Drinking with the enemy

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor February 10, 2009 10:24 AM

It could be the most watched political drink since Hillary Clinton was throwing back shots before the Pennsylvania and Indiana primaries last spring.

President Obama has accepted an invitation for a beer from conservative Fox News Channel commentator Sean Hannity, part of what passes for the loyal opposition these days.

Asked about the invite at a town hall meeting in Indiana on Monday, Obama professed ignorance, but added: "I'm always good for a beer."

This morning on Fox, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs elaborated: “We should definitely do it in a public place because nobody would believe it actually happened if we just did it here."

“Get a six pack of Budweiser and we’ll meet Hannity anywhere he wants to go,” Gibbs added.

Maybe Obama will be forced to answer some real questions! Hannity will eat him for lunch! (and wash him down with beer, apparently)

"part of what passes for the loyal opposition these days".

Well, I guess we know who Foon Rhee voted for.

Sean Hannity is TV commentator. That's all. Tens of millions of other Americans oppose many of Obama's policies because they don't make sense and can't withstand any objective analysis. The closer you look the scarier they get. Hannity and the rest of the "loyal opposition" want to look close while Democrats don't.

Good for Obama if he has a beer with Hannity. He's an American too. They may both learn something.

Remember, as Democrats reminded us of during the Bush years, Dissent is the highest form of patriotism. From everything I've seen from Obama so far, I'm a dissenter.

Why bother talking to an idiot like Hannity. Anyone associated with Faux news is a joke.

You know I have to say that this is REALLY unpresidential for any President, no matter who he is, to be that concerned with what some talking head is saying about him.....Would Obama please accept the fact that not EVERYONE is going to agree with him on his policies, not everyone believes that he is making good decisions. Why does he have to be so thin skinned as to have mentioned Hannity and Limbaugh over and over? If he can't stand them so much then why is he giving them so much importance????

Perhaps they could have a beer that is brewed in and owned by an American brewer like Samuel Adams!

Posted by Bleacher Bum February 10, 09 11:46 AM

Try getting a 6-pack of a more American beer like Samuel Adams. Bud is now owned by InBev, a European company. Nothing wrong with that on it's own, but the President should be representing a solid American beer.

Posted by Casey February 10, 09 11:46 AM

Obama should be drinking Sam Adams since Bud is now owned by Europeans, Miller by Africans, and Coors by Canadians!

Why even give Hannity the free pub? I don't understand Obama's rationale. Hannity is a worthless mouth piece for the unwashed, angry masses. Agreeing to a beer with him will only legitimize his brand of moronitude.

Just what Americans need to see. The freaking president out drinking. He's a great campaigner, but leader he is not. One hour press conference, 13 questions. He lied about Japan blatently, but no one called him on it. The lost decade that was referenced by Mr. Obama happened because Japan tried to spend its way out of a recession. 4 trillion dollars spent that didn't work. Did anyone hear that out in Obamaland? Anyone??? Spending your way out of a recession does not work. Enjoy the coming depression. The USA is now going to be a welfare state called the USSA. The United States of Socialist America. You voted for it, now real

How about Sam Adams instead --- Bud is no longer an American entity --- would drinking Sam be too Protectionist?

I Love, Love, Love Obama......he used the word "civility" a few times in last night's speech.....and it looks like he really means it. Also, the line from the "Godfather" comes to mind......keep your friends close...but your enemies closer. When folks genuinely communicate face to face.....it breaks down posturing & stereotyping and grandstanding.... I am thrilled that he is going to do this. Hannity may never become a fan....but I'll wager that his respect for Obama (and what he is trying to accomplish) will go up measurably.

All of you high school graduates who support the high school graduate Hannity may be surprised at the skills one learns at a top flight law school including Harvard Law. Don't even compare a mediocre ideologue like Sean Hannity with the President! Get real!

Obama should draw the line somewhere. Rush and Hannity are on the other side of the line. Obama is trying to blur the line. Don't play games with these people. They hate you Obama. There is no use in trying to reason with evil. There is evil in this country and they should be dealt with accordingly. Rush and Hannity should have a beer smashed over their heads and then sent to Guantanimo.

Any bets on whether Hannity can behave himself? My bet is on his becoming (more of) a blustering buffoon. Then again, how do you talk with someone who makes up "facts" as he goes like Hannity does. Without his writers and handlers, he'll be totally lost.

It would be nice if politicians had to answer real questions with real answers. Perhaps there is a way we could get this to happen. If only there were a form of media with the responsibility to ask questions and press for answers and the power to expose those who refused to answer or who answered evasively. We could even call it the "Press!" Get it? The PRESS? Pun intended! Imagine someone trying to get away with some of the crap our politicians get away with if they actually had to answer questions from BOTH sides of the aisle.

Too much fun! So many good beer drinking places in Manhattan have closed...Hoolihan's next to Rockefeller Center would have been perfect...but it's gone...where is Hannity's studio? in NYC? Somehow it has to be in NYC not DC....maybe Brooklyn....

I am impressed that Obama has accepted this invitation. Hannity is among the most diligent and intellectual members of the media and could ask some hard questions. Typically Obama tries to avoid the issues and questions that require actual thinking. Good luck to him. I just hope that it is not all "buddy-buddy" for the press and that Hannity actually holds him accountable for his early errors and flawed recovery plan.

Hannity is going to have to respect the office and title to some degree, otherwise he will trouble waking up in the morning without some goverment office all over him for every little detail

Hannity needs to be careful for what he wishes!

This is just peculiar. I'm not an Obama voter but like many Americans, I want to see if he just happens to have the right touch to improve things. I tend to side with Hannity on most issues but don't care for his style, ego or style of argument.

I do think both guys are decent in their own way and is brillaint maneuvering on both their parts.

I don't for a second believe in this absolute FANTASY narrative that we're in some kind of "post-partisan" age. Nothing could be further from the truth. But perhaps the title of this blog gets at something wrong: Sean Hannity isn't an enemy to the President; he's an opponent. There's a difference.

But these 2 guys in a room + with cameras + the novelty of the situation = opportunitiy for both, which will make for interesting TV.

Obama is already answering "some real questions". His team hasn't been filtering his town-hall audiences or cherrypicking his speaking locations for maximum favorability. Unlike Scott's favorite former president.

And where are those showstopping protesters?

Posted by Milo Blankenstern February 10, 09 01:52 PM

*smirk* Hannity has shown himself to be a disingenuous tool - rude and abusive and not all that interested in facts, listening, or learning (and he therefore creates the same attitude in his on-air opponents). But it's great to see the President reaching out to even his most toxic opponents in an effort to raise the level of discussions about policy. Hannity won't be won over, but people will start to see Hannity's style of conversation for what it is - loud, know-nothing bullying.

Yuk. I would hope that a progressive administration has better taste than industrial swill. A nice Dogfish Head IPA from Delaware, or Wolavar's Organic from Vermont would be much more presidential. Then again, Hannity has no taste and isn't worth much more than a can of Bud Light.

It's only been a few weeks and the roof has already started to fall in on Obama. He thought his stumulus plan would fly through Congress and it hasn't. He has a majority in both houses and he can't get it through fast enough. He had to go out on the road to get support for it. That's pretty sad with the supposed support for him in the press. He will finally realize that millions of americans didn't vote for him. He feels like he got a mandate from the american people in the election because of the electoral college landslide. Unfortunately for him the popular vote was close.and that's what really counts. I didnt vote for him but I hope he succeeds. andI

Actually Bud is now owned by Belgians......Harpoon, now there's a real American beer brewed right here in Boston. Where it all began. Obama vs. the Manatee. Now there's a celebrity death match!

Good for both of them. Perhaps now Hannity will get the truth about the president's birth certificate and see what Obama is hiding; same with his college records. Where did Obama rank in his class? What were his scores throughout? Why isn't Hawaii allowed to reveal the birth certificate? Is Obama really an American citizen? Come on President Obama. Where's the transparency you talk about, or is it just another line of Democratic horse manure?
