Holder in, Daschle hanging on

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor February 2, 2009 06:44 PM

It's funny-strange how Washington works sometimes.

Going in, it looked like Eric Holder, President Obama's pick for attorney general, could face the toughest fight. But despite questions about his role in controversial pardons during the final days of the Clinton administration, he was confirmed this evening.

UPDATE: Holder is the first African American to hold the job as the nation's top law enforcement officer.

In the debate before the vote, while Democrats praised his credentials, a small group of Republicans questioned Holder's stands on gun control and the fight against terror.

Former top Senate Democrat Tom Daschle appeared to be a slam dunk as health and human services secretary. But it's his nomination that is on the precipice as he meets privately today with the Senate Finance Committee to explain failure to pay six figures in taxes.

In a letter to the committee, Daschle sought to explain how he missed paying taxes on consulting work and the use of a car service. After he was nominated by Obama, Daschle filed amended tax returns to report $128,203 in back taxes and $11,964 in interest.

"I am deeply embarrassed and disappointed by the errors that required me to amend my tax returns," he wrote in the letter. "I apologize for the errors and profoundly regret that you have had to devote time to them."

So far, his former Democratic Senate colleagues are standing by him.

Senator John F. Kerry of Massachusetts, who is on the Finance Committee, quickly issued a statement of support:

“Tom Daschle has spent nearly three decades serving the public. It is important to put his experience to work during a critical time when our nation’s healthcare system desperately needs an overhaul. I have confidence in his leadership ability," Kerry said in the statement.

“As a former member of both the House and the Senate, his knowledge of the legislative process is unmatched. He has built relationships with and is well respected by members of Congress on both sides of the aisle – necessary components to getting good legislation passed in a timely manner. Months ago, Tom personally and proactively addressed the taxes issue and took all necessary steps to correct his innocent error. I’ve known Tom Daschle for years and he is a man of great character and integrity who will do a superb job in helping us fix our healthcare system. I look forward to his speedy confirmation.”

UPDATE: This morning, the committee's chairman, Senator Max Baucus of Montana, issued a statement backing Daschle, for now.

"As indicated by news reports over the weekend, the Senate Finance Committee has been reviewing a number of issues with regard to Senator Daschle's nomination as part of our vetting process. As with every nominee, all issues raised will be considered carefully and thoroughly by the Finance Committee in the coming days. The Committee will meet this afternoon to discuss the findings of this vetting process and next steps, and I will comment further once I've had a chance to hear my fellow Senators' thoughts. We will also make public the information discovered and reviewed in the vetting process," the statement said.

"I have applauded Senator Daschle's nomination to the post of HHS Secretary, and my faith in his dedication and qualifications has only been bolstered in recent weeks by our numerous conversations about the pressing need for comprehensive health care reform. The ability to advance meaningful health reform is my top priority in confirming a Secretary of Health and Human Services, and I remain convinced that Senator Daschle would be an invaluable and expert partner in this effort. I am eager to move forward together.”

I say have all the senators and congressmen audited yearly. Bunch of crooks hiding behind "working for the public" as an excuse to screw the government out of tax dollars. Kerry and Kennedy should be at the top of the list.
Furthermore, Obama claims to be all about change. Well, why bring in these people that have Clinton era written all over them. Shame on him. George W got heat for hiring his father's crew. Where are those hecklers now?

Yes, he is embarrassed.

The rest of us are screwed.

We have a government run by crooks from top to bottom and it began in 1980, after a short break from the Nixon err.

Massive party politics paid for by corporate bosses with a sense of entitlement.

If this was a republican e.g. Senator Stevens, the media and democrats would be demanding he be prosecuted. What a double standard!

I wonder if I "forgot" to pay my taxes... would I get a seat in the all powerful gov't? One unethical politician after another... but we somehow should close our eyes any way in the best interest of the nation to "move forward"... who cares if they cheat? What ever happened to honest people? Oh, I forget, they don't play hardball enough to get elected... and smart folks don't run b/c of the same reason. It's no wonder corruption is so prominent in our gov't... but we hide it better than countries like... oh China. Yet we condemn other gov't when our leaders too... are leeches and we the people are the supplier of their greed... how much blood will we have left?

Wanted to apply for a job with the Obama team - because I voted for "change I could believe in"... But I screwed up - I paid my taxes.

If any of you paid attention to his statement you would see that this is not so simple. The big amount came because a former employer sent him an incorrect W-2. If his explanation turns out to be incorrect, that is one thing, but if it is correct, it is easy to see how these mistakes were made accidentally. Do you ever do your taxes? I know that, with the best of intentions, I have trouble figuring out what I should report and what is not reportable.

Unreal. Losers like Kennedy will block a Supreme Court nominee because of ideological views, but its ok to cheat on your taxes and be nominated to Treasury or Health and Human Services because "we're in a crisis".

Change we can believe in.

The Democratic Party , the Globe and Obama's "Hypocrisy we Can Believe In "
campaign promises. Sweet !

I have to agree with Kim, you can't open a newspaper or turn on the news these days without hearing about another politician taking a bribe, or "forgetting" to pay his taxes or in some other way bringing disgrace to his office. Of course the other senators are going to back him, they don't think it is wrong. I also like the part about "after" being nominated that he decided to 'fess up and pay.....

This is such a double standard it make me nauseous. It looks like if you among the elite that Obama deems worthy of a post, trivial stuff like paying your taxes as a US senator do not matter. Geithner skated since everyone believes he is "wicked smart", I believe that he should go to jail. And now Dashcle, you mean to tell me that there are no other qualified touchy feely guys to run HHS?
Disgusting,
I am moving to Ireland.

I see you don't accept posts criticizing the Globe or the Democratic Party. Well done.

Wow....Obama must be smarter than I thought....keep nominating tax cheats and you could fund the stimulus package with their re-files. What a disgrace

If Daschle, Geithner and etc... is what Obama has in mind for change, then it's time to pack up and move to another country. This place needs to be cleaned up.......Daschle and Geithner should be going to jail, not going to the White House.

Nothing is changing - Bush's gang was a corrupt as we've seen - and Obama is using up all his political good will for dems who dodge paying their share.

No wonder they don't realize how those of us in the bottom 80% are getting clobbered in taxes, helathcare expenses, food bills, eletricity bills, and etc..... They don't even live in the

So Geithner is accepted, even though he did the EXACT same thing, but Dash-hole might have an issue because *he* didn't pay his taxes? NEITHER of them should be / have been confirmed for their positions!

"It's funny-strange how Washington works sometimes." No s***, Dick Tracy! But how much you wanna bet that Obama will still accept him - because of these "trying times we're in". What a load of hooey. This is business as usual....nothing different. This isn't "Change" - it's typical government - lay blame on the other guy when they screw up, and don't accept it (Barney Frank, I'm talking about YOU!) when a good bit of the blame should be laid at your feet!

Daschle says ""I am deeply embarrassed and disappointed by the errors that required me to amend my tax returns," he wrote in the letter. " No, Tommy Boy - you're deeply embarrassed that you were CAUGHT that required you to amend your tax returns!

Why is it that the press runs to Kerry for a quote anything Obama does?

THE MORE THINGS CHANGE--THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME. Clinton claimed to be the first black President, Obama is the second (really the first). I had hopes that he would be a great leader. A great leader surrounds himself with great people--so far he 's picked a lot of not-so-great Clinton folks--I do believe he has a strong moral ethic, however, so we can be spared the "I didn't inhale--I never had sexual relations with that women" embarassment . I also hope that his pandering to the Muslum nations does not weaken our defense against terrorism. Mr. Obama is new in his first major leadership position and is eager to make BIG decisions--so far his decisions scare me.

haha the Messiah has sure implemented change...thefraud of the century continues to fool the ignorant american people....look at his first ten days.....gets in a pissing contest w Rush...signs an order to close Gitmo with no clue o how the prisoners will be processed...his"stimulus" bill actually only apllies 12 cents to every dollar to stimulus..the rest is tax and spend...he apologizes to mUslims and tells them to not hate Americans....I love it...this guy is a joke....but hes articulate...and sadly the american people have been dumbed down by Hollywood....low acadmic standards and the media and they dont see it....welthey will fell it soon....suckers.

Memories are short for the stories of Vet's Administration, fear, foreclosures, Aberto Gonzales, war, WMD's, tax cuts for the rich, executive bonuses, Dick ; "were gonna get hit" Cheny, Randy / Duke Cunningham, Tom DeLay, Lewis Libbey, Bob Novak, Karl Rove, President Bush and the boys.... Tax troubles are serious issues but not up to the level of internatonal intrigue of the recent Bush - NEOCON era. So a little conspiracy, money laundering, lying, deception and some internal top secret document leaks are necessary. All to bring the current tax stories up to the level we are all used to seeing from the past 8 years.

Su-weet! Daschle dodges $140,000 in income taxes and penalties, doesn't pay his Medicare taxes, claims more charitable deductions than he made, looks really dirty for some of his "advisor fees" and payments from health ins. companies, but the "democrats" don't see any problems with any of that, nothing to disqualify him for the Health and Human Services job. Oops, I forgot, they're democrats, no ethics, morality, honesty, or honor to get in their way! Daschle probably doesn't have a clue why there is any uproar about it! Don't expect Sharpton or Geithner think he did anything wrong! The Messiah doesn't see any problem! There's your "Change", allright! The jackals are breaking into the henhouse! (Ya think maybe Geithner will go after him for tax evasion?)

Tom Daschle should withdraw his name from consideration for HHS immediately and avoid further embarrasment for this administration. If his advice is truely essential to the President, he can remain in his other newly-created position as Director of White House Health Care Policy which does not require Senate confirmation. One would think that a single job should keep him busy enough anyway! Surely in this country of over 300 million people, we can find someone equally qualified who is not burdened by ethical issues that make a mockery of Obama's pledges. Former Governor and doctor Howard Dean comes to mind!
