Michelle Obama on 'most beautiful' list

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor April 29, 2009 02:54 PM

Michelle Obama, who has appeared on one magazine cover after another and who polls shows is widely admired, can add another feather to her cap:

She's one of People magazine's 100 most beautiful people.

The first lady, whose fashion choices are closely scrutinized, is shown wearing a sleeveless gown in a sneak peek of the annual list on the magazine's website.

"I had a father and a brother who thought I was beautiful, and they made me feel that way every single day," she says in the accompanying caption. "I grew up with very strong male role models who thought I was smart and fast and funny, so I heard that a lot. I know that there are many young girls who don’t hear it."

Obama, who has championed military families among her issues, marked her husband's 100th day in office by joining Jill Biden, Vice President Joe Biden's wife, and more than 100 congressional spouses bagging food for hungry children at a Washington food bank.

I guess she wasn't as beautiful last year. Or maybe some people on last year's list became less beautiful this year.

If you're on the list one year, and off the next, do you work extra hard re-beautifying yourself to get back on the list the following year?

I have never seen two people more interested in getting in these tabloids than the Obamas- they are out of control.

Have to agree with diamondcutter - these two are obsessed with being in the news each and every single day! And WHAT a surprise - the MSM is so ready and willing to put them there, thanks to that wonderful Kool-Aid they've all been partaking of!

Boy - if this guy royally screws it up during this administration, aren't THEY going to look stupid? Oh wait. They already *DO* look stupid, because they're not reporters anymore - they're actually affecting and creating the news. So much for journalism, huh?

Although she's an attractive woman, I think that there are many who are more beautiful than her. If she wasn't the first African-American First Lady, would she be on this list?

Funny how much more "beautiful" you become once you attain a position of status or "celebrity".

Please. I doubt the Obamas went seeking her inclusion. She's a perfectly appropriate choice. And I love her caption.

Listen to all these haters! LOL So funny to me. I don't think that the Obama's are contacting these magazines requesting to be interviewed. It's certainly not her fault that people thinks she's beautiful. I’m guessing she didn’t contact People Magazine and request they do a story on her. I’m betting she looks better than everyone on this message board sitting here talking trash. She IS a beautiful strong woman Mother and Wife and guess what folks?? There are even MORE out there than you could ever imagine. Don't get upset, maybe ONE day someone will notice how ugly you are, both inside and out and put you in a magazine somewhere.

you have to be kidding me. I can name 100 more beautiful people off the top of my head. She's an attractive woman for her age and she dresses elegantly but thats about it. what has this world come to. I actually think Obama is better looking

I'm bashing People magazine, not the Obamas. Another responder noted that the list changes from year to year, why? Does someone become less "beautiful" from one year to the next simply because they fall out of the public eye?

What about their sexiest man/woman alive? Why does is change annually if the person from the prior year is still living?

Why this "achievement" in a fluff magazine is worthy of reporting is beyond me...

When is this love affair going to end? She is not beautiful, and her husband is not attractive. I don't get it. If they were walking down Boylston St in Boston and you didn't know who they were, the word beautiful would not be the first word you would use to describe either one of them. This is ridiculous!

Sure must be good Kool-Aid if 68% of the American public -- Dems, Repubs, Indies, et al -- are enjoying it. Maybe you should stop drinking the prune juice, eh?

"people" don't think she's beautiful... "People Magazine" does. Can the media orgy get any more nauseating?

And to think McCain was mocked for referring to Obama as nothing but a rock star.

Wow, jealous much people? First off, did you ever think "beautiful" might indicate beauty below the skin's surface? Regardless, Michelle Obama is striking, no one can deny that...those that do are likely resentful right wingers who have nothing better to do when not licking their wounds than to try every attempt to tear down the rightful commander-in-chef and his family! Get over it people!! We are all one nation and need to learn to come together...but that is off topic. I think Michelle is gorgeous inside and out.

Pravda has nothing on the leftwing Obamamania media.

Even my wife, who is about as apolitical as you can get, mentioned that every time she's in the checkout aisle Barrack and/or Michelle are on some cover (People, Us, etc).

It's all part of the liberal propaganda machine. As much as they demonized Bush, they are glorifying, 10 fold, the affirmative action hero.

#17 I couldn't have agree more but I think they are good for all of us in this generation, we all so obsessed of only the pretty face gets to be famous and shining. It is about time the obama get to be like the most of others who is just
average looking. And get to lead.

Ramona126

Why are we racists and haters because we don't think she's beautiful? I'm so sick of hearing that word from people like you just because you disagree. She is not beautiful, not because she's black, but because she isn't. There are many beautiful black woman, she is not one of them. And if you think she is so beautiful inside than take a look at her college thesis and tell me what you think. She is full of anger and hatred. You probably don't have a problem with Rev.Wright and the hatred he preached to them for twenty years. Hypocrite

I think the People Magazine annual list is nonsense. Having said that, I do think that Michelle Obama is a very attractive woman. I see beauty in her intelligence, confidence, integrity, and devotion to her family. There is much to be admired. And, beauty is multi-dimensional.

I don't think previous comments are racist, but they are mean-spirited. The level of discourse on the Globe boards is, at times, disappointing .

WOW! Darwin was wrong. We are really not evolving at all.
Michelle Obama is an amazing woman. Educated, hard-working and committed to causes that will benefit all of us. People Magazine does not speak for me. I don't care what they write. I won't go in to celebrity bashing but come on...People is not exactly for intellectuals! I think, however, that Mrs. Obama is a woman for the people and I admire her immensely.
I also hope that someday, we will truly rise above stupidity, ignorance, pettiness and hatreds.

Because she's African American? Would any random white woman be thought of as beautiful, in your eyes?

Or, better put David, are African American women beautiful? Any?

You're exactly what The President meant when he talked during the campaign about 'typical white people.'

Haters. Boston is full of 'em.

Ever since Princess Di passed away, People Magazine has searched desperately for that one celeb whose cover photo would ensure brisk sales. Jennifer Aniston was their choice for a while, but it looks now that they're placing their bets on Michelle Obama. I can't fault Michelle; it's not her doing, but rest assured she will be jettisoned as soon as another flavor of the month presents itself.

Cole Porter

It sounds like you have also heard the words of Rev. Wright. It is you that needs to take a look at yourself and ask yourself why you are so angry and full of hate.

I just don't think either one of them is attractive. Not because she's black and he's biracial, but because it's my opinion. This is America and I am entitled to have an opinion without being labeled. Get over it and stop the name calling.

If I were Michele Obama I would be insulted by the fact that Tim "I'm too sexy to pay taxes" Geithner is also part of the same list.

That said, the level of continued sycophantic media worship towards the president is worrysome. I actually feel tempted to watch Fox News some times just to offset the amount of non-stop bootlicking the Obamas (their puppy included!) are subjected to by the press.

I am completely and utterly shocked by the audacity that you so called "American" people have splattered all over a harmless news story. The sad part is - it brings out your eggregiously true colors. Pathetic.

David, Ramona didn't call you all racists for not agreeing with Mrs. Obama being on the list - she merely pointed out the fact that more than half of the comments regarding the topic have some sort of racially derogatory undertone. Sorry you feel that one slight comment could have targeted everyone who stated their opinion. She's not a hypocrite, and from the looks of it, you're probably suffering from a guilty conscience to be so easily offended by her remark.

Nonetheless, all of you who will take this as another opportunity to attack the Obama family, take a look at the mediocre lives I'm sure a majority of you live. Sitting on a computer, thinking of anything and everything you could use to criticize the President of our country. Did Michelle personally do something to you? I'd highly doubt that she did. Stop being jealous of her, and her family - it's getting a little old.

Sorry, you winners can't all be beautiful enough to be on the list. What a shame.

In a city with so many educated and intelligent people why is that only about 2% of them seem to post comments? Obviously they have better ways to use their time but people say such stupid, uninformed, narrow minded and defensive things here that it's appalling. I think Michelle Obama is doing a wonderful job and has a grace and charm - as well as intellect and physical beauty and would have amazed if she hadn't been on this year's list. I can't imagine she sought it - she has through-the-roof approval ratings and she helps sell magazines. That's part of capitalism for those of you who see everything as liberal conspiracies and "Kool Aid drinking". Can't you at least come up with a fresh way to articulate your stupidity and anger?

Boston is nothing but full of haters.......they hate everyone in this town: Blacks, Asians, Democrats, Republicans, Hispanics, Immigrants, students, out of staters, every non-Boston athletic team, all 50 states, hipsters, preppies, the Ivys, state schools, gays, lesbians, bi's and transgendered, the police, the fireman, the unions, teachers, each other and just about everyone and everything else. Who's drinking the Kool-Aid? I realize that they like to refer to themselves as "crusty", but that's just an excuse for spewing hate. Beauty can come from within as well as without. Maybe some introspection wold be in order.......

I had an argument with a colleague who ranted on the different connotations and deeper meanings of the word "beautiful." I think that Michelle might be a beautiful person to those who know her personally, as is any any wife, mother, or friend. But those were the standards, I can bet that my friend is the most beautiful person, any time, any where.
Let us admit it. Michelle is NOT beautiful.
Period.
And she will still be unbeautiful had she been a "white."
