Romney takes Obama bashing to airwaves

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor June 2, 2009 06:22 PM

Mitt Romney is taking his bash-President Obama-on-national-security tour to national TV.

He pulled no punches in a speech on Monday, accusing Obama of jeopardizing America's safety by cutting missile defense and other spending and of unnecessarily bad-mouthing America during a "tour of apology" during his initial trips abroad.

The former Massachusetts governor is expected to make much the same case in an appearance tonight on Campbell Brown's "No Bias, No Bull" show on CNN that starts at 8 p.m. EDT tonight, and Wednesday morning in an interview with Matt Lauer on NBC's "Today" show at Faneuil Hall in Boston.

UPDATE: "Any nation's going to make mistakes," he says in the CNN interview. "But one thing's for sure and that is that America's greatness, America's contributions towards peace and towards security, towards prosperity for people of the world, far overshadow the mistakes."

"Playing to the crowd, trying to get Europeans who are critical of America to think better of us because we criticized ourselves is not the way to go," he adds. "Standing up for freedom and democracy and indicating that we're going to stand with our friends around the world is the right course. So, sure, reaching out to other nations and to Muslims in particular is a wise course. But making the headline of the trip apology and denigration of America -- that's the wrong course."

Romney's TV appearances will be while Obama is headed abroad on his first trip as president to the Middle East. So the White House can't be too happy with the criticism. But Romney won't be flouting the unwritten rule that Americans should not criticize the president while they're abroad.

Well Foon, you are making the case for a Obama/Romney faceoff in 2012. You seem convinced of it. Most BDC readers already despise Mitt and write him off as a flip-flopping opportunist. So your slant against him is probably wasted here. Funny thing is, we'd be better off with him at the helm right now - something the GOP could not have predicted back when they nominated McCain.

The unwritten rule is that elected officials, ie Congress, should not criticize the president while he is abroad because it undermines his authority to speak for the government of the US. Private citizens, ie "Americans", should feel free to criticize the President of the United States whenever they damn well please.

About a year ago, wasn't Romney the guy who was going around and scolding Democrats for criticizing Bush, the war, and his failed policies, stating that the Democrats were being "disrespectful" of their President.

Hypocricy at its best.

So criticizing President Obama is "bashing"? I don't recall any similar headlines about criticisms of President Bush when he was in office. (Remember, back then it was said that "dissent is patriotic". I guess that's changed now.)

And I guess it's only considered "bashing" when a Democrat President is criticized by a Republican. Rather that bad-mouth Mr. Romney criticisms, why not check the validity of what he is saying? Course, that might not be a good idea since Mr. Romney's accusations are correct.

No one in their right mind would listen to Romney, so it's apparent his speech is aimed at appealing to the far-right, evangelical wing of the Republican Party which, ironically, is the Republican wing most distrustful of Mormons. Interesting strategy, Mitt. But, like 1994 and 2008, 2012 looks to be a mirror image. Three strikes and you're out, Mitt!

Oh great. Helmitt will be taking it to the air. Remind me who his security advisor is? Cofer Black? Yes, the guy who didn't get Osama and jumped ship to a plum role at Blackwater Security.

What's the former governor's experience in this area? You got me. At least Sarah Palin could see Russia.

Bashing? Puh-leeeze! Let me guess, what we've heard for the past four years - and continue to hear from President Obama - about the Bush Administration is "legitimate criticism" and "patriotic dissent", but whenever Cheney, Romney, or anyone to the rght of Barney Frank raises concerns about present policy (or execution thereof) it's "BASHING"! Way to "report" there, deputy!

Mitt-witt, you have absolutely no credibility. Please go back to private industry. By the way, if you think the country wants another MBA president right about now you're even more clueless than you appear.

Doesn't matter if your a liberal, conservative, or somwhere in he middle, Mitt Romney has ZERO credibility. From his first Senate run against Kennedy in 1992, to his run for Governor, his term as Governor, and then his run for President, this politician has proven to be the cameleon of all time. Phony is much to mild to do him justice. He is just a laughable character with no ideological compass whatsoever.

Romney had an abismal 44% approval rating when he left office as Gov of Mass; he would not be re-elected if he ran again. Ask the people of MA what they think of him and his non-record here. He likes to take credit whether he deserves it or not, and runs from any issue that he doesn't want to address. I'm not sure who in their right mind would care about what Mitt Romney says about anything. He is a liar, and not worth anyones time to pay attention to. He did fool me when he ran for Governor; but I won't be fooled twice.

"No one in their right mind would listen to Romney"

I can't recall in recent memory such a transparently self-serving politician.

Romney has shown his true colors time and time again; he is utterly untrustworthy, is insincere, and is primarily in politics for the sake of self-glorification and for power.

Dissent was the highest form of patriotism not too long ago.

Hey rpt...
I think Paul may be right after all!! The true meaning of a story is not always in the headlines.... BUSH-BASHING OVER AFRICA POLICY is a letter to the editor. The writer of the letter is complaining that the Globe printed a story that was bashing President Bush.

It is funny that Mitt Romney would comment on President Obama "bad mouthing" the US on his initial tours in Europe. Our former governor made it a regular practice to bad mouth the State of Massachusetts when he was running for president. This is just another example of a classic Mitt Romney Flip Flop!!

Go Mitt! It is about time someone got the kutspah to stand up and speak up against Obama and his "so sorry tour". It is a disgrace-and embarrassing. The VERY problem I had with Obama was his lack of foreign political experience. Every time he steps off of American ground it reminds me why I had that problem.
Too bad here in the Northeast there are too many pinko liberals that can't see the forest through the trees.

Yea, after 8 years of Republican lying about national security, weakening and exhausing our military, and giving the U S a worldwide blackeye, we should listen to the Mittster with no secret or special national security or forein policy insight. The only thing Mitt and his tiny irrevelant party of no and foolish angry old white guys have any credibility about, is comic relief.

Mitt--haven't you figured out that the US cannot do it all alone? Take North Korea, for example. If the Chinese aren't on board, nothing gets done. Even Dick Cheney couldn't take out North Korean nukes. Our security is enhanced by havng more friends in the world. And, by not taking actions like the camp in Gitmo that provide a rallying cry for jihadists and anti-American nations worldwide.

Obama is depriving the America-haters of an easy target. It doesn't mean there won't be action. Just ask the Somali pirates.

I feel sorry for Obama being used by his own Party and his own Administration and I mean really put him infront of the firing squad of the public outrage over bailouts and taking over private industries amount to millions of jobs lost within the last three months. The President doesn't notice the avalanche is above him because he is skiing underneath on the flat surface.Public opinion can make a 180 degree turn away from a popular leader especially when it comes to more taxes, expensive president, higher unemployment and cost of living going up.

Romney is a blowhard who spends more money weekly dying his hair than the average working class family spends on their grocery bill. This guy is the most vain jerk. He is not a man of conviction like his father, but an morally bankrupt opportunist and a draft dodger to boot. His biggest conviction is that he has none.

I simply do not understand why he does not make his permanent residence in Utah and just run for governor. The national electorate sees through his charades.

I would like to see a GOP debate with Mitt, Cheney. Limbaugh and Hannity, to see which one can take the most extreme position.

I kind of like the trap that Republicans have backed themselves into. If you are extreme enough to win the nomination, you will be too extreme to win the general election.

Bush was far from presidential; towards the rest of the world, he was arrogant and condescending, and he demonstrated an obstinately totalitarian attitude. He was also a maundering clown.

Insinuating Bush was presidential is a joke.

Flip-flop, flip, flop, flip-flop. Is that the sound of my watch? Nope, it's Mitt changing positions, at about the same frequency.

You want a conservative? Vote Ron Paul. Don't vote for old flip-flop Romney. That guys as slippery as synthetic oil and not nearly as useful.

Yawn,
He's just trying to fire up the GOP, since they don't have an identity, a platform, a leader or a clue for that matter.

I'm all for other opinions, I'll listen to them and I'll think for myself.

It's funny how as soon as a Democrat does something different, the "Right" immediately whines and says how American has become weak...hmm, seems like torture is "weak" to me.

Oh geez. Here we go again with the condescending (without having anything to be condescending about) flip-flopping Romney flailing away at President Obama like a sick, old housecat trying to beat up a lion. Note to Mitt: You will never be president. Just accept it. Your flip-flopping record and pathetic debating skills will see to that. The republicans have decided to simply scrabble away tooth and nail at anything Obama does, thinking they'll get some traction eventually. As an independent, Obama supporter, I couldn't be more gleeful that sorry fools like Romney, Cheney, the hillbillies Graham and McConnell, and the freakish Bobby Jindal are the best the poor repubs can do. Keep it up guys! We welcome it!

To Andy Gump (or frump, whatever): Romney balanced the budget four years in a row without raising taxes, became the first governor in the nation to get all his citizens health insurance, cleaned up Beacon Hill by forcing out Billy Bulger from UMass and Matt Amorello from the Turnpike, got rid of the patronage haven known as the MDC, reformed state government from top to bottom, vetoed an in-state tuition bill for illegal aliens, started a scholarship program for students who were top scorers on the MCAS, fought to expand charter schools, took over the city of Springfield and rescued it from bankruptcy, created thousands of new jobs, cut taxes 19 times, and that's just to name a few things Romney did.

And Kathy, without a doubt he did all that with one thing in mind...preening himself for national office...NOT the welfare of the people of Massachusetts.

Romney proved his lack of loyalty, respect, and commitment to the people of the Commonwealth when he repeatedly trashed them when campaigning in other states.

He's a contemptible opportunist.
