Kennedy returning for stimulus vote

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor February 6, 2009 06:56 PM

By Lisa Wangsness and Sasha Issenberg, Globe Staff

WASHINGTON -- Senator Edward M. Kennedy is returning to Washington to vote on the economic stimulus package, colleagues said this evening.

Senator Max Baucus, who has been working closely with Kennedy on a healthcare overhaul, said he is coming up from Florida, where he has been recuperating. Kennedy, who has brain cancer, suffered a seizure on inauguration day and was advised by doctors to get more rest.

"He's here in town," said New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg.

Democrats could need Kennedy's vote to pass the stimulus package. A tentative deal for a $780 billion version is expected to be announced this evening, but it is unclear when the vote will be.

Kennedy, who was diagnosed last March with an aggressive brain tumor, also made a dramatic return last July to vote on a key Medicare bill.

Ah! The no Drama Obama crowd ... the theatrics are OK for the Dems but as Sen Boxer said on the floor "Just theatrical" when republicans get a wee bit enthused about what they are saying. I for one, am incredibly disgusted by the two-faced democrats, I am now beginning to believe that 2010 will change lots ... unless of course, this awful bill gives lots of billions to Acorn ... then once again, the election will be stolen.

Great. Bush takes over the country with a nice budget surplus and leaves office with the global economy in the toilet thanks to an optional war, excessive spending, de-regulation, CRD's, etc. Meanwhile, everyone here blames Obama, who has been in office for all of nineteen days. What geniuses!

As for Senator Kennedy, thank you. Thank you for shortening your days to vote for health care coverage when you already have it and for economic stimulus that MAY, please God, get the country out of this Republican made mess when your own finances are fine. You are a hero.

There is no bipartisanship. This bill was planned by the democrats months ago before any of the current economic data was compiled. It will not create jobs, but pay for Democratic welfare type programs and serve as an Obama downpayment on more poor voters for the next election. As for transparency, there is none. The 600 million dollars for birth control is still in the bill-they just stripped the language but the money is earmarked for HHS who will spend 600 million on just that.
One more thing: Obama could have helped alot of people with the $170 million he spent on his inauguration. Consider that when you hear him complain about the economic problem he helped create. He was the one who sued, on the grounds it was discriminatory, companies like Citibank because CITI refused to loan to bad credit/high risk borrowers, forcing them to make the loans that have created the finiancial crisis. Now YOUR money will go to pay for home loans for deadbeats who should not have had them to begin with.

The comment about the senator being ill for so long and still getting full priveleges and a paycheck ,not able to do the job should be eyeopening to us,the normal working people. We'd be on workman's comp or disability, surely not full pay.We need to get rid of these political perks. As seen by recent appointees, most of us are more honest than 90% of them.

Surely no one is surprised at this. They need his vote...wouldn't pass without it. I think all concerned with the impact this monster farce will have on us and our children should get busy trying to get more support from the conservative Democrats before the final vote. Surely it's not a done deal.?.

I'm concerned that Kennedy's condition may disqualify his vote.
We need to be assured that his tumor does not have an effect on his thought proccess.
If their is any chance that it might, then the argument to diqualify his vote may be valid.

Teach them how to lower their head when a Lord Kennedy drives by while they are working any of the estates of the government class.
Teach them to recognize any of the armed collectors of the People's Republick.
Teach them to hand over half of what they make, then pay sales tax, then be taxed on any land that they might own in 30 years which will be worthless due to inflation.

No ill will to Mr. Kennedy, but a leader with a brain tumor making decisions that will dramatically affect our country and our future is a bad idea. Don't really care if his "doctors" rule him mentally compentent. Doctors can be paid to say just about anything, just like politicians. Just another example of self over service.

It is amazing what government can do with words.

Bail-out is now "Stimulus Plan." The only thing that gets stimulated is the taxpayer wallet as usual, and the odds are reasonably good it won't work anyway.

Spending is now "Investment." The only thing that gets invested is the taxpayers dollar into projects and programs on which their is no quatifable return.

Welfare payments is now "earned income tax credits." Earned is the correct word, but not by the people that receive the checks. Geithner, Daschle, Killefe, Solis, and Franken, also received "earned income tax credits" the hard way.

There needs to be a new name for this language that avoids the truth. I think Gov-U-Speak would be perfectly appropriate.

As President Obama says, "Words, just words."

If Barack Obama has nothing to hide, why won't he produce his birth certificate showing what hospital in Hawaii he was born at and the attending physician? Also, his college transcripts. Did he attend college as a foreign student? And attending school is Kenya, when only Kenyans were allowed to attend.

He seems to be hiding a lot. We patriotic Americans must keep insisting that the above documents be made public. Mr. Obama can stop all the questions just by letting Americans see the required documents. We need to keep fighting for America's democracy

Why is this guy doing his job a news story? Why is a "dramatic" return something commendable? These Kennedys think and behave like they own these political jobs, even if they are inept(Caroline) or just incapable(Ted). These mandarins, the Kennedys have no shame. The guy should resign so that the people of Massachusetts can get a Senator who can do the job without it being a news story that he showed up for work. Pathetic sufferers of some kind of scam are the people that support these Kennedys.

Real change will occur in 2010. What will Obama do without a majority in both Houses? He and his party partners know they only have two years. I am afraid his efforts to cause any change will cause irreparable harm to this country. However, his partners in the press and Hollywood will spin it. Senator Kennedy needs to resign from his position right now. His employers, the people, are not getting their money's worth out of him. Any congressman, senator, or other elected official at any level of government, who is incapable of attending a majority of meetings, sessions, etc., due to illness, infirmity, campaigning for other office, etc., should be required to resign from that position. Term limits would eliminate many of the problems we have. Government is business and as such, it should be operated as a business. We, the people, should expect more from our employees.

Ted Kennedy has done enough damage to the country and the people in his family. The destruction of our cities under his welfare system, debts, deficits, out of control immigration. This 'stimulus' package is just another nail in the coffin of his legacy.

We Canadians realize most of your media, like CNN with the exception of Larry King, (he tells the news the way it is!)....is very slanted & that is what catapulted obama unfairly into power however we all must say, your news is far more interesting than ours. We agree with you....if Kennedy did not keep up with discussions, show up to work, is not aware of what transpired, he should not be permitted to vote. We worry about you guys...when your economy gets a cold we get pneumonia. We still are concerned about obama trying to break our free trade agreement (NAFTA). It does not take a rocket scientist to see our option would be to retaliate by cutting off to the USA all oil, natural gas, hydro, water, grain, lumber, minerals, shutting off the USA pipelines going through our territories, closing all waterways & airspace to USA etc. Canada has already been overwhelmed by foreign countries offering assistance so I hope you ,our American friends can control obama before he does any serious harm.

I'm losing fath in our goverment more and more each day. They are out for theirselfs not the American people. I would like to know their net worth before getting elected and then their net worth when they leave office, And look at their paypackage and then tell the voter how they made this amount while in office.

So an organized bailout targeted at rebuilding infrastructure is socialism whilst the same tactic involving many more billions for banks is not? It's galling to see the double standard being applied here and the knee jerk reactions by those programed to respond in this way. It's all about privatizing profits and socializing debt people. It doesn't matter who's in power, the agenda always remains the same!

There will be so much socialistic damage in two years, including expanded unionization rights (card check) health care (SChip and beyond), terrorists rights and legal wrangles, legalization of illegals toward citizenship, unbearable debt and multiple international and terrorist conflicts, that we will hardly be able to reverse anything. Obama will mark the beginning of the end of one of the greatest democratic republics in history. The wisdom of the founders of this country was magnificent and God-inspired. The current political and recent past politicians have drifted to self-aggrandizementand this is my lifetime job mentality. This bill is the ultimate Trojan Horse. Individual elements that would never pass Congress as single items have been bundled together and tagged "stimulus", but will have the same pernicious effects as the contents of the original Trojan "gift". The only thing that is keeping me from going insane is President Obama's promise that he is going to go after wasteful spending with a scapel, so I'm certain that only a small fraction of this bill will ever see the light of day. I am so glad he is man enough to stand up to special interest groups. A weaker President might have told Congress to handle it themselves, which we all know would be a disaster.

These are serious times that require our public officials to act responsibly. There is no excuse to include anything in the current economic stimulus plan that does not have a high probability of creating jobs or realistically stimulating our economy. Social engineering and/or non-stimulus spending items need to be removed and put into other bills so they can be judged on their merits. I constantly marvel at the wisdom of our founding fathers.
President Thomas Jefferson stated simply:
“I, however, place economy among the first and most important republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared.”
Any public official who needlessly expands the debt of our Republic, for non-stimulus spending items during these serious times, has no right to hold public office.

Its amazing how IGNORANT the "conservative" public is about this stimulus package, and the comments on this article are reflective of the Republican mindset. Throwing buzz words out like "socialism" and "pork" - and ripping on Ted for flying in "with taxpayers footing the bill". Do you think Republican Congressmen and Senators pay their own travel expenses? It must only be Democratic elected officials who use taxpayer $ for travel expenses right? Its time for brainwashed conservative knuckleheads to get their heads our of their ass and support whats right for America. Sorry, but the old monicker of "tax cuts + small government = prosperity" does not ring true and that has been proven by the likes of Reagan, Bush Sr., & GW. Trickle-down economics is a proven DISASTER to the American economy, and Obama and the dems are now truly doing whats right to fix the mess that Republicans have created. So you might as well embrace it, because not only is it the right thing (this stimulus pkg.), but there is nothing that Republicans can do to stop it. Or dems could opt to send out $600 checks to taxpayers like GW did and hope that fixes the problem...Republican ideology is dying and proven ineffective, and the new regime is about to prove it.

Is there any way we could ask the question as to which party platform the voters of the US support with out you or I paying for the results? A blind survey that mixes both party platforms without party identification! Then a report showing local support for each party platform! I know the possible result if no party identification is used, I am sure the Republican Party will be the local winner! Many US Voters do not know the party platform issues of their party! Nor would they care!

Once again the Democrats are trying to force Socialism down our throats for the "greater good". The founding fathers are spinning in their graves at Pelosi, Reid, Kennedy, Obama, Biden, et al. If it's good for Democrat's it's not good for the country. Obama should focus on getting his own people to pay their taxes instead of stiffing we the little people with the bill. He is not my President, and it certainly does not represent my values or goals.

Why is he still in the senate. He should be on disability. He no longer has the capacity to do his job. His vote is a joke and a symptom of how these fat cats feel about the people they are supposed to represent. He was an imbecile before he got brain cancer

Our political system at the federal level is in dire needs of a major overhaul. Start with imposing TERM LIMITS for every elected or appointed public servant it is way way overdue. Then ban all lobbying, and campaign contributions both are nothing but Legalized bribery. That would in turn level playing field for all parties not just the ones with the most money. Finally make the federal government operate on a balanced budget just like every buisness in the USA does.

Here comes another pig back to slobber in the Democrat sink hole called a stimulus package. One of the biggest porkers ever is headed back to join in passing the biggest Democrat porkfest of all time! But hey, if those of us that pay taxes are footing the bill, why should the socialist liberal politicians worry? What is it going to take before there is a TAXPAYER REVOLT?

I suggest that we build a wind farm in Washington. The hot air there should keep the turbines spinning out of control.... just like their spending. Also, maybe the windmills will take away some of the stench of the new pig farm!

Wha I dont understand is why he doesnt resign his Senate seat? Is it fair to the taxpayers that he cannot represent them. I feel bad for his health issue but it is serious and he is well off financially, so it would be the good thing to do. Also which healthcare did he use for his wonderful healthcare? Private insurance I am sure, while he will push for the masses to have gov't healthcare which is scary. In Canada they are allowing now for private insurance care since the wait for an MRI is one year.

Well, don't you just love the "change", Obama wasn't kidding when he promised the change. We will not recognize our country after that "big black nothing" that has no clue what he is doing is done with former USA. Weclome to new Soviet Union!!
I was watchin the floor of the senate and it was shocking to see the faces like Byrd, who I doubt even knows who he is. There should be a senility test!
No wonder our country is in trouble, all those tax dodgers (it would be curious to see how many of them actually are paying taxes) may not be even to understand what is written in that pork bill.

He returned from Florida in a private jet. This is OK for liberals, but not for capitalists.

In her "500 million American", Nancy Pelosi might include the 200 million hispanics to come via our open southern border. This is wishful thinking Nancy.

I understand the government sent a plane to Florida to bring Kennedy back to Washington for the vote.

This bill is so bad you can smell it a mile off. Some of the comments from the Senators is"we know its a bad bill but we have got to do some thing"I am sure glad that Captain Sullenberger did not have this this mind set when his engines stopped. Then if you try to send Polesi an e-mail she will not take it if you do not live in her district so she gives you another e-mail address where she will not receive any e-mail.Long live the queen.

IT APPEARS THAT AMERICA HAS PASSED THE POINT OF NO RETURN WHERE MORE OF OF ITS CITIZENS GET MONEY FROM THE GOVERNMENT (FOR WHAT EVER REASON) THAN THERE ARE TAXPAYERS TO SUPPORT THE NONTAXPAYERS. AS THE SAYING GOES " THOSE WHO FORGET HISTORY ARE DOOMED TO RE-LIVE IT." BY THE TIME THE PUBLIC THAT CAN THINK ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE DEMONCRITS POLICIES TO VOTE ,IT WILL BE TOO LATE TO THROW THEM OUT, THE REPUBLIC WILL HAVE HEMORRAGED TOO MUCH TO BE SAVED...

It is very telling that the White House sent a plane to pick up an aging senator in Florida, suffering from brain cancer, to get a desperately needed vote for the "stimulus" (and I use the term very loosely) package. One, who is paying for that plane? Duh, we are. Two, Kennedy hasn't even been present for any of the ongoing negotiations about the package, and yet he's prepared to come support it? And Obama is going on TV tonite to again, try and talk us into signing this huge contract without reading it, because he doesn't have time for us to read it and something bad will happen if we don't! Wake up people!

To the one or two posters here blindly going along with this stinkfest of a bill. Have you read it? There seems to be a big concentration of spending in Washington D.C., and, of all places, Cincinnati, OH. Do you think you'll get a nice job out of this porker? Yes, it takes some effort to research legislation, but it's important to put down your Koolaid and get informed. Also read up on Keynesian economics.
