Kennedy, Kerry recommend Ortiz
The two US senators from Massachusetts today announced they are recommending Carmen M. Ortiz to be the next US attorney for the commonwealth.
Ortiz, who has more than 20 years of prosecutorial experience, most recently as an Assistant federal prosecutor in the Economic Crimes Unit, would replace Michael J. Sullivan.
She has also served in the US attorney's office's Major Crimes Unit and as the Office’s Grand Jury Supervisor, and also served as an assistant district attorney in Middlesex County. She also worked for the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. The daughter of Puerto Rican natives, Ortiz has been a resident of Massachusetts since 1983 and is the mother of two daughters.
Senators Kennedy and Kerry issued the following joint statement:
“The Committee carefully reviewed the records of dozens of exceptional candidates, and was deeply impressed by the eagerness of so many experienced lawyers to serve the people of Massachusetts. Carmen Ortiz was a standout throughout this process. We believe that her prosecutorial experience, commitment to public service, and insight into criminal justice issues will make her an exceptional United States Attorney. She has lived the American dream, worked hard for every accomplishment she’s achieved, and will ensure that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts is a leader in our community and around the country. We’re proud to submit her name to President Obama.”
