Cheney stays on offensive
When he was in office, Dick Cheney rarely spoke out and was sometimes absent, ensconsed in the proverbial undisclosed location.
Now, the former vice president seems to be all over TV, defending the Bush administration on national security in particular and lobbing critiques of President Obama on a range of issues.
Today on Fox Business Network, Cheney said he disagreed on the Obama team's approach to the auto industry, saying he would have allowed the companies to file bankruptcy.
While acknowledging that the financial rescue was necessary, he said that Obama is now going too far in trying to help other sectors of the economy: "I worry that the current situation is a set of circumstances where the administration is using the excuse of the economic difficulties in order to significantly broaden the power and authority of the government over the private sector. I think that’s a huge mistake," he said in the interview airing at 6 p.m. EDT.
Cheney also repeated his assertion that the "enhanced" interrogation of terror suspects, including waterboarding, did not amount to torture.
"Bottom line is we successfully defended the nation for seven and a half years against a follow-on attack to 9/11. That was a remarkable achievement. Nobody would have thought that was possible, but it was. I believe it was possible because of the policies we had in place, which they're now dismantling," he said.
He also voiced his fear that Obama's policy changes are endangering the country, and his broadside against Obama's plans to close the Guantanamo Bay prison camp.
“I think it’s a terrible idea," he said, according to excerpts released by Fox. "… The ones that are remaining, about 245, are the hardcore, the worst of the worst. They’re cases have been reviewed, they were given a review down at Guantanamo, and they were kept in custody because we believe they constituted a threat to the United States.
“I think they need to keep Guantanamo open," he added. "I think it’s a mistake to try to close it. I think if you didn’t have it, you’d have to invent it. If you bring those people to the United States, I don’t know a single congressman who is going to stand up and say, 'Gee, send me some terrorists. I’d like to have some Al Qaeda-types living in my district.' That’s not going to happen.”
Cheney is also scheduled to give a high-profile speech on May 21 to the American Enterprise Institute in Washington on "a blueprint for keeping America safe."
"Many questions linger: What type of information did enhanced interrogation methods yield? Were lives saved as a result? Could that intelligence have been effectively collected by other means? How effective was the terrorist surveillance program in detecting the threat of Al Qaeda and its operatives in the post-9/11 period? Will inhibiting these procedures cost more American lives?" AEI said in its invitation.

News from the Washington Bureau

Guess Dick wouldn't have to have worried about torture of Americans personally; since he evaded the draft successfully three times during the Vietnam War.
He is a disgusting embarrassment to our country.
The guy is the worse representative of the United States, ever.
Why is he sending his daughter out, she was not in the administration of lil'bush or Obama or any president since Washington. She is just fed by taxpayers during her fathers job as !Vice! president. So other than eating and listening to daddy complain and then regurgitating it, there is no news here other than that a Sith Cat is de clawed and covered in water. Too bad this is another waste of time that a online "newspaper" that has red letters that becins with C, uses tabloid journalism to say she 'slapped' Obama, but left out she was no where near him physically and in fact just trash talking to a reporter for her daddy. Were are in trouble every time this "Ex Vice President" and profiteer has to open his trap.as a country we voted for him to close. YOUR FIRED! get it, now take your stuff and go home. Were still paying you till you die, isn't that enough. I am an independent and voted that way. I hope the best for the country and the world. Spawn of an Ex Vice is a unworthy opinion.
It is plain and simple. The only reason why he keeps going defending his torture policy to the public is because he is afraid of being prosecuted for his war crimes. I would very much like to ask him, "Who would Jesus torture?"
#1, how is he an embarrassment to this country, talk about embarrassment what
about Bill Clicton, that is truly an embarrassment to me. I am glad Obama win.
his color put some excitment into this world.
I guess the only thing that will wake up the American people in general and liberals specifically is mushroom clouds over our cities. You think 9/11 was a fluke?
We live in a world inhabited by Islamic Extremists bent on destroying the West, and the Bush administration kept us safe while in office. He was so effective that most Americans went back to "sleep" and we are now in the process of undoing all the safeguards put in place.
I was in the military while Jimmy Carter gutted both our Intelligence and the Military and allowed the Soviet Union to make great gains all over the world. Now Obama wears the same set of blinders to the true nature of those that wish to destroy us, and it seems the only thing that will wake us up is a 9/11 type attack...and our enemies are very happy to provide that wake up call.
Just remember, those of you who have treated Bush and Chaney like the enemy, and worked so hard to undo these safeguards... you will have a large responsibility for the spilling of American blood.
It is a fact that the Bush/ Cheney policies were highly effective in keeping us safe which was, afer all, their primary responsibility. The present administration is following in the footsteps of that infamous appeaser Neville Chamberlain and God help us all! Will it take another 60 million lives lost to prove that it is better to be feared? 01/20/13
As always, the former Vice President's arguments are disingenuous and misleading. I would like to hear Mr. Cheney defend point blank the fact that 9/11 occurred on the Bush administration's watch to begin with. It's great that nothing happened afterwards. It's better than great. But the lack of accountability and the boorish, xenophobic, reactionary, paranoid attitude on so many fronts from the previous administration is mind-boggling even today.
Wasn't the Bush/Cheney presidency over? What is Cheney doing still talking? And why are media outlets like the Boston Globe giving him any attention?
The man is a war criminal and he needs to be brought to justice. He and Bush need to be taken to GTMO for questioning. Let's see if they think waterboarding is torture.
Well the best defense is an offense for anyone who is guilty. Isn't that what you've done in the past? And he is the expert on war, with all his deferrments, and experience with torture. The guy reminds me of Mr. Potter on It's a Wonderful Life. He's without a conscience, or any kind of experience with what he claims is best for you. Making money with all his Haliburton, and KBR contractors, while sending your family & friends to war, and setting a challenge to others to torture them because we do. Nice........He is an expert though; on lying, cheating, and stealing. Ask his good buddy Scooter.
Greg O'Mally, you claim that "we" voted for Cheney to close his mouth. Sir Brainless, maybe you didn't notice, but Cheney was not a candidate for re-election this last time. The two times he ran, we (you and I) elected him our Vice President.
Now he is doing what any good citizen of the US should do, offering his unvarnished, educated opinion to his commander in chief, based on his vast experience, on what is best for the US, especially in defense matters. At least he is doing it on behalf of the classy, silent President GWB, as opposed to
Prez Clinton, who violated all historical protocol and custom by criticizing his successor, even while we were at war =traitor.
Gaudete, you can't even see the irony in your own statement?
>
That's EXACTLY what Cheney is doing and we are still at war, no?
TRAITOR. and a loathsome individual too. Nice combination.
as far as my safety goes, I would take cheney over biden, he's a total moron.
I agree, Chaney is still offensive. Somewhat less of a threat now that he doesn't have a private Army do do his bidding.
Cheney is a traitor who just continues his fear-mongering. 911 this and 911 that-notice how everything stems from 911? Maybe there should be an independent investigation into such an obvious inside job. Why do you think "they kept us safe" for 7 years? You really think that a bunch of Islamists in caves outsmarted the entire intelligence community? If you believe that, I suppose you're easily convinced that steel simply evaporates, concrete breaks unaided into 50 micron dust and buildings that haven't taken a plane strike fall neatly into their own footprint at freefall speed. Gimme a break.
So, it's not torture to kill an unborn child but is beyond heinous to obtain information from a blood-minded terrorist? Can't stand McCain but I'd still would never vote for NObama. Thank GOD for Dick Cheny.
Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both. Benjamin Franklin ..
Hey, David P: 9-11 WAS a fluke! Security broke down with gaps everywhere, after the White House didn't seem much concerned about the "Bin Laden Determined to Strike US" memo that went to Bush the month before, while he was on one of his month-long vacations. We seem to forget that it was Bush and Cheney "protecting" the country when the world's deadliest terrorist attack happened.
Also don't forget that Bush and Cheney sent how many Americans to Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001? Al Quaida has had plenty of American targets in their part of the world., haven't they?
God Bless Mr. Cheney
Pure and simple, the man is an absolute maniacal, egotistical, unscrupulous and coldhearted serpent.
Gaudete,
I am not certain Cheney should be branded as an individual who is offering an "educated opinion." Like any other politician, there are underhanded motives to what you consider to be his "vast experience." The man is a liar. I am not sure how you can confuse these characteristics with the fact he had a heavy hand in fabricating that Iraq had WMD.
An incursion occurred because a lot good citizens gobbled up and were bamboozled by the Bush administration's fallacious message. Chalk it up to history. It's another senseless invasion all in order to spread "democracy" to those who live a totally different existence. Sure Saddam wasn't a nice fella, however there are myriad dictators like this in Africa. Why aren't they a priority to eliminate? But I suppose that your beliefs create the reality that you see. Rock on Sir Brainless and keep spreading that American version of love and acceptance.
I respectfully disagree with the statement that Dick Cheney is "offering his unvarnished, educated opinion". I am also an educated person, and I do not now and never have agreed that torture, secrecy, and government surveillance of the citizenry are virtues for America. He is on a relentless tour touting the efficacy of Bush administration methods. His message is that torture works. These are not simply helpful critiques; these are not just an influential citizen's altruistic opinions - they are a defense of the indefensible.
OK, so there hasn't been a terror attack on our soil since 9-11. The 9-11 attack occured under the Bush teams watch. There hasn't been a massive financial falure or morgage debacle since last summer either. The Bush - Paulson team created the Tarp giveaway. The Bush administration sent pallet loads of $100 bills to Iraq most unacounted for, we lost 4600+ troops in Iraq, we destroyed the basic fabric that was Iraq, both Iraq and Afghanistan and Iraq are taxpayer debtor wars, Afghanistan still produces Talibans opium, Osama has never been found and has never been linked to Sadaams mischief., ...has anyone mentioned lately there were no WMD's. Keep talking Dick it is painfully clear history shows your administrations efforts were less that the glowing web you weave.
This treasonous slime should be in jail. But, at least while he's out here he is doing all he can to make sure the neo-cons, and by extension the Republicans, remain totally irrelevant in politics. Go Cheney.
@ Stephanie
"#1, how is he an embarrassment to this country, talk about embarrassment what
about Bill Clicton, that is truly an embarrassment to me."
He's an embarrassment because he's not acting like a Vice President. He's acting like he has no class and that he's less of a statesman than he is a partisan hack. A former Vice President should behave with a little class, not just keep going from one talk show to the other blasting the current administration on everything.
Once again, the Left has no idea who the bad guys really are. You only know, instinctively, who you can safely attack. You tough guys know Bush and Cheney won't hurt you so you spew your childish hate on them. Why? They are the "Mummy & Daddy" in your life now.
War Criminal, Murder Dick head Cheney keeps saying that the torture of Gitmo prisoners led to actionable intelligence which saved American lives....I think this is the biggest crock I have ever heard. In fact, I feel as though I heard the same line when he and Rummy were trying to sell the American people on the Iraq war....which we stupidly listened too hook, line, and sinker.
I sincerely hope that President Obama throws this bonehead in prison for the rest of his sorry life.
Dick Cheney is a good man and realizes the media practices "hate crimes" against republicans. I'm glad he is speaking out. Dick Cheney is a patriot and unlike the affeminate Obama, Dick Cheney has kept America safe.
Who has the best America values, Dick Cheney or Obama?
This Obama "fella" whose mother was a communist, who grew up in Muslim Indonesia, whose father was a Kenyan who hated America, who attended a black separatist church, and who said in the NYTIMES that the Arabic call to prayer is the most beautiful sound in the world, who never worked in the private sector. Not exactly the bacground of someone who loves America.
Does Cheney really have any credibility? He was wrong about so many things while he was VP - why should I believe anything he says now?
Why won't the Obama administration release the documents that show the attacks that were thwarted with information gained from enhanced interrogation techniques? They were in a big hurry to release other documents to try and make the Bush administration look bad. If you're going to release one side, fairness would dictate that you release the other so that people can make informed decisions. So much for the post-partisan world that Obama promised.
Paragraph 8, line 2 - the word is "Their" not "They're." I would think that a deputy national political editor would know the difference.
""Bottom line is we successfully defended the nation for seven and a half years against a follow-on attack to 9/11. That was a remarkable achievement. Nobody would have thought that was possible, but it was."
So I guess he would agree that after the 1993 attack on the World Trade Tower by Muslim extremists- Bill Clinton "successfully defended the nation for seven and a half years against a follow-on attack"? And that must have also been a "remarkable achievement", right?
I found it amusing that the same people who bemoan Cheney voicing his opinions had no problem when Jimmy Carter bad mouthed the country and George Bush on his way to getting a Nobel Prize. Bunch of sanctimonious hypocrites, the lot of you.
Obama is the one who is trying "to significantly broaden the power and authority of the government" ? Obama is making us unsafe?
How quickly you have forgotten that you and our president pushed for, and received authority for warrantless wire-tapping on any citizen! No administration has tried to braoden the power of the presidency as the one you were in! Have you also forgotten that the two of you created lies about Iraq to get us into war, and the fact that the companies you have a stake in made HUGE profits from that war! The American people never saw a dime of that money!
We are unsafe because we went into a country that was so dangerous, it only took us a few days to take over!
Never including the cost of war in the budget, making us think that the war is not making us as broke as we actually were. You are a liar and a thief!
Avi Cohen wrote:." Like any other politician, there are underhanded motives to what you consider to be his [Cheney's] "vast experience."" I guess "any other politician would include Pres. Obama, VP Biden, Sec'y of State Clinton, Speaker Pelosi, etc.?
Robert Aboie, where did you come up with that statement about the Obama "fella"?
The black separatist church/Rev. Wright has been well-publicized-so I'll grant you that, but to say that because Obama grew up in Muslim Indonesia somehow means he doesn't love America is nonsense, and the rest of the statement is pointless character assassination. Obama's only been in office for about 110 days and you've already fabricated this whole case against him.
Cheney, meanwhile, served as president for 8 years. So, like him or hate him, he does have a record that he should be held accountable for.
Is this bozo really saying "...I worry that the current situation is a set of circumstances where the administration is using the excuse of the economomic difficulties in order to significantly broaden the power and authority of the government over the private sector". What temerity!!!!! Going back to Nixon, this yahoo wanted to do nothing BUT use the "authority of the government over the private sector". WHY is the press giving him any press at all. If the extreme right wants to air his rantings....let them...but please, put him in a corner & let him ramble on to no one. He should be prosecuted to the fullest - torture, Halliburton, eavesdropping on Amercans....etc. He shows major contempt for the Bill of Rights and the United States of America - he is an embarrassment and brings shame on himself and the country. The fact is: his administration (and make no mistake about it....it was HIS administation) was voted out. Dick, take your football & go home ---your 15 minutes are up.
There were many reports about Cheney developing a messiah complex while in office.
It is now apparent that the reports were correct.
How quickly many of us have forgotten the raw evil unleashed on us on 9/11. It is because our country was run by Bush/Cheney that we were kept safe since that time. Now, as many have fallen asleep and forgotten, our government is dismantling all that was put in place to protect us. I surely fear for our country under this new leadership, not just Obama, but all his appointees, for we are surely weakening and becoming frighteningly pathetic in our patriotism to our great country. To even think that we would speak against our military/government and their necessary actions during a time of war when we have so many of our countrymen and women serving overseas and to put them in harm's way by doing so is incomprehensible. The necessity of torture in war is just that, and to those of you who do not choose to understand this, you need to educate yourself on the meaning of war and start reading up on your history. If you cannot, then you need to shutup!!!
Clinton an embarrassment? Not nearly as embarrassing as being a Republican who stands on a platform of "family values" who gets caught with a dick in his mouth.
I would consider beheading torture, not make-believe drowning.
If he wants us to believe it wasn't torture, maybe he'll submit to having those techniques performed on him or his missuses. There's a PPV show I wouldn't miss.
"The necessity of torture in war is just that, and to those of you who do not choose to understand this, you need to educate yourself on the meaning of war and start reading up on your history. If you cannot, then you need to shutup!!!"

Hey, genius, if you look at our history, you'll find that waterboarding was prosecuted during the Spanish-American War, and that torture (pre-Bush) was never government policy. Torture, with all of its other attendant evils and disadvantages, simply puts our own military at increased risk for retaliatory torture. And only a rank coward sanctions torture, so I'd suggest that it is you, and not the decent human beings who oppose torture, who needs to educate himself or, otherwise, shut up.
The guy he cares too much about this country that's why he can not shut up, and had to be less classy.
Dick Cheney protected America. Lets see what Obama does. Obama looks to have Jimmy Carter syndrome (aka Neville Chamberlin) ... weakly sit down for tea and crumpets with commie leaders, corrupt sheiks, Islamofascists and think that throught the power of his personality they someone will change. Obama is a weak fool.
Dick Cheney protected America. Lets see what Obama does on his watch. How many Islamic republics will have nuclear weapons 4 years from now? Will Israel our ally still exist?
Sure, sure, The Shrub and Cheney kept us from another attack for 8 years after 9/11. What Cheney fails to mention though is that the Bush administration had fair and clear warning BEFORE 9/11 that Al Quaida had the intention of using commercial jet airliners in an attack on the US-and they IGNORED the intelligence provided to them by their senior intelligence team...more than once!!
I can't wait until Cheney is snatched off the streets of some European or South American country and tried for war crimes; because it's obvious Pelosi does not have the cojones to make it happen in the US.
"I would consider beheading torture, not make-believe drowning."

Well, actually, beheading is murder. Waterboarding is real drowning, and it's torture. Always has been and always will be.

what nonsense! you need to read up not only on your history, but also on what real investigators do when a crime takes place. In the case of 911, "they" had the whole thing "solved" the next day with mystery man Bin Laden (who was never found) posted all over the news. Then they took all the physical evidence and sent it overseas to be melted down. After that they stonewalled everybody on setting up an investigative commission for a year, only yeilding when the commission could be stacked with their puppets. When a real investigation of this heinous crime takes place, I'm sure you'll be surprised at who was involved. The first thing a proper investigation team would ask is: "Who benefitted from the crime?". There are many, including Cheney, that fall into this category and continue to hide behind 911as justification for their actions. The neo-con pretext was PNAC, the continuation is the Patriot Act, both treasonous attacks on our liberty in a vain attempt to jusify the means to their end. Patriotism is not equal to blind nationalism, and speaking out against our military (not soldiers, mind you) and government when they err is a necessary component of it. Otherwise you might as well be living in a dictatorship.
"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."
-Ben Franklin
This important, timeless sentence by one of America's greatest statesmen trumps anything these neo-CONS can say.
