Patrick not completely ruling out interest in high court
A Supreme Court seat isn't just another Washington job, so Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick doesn't appear to be ruling out his interest as categorically.

Patrick, a close friend and political soulmate of President Obama's, was mentioned for a series of jobs in the administration, including attorney general. Each time, he said he was planning to seek a second term as governor.
But now with news that David Souter plans to retire from the high court in June, the spotlight is on Patrick again. But now with news that David Souter plans to retire from the high court in June, the spotlight is on Patrick again. He told the Associated Press today that he plans to run again and doesn't plan to replace Souter.
"I'm 120 percent focused on doing this job right now, and we've got a lot to do and I'm going to stay focused on that," Patrick said.
But asked if that's different from saying he's not interested in an appointment to the court, Patrick demurred, only saying, "I want to do this job, OK? I really do. Thank you."
That suggests if the call comes from the White House, he wouldn't rule out that he would listen.
UPDATE: Patrick's office this afternoon issued a statement: "The Governor is completely focused on the job he was elected to do and is running for re-election. He is aggressively pursuing his reform agenda and managing the state’s finances through this difficult economy. His position has not changed from the countless other times he has been asked this question."
The lives and political careers of Patrick and Obama share quite a few parallels, Patrick campaigned for his friend last year in places as disparate as Iowa and South Carolina, and Obama was even accused during the campaign of plagiarizing Patrick's rhetoric.
There's a long list of potential court picks, however, including former Harvard Law dean Elena Kagan, former Yale Law dean Harold Koh, and former Harvard professor Cass Sunstein -- all of whom accepted other jobs in the Obama administration.

Patrick is such an incompetent governor just thnk what he can do for the country on the Supreme Court.
Deval Patrick is abominably unqualified to be a supreme court justice. Where does the idea that he might be chosen come from...? I think Obama is too intelligent to nominate our governor... it would be Harriet Miers all over again.
Pipe dream. Obama is smarter than to appoint Deval to the Supreme Court. We need some solid liberals on the court, but they need to be qualified...
Deval Patrick, by his comment, "I'm 120 percent focused on doing this job right now..." shows his incompetence to be a Supreme Court nominee. 120 per cent??? What in the heck does that mean? He is so in over his head now, let's not even think another moment about him going to the SC.
It would seem appropriate compensation for the Hope and Change and Puppies and Rainbows motif Patrick lent the campaign of the Great Black Hype.
Maybe he could take Beacon Hill with him. He needs some clerks, and the Commonwealth is safer when folks like DeLeo and Murray *aren't* writing law.
Today is May Day, not April Fool's Day!
I'd be interested to know where exactly the "suggestion" that Deval is a Supreme Court nominee possibility came from. I'm thinking it was put out there by the governor's staff, not by anyone connected to the White House. Is he trying to prompt Obama? I too think Obama is much too shrewd to nominate Patrick. He is ethically comprimised and really just not Supreme Court material in any case. Dream on, Governor! You're stuck with us until next year!
I voted for Patrick for Governor. But I wouldn't support him for SCOTUS. Look, he's been a pretty good and courageous governor. But he's too entrenched politically to serve in a purely academic and apolitical position as Associate Justice.
If bumbling ineptitude, political patronage flying in the face of voters are qualifications, then this is the man for the job!
Patrick is well qualified. He'd make a great supreme court judge.
Please take him.
How many cases has Patrick tried?
OMG. We can only imagine a Supreme Court appointment for Duval Patrick. He has failed as a Governor and would be a disaster on the Court.
If Obama puts Cadilac duval on the Supreme court we are all going down hill. He is not qualified for the job. He is a Lawyer/ Hack. No judgement experience. You know one thing if he appoints Cadilac Duval most of the MA Voters will not vote for OBAMA again. Hopefully Cadiliac goes quietly into night never to be heard from again.
Sorry DeFraud....no court for you. Better bump up thiose unemployment bene's you and a lot of your pals will be collecting soon.....
No intrigue here, Jeilly2. The "suggestion" came from the writer of this article, who decided that the the Gov's response "suggests" something other than what he said. I agree, Obama shouldn't and wouldn't appoint someone who's never been a judge. Bad move when Bush tried it, just as bad now.
What a Hobson's Choice this is.
You put him on the Court, and you have the Supreme Court with Deval Patrick as one of the Justices.
You don't put him on the Court, and he's still Your Governor.
I don't think Obama is tool enough to make his first SCOTUS appointment a political payback. Who do you think he is, Deval Patrick?
The smart money is on Diane Wood anyway.
First of all, here's what he said is that he's committed to "this" job. Since he was speaking about his current job, the subject "this" is his current job, not the Supreme Court (for Foon Rhee to imply otherwise tells me that the author does not have a good command of the English language).
Second, I'm sure you've all exaggerated before, so who cares if he said 120%. I'm sure he realized he was exaggerating.
Finally, I think Healey got a total of 15 votes, Mihos got 5 and that other woman got one (her own)! The rest of you all voted for Patrick, so stop whining!
Yes, I know I'm exaggerated; let the whining begin.
Unfortunately the word qualified is not as important as liberal, or internationalist (international law over national law)
from an empty suit to an empty robe..
He would be perfect! He is well qualified being a liberal and democrat. He is clueless so he should fit right in. Please go and be gone from Ma!
This guy is delusional. It will obviously be a liberal person of color, since those will be the most important criteria for Obama, but he did not even offer Patrick a low level Cabinet post.
In a way it would be fun to watch the hearings, and the famous patrick confused look when they ask him simple questions.
I would say that this candidate for the Supreme court would be a woman and probably Hispanic. That way Protestants could complain that there are none on the Supreme Court.
yep, just what the us needs, an incompetent useless knee-jerk rat liberal with a lifetime sc post.
God help America
Deval would be a good choice. He could balance the incompetent, black, right-wing nit-wit that's already on the Supreme Court.
I really don't think Duval is incompetent. I think Beacon Hill is run by a bunch of morons who think there position is intended to create jobs for friends or friends of friends. If Duval was smart he'd get the hell out of this broken state. Many others have already and there will be more to come. But alas the morons will get their enhanced pensions and will live happly ever after down the Cape in the summer and Florida in the winter, Life is good.
Can you imagine this dim wit on the High Court Louis Brandeis would be rolling over in his grave not to mention Oliver Wendall Holmes Jr. This dim wit of a Governor cannot even effectively govern the Commonwealth .
I realized that the U. S. Supreme Court had become a corrupt joke the day they allowed people in New London to be forced out of their homes so that the land under them could be given to developers. Supreme Court justices no longer are the god-like beings that we once respected. Slimey Deval will fit right in.
It will never happen for Patrick. Why? He can't afford it. Look for him to go the Freddie or Fannie or some other gov/agency where the pay can exceed 2-3 million. One thing is for sure he will not be elected gov.
Isn't qualified to be an B Hussein's appointment. He paid his taxes.
What a laugh! Shows you how out of touch Duh Val is.
Please don't put him on the Supreme Court, he's a bumbling idiot. He's going to be looking for a new job next year anyway. He's going to lose to Tim Cahill if nobody else. He's failed as a governor.
Duval on the Supreme Court????? Give me a break! He can't even govern Massachusetts, or, more importantly, learn from his mistakes. He would be a joke as a member of the US Supreme Court. And I voted for him for governor; actually, I had no choice, considering his competition.
Women are extremely underrepresented on the court. Next pick should be a woman.
Bill Weld - come home; all is forgiven!
No dice, pal. Nothing personal. You're a good man, Gov. But, no dice, no way.
You don't have the legal or intellectual heft to qualify for this post, or even be on a short list.
This ain't about charm or leveraging race for gain. Croniesism would be your only path to greatness here, and Obama doesn't play that game at this level.
So, enjoy the flattering attention this weekend, but report to the Governor's office Monday morning. Try working at being an effective governor. Tha seems more than enough,
It ain't gonna be Patrick.
What's even more frightening that Devolved could even be considered is that Obummer wants someone on the Supreme Court who will "create law" vs. interpreting the Constitution, as the Supreme Court Justices are supposed to do.
I don't think the author even read or listened to what Patrick said. Talk about reaching for a headline.
It's not likely that Obama would appoint Patrick, but if he did, I would bet that the governor would accept for fear of being unemployeed come the next election.
