Obama speaks on Roe anniversary

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor January 22, 2009 04:03 PM

President Obama issued a statement on the 36th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion in the United States.

But he did not, as some expected, issue an executive order overturning a Bush administration policy -- the so-called Mexico City rule -- that prevents US funding of foreign family planning and health groups if they provide abortion services.

The statement said:

"On the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we are reminded that this decision not only protects women’s health and reproductive freedom, but stands for a broader principle: that government should not intrude on our most private family matters. I remain committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose.

"While this is a sensitive and often divisive issue, no matter what our views, we are united in our determination to prevent unintended pregnancies, reduce the need for abortion, and support women and families in the choices they make. To accomplish these goals, we must work to find common ground to expand access to affordable contraception, accurate health information, and preventative services.

"On this anniversary, we must also recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights and opportunities as our sons: the chance to attain a world-class education; to have fulfilling careers in any industry; to be treated fairly and paid equally for their work; and to have no limits on their dreams. That is what I want for women everywhere."

37 years ago, I did not know where to turn, having been diagnosed with an unhealthy pregnancy. Denmark?? My system resolved the pregnancy, all by itself. But I will never forget the anxiety.

That would be girls everywhere except in the womb.
Mr Obama needs to contemplate the connection between the dehumanization of the Negro race that permitted racial slavery and Jim Crow, and the similar dehumanization that happened when the unborn child became the "fetus" and its murder became a state sanctioned activity.
The advancing science of microbiology has proven that each child is a genetically distinct and unique individual and irreducibly human. As a consequence, and without reference to any supernatural formulation, the destruction of that child in utero is the extinguishment of a human right to exist; which is, in any rational consideration, superior to the mother's right to not be inconvenienced by childbearing.
As we decided the planter's right to property in human chattel was inferior to the slave's right to freedom, so we must someday recognize that the child's right to life is superior to the mother's right to post conception reproductive choice.

For a very Pro-Choice individual, the statement sounds almost middle-of-the-road.

"On this anniversary, we must also recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights and opportunities as our sons", [and that is for them to be able to be as irresponsible for their actions as the boys because neither one of them should have to use a condom, and all should be allowed to experience the "joy" of experiencing the true meaning of "if it feels good, do it"!

obama remains "the one" who voted to deny babies survivinig BOTCHED ABORTIONS to ANY SUPPORTIVE MEDICAL CARE, and VOTED FOR SUCH DENIAL SEVERAL TIMES.

One wonders how he would have felt had he been such a "survivor" himself - would he still support such callous, despicable "care" then???

I also wonder if his opinion of Michele would be so "high" if SHE had chosen to practice what HE PREACHES with THEIR CHILDREN...........think that would be acceptable, barack?!

I did not vote for obamma ..to me he is a protestant black version of the irish /italian catholics who are catholic in name only! we have so many phony christians in boston. Obamma saddens me because I have been told so often that protestants read their bibles with so much more passion and understanding than catholics.. thy kingdom come in our father do we mean it when we pray it?
a kingdom of abortion on demand and gay marriage is not god's kingdom and we know this! we know anal sex hurts, causes tears, and is not normal! let us pray for revival!

What a disappointment that Obama did not overturn the gag rule. Overseas clinics that receive money from the US should be able to provide abortion services and counseling.

A President who listens and respects everyone's views, no matter how wide apart they are. I think that's what's called being a President for all the people. I'm a very left leaning, progressive registered Democrat. I'm an older white woman. This does not disappoint me, it encourages me.
I would love to see a time where we get back to not hating each other for differing views. The hate I see on these boards is totally fightening.

To commemorate the Pro-Life cause today, a lone male supporter crashed his pick-up truck into a St. Paul, MN Planned Parenthood front door. Up over the sidewalk, into the door and then parked on the sidewalk waiting for police. When the police arrived they stated that the driver was chanting on the sidewalk with a cross raised above his head. Another sad event and good reason to keep Roe v Wade intact. Unwelcome intrusions into lives and lifestyles is contrary to individuals pursuit of happiness. Stay out of my life...I'll stay out of yours. Go to church, express your beliefs to your confidants, leave me out of your introspect of personal faith.

Is it too early to say he is not only a disappointment and showing his inexperience but he may be already the worst President in terms of 48 hours on the job.
It is amazing that people actually voted for him. He looks so unpresidential.

Obama says "that government should not intrude into our private lives".

He just wants it to intrude into every other part of our lives.

When his daughters get older, he mind as well tell them, "Don't worry, sleep w/ whomever you want, use contraceptives if you want, and if you get pregnant, just abort it".

Contraceptives are WIDELY available because every gas station down the street sells them. If they really reduce unplanned pregnancies, why are people still getting abortions? Let's face it, promoting contraceptives/abortion essentially promotes the availability of sex. Are people really responsible to use them? No. If they are, we woudln't have an issue. Imagine what would happen if contraceptives are banned from this country. Would people still be sleeping around as much? I don't think so.

I am a Catholic who believes in the right to life for all human being's, whether they are in the womb or in a assisted living facility because of illness or old age...if we do not stop abortion or euthenasia we are just plain murderer"s....dress it up all you want make excuses all you want to keep this inhuman practice, we will have to answer to a Higher Power...but maybe if we STOP these practices,,,we will be able to turn all this chaos around and become more loving toward one another all over this God given world....let's teach our woman & men that just carrying a baby for 9 month's and letting it be adopted to a family is the better way to go.........

Hugh (#2), very well said.

The pro-choice mentality is so faulty. Is the killing an innocent human being perfectably acceptable simply by the act of choosing to do it? Wake up people! The taking of an innocent human life regardless of its location (in the womb or out) is NOT a 'private' matter. People like to hide behind that rhetoric and faulty thinking as well. Abortion kills and innocent human person. It's pretty simple. To deny this is to deny common sense, science, reason, and good philosophy.

what a shameful display coming from a man who surely understands the travesty of discrimination. How can a black man, and of mixed race at that, so passionately embrace such horrendous discrimination. The rejection of the fundamental principle of life is unacceptable. Tell me Mr. Obama, how exactly does one pursue "liberty and...happiness" when they are never allowed a chance at life, at the expense of someone else's perceived happiness. Add to this the utter shamelesness in his comments of giving women every opportunity a man has. How sexist can you be? Congratulations women, you have a president who seems to believe your only diginity exists in your ability to act just like a man. What an absolute insult to true equality, and to the treausing of feminity to say your femininity is a curse. Shame on you Mr. President. You continue to hold women down.

It is obvious that Prez. Obama is "beholden" to the abortion industry. No surprise here. As the Democrat Party's candidate , Obama said he would do this. The "Culture of Death" will march on, that is the Democrat's mantra. While America slept, for the last 36years, there have been 54, million abortions sanctioned by our Supreme Court with Bad Law, Roe v. Wade. As we speak there are Appox .4,000 abortions in America everyday.
Margaret Sanger must be very proud of her Planned Parenthood cult worshipers, The Democrat Party's Ideology and their leaders' including Prez Obama. are among the largest "Block of Worshipers" ,in America. The Democrat Party have been promoting her and her associates ideology through the "Abortion Industry". It is called the "Culture of Death". For those who do not know who Margaret Sanger was, she was the Founder of Planned Parenthood. She started the American Birth Control League in 1926, before her organization became Planned Parent hood. One of her colleagues Lothrop Stoddard, a Harvard graduate described the eugenic practices of the Third Reich as scientific and humanitarian. Another associate and board member for her group, spoke of purifing America's human breeding stock .
The Deomocrat Party are worshipers and active promotors and supporter of the ideology of Margaret Sanger . Margaret (Planned Parenthood Founder) spoke of sterilizing those she designated as unfit. She founded Planned Parenthood to purge America from bad strains. First of all she considered African Americans unfit and said the bad strains were the shiftless, ignorant, and wothless class of the antisocial whites of the South. I guess the American elite with their "Delusional Relativism" cannot seem to cut their umbilical cord with Planned Parenthood's Ideology. Prez Obama's statement: "to find common ground" comes directly from the insidious Planned Parenthood's playbook.
The only common ground I can agree with is :Reverse Roe v. Wade it is Bad Law.
Our constitution guarantees Life, Liberty, and Happiness for every human -being
Note: Life comes first! Justice for all
