item on his "To Do" list is not talk to his staff about the economy or anything related to that issue at all. His first item is to close Gitmo immediately and either transfer or release detainees that have called Gitmo their home for the past few years.
WOW! How is this not the #1 story on every news station and internet site, that the great Barack, leader of all who will take us into a better place than where we are today, has decided to release people that may be the world's most dangerous threats to the U.S., out of our custody. Oh, that's right, the media does not want to make headlines out of something their "Knight in Shining Armor / Media Darling" just approved, which is something that I am guessing 70% of Americans would disagree with doing.
You have to be kidding me. Now I am not one into buying this whole "Barrack is a muslim, practices muslim religion, and wants to help muslim terrorist destroy the United States and what it stands for." However, this does not help that stereotype. It does have to make you wonder, why would this be the first item on the agenda. For what reason.

If things were different and he had resentments towards his black roots and wanted to be only noted for his white heritage he won't have even been allowed to run, regardless of how good his politics were.
