Boston group backs Notre Dame invite to Obama
A Boston-based group of Catholics is trying to build support for Notre Dame's invitation for President Obama to give the commencement speech on Sunday.
That decision has been criticized by bishops and others who oppose honoring Obama when his positions on abortion and stem cell research, among other issues, conflict with church teachings.
But today, Catholic Democrats launched a website that includes a "statement of support" petition that in praises Catholic colleges that "thoughtfully engage students – and indeed all Catholics – to think critically about matters of faith and public policy."
The site also includes a video that highlights Obama's faith and polls that show Catholic support for the president.
"Our network of supporters across the country have joined together in support of excellence in Catholic higher education, and of Notre Dame in particular, against the kind of extremist attacks we've all heard," Patrick Whelan, president of Catholic Democrats, said in a statement. "We are providing another perspective - one that reflects the mainstream view of Catholics - to shed light on this fabricated controversy. Our goal is to provide our fellow Catholics with the resources and information needed to bring some rationality back to the public debate."
"Catholics voted for President Obama by a larger percentage than the general population and they continue to support him because of his actions on the issues they care about most - including the economy, health care, poverty, torture - issues that reflect values of Catholic Social Teaching," added Steve Krueger, national director of Catholic Democrats. "We hope that our efforts will promote some balance in the public square and will direct attention to the Catholic sensibility of bringing both faith and reason to bear on the moral issues of our time.

And now, Gaudete, KJR, RobA and the other "devout" will rail against these fine (and sane) people whom they will disparage as CINO's. In 3....2....1....
As an alumni of Boston College and a Catholic, I see nothing wrong at all with the President speaking and receiving a degree from the University of Notre Dame. In fact, I am more ashamed of the American Bishops who oppose this.
Obama's faith? What faith? How many times has he been to church since the election?
Obama wasn't attending Reverend Wright's church for the religion.
"Extremist attacks"? From the Church hierarchy? "Mainstream view of Catholics"? This group is a hoot - nothing Catholic about them.
This is why my family left the Catholic church and joined the Episcopal church which is Anglo Catholic. The Episcopal church is tolerant of others views.
I come from a long line of Catholics which include Nuns and Priests If we were to visit the history behind some of the doctorates of the church we would see how very archaic and out of step with truth they are. Reasons for imposing and taking the Bible out of context to best the church is not in the interest of its members..
Obama has taken a hardline stand supporting abortion. He even voted against the born alive protection act. His actions are clearly incongruent with the teachings of the Catholic Church and almost all other Christian denominations. There is nothing out of context or hypocritical here.
The official stance of the Angleican chursh is anti-abortion also. How can you call support for a medical procedure tolerance, you people amaze me.
Hmmm. Catholic Democrats.org. Their Pope is Ted Kennedy, and the cardingal is John Kerry. Now that's faith you can believe in.
Are the catholic Democrats actually Catholic?
Will Obama bow to the King of Saudi Arabia again?
Will Americans and the media finally relaize that speaking slow and pausing a lot does not mean you are smart. It means you don't know what you are doing.
Obama get the invite and then tell them, "Thanks, but no thanks..."
Stupid cultists.
On the left apparently thinks that only those who agree with him should express their opinions. Sorry, on, not intimidated. Since you were #1, I guess you were even more obsessive-compulsive in replying than those you name.
Anyone else check the Founders of so-called Catholic Dems? first 2 names: Victoria Reggie Kennedy and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. 2 others: James Roosevelt and Tom O'Neill. all famous as democrat pols, but not for their burning Catholicism. Can anyone say 'Kennedy Front Group?' All of the Founders have
mini-biographies; none of them list what parish they belong to and attend every week and undboutedly contribute 1% of their income a la John Kerry.
"Catholics voted for President Obama by a larger percentage than the general population and they continue to support him because of his actions on the issues they care about most - including the economy, health care, poverty, torture - issues that reflect values of Catholic Social Teaching," added Steve Krueger, national director of Catholic Democrats."
Notice Steve forgets abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, even more dear to piouis Catholics. Also, Krueger was the former director of Voice
of the Faithful, which shows that all along that was a front organization for the democrats, as many suspected.
Aileen says the Catholic Church is intolerant, thereby showing that she is intolerant of orthodox Catholics. Abortion is a grave evil; it is right to be intoleratnt of grave evil, and those who teach and force its legality on society.
My question is what has Obama done so far that makes him worthy of an honorary degree? Maybe he will tell us exactly what has been accomplished by his administration in his celebrated first 100 days, besides the fact that he continues to blame the previous administration. As a person who wanted to see real change, all we have gotten is a fake smile and lip service and wanting bigger and more restrictive federal agency's and laws. The founding fathers of this country are rolling over in their graves with what is going on.... so much "for the people by the people"
Left the cathiolic church? Wow when it gets too tough go somewhere easier.
I am amazed too. If Notre Dame was a state run university fine but its a Catholic College. Obama would be better served to go to Umass- they love liberals there.
Great -a group of superstitionists has decided not to be as wacky as members of their cult- what do the astrologers and Wiccans think?
Why can't we stand up for what we beleve in? This is america right?
You believe that abortions are ok…. I don’t agree with you, so what. The Catholic Church does not agree with obama… ND in a catholic institution therefore they should not honor him…end of story.
What if ND wanted to honor Ron Jermey...would the Catholic Church have a say?
Catholic schools like Notre Dame should quit the pretense, and in the name of truth in advertising, stop calling itself Catholic. Ditto for the so-called Catholic democrats--oxymoron. Do you believe in each and every article in the Catechism of the Catholic Church? How bout these?
2246 It is a part of the Church's mission "to pass moral judgments even in matters related to politics, whenever the fundamental rights of man or the salvation of souls requires it. The means, the only means, she may use are those which are in accord with the Gospel and the welfare of all men according to the
diversity of times and circumstances." Sanctity of life in the womb is one of "the fundamental rights of man."
2242 The citizen is obliged in conscience not to follow the directives of civil authorities when they are contrary to the demands of the moral order, to the fundamental rights of persons or the teachings of the Gospel. Refusing obedience to civil authorities, when their demands are contrary to those of an upright conscience, finds its justification in the distinction between serving God and serving the political community. "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." "We must obey God rather than men":
When citizens are under the oppression of a public authority which oversteps its competence, they should still not refuse to give or to do what is objectively demanded of them by the common good; but it is legitimate for them to defend their own rights and those of their fellow citizens against the abuse of this authority within the limits of the natural law and the Law of the Gospel."
Abortion is "contrary to the demands of the moral order [and] to the rights of persons," to wit, the unborn baby.
Yes, non-violent civil disobedience, like those note conservatives Martin Luther King jr and Mahatma Gandhi.
diversity of times and circumstances."
I live a block and a half from an abortion clinic.
While I myself think abortion is the most sad of choices for a woman, I have noticed that some are basically still children themselves. I cannot judge their situations.
What strikes me the most is that the regular protesters, motivated by their different religions, mostly carry signs that say that abortion kills. Never ever have I seen a sign that says anything about being AGAINST RAPE, INCEST and WAR that damages the lives of our children already living. NOT ONE WORD about supporting SEX EDUCATION is ever seen on the signs either.
Abortion is a response to a global problem that is ignored. That only women/girls are left with the choice that ALL of us should be concerned about. Is it because the religions teach Eve was the first to sin?
President Obama is not for abortion but, understands why women seek its use.
If he is not able to give a speech to graduating Catholics, I see that many more Catholics will have reason to be dissatisfied with a religion that is only interested in it's own flawed interests. That being, more children to convert to a woman demeaning organization unless you are the Mother Mary herself, who started out as a pregnant single one at that. A religion that does not hold it's men responsibile for the reasons behind MOST abortions.
That said, why not promote the quality of life that already exists. Making it easier for a woman to bring a new life into the world without shame, without abuse.
Isn't it ironic that MOST Catholic nations are poverty stricken embarassments or, didn't you notice??
Notre Dame is Catholic in name only. I am sure they will cover up the crucifix when the main muslin president speaks. (just like at Georgetown). They would not want to offend our jihadist prez.
Someone should ask the annointed one if it would have been ok for his mother to abort him. Oh no abortion wouldnt have been right then becuase liberals would not have the muslim king.
Interesting comments. So many people utterly lacking logical thought, tolerance, or comprehension. Yes, I'm talking about the liberals.
This is really quite simple. The Catholic church is not a Democracy. You believe and follow the strictures of the institution. If you don't, you can leave. Obama disagrees with many teachings of the Catholic church. Notre Dame is a Catholic University. Giving him a high profile forum in which he may criticize your beliefs and teachings doesn't make much sense, really. Particularly when that isn't tolerated within the church community.
That said, while I rarely read or comment on these postings, on the occasions that I do it never ceases to amaze me how you (i'm assuming Liberals/Democrats) can critcize the Catholic Church for being so irrational and intolerant, when you can't even point to an ideology other that 'agree with whatever I tell you'.
And of course, I *love* when the atheists chime in. You folks are just a hoot.
This is from ontheleft in response to my post on another blog citing his hypocracy for his position on torture and his support for abortion:
Posted by KJR May 7, 09 11:25 AM
There is no such thing, KJR, as the torture of unborn children. Doesn't exist. Your absurd references to the same are, as usual, your lame way of attempting to deflect attention from your own blood lust and hypocrisy. If Jesus were alive today, you would applaud his torture and execution.
Posted by OnTheLeft May 11, 09 04:22 PM
ontheleft has taken the term "radical" to a new level.
I am impressed however that he knows what "CINO" refers to... This Boston Group who supports Notre Dame? Just the same old dissenters who are part of the VOTF crowd who think they are doing to change Church doctrine... they too shall pass...
What is nice to see however, is how this Notre Dame debacle has exposed the many, and the Church will become much stronger because of it.
Unborn persons have a right to life and should be protected. This is what the Catholic Church teaches.
President Obama promoted funding for overseas abortions and embryonic stem cell research in his first 100 days in office. Prior to becoming president, 100 % of his legislative votes were against the rights of unborn babies.
Notre Dame is a Catholic university. It should not honor anyone that contradicts basic moral teachings of the Church. Every Catholic college is forbidden to do this and were told so by the U.S. bishops. But, Notre Dame has decided to give President Obama an honorary degree.
While we should respect the office of the president, we should reject the decision of a Catholic university to honor the most pro-abortion president in history.
The ultimate in arrogance. A group of so-called democrat catholics who have nothing to do with the actual issue are going to try to insert themselves into the issue where they are not wanted.
Last time I checked, Notre Dame was no where near Boston nor does it care about this group's opinion.
I wonder what makes this group think that it's opinion matters? Oh, right... KENNEDY.

Exuse me but this country is loaded with single moms who arent hiding their heads in shame. And as a society we do try to hold the men accountable for their actions its called court ordered child support.

Other than Vatican City which is a very rich little country, there is no other Catholic nation or a offical Christian one, but there are a lot of official muslim ones that are a toilet.

Muslin? We'll presume you meant Muslim on that one. Jihadist? Anointed? King? Listening a bit to Rush Limbaugh, are we? You managed to post an entire entry devoid of not just fact but of any semblance of rationality or even coherence. Care to offer anything to back up that bit of nonsensical drivel, or do you prefer to stick out your tongue and blubber "nah-nah-na-nah-nah" in a sing-song delivery.
Posted by gaudete May 12, 09 02:55 PM
Actually, Gaudete, simply a matter of timing. You may be projecting your own obsessiveness, as you righties really do seem obsessed with this president, with the fact that he doesn't bow down to you, with the fact that most of your fellow Catholics don't agree with you, and the additional fact that most of your fellow Americans don't agree with you. Of course, you perpetually complain that you're oppressed by those who don't agree with you. Did I suggest that you shouldn't speak your opinions, Gaudete? Or did I suggest that you would rail against these very decent people? Which was it? And, Gaudete, abortion is not an intrinsic evil. Torture and the mass murder known as war are intrinsic evils. Aiding and abetting the rape of children is an intrinsic evil.
Posted by KJR May 12, 09 04:03 PM
Actually, KJR, I know some real Catholics - those that live a life in which they work for social justice for all. It is people like you who are catholic in name only. Dissenters? That's pretty arrogant - anyone who disagrees with you is a dissenter? Are you some sort of moral authority, KJR? Because your hierarchy most certainly has no moral authority. KJR, you cannot engage in child rape and its cover-up and claim moral authority. Your hierarchy did exactly that. In the meantime, you take your radical reactionary beliefs to an old level - roughly the 11th century (CE), to be precise. BTW, KJR, even though it rhymes with "democracy", it's spelled "hypocrisy", not "hypocracy". As in "hypocrite". As in the modern-day Sadducees such as yourself who would, as I pointed out, applaud the torture and execution of Jesus were he alive today.
As a Catholic, I am shocked that anyone who truly believes in the sanctity of life from the moment of conception can support Obama speaking at a Catholic University. We are more concerned about saving the whales and other forms of animal life than human life. Catholics have a right and an obligation to live the tenets of our faith. You can't divorce your faith from your stand on morality and when political decisions are made that oppose those values, you must defend what is morally right. Catholics have a right to their views and Obama's policies are diametrically opposed to the morals of our faith.Furthermore, why do we support th right of a mother to choose but not the right of a doctor or nurse who object to abortion to choose not to perform the procedure. Obama supports legislation that prevents theor choice. There is too much hypocrisy.
The issue is whether a Catholic university should honor a pro-abortion President who has been a strong supporter of the "Freedom of Choice Act" and Partial Birth abortion. It is not a question of engaging in debate. The question is whether a Catholic university should honor the pro-abortion side of the debate. Can a Catholic university have a neutral position on abortion?
The folks at Notre Dame who agreed to have Obama speak should follow the orders of their superiors in the Catholic church. I agree with gaudete, that the time of Catholic Universities calling themselves Catholic is over. The unfortunate truth is, with the possible exception of schools run by the Jesuit order, the antagonism between free thinking and religious devotion has become too great, the tension too pronounced, to allow the institution to fulfill either of the promises that its name intimates. Seekers of "Holy Truths" should go to the Church, and seekers of the "Light of Reason" should go to University.
And those who blindly follow paths laid by others probably shouldn't set foot in either.

Can you ever stop being a complete tool?
He voted against the bone alive protection act because it was NEVER NEEDED. They already have a law against this, it is called 1st degree murder. The born alive protection act was a poor excuse to set up a law suit to take to the supreme court to overturn roe vrs wade, EVERYONE knows this fool.
Who is to defend the unborn's (heartbeat included) right to life? Sadly, it should be the catholic church. I am disappointed in ND and the simple yet poor decision made by the church. Clearly, the church has lost its spiritual center. As people, we care more about water-boarding vs. protecting the rights of the unborn.
No offense, but if you are a true Roman Catholic then you would agree that Obama does NOT belong there. As for the person who said they are a graduate of Boston College, lets just say everyone I meet from BC are fake Catholics.
Obama honors his religion but if it funny how many fake Catholics there are in this world. Do you go to church, or are you one of those who only attend services on Easter and Christmas? Be honest, you just want Obama there because he is Obama. This is not about being a die hard democrat, it is about the views of the Catholic Church which that man does not honor.
I am willing to bet that most of the people who are "outraged" at ND's decision to have Obama give a speech and receive an honorary degree were George Bush supporters...am I right with that assumption?
Bush sent thousands of brave men and women to Iraq where many lost their lives in a war that was all about a personal vendetta...but go ahead and demonize Obama for being pro-choice - fortunately you people are a dying breed...talk about hypocritical...
I went to ND and I am happy to see that the school is going in the right direction - I actually thought is was too extremist Catholic when I attended...and I went to Catholic schools my entire life...
On the left,
I will begin with those things on which we agree: "Mass murder," yes, intrinsically evil, including the killing of pre-born babies. Torture, yes, intrinsic evil. The only recent question is, is waterboarding torture? Not compared to bamboo shoots under finger nails, drilling teeth, etc. Aiding and abetting child abuse? Yes, intrinsic evil. this is a police matter; why aren't you barking at the cops and DA's in the various jurisdictions to do their job??
Correcting spelling mistakes of 2 commenters? =sign of a failed argument, from a once decent opponent.
I could not possibly care less if most of my fellow Catholics and Americans disagree with me. The culture of the US has become a cesspool because of the opinions which you and yours hold; those Catholics and Americans opinions
are less than worthless to the Church; in fact, they are proof that the orthodox Church is correct.
My fellow conservatives, the correct name from now on for that 2 bit college in Indiana is Notre (Our) Shame, not Dame--our Dame, our Lady, left the house long ago. The only language they will understand is if you do not send your kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews, and urge all your friends to do the same.
From my experience, 3 local Catholic colleges, while not perfect, are better: Providence College, Assumption in Worcester, and especially St. Anselm in NH.
BOSTON GLOBE WROTE: "Catholic Democrats support Obama's speech at Notre Dame"
Are you joking? Catholic Democrats vote for abortion and against all limits to abortion rights. Why would they oppose anything Obama says including infanticide?
What a stupid story... I assume it was create to fool readers into thinking that real Catholics support Obama's pro-abortion stance. Complete nonsense.
Bush was the commencement speaker at Notre Dame in 2001 and he is pro-death penalty, which is also against Catholic beliefs. I understand the argument of only having someone who aligns with the beliefs of the Church be the commencement speaker, but they have not abided by that in the past. I don't think there are many politicians who would be appropriate. In any case, I highly doubt that the abortion issue will be part of Obama's speech and there are many ideals that he believes in that DO align with the church...
Notre Dame is a university above all else and the best universities encourage debate and the exchange of many different ideas and beliefs, even if they do not agree with all of them. A good education can't be achieved if students are sheltered from this. I think Notre Dame recognizes this and that is why they haven't let Obama's stance on abortion affect their decision.
A truly academic institution that is devoted to intellectual discourse regarding the most controversial topics - ie abortion - should allow for just that - discourse. Obama's presence ideally would allow for a meaningful discussion. Catholics are not sheep and have the right to discuss these issues freely.
I am not a Bush supporter and i think Notre Dame is stupid for giving him this honor. Give it to someone who has accomplished something good. When you look
at who is for this it has to be Kennedy lovers or the ones who voted for Dukakis. Which by the way Massachusetts was the omnly state that voted him in by a landslide. So look at how idiotic the people are in Mass as they keep voting mumbles Manino and Mumbles Frank into office
Obama is moving to the right so fast he's making my head spin!
Last year at this time he was accepting NARAL's endorsement in his campaign against Hillary Clinton.
Recently, he announced that abortion is a "moral issue", backed away from FOCA, let stand many restrictions against embryonic stem cell research, and forbade states to use Medicaid money to pay for pregnancy termination.
This time next year he'll be saying the Rosary in front of Planned Parenthood.
Paul Bradford, Pro-Life Catholics for Choice
I can't help but notice that to oppose anything concerning obama, you are labeled a extremely, radical ,racist by the media . And yet this same media one year ago praised those who opposed bush. living proof of media bias
When I think of Notre Dame, I won't be thinking of Knute Rockne or a once grande Catholic institution. I will think of the "don't wanna be Catholic hypocrites in the administration, the hypocrites in the graduating class of 2009", hypocritical alumni who placed "political correctness" ahead of Catholic Church Dogma by hosting the baby killer, American apologist, liar, and student of Saul Alinsky" - Barack Hussein Obama. I hope all you pre-law, pre-med, liberal arts, and business school graduates have a good time in the Obama volunteer corps and enjoy working for wages dictated by the fascist you applauded. All of you have disgraced yourselves for eternity.Joe Pop
