Obama's aunt back in Boston for deportation hearing

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor March 23, 2009 08:00 PM

By Maria Sacchetti, Globe Staff

President Obama's aunt, a Kenyan immigrant who ignited controversy last year for living in the United States illegally, has returned to her quiet apartment in a Boston public housing complex to prepare for an April 1 deportation hearing.

When her case emerged in the waning days of the presidential race last year, Zeituni Onyango, a tall, frail-looking woman in her late 50s who walks with a cane, fled the media attention to stay with relatives in Cleveland.

She attended Obama's inauguration in January and, according to neighbors, returned to Boston a few weeks ago for her third attempt to fight removal from the United States. She had been living in the country illegally since she was ordered deported in 2004.

Onyango is a half-sister of the president's late father, Barack Obama Sr., who was absent most of Obama's life and who died in a car accident in 1982. The president met his aunt during a trip to Kenya and included her in his 1995 memoir, "Dreams from My Father," but has said he was unaware of her immigration issues.

Now the woman Obama called "Auntie Zeituni" is in a national spotlight, where she is being seen as a test for the president's commitment to enforcing immigration laws.

Obama has not had any involvement in the case, and believes that the case should run its ordinary course, White House spokesman Ben LaBolt said today.

Critics, outraged that she is living in taxpayer funded public housing while thousands of citizens and legal immigrants are on waiting lists, are scrutinizing the case for political favoritism. Others caution that she may have legitimate grounds to stay in the United States.

"The case is unusual in American history because it’s a relative of the president involved in immigration matters," said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Washington-based Center for Immigration Studies. "It really does present the White House with an opportunity or a minefield. If they follow through on a decision that she should go home, that would actually raise the president’s credibility enormously on immigration enforcement."

Onyango's fate will play out behind closed doors before veteran immigration Judge Leonard Shapiro in Boston. Onyango's lawyer Margaret Wong of Ohio successfully argued to reopen her case in December and have the proceedings closed to the public, according to the Executive Office for Immigration Review, which oversees immigration courts.

Onyango declined two requests for interviews in recent days.

Wong has not responded to repeated requests for comment. But her spokesman told the Cleveland Plain Dealer in January that Onyango would present new evidence to back an asylum claim.

I think this woman should be deported because she is simply an illegal immigrant, there is nothing different from here than the many other illegal immigrants. Nonetheless it will be hard for Obama because she is family

Auntie Zeituni needs to leave just like anyone else who was staying here illegally. And her case should be open to public eye just like anyone else's. If she stays, Obama is just a hypocrite. Our tax dollars at work...subsidized housing for illegal aliens.

Why should some distantly related person be given preferential treatment above the currently long list of US citizens in need of subsidized housing? I think the state of MA should sue Auntie for the money it spent on her illegal housing swindling. Accountability...Obama certainly talks a good show but when the tire hits the road, where is he? She is as close a relative as his father was. Rolling stone....

I would imagine that there was some sort of documentation process when she moved into public houseing. Would'nt she at least have to be a resident of Massachusetts? Therefore maybe she should be allowed to stay in the county, sending her back would cause choas, seeing that she certainly could be a person of interest for criminals, but she should be taken out of public houseing. She can stay with her family back in Clevland.

Some of you people are nutty, Milked the U.S dry?! Save your indignation for teh fat cats who have ACTUALLY bled the country of its financial stability. The fact is, the woman will probably be deported regardless of whether she has a legitimate claim, because Obama's people will see the P.R nightmare it will be if she stays. Fox News et al will bleet for months, maybe years about it. It will crop up at re-election. They won't let it happen.

But seriously, some of you are just being plain mean-spirited. Your worst day is 100 times the best day of billions of people living in 3rd world countries. Perhaps those of us living in comparative luxury should speak with a little more compassion.

I am a Naturalized Us Citizen. However, judging from 99.9% of the comments on this issue, it is crystal clear that the vast majority of folks posting comments does NOT have a clue or understand immigration laws and how things work. Once an individual have documentation showing LEGAL entry into the United States up on or close to the Expiration of their visa or time granted to stay in the us, that individual can file for an extension or adjustment of status; Not because they want to, but because current immigration laws allow it. When a Cuban fled Cuba ILLEGAL as hell with NO Papers, under the DRY FOOT WET FOOT Policy, the moment this ILLEGAL Cuban foot touches any DRY US land, that Illegal Cuban is instantly process and given a Permanent Resident (GREEN) Card to reside PERMANENTLY In The United States. On the other hand, when a Haitian flee Haiti under Tougher inhumane conditions, they are immediately send back NO Questions Asked. Why The Double Standard??

He has always said what people want to hear to get where he wanted. Well it worked again. He's in office. OUR Troops home HAHHHH ... yep he brought em home alright to send em off to Afghanistan. The same worn out troops who have served this country with crap pay, suffer mind and body life alterering injuries and can't get the medical care they need. The spouses, kids who lost moms or dads to war that get kicked out on to the streets from housing befoer the grass even has a chance to grow on top their graves. WHO CARES ABOUT ONE OLD WOMAN , CHRIST THEIR ARE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO BE CONCERNED WITH.

She wasn't conspiring , she just needed a frigin roof over her head in a country

White Americans have forgotten about the potato famine, war in europe, the catholic church, and a host of other events that lead to immigration 3 or 4 Generations ago.

Some people get so wrapped in what they perceive as "fair" that they lose sight of reality. To many people his Aunt is his Aunt, not a distant relative. Family extends beyond the folks you grew up in the house with in our world of extended family.

She is the presidents aunt, and based on that the US has an interest in keeping her here safe and sound.

Haitian should remain in haiti and seek aid to rebuild their country why leave stay and make a difference. stop begging and crying to live in the states when you are desperately needed in haiti

Get rid of ALL OF THEM. My County is going broke housing, feeding, educating their kids and providing medical care for them. I don't give a hoot about Obama's aunt. Ship her off with the rest of them. If not, then change the laws, take away all border protection and allow anyone to walk right in. I'm sick and tired of this 'legal vs. illegal' babble. If I, as a fourth generation American, do something illegal, I will be prosecuted. If someone with absolutely no roots in this country does somethig illegal, they will be sheltered, glorified and aided by various groups funded by MY tax dollars.

From what I've read/heard there are over 100,000 illegals aliens living in government subsidized housing in this country. This has got to stop and his aunt needs to go back to where she came from (send her to an undisclosed location). I recall Obama (when she was outed and living in subsidized housing in Boston) saying if she broke the law they should deport her. I for one am sick and tired of supporting illegals -- ship them to where they came from. My neighborhood (part of Boston) has been invaded by illegals -- they don't assimilate and they don't want to learn English. To the ones that want to give carte blanche to the illegals come to East Boston and you'll see what illegal immigration can do to a community -- it used to be a clean and beautiful part of Boston -- but has been ravaged by illegals.

You guys need to get a life and blame the REAL person for the issues that's going on in America...To me this is a no win situation for Obama no matter what happens. If she get's deported, Obama will he a hypocrite for not standing up for his Aunt. If she get's to stay Obama will be the bad guy because you all are complaining about Tax Payers dollars. Why won't you all go and blog about your boy Bush for putting the ecomony in the state that it's in now and please just admit that you are all sour about having a BLACK yes I said it BLACK COMMANDER IN CHIEF. You all really need to start blaming the person who is causing all of this, and it is NOT Obama...This man has done more in his first few months than Bush did in his whole 8 years. It's like you can't take a black man who is actually smarter than most white people and escpecially smarter than that dumb a@@ no talking president George W. Bush

Get real yourself. By your reasoning, we should all Obama's many Kenyan relatives (turns out he has some Irish ones, too, on his mother's side-do they get to come?) here because they "might be" killed or torturned by enemies of the U.S Are we going to provide them all with Secret Service protection HERE (at taxpayer expense, of course). After all, they're more likely to get harmed here by random street crime than by enemies of the U.S. in their own country.

Aunt Zeituni is NOT AN IMMIGRANT. She is an illegal alien who has received due process twice and thumbed her nose at it, and us, because she didn't like the outcome. Now, she gets a third try because her nephew's the President. As for the original Indians, they weren't so "original", but crossed to this continent from Asia over a land bridge. But so what if our ancestors were immigrants or if some of them were even illegal aliens? How does that excuse breaking the law NOW? If my grandfather had been an embezzler or a thief, would that make it OK for me, 100 years later, to do the same and expect to get away with it?

Barry Soetoro will find a way to let her stay, on our dime of course. He will not deport any illegal alien as it would then apply to him as an illegal alien Indonesian or Kenyan citizen. He will introduce amnesty later this year as he needs all the illegal aliens legalized as he can before the 2012 election, that's his only chance of re-election. To him they are not illegal aliens, but rather undocumented democrats.

Stop drinking the Kool-Aid Obama Baby. It is obvious that you are fixated on Obama's race and not his borderline communist policies. And to your analysis that this whole economic situation is solely the result of eight years of former President Bush, then perhaps you need to do a little research on the Glass-Steagall Act, Community Reinvestment Act, Frank, Dodd, Reid, etc a little more there sunshine. Please stop playing the race card as well. That has nothing to do with Obama's clearly evident incompetence as Commander in Chief and is a typical calling card for the left to avoid the real issues.

And some of you should realize that not everyone from Africa or a Third World country has it all that bad, or if they do, it's because of their own choosing and that of their countrypeople. For example, Obama's father returned to Kenya after getting a graduate degree in economics from Harvard in the hope of being a "big man" in Kenya's government. There are elites even in Third World countries. India, for example, has an affluent middle class about equal to the ENTIRE population of the U.S. The trappings may be different (servants instead of dishwashers and clothes washers) but they're still middle class.

Her case is more serious because she has ignored a previous deportation order. She just refused to leave. Once a person is ordered deported and in the system, that situation is rarely reversed, especially if the person has no source of income. Those immigration raids last year were all based on the government going out to get people who had already been ordered to leave.

She'll get special treatment. I really doubt they would deport a relative of a sitting President. If she does get to stay, Obama should suport her financially.

There are people who has lived in the United States for over 15 years and still is fighting to get their citizenship. I believe that if anyone live here in our country past 15 to 20 years deserve the rights of citizenship and it should not cost them thousands of dollars either. There are people with families and has raised their kids here in our country and arent citizens yet. But they are scare to even apply because of fear of deportation. Give these people a break. You have hsipanics that are illegal and are commiting crime daily in our country, you have people from Syria and Iraq who have visas and is given the right to live on a green card as an american citizen, Is that really fair? I think OUR President OBAMA is staying out of this situation only because he knows that this country still has racial problem and the news reports will have a field day with this mess only because they are waiting for him to mess up. Basically, I think that this is a free damn country and if people or coming over here to better they lives then so be it. For the person who left a comment about obama need to stick to what he said during his campaign to get people votes. In case you haven't notice that's all he's been doing tryin to clean up what BUSH messed up. Yet you people can't see that because you to busy tryin' to put him down. I think if he wants to help his aunt that is just fine because if anyone of us was in his shoes we will do anything to keep our aunt in this country.

The family and friends were paying him--and he did nothing. That's how she missed her court dates. They have since hired this woman lawyer who is evidently highly regarded and highly capable.

I strongly believe she should be able to stay and given legal paperwork to do so. We all just want to be able to live a good life. Its easy for people to send others back when they are born here and doesnt understand what actually happens when that person does go back. They dont have a life back in their country or family. Most comments on here are ignorant and heartless. It contracdicts everything America should stand for. America is a land of opportunity. It shouldnt deport people back who are just trying to have a better life.

Shame on all of you, you know very well that you are all immigrates. None of you would last one second in the presences of God. Thank You Sandra77. I lived in the USA from Feb. 1957 until Mar. 2004. I was born 29 March 1956. Since my Deportation I truly do not ever want to live in the USA again even though all my family including parents are alive and well, living in the USA, I have no desire to set foot on blood land again except to see my mothers last days on earth. No, I don't want any part of the USA. And don't think in your heart that I've commit a greater crime than you have, because I haven't.

All illegals should be deported or their supporters charged for the cost of keeping them on the public tax dollar.

Leave her alone! Be truthful to yourself... Would you deport your own aunt if you were the President?

SOM E OF U PPL R SO INGNORANT. WHY DOES WHEN SOMEONE IN PLACE OF POWER FAMILY IS INVOLVED IN SO TYPE OF ISSUE, WE AUTOMATICALLY JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS? WHY? DO WE NOT HAVE OUR OWN ISSUES THAT ARE MORE IMPORTANT? AND WHO SAID THAT OBAMA WAS GOING TO TRY TO KEEP HER IN THIS COUNTRY? THE PPL THAT NEED TO REALLY WORRY ABOUT THAT WOMAN IS HER. HOW ABOUT FOCUSING ON THE ILLEGALS THAT HAVE BEEN HERE FOR YEARS AND ACTUALLY CONTRIBUTED TO OUR NATION AND ARE DEPORTED, WITHOUT A FAIR TRIAL. OR WHEN PRIOR PRESIDENT(S) SENT ALL THE RELATIVES OF TERRIORISTS BACK TO THEIR COUNTRIES TO SAVE THEM FROM PERSICUTION. OR HOW WE ARE A NATION THAT MAKES OUR OWN DOLLAR AND WE ARE TRILLIONS IN THE HOLE. QUESTION THAT, NOT SOMEONE WHO HASN,T EVEN SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THE ISSUE YOUR SO WORRIED OVER.

It's interesting that this is even being discussed? How is she any different than some of the lazy US citizens that are in this country? If taxpayers want to complain, complain about the citizens who refuse to get a job and live off of the government. Complain about all the benefits that they receive for not working, while you're at work busting your tail trying to make ends meet. Most "illegal immigrants" work twice as hard as U.S.citizens, because they're usually supporting those they left behind. They take the jobs that us as Americans feel we're too good to take. And contrary to the beliefs of many, this is not an Obama issue. This woman was in this situation prior to him becoming President, so stop making this an Obama issue.

You people are so cruel, You need to take a look at your history. Rich America set it's own self up for failure. If you go to any other country, the people STICK TOGETHER. If you really cared about were ya tax money is going, bush would have never been in office for 8 yrs. I hope they do let his aunt stay, why not? This has been going on for years. Of course they are going to try to link any thing to Obama to try to make him look bad, because he is Black. I bet all the people who are saying negative thing about this voted for bush & needs to blame there stupidity on Obama.

There are so many illegal russians, latin americans, mexicians and hsipanics need to be deported too. I dont think it is fair to target just one person.

Deport the illegal immigrant NOW! And, force Obama to show the long version of his birth certificate so the American people can decide if he was actually born in American and or constitutionally able to become president.

IMPEACH OBAMA !!!

If she is deported to Kenya she probably will be subjected to a very very severe hardship not ruling out persecution. She comes from a partof Kenya that is still very volatile politically. I do not know her case but i think Her life might be in danger when she returns to Kenya. If You remember Less than 2 yrs ago Kenya had all sorts of problems. Those sentments are still running wild. Her life is safer here with her nephew the president.

How many of you really know anything about her "illigal status"? As all of you pointed out, this is a civilized nation of laws. She should be afforded due proccess like everyone else. We spend billions helping nations, even those that hate our guts, because we are at heart a compassionate people. So what's wrong with lending this woman, whoever she is, a helping hand in her time of need? It's not like she is using tax money to dine in 5 star restaurants and luxuriates in penthouse suites.

I can't believe that the Boston Housing office did not turn her apt over to a US citizen who deserves it since November...........
She is an Illegal who the US court system ordered he deported 4 years ago!!!
Is this the same US Justice system that Obama has a license to practice law with???
This is clearly a person who we do not want in the Country........One who disobeys the law and courts.

We should demand Justice be served..........If she can defy a court as an illegal, than I guess that means everyone else can too!!!

The President should be ashamed of this and should have had her sent back home...............If she gets free and is allowed to remain here, the president and our court system will loose credibility in the eyes of the world.

I feel that President Obama's aunt should be allowed to remain in the United States. She realizes the danger in returning to Kenya. Many of you need to think, would you want one of your loved ones deported, or would you yourself want to be deported in a circumstance like this? If you believe in God and all that He stands for, then you would stand up for the right thing. Fast and pray for Obama's aunt as well as for Obama himself. He was made Commander-in-Chief for a reason. It's obvious that he's a gifted and intelligent man. Let's forget the color of his skin and stand behind him. He needs our support.

Send her back! She was declined assylum in 2004 and ordered out of the country then! It is not fair to the people who want to enter this country fairly, who file papers and wait on waiting list and enter their names in lotteries. They do things the RIGHT way and then come here and actually WORK and PAY TAXES. Meanwhile, Auntie cheats and gets in and DOES NOT PAY TAXES and lives in subsidized housing. She also gave $260 to Obama's campaign (I always thought only citizens could contribute by law?). She can afford to makecampaign contributions but not to pay her own rent? She also has no job!

It may or may not seem fair, but once Barack was elected, she was all set.

Would definitely be a career limiting move for someone in INS to deport her.
In the end, she gets citizenship regardless of what some low-level functionary does.

Sure, let Aunt Zeituni stay and work through the system. After all, are we not allowing Obama to serve as POTUS even though he himself stated in his own book that he does not qualify as "natural-born" as our constitution requires? His own "birth cert" shows that both his parents were not US Citizens, a fundamental prerequisite for natural-born status, as anticipated by John Jay when he suggested that requirement for the Presidency. Or is there something else?

Well if she must get deported any money she has put into social security must be returned to her as well as all the millions of people who has worked with a legal social security number. If you look int the social security guide lines you will see that people who get deported cannot get their money they put into social security, so who keeps that money? Fight for your money aunt obama

the sad part of this deal is that this story was revealed the day before election day, in the Seattle newspaper, and the rest of the media didn't pick it up. Thinking of what this might have done to his election chances it is no wonder that it was held that long. I'm affraid that this country is going to have its second amnesty the first one since 1986. What date is the third one going to occur, probably another twenty years from now. Remember this, less people mean more jobs, and with the unemployment condition forget , bail-outs, stimulus, just show the illegals the door so they can make their nation a better place, instead of screwing up mine.
