Palin retakes stage, hits Obama's policies

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor June 8, 2009 01:00 PM

She's back.

Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee last year, returned to her job as Alaska's governor and laid low for weeks, avoiding high-profile appearances.

But she made several appearances in New York over the weekend, she's stayed in the first tier of candidates in the early handicapping for 2012, and she's now making the rounds of the cable talking head shows.

Unsurprisingly, she takes a rather dim view of how President Obama is doing.

“A lot of this is wrapped in good rhetoric but we’re not seeing those actions," she says in an interview airing tonight on Fox News Channel's "Hannity" show. "And this many months into the new administration, quite disappointed, quite frustrated with not seeing those actions to rein in spending, slow down the growth of government. Instead Sean, it is the complete opposite. It’s expanding at such a large degree that if Americans aren’t paying attention, unfortunately our country could evolve into something that we do not even recognize. Certainly that is so far from what the founders of our country had in mind for us.”

According to excerpts released by Fox, she also hits Obama on the government's actions on General Motors, which declared bankruptcy last week in hopes of emerging a streamlined company that can survive.

“America is digging a deeper hole - and how are we paying for this government largesse? We’re borrowing. We’re borrowing from China and when you consider that now we own sixty percent of General Motors – or the U.S. government does," Palin says… "But who is the U.S. government becoming more indebted to? It’s China. So that leads you to have to ask - who is really going to own our car industry in America?”

Asked whether she missed the spotlight, Palin replied: “I love my time in Alaska. At the same time though I crave, if not my voice, other voices out there being bold, being strong letting Americans know that those that are concerned about the growth of government and about national security issues, they’re not alone. There are others who are empathizing and more than empathizing are wanting to take action to make sure that economically and physically that our homeland is safe and secure.”

I notice all the G.O.P. carping doesn't say what they would do differently, other than let Chrysler or GM fail. They surely don't talk about the costs in unemployment that will result. They don't talk about how to get the private sector to have the confidence to invest again.

What Obam DID do is get involved EARLY in the process, instead of waiting around for stuff to happen. He pushed the issue to get to the endgame NOW, so the companies can move forward with a plan. Having ANY decision is better than no decision right now.

Easy to complain from the sidelines.

Not my favorite sitting politician, but someone has to begin taking the punches at this Teflon President, since the media is skirting its duty to watch him. Of course any criticism is paramount to racism in the eyes of the Dems, but that is standard procedure for a party that rhetorically victimizes its base in order to fool it into thinking they need big government to save them. Democrat Party = Institutional Racism

I would "LOVE" to get a straight-up (no teleprompters) impromptu (no previously reviewed questions) political-debate between Palin & Obama.

She would crucify him.

The only reason people have a degree of question on Palin (and her political stance/speaking & appearance) is because she was "forced" into being someone she wasn't by McCain's Campaign.
As a proud GOP Member myself, I blamed McCain and still do.

Let Palin be herself....she would leave Obama behind in a blink on world issues, domestic matters and more. Kid yourself not, this is an extremely bright woman and is 150% correct in what she said here.

Only Obama psychofants (Messiah-Bow-Before's) laugh here....

Ted Kenedy graduated from Harvard undergrad and the University of Virginia law school. Joe Biden went to the University of Delaware undergrad and then Syracuse for his J.D. - he was never extremely studious, but surely he can't be compared to Palin. Mumbles Menino is a total hack and I have no idea how comparing a Mayor to a Presidential hopeful works, but even he graduated from Chamberlayne Junior College and UMass Boston.

Palin spent time at 5 different colleges and junior colleges before somehow escaping with a degree in Journalism(!). You're sure you want to get into a debate on intelligence by bringing that spork to a gunfight??

Holy cow.

This thread has been very educational for me. Now I know where all the brain-dead Lefties are gathered - up there in the north east. Vapid comments full of the left wing religion. You all should use your spare time to study history and learn what befell every nation that went left and chose the socialist path. Britain would make a good case study as it swung its ideological pendulum between labour (socialists) and the tories (not socialists). Each spell of socialism has been a feast of 'wonderful' ideas always ending in chaos and a tory government.

Like her or not she is dead on.
The CBO, Ben Bernanke and others have warned that we must concentrate on paying down the national debt.
Folks, China is no longer going to continue to lend the United States $$$ if the value if the dollar keeps going down. Of course if we know the Obama admin they will simply print more $$$ causing the greatest rate of inflation we have ever seen.
This debt we now have is by far too much, with tax revenue down the government needs to decrease spending or increase taxes to pay down the debt. I vote decrease spending even if it means no stimulas and no bail outs.

One has to admit that Palin is politcally savy and puts a good "spin" on the issues, but as we all witnessed in November and in the past few months, she has no depth (knowledge, inegrity, charachter), and will be warmly welcomed back to the political stage by every late-night talk show host, political satirist, and op-ed page editor for her miscues and bloopers. Remember her discussion with Katie Couric about the Soviet Union? Geez......how can Republicans honestly support her?

There are a lot of Big Government lovers on this board. Complaints about George Bush. Bush's deficit was peanuts compared to the current one. Why such hatred for Palin? Because she wants states to run their own affairs?

Why do people want MORE stuff run from Washington? Why? Why are people so infaturated with socialism?

It's freedom this country was founded on. Why not continue with it? Sarah is saying good stuff.

Look at all the "blue states" around this country - they are all indebted up the wazoo. California is bankrupt, NY, MA, and IL are technically bankrupt (remember that states can keep all sort of liabilities off their books). Then look at the states run by FISCAL CONSERVATIVES - Texas, Tennessee, South Carolina etc...prospering, don't need stimulus. The NEW DEAL is bankrupting our country. Now Obama wants to expand it even more and nationalize large swaths of private industry. No better than Chavez in Venezuela. GM and Chrysler deserved to go into bankruptcy where real reform would have happened without all the taxpayer funded relief.

I fear Sarah Palin. The woman can barely string two sentences together and she sounds like she's reading directly from her policy cards. Even the possibility that she could become president should fill everyone with fear. This country barely survived 8 years of George W. and I doubt we could withstand 4 years of her and her "know-nothing" politics. I just wish Obama had been elected at a time when he didn't have to spend 24 hours a day trying to fix a country in crisis.

She's 100% spot on right on the economy. Obama's economic knowledge is 'throw a dart at a balloon'. He lacks even the most rudimentary concept of how to stimulate growth. How's that stimulus package working? The second one? And where are the millions of jobs Obama promised to created? Sorry, folks, you fell for the oldest line in the political playbook- hope and change. I bet you all hope you have a roof over your head in the coming months and have change in your pocket. Lemmings, cliff, die. You know the drill.

Interesting how all of the negative comments attack her personally but don't address the topic of the article. The fact remains that our leader is going to bankrupt this country before his 4 years are up.

Interest rates have already risen past 5.5% slowing any real estate recovery
The stimulus plan which was going to "save 3 million jobs" has succeeded in convining other nations that they don't want any more of our debt
We had to save GM to prevent its bankruptcy (which I will remind you would have been catastrphic for this country) but once we dumped all of our taxpayer $$ into it it goes bankrupt anyway
Now the chosen one wants to ram healthcare reform down our throats to the tune of another trillion

Like Palin or not - someone needs to stand up to these hacks spending our $$

Whenever my credit cards get maxed out and I don't have any $$ left but want to buy something extravagant I ask myself one question - what would obama do? Then I buy three of whatever I was looking at....what could go wrong?

I am always puzzled by those who say that Governor Palin is 'uniformed' or lacking in curiousity' or is some kind of an extremist, who appeals only to a far right fringe of the GOP or to religious conservatives. Yet my liberal friends are always surprised that Palin's bitterest opponents in Alaska are on the far right of the local GOP, and that she could not have got elected without the support of middle-of-the-road Independents, who form the largest block of voters in that state. The are even more surprised that she risked the anger of religious conservatives by protecting the acquired rights of same-sex couples in Alaska. And their heads explode when I tell them that governor Palin was the first Governor to set up a cabinet sub-committe to examine climate change and has the most ambitious 'green' energy policy in the Union. JThe wilful ignorance of liberals never ceasees to amaze me.

you have to love a country where arm-chair quarterbacking can be construed as valid input. We are all entitled to opinions, however, we(the opinionated) did not win or lose the election...Obama was on the winning ticket and Palin was on the losing ticket. Losers have to start early to try and overtake winners(wow, laying groundwork for 2012 already before the world forgets who she is)......Personally I can't remember any elected official who actually acted upon their campaign promises...that includes both those I voted for and those I did not vote for. Yes, I am sure Sarah Palin would completely obliterate Obama in a debate--NOT. Perhaps she could wink him off the stage? Or throw out some more meaningless catch phrases. She was, and apparently still is, nothing more than someone to fire up the base. Instead of running for national office, she should apply to Fox News for a job. Wonder if Fox would pay for Sarah to fly back and forth to Alaska?

In reponse to "LeftOut"'s comment. We have bankruptcy laws in this country, or at least we did. All those people would not be out of work. Yes some would, but the company was way to fat anyway, as Vince Wilfork would say "Point Blank!" The company would have been able to reorganize, the bond holders would not have gotten the shaft that Obama gave them and the unions would have concessions and NOT get a better deal than the bond holders. I may not agree with all of Obama's policies or positions, but I at least see the man doing something to address problems.

2. Chrysler and GM are going in the correct direction. No one to blame but themselves. BO's plan is the same as Geo. Bush (and everyone else's).
3. We ARE overspending. Nearly all of the "economic stimulus" package was Dem pet projects. Only about 5% that's actually to be used for economic spending will be spent before 2011. Pathetic.

Obama inherited this mess, and is doing the best he can. If you saw Bernanke on 60 Minutes last night, you'll see that he knows all the mistakes the FED made in the depression. Palin would make them all over again, and force us into another depression. All these crazy posters are writing from a strictly left or right wing predisposition. If you can't get beyond it folks, you'll never solve anything. I don't care that Bush was Republican or conservative, but we know that we weren't getting the straight story. Whether Obama is right or not, he's running the country, he's not a proxy for his Vice-President, he's smart, and he's giving us the straight story. The Republicans have no answer for any of this - they don't know the first thing, so the complain and whine. It's not good enough.

HAHA- all the red states are prospering huh? That's why the teacher's union in South Carolina almost went on strike to get the stimulus money, b/c idiot gov sanford was about to cut tens of thousands of teaching jobs, and Tennessee is so far in debt they are now trying to tax almost every pro athlete that plays in the state. Most states and the federal government are bankrupt because Bush cut education spending, cut taxes for only the rich and spent hundreds of billions of dollars on a war that we went to under false pretenses!!! Palin is an idiot, as evidenced by her Katie Couric and Charles Gibson interviews where she couldn't even state a Supreme Court decision she disagrees with besides Roe v Wade, or even name a newspaper she reads. So Obama worked his way up from food stamps to graduate from Columbia and Harvard Law, and Sarah Palin needed five crappy schools to get a journalism degree, and u think she could debate him? HAHA! So what if he uses a teleprompter? He has to make 3-4 speeches on different topics a day, and deal with the economy, national security, two wars, health care, etc.... so he wants to make sure he gets his words correct. Bush used a teleprompter too and he still couldn't speak proper English. And in the debates, when he didn't use a teleprompter all pundits(including repubs not on fix news) thought Obama won. lRepubs can bash him all they want, but he is only fixing the repubs mess, b/c it wasn;t just Bush that messed everything up, it was the republican controlled congress who gave him a free pass.
Seriously republicans, u can bash him all u want, but until the repubs in congress actually come up with an idea that's not either 'no' to Obama, cut taxes (when we need the tax money), or have the racists like Newt and Rush(you know these moral people who divorced their wife when the had cancer, or who railed against drug addicts and was secretly one of them) spout off complete BS, you will stay in the wilderness.
I say bring on Palin in 2012, then Obama will get 4 more years, and by the end of his eight year term, our country will be better than ever.

Sarah Palin is easily the smartest woman in politics. Just as she ran circles around Katie Couric in that 2008 interview, so she'd trounce B. Hussein O. in the 2012 election. Remember when Couric asked her what periodicals she read and she stumbled, unable to recall ever having read anything? That was a ploy to keep the DEMONcrats off guard for her 2012 run. And when she quoted Reagan by saying "There you go again" during the VP debate, it was a splendid and poignant way to show that for the Republicans it's still 1980, and any rumors you may have heard about being in the 21st century are LIBERAL nonsense. Um, I mean (consults talking points from RNC) ... SOCIALIST nonsense! Go Palin in 2012!

J.P., you knew that Ted Kennedy was expelled from Harvard for cheating, right?

You knew Joe Biden lied about his academic resume' and was busted for umm, appropriating someone else's literary work as his own, right?

You've heard both men speak in public, right?

You knew Sarah Palin WAS a mayor, right? So was some former presidential hopefulnamed Rudy Gulianii.

We're not debating public intelligence because you've already lost.

Wow, Sarah Palin is back. I think part of the problem with the GOP right now is that they have no leadership and no real agenda or alternative - which in turn has allowed the "de facto heads" like Rush, Cheney , Newt, and Palin, apparently to be in charge of the GOP. Besides "hit and run", "hit and run", the GOP has failed to offer real alternatives, and when they were given the chance to be different, they ran the economy into the ground, saddled the country with wars on two fronts, trampled all over civil liberties, and left the bar so low for the next President that even talking to people can seem like a success.

Unfortunately, there is no one "unifying figure" within the GOP right now because they have leadership problems. Their leaders won't allow new ones who do have the chance to win to develop because they're too busy clinging on to the past or slinging mud at Obama. Until the old (and i do mean "old") guard steps aside, the GOP will be stuck as a bitter sore loser who are stuck behind on the times.

Here is proof that America is great. The village idiot criticizes the president right after she is brief on what to think.

Some observations on James' idiotic comments above:
"This thread has been very educational for me." (If you think Caribou Barbie is anything but a sad joke, you're one of the numbnuts who could certainly use some education.)
"Now I know where all the brain-dead Lefties are gathered - up there in the north east. Vapid comments full of the left wing religion." (Brain-dead would be a better label for the right-wing sheep the GOP recruits with oooh-scaaary stories about government coming to take your guns or make you divorce your sister if you vote Democrat. Oh, and look up"vapid.")

I fear that the NEOCONS will actually bring her back to the RNC convention. How could our party keep sinking, sinking, sinking, thinking that she is the best we can offer? So, she is emulating the rhinestone cowboy in NYC. Its not about her intelligence or political savvy. The woman just doesn't have an original thought, let alone the strength of character / experience to play out a presidential term. She flunked interviews 101, world leaders 101, and had a couple of snappy comments at the RNC. Why do the NEOCONS keep bottom dragging for a party leader. Its always easy to lay out a critique as an armchair quarterback. She couldn't even carry Obama's tool belt. Telling America that they are coming for your guns, won't sell you ammo, gays will be leading your children astray, saying god bless America just doesn't make it anymore. How about Palin - Quayle in 2012, now thats a winner!

There’s no great mystery about the motives behind this deliberate misnaming. 'Democrat Party' is a slur, or intended to be – a handy way to express contempt. Aesthetic judgments are subjective, of course, but 'Democrat Party' is jarring verging on ugly. It fairly screams 'rat'.

Democrat Party = Change you can smoke
