Does letter back Pelosi on CIA criticism?

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor July 9, 2009 11:39 AM

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sought today to avoid diving back into the controversy over what she knew about harsh interrogations of terrorist detainees and when she knew it, despited being armed with more ammunition on her side.

In May, she acknowledged for the first time that she knew by early 2003 that the Central Intelligence Agency had subjected terror detainees to waterboarding, but saw little recourse to challenge the practice except by achieving Democratic control of Congress and the White House.

In defending herself, she also accused CIA officials of misleading Congress about the extent of the use of waterboarding, which she, President Obama, and others say is torture and have harshly criticized. CIA Director Leon Panetta, a former congressional colleague, denied the accusation, and some Republicans called for Pelosi to resign as speaker.

But in a letter disclosed Wednesday, seven Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee asserted that Panetta told Congress last month that senior CIA officials have concealed significant actions and misled lawmakers repeatedly since 2001.

Pelosi told reporters today that Panetta has not told her that, and said she only knew of the letter from media reports.

Asked if the letter ends the debate over the "propriety" of her accusations about the CIA, she replied, "I didn't know there was any question about propriety. I'm very proud of my work in human rights over the years. And people know where I am on the issues on which we've agreed."

It's not clear what Panetta privately told the committee on June 24, but committee Chairman Silvestre Reyes, a Texas Democrat, said the CIA clearly lied in one case.

The CIA did not directly comment on what Panetta told the panel, instead issuing its stock response. "It is not the policy or practice of the CIA to mislead Congress. This agency and this director believe it is vital to keep the Congress fully and currently informed. Director Panetta's actions back that up," spokesman George Little told reporters.

Republicans say the letter is part of a campaign to protect Pelosi.

The top Republican on the committee, Pete Hoekstra of Michigan, called the letter "one of the most bizarre episodes in politics that I've seen in my time here in Washington." "It looks like they're working on the political equation," Hoekstra said on CBS' "The Early Show." "They're not trying to foster a bipartisan consensus on national security."

The back-and-forth comes as the House debates a bill that would let more lawmakers attending top-secret intelligence briefings -- legislation that President Obama vows to veto.

The Democrats lost control of the CIA after 9/11. Before 9/11, the Democrats had basically owned the CIA and are reason for its failure to prevent 9/11. This is the ongoing attempt by the Democrats and the left to regain control of the CIA and make it the impotent bureaucracy it was before 9/11.

It is pure politics. Stupid! And this is not suprising at all. CIA has learned the lessons that those who were briefed leaked. And thus to protect the country, they need to be careful and be conservative. The congress, instead, is a bunch of liars. This letter does little but trying to protect Pelosi and to continue to shift blame. The Democrates are spending time on this nonscence while people go hungry.
We should talk about how CIA behaved while Clinton was president. Did they lie while the terroist were already attacking US interest worldwide? Did they lie to protect Clinton? Did they lie about the seriousness of the terroist?

Why would the Republicans take such accusations seriously when investigation of the same can only make them look bad? Their man was in charge at the time, so it goes without saying that they're going to fight any hint of scandal or wrongdoing. Politics as usual. The 'bi-partisian' hand-wringing is just that, nothing more. They aren't interested in the truth or bi-partisianship, only in keeping themselves and their party from further embarrassment. I might add it's not just a Republican thing - both sides seek to spin the facts to fit the views of their party and themselves. The truth comes in a distant third, if it's considered at all.

Republicans don't CARE if the CIA has been lying to Congress; they haven't since 2000. As long as it increases the chances they'll return to dominance / remain in dominance, they'll put up with nearly anything. Republicans == "The end justifies the means" these days, and that's a sad thing to say... but unfortunately true.

Let's see, Democratic political operative cum CIA director Panetta is alleged to have said that the CIA lied to members of Congress by Democratic members of Congress in a letter. This is at least double hearsay. Nancy Pelosi is a demented old lady who shouldn't be in the building - never mind the room - when any affairs of state are discussed.

It's too bad we have a communist president now. On the bright side at least he has come around to the Bush-Cheney view on the need to detain terrorists. His campaign rhetoric had me worried; lucky for us he is a liar.

Everybody lies. Politicians talk about others to hide from themselves. Both parties are liars. We need to Vote all congressmen out in 2010, both parties, to scare the hell out of them. Then do the same in 2012, fresh start. If that doesn't work we start on the Senate in 2014.

Once again my party(Republicans) demonstrate why I didn't vote for them and won't be voting for them again any time soon.
It's party first and the nation be damned with those clowns. As long as they keep this up, they can count real conservatives like myself NOT voting for them anymore. They always want to argue and call names, but at the end of day republicans, you don't listen to people like me, then get used to being out of power cuz the last two elections showed you can't win without people like me.

The late entrance of this letter is very suspect. Pelosi has accused the CIA of lying to Congress and this is all they have to support that allegation. Looks mighty weak, doesn't it?

The fact that she is still the speaker is a disgrace. Attacking the CIA who defends us daily. Saying that they lack integrity when she clearly has none is a shame. The fact democrats will do anything to discredit those who protect and serve is also an utter disgrace. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Aaron, how dare you call them the "Republican Torture Party". You clearly only get information from sources you thoroughly enjoy and know little about national security and what it takes to defend this nation.

The CIA accused of lying. OMG.. People.....thats what they do. That's what we pay them to do for us. I for one don't want a U.S. secret service organization that tells the truth, especially to spinless legislators. What's the point in having an "open to the public" secret service. Next thing you know Pelosi is going to ask teh CIA "where are all our nuclear weapons located". And if they say they don't, then they are lying ---next step letter campaingn to discredit the secret service. I for one think we should have removed the terroists fingers one by one until they talked.... but noooooo, America is above that.

On the other hand (and I speak as a Democrat), it isn't inconceivable that the Democratic members on the Intelligence committee are motivated in this by partisan politics. What Panetta told the committee may not be any more revealing than what's already been revealed. Why don't they all just clearly identify what it was?

Amanda - the reason republicans aren't asking questions about whether the CIA lied is because they already know all about it. They're just trying to insulate themselves from criticism for the torture policy they were a part of, by trying to tar their opponents with their own crime.

Jason - the reason democrats aren't taking this seriously is because they already know all about it - see above. Frankly, only those who want to be fooled by it, are.

What makes you think they AREN'T taking this seriously and have found evidence that it's Nancy Pelosi that's lying?

It's very telling that intelligence committee members are coming down on the side of the CIA.

Also note, it's Nancy Pelosi who's story has changed. Remember when she said they didn't tell her a THING about waterboarding, then it was "well, they mentioned it, but they implied it wasn't being used", then it was "I knew, but only recently", and on and on.

"In May, she acknowledged for the first time that she knew by early 2003 that the Central Intelligence Agency had subjected terror detainees to waterboarding, but saw little recourse to challenge the practice except by achieving Democratic control of Congress and the White House."

So once Pelosi and the Democrats gained control of the Congress, was torture stopped?
And now with the additional control of the White House, has torture been stopped?

Fancy Nancy the barking seal went into hibernation shortly after she accused the CIA. But hey, Cheney did it too when the occasion was right. It's called dodge and cover. If there's one thing all politicians know, it's that the world keeps turning and when you make dumb statements, it's best to let "new" news cover you. They all know Americans have the attention span of gnats and a quiet period gives the MSM / political machine time to spin up a frothy position.

Why don't they go back further and see if they lied before 2001. You don't think they ever lied and were always good boys when the Dems were in charge?

Of course then everyone would have to change their tune because it would mean more than the "big bad republicans" are involved because Dems would never do anything illegal or bad.

Panetta is a shill. Towing the party line.

Remember...All politicians aren't truthful some of the time. They just weave a web of half truths. The media can only report so much and biasness can effect how the information is broadcasted to the general population. People who want to try the CIA at the Hague or wherever should put facts before emmotions. If you don't like the CIA and/or their tactics that is your right to believe. However, what would the united States do without an intelligence community in a global world?

Wait a minute, lets make one thing clear. Pelosi lied over and over and over again to the media and the American public about what she knew and the fact she was ever briefed about the techniques. It wasn't until proof was released showing that she was informed, that she finally admitted it. Then the story immediately was spun as an attack on the CIA.

I am not denying that heads should role if the CIA lied --at the CIA and from the Bush Administration. But where is the justice here that Pelosi is not being called out for her blatant misrepresentations? Janet,

Actually, I believe that the Geneva Convention established rules of war between countries. It doesn't have anything to do with rogue groups who do not wear identifying uniforms such as Al Queda. Therefore, the rules do not apply to them since they don't follow them.

Al Queda has been torturing people since long before the war started. So it is incorrect to believe that this suddenly started because of us.

Are you kidding? You don't need to hook a mans testicles up to a car battery to get the info you need, that makes you a terrorist as well. The problem is that we have very uncreative and unintelligent people working at the CIA. When you torture someone they will say most anything you want to hear in order to stop the pain, even if that information is incorrect (inquisition etc.). Do not think for a second that torture is the only or correct way. We are paying taxes that are being used for private interests (bush, cheney, banks and oil cartels) (war in Iraq, does anyone really know why we are there?). I must agree with Chazz. I'm a Nam vet and the Geneva Convention only applies to uniformed armies, signers of the Geneva Accords. Al Queda and other terrorists couldn't care less about the Geneva Convention and I say we should treat them the same way. We must fight the war we have, not the one we wished we had. This is not WW2 and these are not Nazi Germany or Imperial Japan, these are terrorists who send naive children to blow up Mosques, innocent civilians and whoever happens to be around when the bomb goes off. They don't deserve the protection of a benefit that they scorn. I say do whatever you need to do to get the information you need. Remember, we're not the ones beheading

Torture vs. Polite Conversation. 'Enhance Interogation Techniques' is the grey area. A rather large grey area that allows for many interpetations.
Truth vs. Lie. Using manipulative language to advance a political postion is the grey area. A rather large grey area that allow for many interpetations.
Very few people really care about the truth as long as their political position is being advanced. People who truly seek the truth will very seldom see truth coming from a politician.

Unfortunately we have members of Congress who can't or won't keep their mouths shut so I don't blame the Bush administration for keeping a few covert operations secret from congressional members who would have spilled the beans to our enemies.

Its tough to fight a war when people who you are suppose to entrust with vital security related information are so opposed the war that they would willingly help our enemies if they thought doing so would help their own political careers.

That has onthing to do with Polosi who we now know knew about the waterboarding and just plain lied to the public when she told us she didn't. Too many of her piers were in the same meetings and they heard what was said, so at best she didn't pay attention, and at worst, is just a bold face liar.

A free democracy is impossible if leaders can make unchallenged accusations and "report" on "facts" that are not substantiated. We as citizens who elect these people simply MUST know that out leaders (past, present and future) are being factual with us and not manipulating the population.

The convenience of a letter suddenly appearing which vindicates Pelosi is astounding.
----------
Robert -- the letter didn't "suddenly appear." It was written in lieu of briefings that happened post facto to Pelosi's press conference 2 months ago. Why don't we do what normal, rational humans do -- wait for all the facts to surface, then decide? Seems to me there's much more to this. When all is said and done, someone needs to resign, or even be tried. But I don't think we know who that should be yet...

Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Libertarians, Socialists, Liberals or Conservatives, it doesn't matter who's in office....It's all politics at our expense.

Display your moral outrage at the allegations and YELL IN CAPS all you want. Hold your vigils, light your candles and march in your demonstrations. Sooner (than later), this like many important things will be dimmed by the death of another entertainer, the price of oil or the pretty little girl of a hot-looking mom gone missing. We have become so engrossed in the sparkly lights of the media, that we can't maintain our attention span for more than five minutes.

The CIA might have lied to Congress?

Our CIA -- a completely incompetent agency that uses torture, rendition and secret prisons -- yet can't find Bin Laden.....

Sigh.

It makes you wonder who's running the asylum???

I would laugh if it wasn't so pathetic and dangerous....

OK: Members of Congress have come forward saying that Panetta confided that there were lies told, yet the right wingers are still blaming Pelosi for this nonsense. Then, are wondering why anyone cares anyway: so what if there is torture? That's what they were sent to do. Proves to me that conservatives really don't believe in the Constitution.

It is amazing how ridiculous this issue has become. Why are we wasting our time discussing politicians, both Dems & Repubs, who's only concern is to CYA, its time to rid our nation of the flies and magots that are feeding off of the dying carcuss's of the American people, lets stop talking and do something "REAL" about these idiots called politicains and vote them out of office and clean out the garbage can called Washington DC, I don't know about all you but I am tired of being represented by individuals who put party politics above the people. This Government is too big, too incompetent, and too socialistic to be called democracy anymore. Rise up like the patriots of the revolution who stood up against the tyranny of the British government who did not care about the people on "main street" (colonists) they did something about it - they changed the way they were being governed most people today are cowards and not hungry enough yet to do anything but talk and write stupid emails. WAKE UP AMERICAN"S the British are coming -ooops! THEY ARE ALREADY HERE IN WASHINGTON - and they are called SENATORS & CONGRESSMEN & WOMEN. WHO care that the CIA LIED anyway! its their job and at least they are doing the job they were asked to do unlike the politicians.

Oh Please! Give me a break. This is a coverup attempt by the dumbocratic party because the repugnant-cans are rightfully pissed at her attempt to cover her butt. Can you sheeple PLEASE get it through your head that blind allegiance to one party over another is nothing more than a distraction?? Would you grow up and realize that NEITHER party particularly gives a crap about you, the regular citizen?

Politics is a career now. Any career has a "survivial" mentality. Unfortunately, in politics, that means say one thing and do another. We're all a part of this national scheme. Please wake up!

Who else was in that briefing room? Was Pelosi the only person in a committee meeting with the CIA? Anyone know this and care to post the others with political affiliation? I don't think she should step down, I think she should be held to task by her accusors out in the open and take whatever licks are due . Oh, wait, would it then have to come in the open out who else was briefed and who ordered the CIA to do whatever the CIA did?

Let's see:

"Stupid is as Stupid does"

American voters vote for 2 GOP loser idiots not once, but 2 times in a row. Stupid is!

Neither Gore nor Kerry contest both corrupted and rigged elections of 2000 & 2004. Stupid is!

Voters never contest either corrupted and fixed election of 2000 & 2004. Stupid is!

bush & cheney are the 2 most illiterate GOPS ever to step into the White House in over 200 years. Stupid is!

Those same 2 illiterate GOP loser idiots start an unsanctioned and quagmired war in Iraq that not only has left our country totally near bankrupt, but the rest of the world as well as a result. Stupid does!

The DEMS never push to IMPEACH bush/cheney for out and out corruption, misuse of taxpayer's money, and for misleading the American people (otherwise known as dumbass voters) into a ridiculous blood war for oil that has caused 4322 dead US troops to date. Stupid does!

DEM Congress led by Nancy Peloser just let bush/cheney march to their own drum with no plan at all as how to get US troops out of Iraq or Afghanistan in one piece. Stupid does!

DEMS let bush/cheney totally bankrupt this country with NO checks & balances under a blind and out of control SEC to the tune of BILLIONS of dollars defrauded. Stupid does!

GOPS under bush/cheney did absolutely nothing constructive in 8 years time except to start unsanctioned wars they can't finish, they collapsed the real estate market totally, they bankrupted tons of American investors, they left behind an out of control Halliburton WAR spending spree that topped a Trillion dollar plus debt to the taxpayers as well as to the new Obama Administration, they had more homosexual closet cases disgrace their own supposed "conservative" party making them the laughing stock they really are, and they only managed to make more countries hate us worst then ever before due to bush's total illiterate lack of foreign diplomacy. Stupid does!

Fast forward:

Present day USA Congress is still arguing over the same piece of CIA doggie crap it was 8 years ago with no plan in sight as how to resolve anything. Stupid is as Stupid does!

Go figure!

OK. So Panetta (apparently) in 2009 says the CIA failed to properly inform Congress of its actions sometime in the period 2001-2009. If that's what he did it would seem that the 6 Democratic members of Congress were entirely correct to call on Panetta to revise his statement - he gave them the information needed for them to formulate and issue that request. It's pertinent, it's fair.

That he did so in 2009 does not disprove allegations that the CIA (lied, failed to properly inform) prior to 2009.

Whether the 6 Democrats invited their Republican counterparts to sign the letter isn't revealed. That's where the news lies [with regard to the Democrats playing "political football." If they did invite and the Republicans refused then the R's are the ones acting politically (with regard to the letter. If the 6 did it strictly as Democrats then the charge is close enough to valid to suit me.)]

The definition of lie is different between the liberals and the conservatives. The liberals do not consider this a lie while the conservatives do: "I do not have improper relation with that woman."

Too bad, CIA is caught in between, and that is not good for our country. It is historic that the third ranking public official publicly accusing CIA of lying. How can CIA do its job when its credential is trashed in such a spectacular manner? Are we loosing our mind?

It's what we don't know that's scary. If we know this much, you can expect there is more there. Dick Cheney's not talking more than he has in his 8 years as VP for nothing (besides his book). He was quiet all those years for a reason. We can only imagine what is really underneath the truth!

Subject: Obama's Citizenship- the story grows

AP- WASHINGTON D.C. - In a move certain to fuel the debate over Obama's qualifications for the presidency, the group Americans for Freedom of Information has Released copies of President Obama's college transcripts from Occidental College .Released today, the transcript indicates that Obama, under the name Barry Soetoro, received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia as an undergraduate at the school.. The transcript was released by Occidental College in compliance with a court order in a suit brought by the group in the Superior Court of California. The transcript shows that Obama (Soetoro) applied for financial a id and was awarded a fellowship for foreign students from the Fulbright Foundation Scholarship program. To qualify, for the scholarship, a student must claim foreign citizenship. This document would seem to provide20the smoking gun that many of Obama's detractors have been seeking.

Along with the evidence that he was first born in Kenya and there is no record of him ever applying for US citizenship, this is looking pretty grim. The news has created a
firestorm at the White House as the release casts increasing doubt about Obama's legitimacy and qualification to serve as president. When reached for comment in London , where he has been in meetings with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Obama smiled but refused comment on the issue.

Britain 's Daily Mail has also carried the story in a front-page article titled, Obama Eligibility Questioned leading some to speculate that the story may overshadow economic issues on Obama's first official visit to the U.K.

In a related matter, under growing pressure from several groups, justice Antonin Scalia announced that the Supreme Court agreed on Tuesday to hear arguments concerning Obama's legal eligibility to serve as President in a case brought by Leo Donofrio of New Jersey .. This lawsuit claims Obama's dual citizenship disqualified him from serving as president. Donofrio's case is just one of 18 suits brought by citizens demanding proof of Obama's citizenship or qualification to serve as president.

Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation has released the results of their investigation of Obama's campaign spending. This study estimates that Obama has spent upwards of $950,000 in campaign funds in the past year with eleven law firms in 12 states for legal resources to block disclosure of any of his personal records. Mr. Kreep indicated that the investigation20is still ongoing but that the final report will be provided to the U.S. Attorney General, Eric Holder. Mr. Holder has refused to comment on the matter.

LET OTHER FOLKS KNOW ABOUT THIS NEWS SINCE THE MEDIA WILL NEVER REPORT IT!

CIA Lie? C'mon.
They can't lie, they just provide information and do as directed. Information sifted by administration, as in "WMD", Links to terrorism, ties to Bin Lade etc. The only lies were that there wasn't any contradictory information available. CIA has no power, we are left to blame the real liers: Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the other people who benefit from oil prices that went from $20 to $150/Brl.
Lets waterboard the real liers until they speak the truth. Cowards like the current GOP will never get it.

There's a way to reconcile all of this controversy over who knew what and when. If there is probable cause, then INDICTMENTS work very effectively in allowing people to present information to a tribunal that functions for the virtual purpose of providing justice to those people victimized by crime. Where is the Attorney General when there exists probable cause that Federal Officials have committed crimes? For some reason, they never seem to be interested in following up on these matters. Yet, the citizenry is supposed to be impressed by pr releases such as Operation Falcon or some other propaganda. You know what would impress me as a citizen; when an Attorney General actually sought an indictment for War Crimes.

The attempts of the wingnuts to villify Pelosi despite the complete vindication of her statements on the CIA's lack of truthfullness illustrates how wicked and vile they really are. She said they lied to her and Congress. Panetta's statements back it up. The law states that the CIA is to keep Congress informed and they kept this program secret for 8 years? C'mon now. You repukes are a joke. You talk of "security" and "defending America" when you would mortgage our stated values in order to continue the pall of fear that's loomed over our coutry for the better part of the decade. That fear is how the right was able to operate with little to no accountability and you would try to keep us in fog so that you could continue with your shadow government. Cheney should be jailed and the New American Taliban (Republican Party) should disappear into the Pakistani wilderness with the rest of their America hating bretheren (was that strong enough?).
