Obama meets Saudi king

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor June 3, 2009 02:55 PM

On the first leg of his second foreign trip in office, President Obama today received a warm welcome -- and another not-so-nice greeting.

King Abdullah hosted Obama at his private farm. "I also want to express my best wishes to the friendly American people who are represented by a distinguished man who deserves to be in this position," the king said before their meeting.

Obama said, "This is my first visit to Saudi Arabia, but I've had several conversations with His Majesty.  And I've been struck by his wisdom and his graciousness.  Obviously the United States and Saudi Arabia have a long history of friendship, we have a strategic relationship.  And as I take this trip and we'll be visiting Cairo tomorrow, I thought it was very important to come to the place where Islam began and to seek His Majesty's counsel and to discuss with him many of the issues that we confront here in the Middle East."

UPDATE: After their private meeting, the White House issued a one-paragraph synopsis:

"President Obama and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia met today and discussed a wide range of issues including Middle East peace, the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan, energy, Iran and other matters affecting the region. The President and the King also discussed the President's upcoming speech to the Muslim world. The President and King pledged to remain in close contact in order to continue to make progress on these and other issues central to the US-Saudi relationship."

But as Obama landed in the Middle East, Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden issued a new audiotape threatening Americans and accusing Obama of inflaming hatred toward the United States by urging Pakistan to launch a campaign of "killing, fighting, bombing and destruction" against Taliban militants in the Swat Valley, where the Islamabad government had agreed to a truce and had allowed the Taliban to impose religious law.

Did O-bow-ma bow to the Saudi king again?

Sucking up to Egyptian and Saudi tyrants is no way to win the Arab street. Who is advising this moron?

Obama is weak and corrupt, and they see it - the civilian casualties being caused by his predator drone strikes in Afghanistan/Pakistan are not helping.

....can't wait for the Bible thumping Crusaders to start spewing their fear laden rhetoric about this trip. Remember, you are a minority in this country now; does that humble you at all? It should.
I am a white, taxpaying, Christian, who believes in peace, and lives by the laws of nature and the universe. Even Severin admitted he was 100% wrong to preach hatred and bigotry.
Bring it on Republican minority. Let the debate begin.

Odumba, you represent what's really wrong with this country. Too many undereducated, ignorant morons.

It is the custom in their country to bow before the king. It is our arrogance that got us into the shaky relationships we're in now.

Just because a man bows, do not think for one minute that the Saudi King is not aware of his might. We are still the United States of America.

The strong move silent and the weak start riots.

There will be massive, high tech military aid to Egypt and Saudi.
No nation will have any air superiority in the region.

One simple question: why is he there? The real unspun reason, not the press release mumbo-jumbo. I think it's for dubious reasons, and that ain't good.

Actually, Obama was on a rescue mission. He was searching for W's balls. The first place he'll look is the Sheik's mantle.

If you're right, then your living standard will precipitously drop. But maybe you would like to spread you're hard earned money around. I for one came from a poor neighborhood and worked my way up to the master's degree level.

You'll also be living in a socialist or facist system where your liberties will disappear. When younger, I thought that without liberty, I could still pursue my objectives. This was until a then wiser person told me that you'll know more about freedom when it's gone.

It's very sad when such a young, inexperienced president is running the country in what may be its most difficult time outside of the Civil War. If you think I'm "one of those conservatives [actually I'm an Inderpendent]"then google the Cloward-Plovin philosophy and see what's really the objective of this government.

Odumba- obviously you didn’t travel much outside the US to see the US’ image now. The man is only trying to restore this country's image and undo what your former president did in the last 8 years. So give him a change. we're in deeper crisis because of all the wars and lack of regulations we've been in the last 8 years. Did you like it then when the former administration was paying 10 Billion a month to finance an unjust the war? for what? what did we get out of Iraq besides killing them? Please don’t tell me 9-11…the ones who responsible for it are still releasing audio tapes.

Why is he going to ARAB nations? Why has he fully bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia? Why do we know little about this Obama? Why hasn't the media done its job? We do know that he has reduced America's standing in the world and has worked hard at trying to tranform America into a second rate country.
47% of Americans didnot vote for him. He has no mandate.

...and Obama thought his election and fame alone would quell Bin Laden. Wrong again. Now you see what Bush was thinking, rookie President. Amateur hour continues...

Hahahaha...."KNOWLEDGE"

Wow...."KNOWLEDGE" thinks all the problems in the Middle East were caused because GWB didn't bow to the Saudi King.

Hey, Obama, where's your outrage over the murder of a uniformed member of the Armed Forces on US soil? Is it because he's a member of your "religion of peace?" Don't want to anger your sovereign master, the Saudi?
You couldn't comment fast enough about Tiller the killer, but you ignore a Muslim terrorist attack on US soil.
I hope all you 'hope and change" people are proud.

I thought the Saudi's were bad and George Bush was criticized for his relationships with them.

So it's different now?

Peter J and Odumba,

@ Craig: "I thought the Saudi's were bad and George Bush was criticized for his relationships with them.

So it's different now?"

Yes, it is different. Obama doesn't have a relationship with the Saudis (no apostrophe). He is visiting them as he has visited numerous foreign leaders. GWB and his family had a relationship (a murky one at that) with Saudi royals vis-a-vis their oil interests. Don't be obtuse.

You're kidding right? Do you really think Obama is the first president to visit a foreign nation? You really think we don't know enough about Obama? I know plenty - I'm just ignoring all the conspiracy theory BS that you must be alluding to. You "know" that he has reduced America's standing in the world? How do you "know" this? Some facts and figures, please.

P.S. A mandate is the authorization to act in a particular way on a public issue given by the electorate to its representative. Since Obama was elected president according to the electoral process established by the U.S. Constitution (you've heard of it, right?), he has a mandate.

P.S.S. 47% of Americana THAT VOTED didn't vote for him. Another distinction you should be aware of.

Good question. Too bad we will never know (or know when it is too late).
He is making a deal with the devil. The arabs cannot and should not be trusted-EVER.

B. Hussein sure is showing his MUSLIM side these days, isn't he?
(As I recall he vehemently DENIED them during the campaign.)
But then again, B. Hussein has totally disappointed his liberal pals on So many levels, hasn't he? Hey, is Gitmo closed yet? How 'bout that war in Iraq? Has he ended it yet?

To joeybagz , Comment 2

I am also a white, taxpaying Christian. I do not live by the "the laws of nature and the universe". The laws of nature? Do you mean the kill or be killed laws? Natures laws are not nice laws. Its either kill for food or run and hide and hope you eat enough in the summer to survive the winter. What laws of the universe? On the scale of the universe-ignoring for a moment the grace of God- do you think our little dirt ball Earth means anything?
I like our laws in the USA - where all are supposed to be equal under the law. The law is not prejudice - only people are. We all must be accountable for our own actions.

If you hate the Bible and call yourself Christian, that's called anti-Christ.
