Panel recommends Blagojevich impeachment
A special state House committee in Illinois recommended tonight that Governor Rod Blagojevich be impeached for abuse of power.
"The citizens of this state must have confidence that their governor will faithfully serve the people and put their interests before his own," the 21-member committee wrote in a draft report released this morning. "It is with profound regret that the committee finds that our current governor has not done so."
The full House could act as soon as Friday. If it votes for impeachment, Blagojevich faces a trial in the state Senate and could be removed from office.
Blagojevich was arrested last month on federal corruption charges, including trying to barter President-elect Barack Obama's former Senate seat.
