Obama praises Lebanon vote

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor June 8, 2009 11:10 AM

President Obama this morning issued a positive statement about the election in Lebanon, where a US-supported alliance appeared to keep control of the parliament against the militant group Hezbollah.

Sunday's balloting was seen as a key test between Iran and the US for influence in Lebanon, and came just three days after Obama's much-publicized address to the Muslim world.

"I congratulate the people of Lebanon for holding a peaceful election yesterday," the president said in a statement. "The high turnout and the candidates – too many of whom know personally the violence that has marred Lebanon – are the strongest indications yet of the Lebanese desire for security and prosperity. Once more, the people of Lebanon have demonstrated to the world their courage and the strength of their commitment to democracy.

"The United States will continue to support a sovereign and independent Lebanon, committed to peace, including the full implementation of all United Nations Security Council Resolutions. It is our sincere hope that the next government will continue along the path towards building a sovereign, independent and stable Lebanon," Obama continued.

"Government of the people and by the people sets a single standard for all who hold power: you must maintain your power through consent, not coercion; you must respect the rights of minorities, and participate with a spirit of tolerance and compromise; you must place the interests of your people and the legitimate workings of the political process above your party. Commitment to these principles of peace and moderation are the best means to secure a sovereign and prosperous Lebanon."

How about praising the tens of millions in Europe who are REJECTING Socialists and Leftists principles and voting for Conservatives! Will Obama praise them as well? The conservatives are coming back there and here in America! Before we turn into a communist-type country.

People are stupid if you don't think we had something to do with that

Actually, the election results show no change from the previous election's results, and the only thing that kept them from being worse was a last-minute appeal by the leader of the Maronite Catholic Church.

But I'm sure Obama will try to take credit for it anyway.

Yes, we had little or no effect this time around. Same results as before. I am glad things stayed as is but it is pretty patthetic when we are praising people for electing only a large minority of neo-nazi nut instead of a majority.

I'll be impressed when they recognize the existence of Israel and do not elect and/or support anyone from Hezbollah or Hamas.

Hey "Once Poor"...

In 1776 there was a word for conservatives: TORIES! The Founding Fathers were ALL LIBERAL!

And there was another word for conservative in 1860... CONFERDERATE! Abraham Lincoln was a LIBERAL!

Notice a pattern here? The only thing consistent about conservatives is that they're always on the greedy, racist, anti-American, unpatriotic side of every political argument!

By the way, do you think that anyone in this country should be praising the election in Britain of the british national party candidate? I'm sure you've heard of that party... You know, the one that doesn't allow non-whites? Try to remember that when you're blasting Obama's pick for the Supreme Court.

Finally, you seem a little scared of things that you call socialist. I know your limited brain won't allow you to see any connection, but why don't you try reading the words of Jesus Christ sometime? I'm sure your fascist way of thinking will automatically brand him a communist, because, after all, that was EXACTLY what he was preaching.
