Fox won't show Obama press conference

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor April 27, 2009 04:48 PM

This is sure to fire up liberals who believe Fox is nothing more than a Republican mouthpiece.

Fox announced this afternoon that it will not air President Obama's news conference on Wednesday night, marking his 100th day in office and the third primetime Q&A session of his administration .

And its refusal -- in contrast to other networks -- is not even to make sure "American Idol" isn't preempted. Rather, the Associated Press reports, Fox plans to air its regular schedule that night, which in that time slot is the Tim Roth drama "Lie to Me," which is the lead-in to Idol.

Executives at Fox, owned by News Corp., would not comment on the decision, AP said, but it noted that Fox didn't carry a prime-time speech by President George W. Bush in November 2001.

Fox plans to send viewers to Fox News Channel and Fox Business Channel, which will both air the press conference.

Tim Roth is a good actor. I can understand how Fox would hesitate to air the press conference out of respect for him. If it was my tv station I probably would too. Tim Roth for life.

Are we talking about the Fox News channel, or the local Fox affiliate?

Standard stuff. The Times wouldn't print McCain's op ed letter, NPR burried a Palin retraction, etc. Newspapers have held a governing perspective since they were invented, and networks are pretty much the same. The beat goes on...

Who isn't sick of watching this arrogant egotistical windbag appear AGAIN... ?
Between his 13th appearance on the cover of Time and now his third prime time "press conference" Where he doesn't answer any questions. They should just put the camera on his Teleprompter and those who care can read his BS instead of listening to it.

I'd rather watch daffy duck cartoons than this buffoon. Thank you Fox for giving us an alternative to being forced fed left wing psychobabble

they are just trying to be fair and balanced - bush had so few press conferences that they need to ration obama's.

Is it really only liberals who think Fox News is a Republican mouthpiece? I can't imagine any rational person out there, regardless of political views, thinks Fox News' intent is to be fair and balanced.

Hmmm...must be because Fox Gnus knows its' stalwart audience might keel over if they had their minds cracked open even the slightest bit by ideas which didn't come from Fox Network. Can't have tha happening! God knows a democracy runs on standing one's ground, not contemplating new ideas...

This is the Fox Network, not Fox News. You should correct the title link on the front page, which states "Fox News won't show Obama Press Conference."

1 channel is enough for Presidential news conferences. Both people who watch it can use the same channel.

There are plenty of outlets available to watch Obama. There's no need for every broadcast network to show every presidential press conference. There are most likely zero US viewers who receive a Fox station as their only broadcast station anyway, since Fox most often was found solely on UHF channels in its inception. With most of the country receiving their TV through sources other than open air, and having a variety of networks already broadcasting the press conference, why not revel in having a choice?

NBC has been starving for programming anyway, and it's not like Obama won't be on TV again next week!

why cant the republican sleaze machine just go away, yes cheney and limbaugh

Their broadcast license requires them to do programming in the public interest. I would say they should have the same coverage that they did when Bush was in office, but I think BO already had more press conferences in his first 100 days than Bush did in his entire 8 year rule.

This network is a freakin joke, and anyone who believes it's "fair and balanced" are unbalanced.

Now, while the apologists might say (and rightly so) that MSNBC is biased to the left, there remains the major difference: Fox is a BROADCAST network using public airwaves, while MSNBC is a cable channel. Big, huge difference. And if some people decide to contest their license (FOX 25 would be vulnerable), it is within the FCC's jurisdiction to deny their renewal if it is shown that the company is abusing the public airwaves.

Oh, and it's too bad that Foon Rhee, "deputy national political director," doesn't know the difference between Fox and the Fox News Network (which IS showing the press conference, of course).

"Standard stuff. The Times wouldn't print McCain's op ed letter"

McCain isn't our president.

As long as MSNBC has Morning Joe every day and has Pat Buchanan appearing there and elsewhere frequently, it won't compare to Fox, folks. No argument about Primetime on MSNBC being the lefty equivalent to Fox, though. Fox is Fox is Fox. Who cares? Their audience doesn't wanna watch the President anyway, and the rest of us go elsewhere anyway.

The Globe covered their own "please give us money and read our rag" rally where 200 people showed up...yet REFUSED to cover the TEA party in Boston where almost 2,000 people showed up. Boston Globe was respectable years ago...now they're just a Democrat mouthpiece...no wonder they're going under...

This probably stems from Fox being upset that Obama refused to appear on MadTV after he made appearances on ESPN and Leno.

Either that or they're worried about him making fun of handicapped kids or poor people again.

Fox News still on the air? They must be making stuff up to fill the time!!!

Posted by John S April 27, 09 06:47 PM

What can Fox say? This is part of our decision to keep people as ignorant as possible. We would only televise a news conference if we thought it would be unfavorable to his political fortunes.

In reality Fox is doing what is best for Fox. It is only if Fox is confronted with it's responsibilities as a recipient of the public airways. As things stand they and the other stations behave as if they are the owners of the airways. They are by way of their ownership of the politicians.

FOX equipment is still set up over at the air base hanger....waiting for a 2016 win. I guess NEOCONS will have to depend on the highly reputable Limbaugh and Hannity for the flim flam on the flip flop.

How typical that liberals can't even read. Maybe most of you need to re-read the article. It specifically states that the FOX network will not air the speech but, "plans to send viewers to FOX News Channel and FOX Business Channel, which will BOTH air the press conference" (emphasis mine). This must be a conspiracy of epic proportions by FOX to keep the public ignorant by refusing to let the annointed one occuppy every channel on the TV set at the same time. What's the world coming to?
