Kerry says tax lien is clerical error

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor June 3, 2009 01:28 PM

Senator John F. Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign has been slapped with a $819,848 federal tax lien, but his office says it is a paperwork error and the campaign owes no tax penalties.

The Massachusetts Democrat said the Internal Revenue Service mishandled payroll tax forms that he said were correctly filed by his campaign in 2005. "This is a clerical matter, nothing more, nothing less," Kerry spokeswoman Whitney Smith told the Associated Press.

The Washington Times reported the lien today. To read it, click here.

The IRS notified the Kerry campaign in January 2008 that it had failed to file certain payroll tax forms for the 2004 tax year. Smith told the AP that the IRS must have lost the payroll forms since the campaign had filed them in 2005, but the campaign filed them again last year.

Hard to believe!! A Democrat with a tax problem!
Hillary lost 1000 pages on a coffee table , so it's easy to see how th IRS could lose Kerrys tax forms

This is amazing! First you have Pelosi accusing the CIA of lying to Congress, and now you have Kerry claimiing the IRS made a simple $800,000 mistake. Here's the irony. Although they are both likely wrong, if we believe they are both right, isn't this further evidence that the government is ill equipped to run the banks, the auto industry, healthcare, etc?

Lose a Presidential election as a Democrat and you never have have to pay and think it was only 8 years ago. What happened, did Theresa shut him off?

Oh, you bet. That happens all the time. The IRS's dog eats their homework too. Try again John. Of course, we all know nothing will come of this.

Your Honor! This fine gentleman is a politician from Massachusetts! How could anyone even during a playful, humorous moment think him capable of a criminal act? I rest my case!

OF course this $820k is an oversight or a paperwork snafu.

Don't you know who HE is??!

What, they didn't file electronically like everyone else? Of course it's someone else's fault. John Kerry isn't responsible for anything.

Typical Kerry, only little people pay taxes. Funny if I waited a year to pay an 800k tax bill they would most likely arrest me.
Has a Democrat running for president ever paid all his/her bills?

It must be the reason Obama didn't appoint him to Secretary of Defense (or whatever else he was angling for) they knew months ago that he owed taxes. Dang.....now we are stuck with him for at least 4 more years.
