On inauguration eve, Obama stresses service

WASHINGTON -- Against an emotional backdrop of high promise, deep despair, and extraordinary expectations, Barack Obama will become the nation's 44th president Tuesday, completing his historic quest for the White House and beginning the daunting task of leading a nation wounded by wars abroad and economic crisis at home.

On the eve of his inauguration, Obama spent today doing what he is encouraging all Americans to do: national service. In the morning, the president-elect made an unscheduled stop at Walter Reed Medical Center to visit with 14 veterans injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. Later, he toured a Capitol Hill shelter for homeless and runaway teens, chatting with volunteers and helping paint walls, and continued to a local high school to greet more than 300 volunteers sending letters and video messages of support to troops overseas.

And while hundreds of thousands of supporters thronged to Washington on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to celebrate the swearing-in of the country's first African-American president, Obama kept the day's focus not on the racial breakthrough of his election, but on King's dedication to service.

"Everybody can be great because everybody can serve,'' Obama said, quoting the slain civil rights leader as he rolled Laguna Blue paint on the walls of Sasha Bruce House.

While his administration intends to work hard to help Americans in need, Obama said, "Don’t underestimate the power for people to pull together and to accomplish amazing things."

"These young people have huge potential that right now is not being tapped, and given the crisis that we’re in and the hardships that so many people are going through, we can't allow any idle hands," he added. "Everybody's got to be involved. Everybody's going to have to pitch in, and I think the American people are ready for that.''

Obama is expected to make public service and sacrifice a strong theme of his inaugural address just after noon Tuesday, calling on all Americans to work together to solve the nation's problems. Today, thousands of people around the country heeded Obama's call for a day of service.

"I can't do it by myself. Michelle can't do it by herself. Government can only do so much,'' Obama told military families, students and other volunteers at Calvin Coolidge High School in northwest Washington.

Despite Obama's sober tone, Washington was giddy with excitement today. Obama supporters of all races celebrated the extraordinary success of a 47-year-old man born to a white mother from Kansas and a black father from Kenya he barely knew, then after just three years in the US Senate, sounded the themes of hope and change to defeat well-funded opponents and capture the presidency.

Crowds braved the cold and rare snow to wander about the National Mall, waving mittened hands at TV cameras in jubilation. The Washington mass transit system sold farecards with an image of Obama's face on them, and local shopkeepers in this heavily-Democratic city taped Obama signs to their windows.

Security was tightening as Washington readied for an expected crowd of at least 1 million -- and perhaps 2 million -- at the Mall and along the Pennsylvania Avenue parade route Tuesday. Bridges from the capital to Virginia will be closed, and some 3.5 square miles of downtown Washington will be off-limits to traffic.

Parties began over the weekend, and will culminate in a series of 10 official inaugural balls and numerous unofficial fetes Tuesday night.

"A lot of people in this country see Barack Obama as the embodiment of their dream,'' said Jim Demers, a Manchester, N.H.-based political activist who was an early Obama supporter and traveled to Washington for the victory celebrations and inauguration.

"This was a guy who wasn't supposed to win. He wasn't supposed to win the nomination, let alone the presidency. He shattered a big glass ceiling. It truly does give them hope and desire to pursue their dreams as well,'' Demers said.

Eventually, every race is going to want their favorite people to have a day. And, who can blame them? Pretty soon, business will not be able to afford all of these imposed holidays. Why don't we do what we've done to the Christmas holiday? More specifically, we can stuff all of favorite people into one single day and call it- Diversity Day...or something.

After all, King could not have done what we're told he did, unless other great people set the table for him. Martin Luther made Martin Luther King possible. Pretty soon, we're going to run out of days!

In the same way we now have a Holiday Party, we can have a Diversity Party. Then, no one is left out; our calendars are not full.

Is it me or does anyone else out there resent Obama and cronies telling Americans to get out there and volunteer likes a new trendy concept.? I have volunteered for nonprofit and community groups my entire life. I have done it quietly because it I believe in it, not as a publicity stunt. So the Obamas will volunteer in a soup kitchen for a day for a photo op. How special. They're multimillionaires with "staff" who take care of the cooking, cleaning and drudgery of day to day life. They should have been volunteering all along.

A man who sat in an anti American, anti White church for 20 years is going to preach to me? Save it Barry!

My service will be to hold Obama's feet to the fire to ensure that he fulfills his promises to the LGBT community. The blackout of Bishop Robinson in the television coverage of "We Are One" was very disappointing.

Did he thank our troops who provide a service to every American every day? Just curious.

Personal accountability for ones own well being and success begins in only 1,460 days.
Have they started this gentleman’s bust on Mt. Rushmore yet? He speaks a good game but like the rest, is surrounded by corruption. The only difference is that people are willing to turn a blind eye to him as they would never do to others of the same qualifications.

Another deep and insightful (LOL) puff piece from the left-wing Globe. Blog quickly. If Obumma gets too many negatives, the Globe will take down the Blog. It is rare the Globe allows any blogging for fear the curtain might be pulled back on the Media Oz that is Obama.

Geez... everyone is so negative... relax! Obama has failed in everyone's eyes already, and he hasn't even been in office! History will show that he turned this country around in the face of historic economic troubles... and then you'll all look like idiots.

And here i was thinking that community service was about personally wanting to serve your community. Has he set a national bedtime yet?

"Change"..... Could somebody please explain to me how this man managed to win an election by making a complately empty "promise"?

He is a Junior senator from the ONLY state more corrupt than Massachusetts, has no experience AT ALL, and won an election because of fickle details. People claim that he was a "good speaker" and he was able to "connect well with the people"... Hitler had those qualities. Hitler also promised "change"... (Please note that I am not comparing Obama to Hitler, simply likening Obama supporters to Hitler supporters in the 30's/40's). This man does not deserve to be president.

I pray that Mr. Obama can lead this country with wisdom and bipartisanship. But quite frankly, this man scares me. He's a socialist no matter how you toss the coin. And just as a side note here, I wonder how much of his multi millions he's spreading to his fellow man.

What an elitist poser. Using the same soldiers he did everything but spit on during the campaign as a backdrop for his coming Presidency. I know you liberal tarts at the Globe will not post this, but it needs to be written anyway.

Thank you President Obama and Michelle. The "me" generation is over. From your early youth, you have demonstrated to all of us a life of service, of giving back to community. You are an inspiration to our Nation, young and old.

I never thought I would live long enough to see this day.

Thank you for honoring Martin Luther King, Jr's great contribution to our country. He is one of our Nation's true patriots.

To swimmer kennedy, do you think you may actually be expressing white privilege uncertainty, and anxiety about our fading racist institutions with resentfulness and anger? We all (our Nation's people), no matter what color or gender preference have suffered from these overt and subtle practices from our early beginnings.

I assume you were referring to Rev Wright's impassioned sermon, but I'm sure you never heard it in its entirety or thoroughly read the passages and stories from the Judaic/Christian Text (Bible) he was referring to when warning his
Congregation of the consequences that have been brought by God upon others that could also fall upon our American Empire because of its follies.
I do not think Pastor Wright is either anti American or is a Shepard of an anti white church. I believe he cares and cares deeply.
